Matt Jones Overlooked AGAIN!

The GREAT Matt Jones was bypassed by another team!  Tuesday the Tampa Bay Buccaneers held WR tryouts and went with Yamon FigursAre you kidding me?!?  Yamon "FREAKING" Figurs!!!  Don't they realize that Jones is tall and fast really tall and really fast.  His gigantic height alone will cause match-up problems.  And his blazing incendiary like speed will allow him to be utilized in so many creative ways.  That Buccaneer franchise is in disarray.  Also passed over was David Tyree, Chris Davis, and Jordan Kent

Could someone please explain to me why a guy with 3 career catches (Figurs) can beat out a talented and tall Matt Jones?  I guess the best thing that comes out of this is he's still available for the Bears.  Come on JA, make it happen!

LOL

To Figurs’ credit, I do believe he is the fastest player in the league.

And Tyree ended up signing with the Ravens.

I'm sorry, but my sentence was very clear

and to the point.

Matt Jones is not good at the game of football. If he was, he would have a contract with a professional team. But since he isn’t, even the Tampa Bay Bucco’s won’t sign him.

I don't have the animosity towards Jones that some of you seem to

but I have to admit, if the Bucs pass on you, that’s not a good thing. Well, it’s good in that you don’t have to actually play for them, but it still looks bad.

Then if the Bucs jumped off a cliff...

so should we. What is with the infatuation of doing and trusting what other teams do. NEWSFLASH: Other teams are exactly that, OTHER teams. They aren’t on our side. We have our own talent scouts and management. We should make our own decisions and not base it on what other teams think.

by brands735 on Oct 16, 2009 8:04 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm not saying we should

However since we haven’t appeared to give him so much as a sniff, I’m thinking our own scouts and management probably have made their own decision.

How does one suck

when they have 65 catches in 10 games started and 12 played overall last season on a very bad team? Seems to me you have a case of the hypocritical bug. Green Jesus is a false prophet.

by propheteer on Oct 16, 2009 1:36 PM CDT up reply actions

He sucks because:
A) People have never seen him play
B) The Bucs didn’t give him a contract
C) He used drugs…

Haha it is a lost cause, too many people think they are scouts without even scouting the guy. I think he has the skill set to still contribute, granted I doubt anyone on this board has seen him play since his supsension. It is just a lost cause trying to justify anyone that is currently “unemployed”.

by brands735 on Oct 16, 2009 2:27 PM CDT up reply actions

scouts...

32 NFL teams and 4 USFL teams and their entire scouting staffs disagree with you on Jones… he may play this year, but so far no one wants him… those are the facts

by Lester A. Wiltfong Jr. on Oct 16, 2009 4:57 PM CDT up reply actions

He worked out for all 32 teams? Didn’t know that

by brands735 on Oct 16, 2009 6:40 PM CDT up reply actions

no other team has signed him

therefor every other scout has recommended to their GM that they DO NOT pursue that guy

by Lester A. Wiltfong Jr. on Oct 16, 2009 10:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Since he isn’t a rookie, he doesn’t work out at a combine or anything. It could be possible that other teams went to his workouts with TEN and TB, but other than that, I don’t think too many scouts physically saw him workout for the 2009 season. I don’t care, like I said, I don’t want us to sign Matt Jones right now, I like the guy, but I personally want Earl Bennett to shine. I just disagree with a lot of the smack people talk about him and the unjustified reasons of why we shouldn’t sign him.

lol

It’s a silly discussion… we all just have to agree to disagree (im on the Jones doesnt suck side)

Very silly indeed

With Edwards the talent is definitely there, I just wonder about his commitment. I’m not sure about what’s deterring teams from signing Jones, cause he got in trouble for having a beer with buddies on the golf course. Not exactly a horrible offense.

by propheteer on Oct 16, 2009 4:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I was thinking

Maybe Jones and his agent haven’t been realistic, when it comes to the negotiations. I’m confident that no team is offering more than the veteran minimum and with Jones’ draft status, I could see where they (Jones & agent) feel he’s worth more…

I’ve read some things that suggested contract negotiations is the reason Derrick Brooks hasn’t signed with anyone… If a guy at Brooks’ age doesn’t want to settle for the vet minimum, it’s certainly possible Jones (whom is considerably younger than Brooks) wouldn’t either.

