i like the trade a lot

2nd round pick is a little much … but if Rod can work his magic on Adams, then it should be a fairly good trade

COOL BEANS!

i agree second is WAYYYY too much

he adds alot of depth though i think this moves means o gun will walk at the end of the year

Talent wise

The Bears probably asked this question: Would they be able to get more at the end/latter third of the 2nd round? Most likely not. Good trade cause he helps them immediately, whereas a draft pick next year does not. Look no further than the SB champion Giants from a couple years ago on what an influx of speed rushers can do for your defense. Everyone wants an improved secondary by bringing in better players, but this is the best way to help their performance.

I like this, assuming Rod can get in his head.

Monte Kiffin was absolutely giddy over getting to draft him. The problems with him so far have supposedly been effort related as well as a new system this year. He’s back in a Tampa 2 that he’s familiar with, so hopefully Marinelli will be able to get through to him.

I like the move, I think....

I think that Adams could be an absolute beast in the right situation. The fact that we have Marinelli may just make this the right situation. I am not sure where he fits in at this juncture in the season, but I guess we will find out soon enough.

What has happened to our Jerry Angelo. This new Angelo is trading draft picks like the one we are used to never would. I like the willingness to make something happen though.

i love this place. Jerry Angelo must be the dumbest person in the world.

look, i think gms make bad moves all the time, but there is no question that JA, Lovie and Rod wanted this for a reason. this isn’t some bad draft pick.

dude

Jerry Rice is not walking through that door, dude. Michael Irvin is not walking through that door, and Chris Carter is not walking through that door. And if you expect them to walk through that door, they’re going to be gray and old. What we are is young, exciting, hard-working, and we’re going to improve. People don’t realize that, and as soon as they realize those three guys are not coming through that door, the better this blog will be for all of us because there are young guys in that room playing their asses off.

i will concede

that a 2nd rounder for Edwards… would have been worth it. But i think the Gaines move should work out well.
Less money for the bears, for a younger “1st round talent”
and he’s the typical player lovie goes for, in the cover-2 scheme

Exactly

They (temp and dakoose) act as if it’s still the offseason and Knox, Hester, and Bennett haven’t made any plays. I’d much rather have Adams for one pick rather than Edwards for two picks and two players. Everyone has already said this team will only go as far as the defense takes them. Having another young, atheltic, fast DE just entering his prime is optimal. It’s not like this guy has been a slouch by any means. 13.5 sacks, 2 Ints, 2 ff, and 10 passes defended.

Thats unexpected .............

But if you notice Ogunleye Anderson and Idonije all are FAs at the end of the year and Ogunleye will likely get a big contract if he stays course with his sack totals thus far. This is obviously an investment for next season, plus say Anderson and Adawale both left after this year we would have likely drafted a DE anyway, might as well have the proven commodity.

Look at it this way, Carolina gave up a FIRST round pick for Everette Brown a SECOND round pick, we just gave up a second round pick for a first round pick. Its really not that bad of a move, just out of nowhere.

Very interesting

I just read this and decided I would come here to see what you guys are saying about it. Don’t you guys already have Brown, Ogunleye, and Anderson who are all more then capable pass rushers? What do you think this means for all their playing time? Will either Brown or Ogunleye (who I believe are the two starters?) be benched in favor of Adams?

is us gutting our draft for 2 straight years and does this mean the staff isn’t confident in gilbert or melton developing?

plus, how many years does adams have left on his rookie contract? it’s probably a little pricey too, considering he was the no. 4 overall pick. would like to see the contract numbers and how many years he has left.

its a steal - IF this kid isn't a bust

don’t know much about him, other than he was highly touted coming out of college and got picked really high. if he’s a legit starter, than yeah, this is an absolute steal – and i understand he might not actually start here, given wale’s season and brown’s effectiveness against the pass and rush. you give up a 2nd for a starting DE who’s young, but has 2 years experience…no brainer. if he’s not a starter, though, this is a bad deal. anybody know how he’s played with the bucs?

that's what i'm saying

admittedly, stats don’t tell the whole story – and maybe rod and lovie can get the best out of him – but if he’s not starter-level, this is a bad trade. if he is, its a great trade.

by guy incognito on Oct 16, 2009 9:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

heres the thing your right he isnt lighting it on fire....

but he hasnt been awful either.
6 sacks two years in a row is average but i think in the bears d he will excel the line is reminding me a bit of 06 when we had soo much depth on the d line and created havoc we cant jude this trade right away because adams is thrown in right away and doesnt have a chance to get to learn the system. i agree that picks are potential and i mean cmon weve drafted dan bazuin in the first round(never played a snap i beleive) dirty dusty mark bradley so if he works out great i dont like trading draft picks though

It's not exactly gutting your draft... if the trades work out well for you.

Generally, in an entire 7 round draft, you’re lucky if 3 picks make your team. I don’t mind trading picks for good players.

what i like is he doesnt have a burden on him

he no longer has to be the gamechanger he can go out and play relaxed and let it hang and i think he ends the season with 7 sacks in a bears uniform
my mistake earlier i meant to say dan bazuin in the SECOND

by Bear Lovin 21 on Oct 17, 2009 4:13 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Angelo would have traded back anyway, so it wouldn't have been a 2nd round pick

It seems like adding to a strength, but the NFL is won on the lines, and Gaines sures up a questionable future with our defensive line. The Bowe/Braylon may have been a more fantasy friendly additon, but I doubt at the end of the year we will dislike this trade.

Personally I think the corner position is what is truly needed, but I’m not sure how easy they are to acquire. Hopefully Angelo throws all his cards on the table and signs Chris McAlister for CB and Ryan Torain for RB, as I’m not sure if Angelo or Lovie will be around for these draft picks anyway if their gambles don’t work out.

by Casimir Effect on Oct 16, 2009 9:27 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

So I wonder if Adewale is going to be resigned after this move.

I would have much so preferred they pick up a DB, but I’ll take it. I’m sick of people saying we need a WR, I’d rather have three+ quality WRs than one game-changer. Somebody did an article showing the Super Bowl champions from the last 10 years, and very few have had top 10 WRs. Tom Brady won three times on teams whose best receiver was Troy Brown.

It’s not a necessity to have a Terrell Owens or Randy Moss or Andre Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald or Anquan Boldin or Wes Welker or Chad Ochocinco or TJ Whoseyamomma or Braylon Edwards or Dwayne Bowe or Donald Driver or Greg Jennings or Steve Smith. Somebody want to tell me how many Super Bowl rings those guys collectively have? I’ll save you the time and tell you the answer is zero.

I love the move!!

And am utterly amazed that, no matter what Bears’ Management does, someone will invariably bash it as a bad move. A friend of mine (Cowboy fan) told me, this morning, that he heard that the Bears were about to get T.O.. I told him that I’d rather they get a defensive lineman instead. I’m not pretending to be psychic. In fact, to be honest, I was thinking about Dorsey, since I heard he was on the trading block. My reasoning is simple; an improve pass rush improves the LB’s by preventing opposing o-linemen from muddling them up AND the secondary by hurrying the QB into poor decisions. Also, a D-lineman can start almost immediately. Any other position would take alot of time to break into the mix. Lastly, Adams has shown flashes of a high first-round pick, but has lacked consistency. This move and Marinelli’s reputation AND teaching skills will greatly improve Adams’ confidence. Imagine this guy becoming comparable to Jared Allen! Yeah, I know, I know; he ain’t no Jared Allen. But could he be with the proper instruction and mentoring? For a second round pick? I like the move.

Ok I'm not one to do math in public but I'll do it anyway

Say a person graduates high school at 18 they should be 22 when they grad and enter the NFL. They spend 3 years in the league and are 25 which would make them young.

Now lets say an individual graduated high school at the age of 19 spends 4 years in college and 3 years in the league that would make them 26 which would make them old.

EXCELLENT!

Wow… big, big news. A couple days ago, Hub Arkush said during an interview on 670 The Score, that the Bears were indeed making several inquiries on a possible deal. I was tempted to create a news story on it, but Arkush didn’t name any names. He did, however, hint that we were looking for defense.

My only confusion here is this: why couldn’t this deal have happened two weeks ago, heading into the bye week? That would’ve given Gaines more time to get situated.

we would be able to deal Ogunleye for a draft pick by the trade deadline? I he has a real good game against the Falcons someone might bite.

Doesn't maske sense.

1. We want Ogun to contribute to this 2009 team going to the playoffs.
2. If we lose him to free agency, we’ll receive draft pick compensation anyway.