I doubt we’ve seen Matt Jones take his last snap in the NFL, IMHO.

he is a bum

he was terrible at arkansas and i hated him. he never really preformed at his 21st overall selection. he like many other players are busts. yeah so what he had a few good games and was finally on track for his career to take off but he was on drugs-probalby more than we know of. he doesnt deserve a second (actually third) chance. third because he relapsed in drug court by violating the rules of drug court by drinking while golfing of which are clearly stated upon being admitted into the program. ( i am an avid watcher when i am in town)

Relapsed?

He broke the rules, deserved punishment, but I hardly call drinking a few beers on a golf course with friends relapse. He didn’t go back to the white stuff.

by brands735 on Oct 14, 2009 7:23 PM CDT up reply actions

He should have never been drafted 21st.

That was a horrible reach on the part of Jacksonville. He was considered a mid-round project guy until the media got ahold of his combine footage/numbers. That’s when he got boosted past where the scouts had him pegged. Just because he doesn’t perform as well as a first-rounder is expected to perform doesn’t mean he can’t be a valuable player.

Right now I would pass too

I was very much in favor of bringing Jones in the pre-season, but now that our WR’s have shown they are NFL caliber talent, I wouldn’t try to bring in an outside talent especially one that is as close to a talent we have(ie Greg Olsen). Also we have seen that DA is a big target that can get downfield, so we can activate him if and when needed.

Really?

So why has he not signed with anybody GeauxBears? It is week 6 and he’s still unemployeed. Perhaps because he was on probation for Cocaine and was violated for being intoxicated while on probation are part of the reasons why. I could be wrong though. I can only strive to be at the same intelligence level as the rest of you.

by Gesiakob on Oct 14, 2009 11:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Here Is Some Even Deeper Understanding.

The Bears cut Cedric Benson for alcohol related charges. The charges against Benson were eventually dropped. It seems the Bears did not care to wait around for the results. So If I understand this latest stroke of brilliance, we have this suggested. Take a free Agent Wide Receiver that was actually CONVICTED of possession of Cocaine, violated his probation for using alcohol and sign him to the Bears. That really seems to me to go against the grain of what Bears managment wants to see in members of their football team. Please excuse my indulgence as I’m not as smart as the rest of you brilliant football minds.

You are correct. We cut Tank Johnson loose for gun possession too. But we still had Lance Louis on our roster after his assault charges surfaced. I think Afalava has some trouble in his past too but I cannot think of what.

No one wants Jones

Because he is still facing a suspension. So a team would have to sign him and subsequently have him sit for 4 games. Most teams looking for a WR now want a guy who can play now. Although 4 games would allow him to pick up the play book more.

To be fair,

Matt Jones is a good 3 inches taller, and though DA isn’t slow, he’s not on par with Jones in the speed and acceleration department.

Of course DA doesn’t have a prison record, history of drug and alcohol abuse, and is not facing suspension… so that might balance the scales out a bit when looking at the big picture.

by DDigital on Oct 14, 2009 7:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Jones may go down as one of the biggest waste of talents in recent memory

He’s got the tools and the ability, but he’s another guy who’s too unpredictable off of the field. Teams are afraid to take on guys like Jones, especially after the Dante Stallworth incident.

for a 5th or 6th round pick…with any other team i would jump on it but thas where The Bears make a killing in the draft…id give a 7th for him

by EmmCeee on Oct 14, 2009 2:08 PM CDT reply actions

I would do it for a 5th or 6th. Unlike some other free agents, Owens would be a 1 shot deal. If we can get the Bills to take the majority of his salary it wouldn’t be bad. Him and Cutler have similar attitudes so I think they would understand each other.

i dont know about

Great Matt Jones lol but put him in the red zone with Olsen and Kellen Davis and you have a HUGE matchup problem 6’5 6’6 and 6’7 that alone would make me sign him