Very true, but not necessarily. Anderson and Idonije are also free agents after this year (though with the possibility of an uncapped year wouldn’t anderson be around 1 more year?) so at least one of them won’t be resigned. If Wale continues to produce at such a higher level than anderson, they may be forced to bring Wale back and let anderson go.

by Gesiakob on Oct 17, 2009 2:25 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No.

They start awarding picks at the end of the 3rd round. So, pick #33 of the 3rd round is the first comp pick. The Bears were awarded 3 picks in last April’s draft for losing Bernard Berrian, Brendon Ayanbadejo and John Gilmore. The top pick was #99 in the 3rd round. That pick became Juaquin Iglesias.

We’re trying to win NOW. And putting pressure on the QB is a key to accomplishing that goal. So, that’s half of why we added another DE. The other half: because we have 3 DEs playing in a contract year.

Seriously, although Cutler and T.O. fist-to-cuffs on the sideline would be entertaining, I think it would (eventually) destroy team chemistry. Our receivers (though young) are improving each week! Great move for the Bears...

While a 2nd round pick is a bit much, this kid has the raw physical talent and the Bears have arguably the best D-line position coach in the NFL. As stated earlier, this allows Izzy to spell Harris more and gives the Bears a much needed 4th full time DE. I still believe finding Harrris’ replacement is the key to the Bears future success on defense, but this move protects against losing Wale to FA money next year.

Kudos to JA for accepting that this team cannot build solely on the draft in its current form. Adams is a bit of a risk, but they now have 3/4 of a season to make that determination. Besides, the 3 areas I believe the Bears need to upgrade talent can still be addressed with the picks they have left:

1. Big, angry 3rd down back-FA, or draft; RBs fill in quickly

2. DB(FS)-There will be a few FAs available and safeties draft low anyway.

3. G-Can be had very late in draft.

There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots.

by LostInSTL on Oct 17, 2009 7:46 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you except, I think this puts Mark Anderson more at risk than Adewale.

If Adewale continues to have a good season and he isn’t totally unreasonable in his contract demands, he’s stated several times his preference is to stay in Chicago. We all know that can completely turn around if someone offers a boatload of cash before the Bears make an offer.

Anderson, on the other hand, still has come nowhere near his rookie season. If that continues throughout this season, I’d rather see the Bears keep Ogunleye around another couple of years and see if Adams can flourish under Marinelli, then launch Anderson.

One thing that does concern me, is one of the scouting reports I read, says one reason he’s been in the doghouse at TB is he can’t learn another move to beat a blocker. Sounds a lot like Anderson’s downside. If we’re just trading one guy who only tries to speed rush for another, then it’s pointless in my opinion.

by BearFan611 on Oct 17, 2009 8:15 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not necessarily

If Anderson plays like he did his rookie year (a big if) he is more valuable than the 32 year old Ogun. Ogun is playing pretty well, but there is no chance Ogun is going to improve, his best days are history. Anderson’s best days might, I repeat might, be in front of him. It’s up to Anderson. As for Gaines, he is very talented, more talented than any DE they have currently, so let’s see if Marinelli can tap into his wealth of talent. If Gaines works out, no need to waste money on a 32 year old on the downhill side of his career LE.

I think we're kind of saying the same thing

This puts the pressure on Anderson to get his act together. I agree the odds of Ogun being back aren’t great, but if his demands aren’t off the charts, I’d rather have him for another year or two than an underachieving Anderson. Especially if this new kid can pick it up and hit his potential (there’s that word again).

by BearFan611 on Oct 17, 2009 12:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

and if worst comes to worst

I’d be okay with a Gaines Adams/Alex Brown DE combo for the next few years…

by Cosmis on Oct 17, 2009 4:12 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

WOW...

we all agree on this. That says a lot for the trade. I do see Adams as a hedge on the downside of having to pick between Izzy, Anderson, and Wale. I agree that Wale may not get better, but he probably has about 2-3 good years left. His contact demands should be reasonable, but you never know. Anderson has the least clout and is probably a cheap re-signing for the Bears or he’s gone. Izzy is too versitile to lose, so I believe Adams (if he works out) can be a long term solution if the Bears lose Wale and Anderson. Again, the main issue on the D-line is the 3-technique. Gilbert has not played much and that worries me. DTs generally are good or bad from the outset. Hopefully Marinelli can get Adams to be that #4 pick he can be. That makes the rest of the D better.

There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots.

I made a somewhat overstated post awhile back about blowing up the defense,

and this is exactly the kind of move I envisioned. Young player, elite talent, and we’re giving him to one of the best d-line coaches around. You’re not going to get an equal talent in the second round…especially if JA’s drafting. :)

Scouting Report I saw at another forum

Strengths:

Gaines Adams is an elite athlete at the defensive end position. He ran the quickest 40 yard dash of any defensive end at the scouting combine and is the most agile of all defensive end prospects. Adams excels as a speed rusher, with a quick first step and a variety of moves at his disposal. Adams has solid technique and uses his athleticism to knock down passes and chase down running backs.

Weaknesses:

Adams needs to add muscle and improve his strength to avoid being targeted in the running game. Strong, athletic tackles will be able to neutralize his speed and use their size to prevent him from disengaging. At times, Adams can get too high which allows even average tackles to get into his body and knock him off balance. Adams is not as consistent as he should be for his level of athleticism, which may be because he sometimes takes plays off as he gets frustrated.

Overall:

Gaines Adams is the best pure pass rushing defensive end in the draft, with the level of quickness and agility the teams have placed a premier on in recent years. Adams is similar to Colts DE Dwight Freeney, though not as quick. Adams will make big plays on occasion, but he may struggle against premier offensive lineman who are able to use superior technique and strength against him,

Some other bits of news/info from the trade

Adams said he expects to travel with the Bears later today for Sunday night’s game at Atlanta, and he could play. Five of his 13½ career sacks have come against the Falcons.

‘’Really, I can’t say right now that a fresh start was what I needed,‘’ Adams said. ’’Really, I am just privileged to be a Bear. It is going to be a new start for me, and I am excited. Hopefully, I go out and play Sunday.’’

Based on the compensation, it’s clear the Bucs weren’t looking to dump Adams as much as Angelo — who loves to say you can never have too many pass rushers — was looking to add a player he coveted. Veteran Adewale Ogunleye is off to the fastest start of his career with 4½ sacks, but he’s 32 and is out of contract after this season. Mark Anderson also is in the final year of his deal. This trade is sure to send a shockwave through the defensive-line room, and could affect whether the Bears open the vault for Ogunleye after the season.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Although the Bears have improved their pass rush under Marinelli and have 14 sacks going into Sunday’s game at Atlanta, this obviously was a move looking toward the future. Adams, 26, was the fourth overall pick in ’07 and has plenty of years left.

Adams’ base salary is $900,000 this season and his contract runs through 2012. His base is $1.08 million in ’10, $1.1 million in ’11, and $1.15 million in ’12.

The knock on Adams, according to folks familiar with the Bucs, is he doesn’t play physical and doesn’t display any counter moves. Tampa Bay head coach Raheem Morris called out Adams for his lack of production early in the season.

Getting Gaines also puts Mark Anderson on notice. He also is in a contract year and has not been as productive as the Bears had hoped following an outstanding training camp. Anderson has just one sack this season. He has yet to duplicate the type of production he had during a 12-sack rookie season in ’06.

Adams has started each of the Bucs’ first five games at right defensive end and has contributed 14 tackles and one sack. He has played in 37 games with 29 starts as a Buccaneer and recorded 124 tackles and 13.5 sacks.

Great deal

Kudos to Angelo. The Bears have not has a guy this talented at DE in years. Unlike any of the current DEs on the team, Gaines has the abilities to be a playmaker at RE. If anyone can tap into Gaines’s considerable abilities it is Marinelli. A gamble to be sure, but a good one.

Weird

Without Marinelli, I believe I would have hated this trade… being as there was no improvement from our young DE’s before he came here… ex: Anderson, Bazuin, Haynes
Coupling that, with the need for improvement and depth at other positions would have been my reasoning.

With Marinelli, I like it! My feeling is Rush Rod gets the most out of his Rush Men. With a ceiling like Adams’, the Bears may be getting a player with “Simeon Rice like” production. I’m kinda pumped!

I would love to see Brown move over to LE and G Adams at RE. Brown is s a natural at the LE/strong side and I hope he gets to be the other bookend from Adams. With a real 3-technique, this D-line could be the best in the last 25 years. It’s hard to beat out Perry, Dent, McMichael, and Hampton; they might be the best front 4 to ever be assembled.

Having two tough ends in a 4-3 will help our D cover that hole at MLB immensely..Roach hasn’t looked good at all when dropping back in pass coverage..he’s meant to be a run stop..i.e. not up the middle.
