Matt Forte is overrated
Garrett Wolfe looked better than him last night. Forte may have good hands and decent running ability, but what the Bears need is someone who won't run scared and will put their head down for those extra yards. I say next week the Bears get Garrett Wolfe involved more. He has looked better than Forte and doesn't have to depend on good blocking to get positive yardage. Maybe i'm just overreacting... tell me what you guys think.

its definitely legitimate
my only concern is where forte runs. watch where he runs on the big gains. same with wolfe. OL plays a big part in how a RB does. Wolfe’s big gains were on the right side. Forte had a few on the right side. He basically got stuffed in the area assigned to Omiyale-Kreutz-Pace, barring a few over there. Omiyale is his problem. I’d be hesitant running on the left side if I wasn’t sure if my OG was gonna block a guy for me or not.
wolfe does a good job finding holes. and he’s definitely shifty, breaking tackles. reminds me of darren sproles. he may have finally found his groove.

I think your overreacting as well.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been upset by Forte’s lack of production as much as anybody else and the Lions game didn’t make me think happy days were ahead. Forte was rated highly prior to the season starting because he was built up to be a top 5 back in FANTASY FOOTBALL. I think thats where your basing the overrated comment off of. He’s only a second year guy and if he had some better production from the O-line I don’t think we would be complaining. Following up with how Forte is overrated by saying that Garrett Wolfe would be a better option is ridiculous. Garrett Wolfe doesn’t depend on good blocking? The guy must PRAY for good blocking or he’s gonna get smashed, he can’t catch out of the backfield as well and he can’t block or pick up blitzes like Forte. Remember when he got hurdled during the Steelers game? Call for Beekman to play over Omiyale instead of Wolfe over Forte, it all starts with the lineman.

Could be
I don’t think he is a top 5 back in the league, but he is very qualified to be our #1 RB. I don’t know who is coaching him, but it doesn’t look like he is running hard ever. We need a time-share backfield to open it up for him.

agreed
Wolfe carried a defender on his back, this kid is tough… but needs to be used sparingly. if Forte isn’t working out, put Wolfe in, like last night. however, when Wolfe gets you yards… DONT run him up the middle, and then yank him out.

Wolf is a good change-of-pace-back
And they need to make sure that that’s how they use him. When they’re stuffing the middle against Forte, and then you stick Wolf in there and allow him to get outside & use his speed – that’s changing things up and giving the defense a different look.
Wolf is obviously not an every-down-back.

how about a 2 back look?
that way they won’t know if forte is going up the middle of wolfe is screening? damn, making sense confuses the bears sometimes

Forte is above average, but
his one weakness is short yardage situations. Most NFL teams have much bigger backs that they use for goal line situations. It’s hard to believe, but the OL in 2008 did a much better job of blocking and they weren’t that good. The 2009 group is pathetic on run blocking.

As bad as our O-line is
I don’t think we’re really in a position to have anyone dive at the goal-line. We should’ve called a play-action, boot-leg or some time of QB roll-out. Offensively, we’re just not a smash-mouth football team any more.

The O-line
is poopy, poop poop.
Forte could’ve played better for sure, but with an O-line like that… not much better. IMHO

Exactly
Give Forte a sliver of daylight and he will gain yards, but right now the OL, especially the interior three, is consistently driven back into the backfield. No runner can consistently make something ot of that.

Nobody thinks, or thought,
that Forte is an elite tailback. As far as pure running backs go, there are a number of better backs: AP, Steven Jackson, Michael Turner, Brian Westbrook, Marion Barber, Frank Gore, Maurice Jones Drew, etc. But when you look at the entire package(pass blocking/blitz pickup, receiving ability), he is a very solid, above average back, who was a relative steal in the second round. I suppose his first round fantasy status has as much to with your disappointment as anything.

Agreed.
All the fans screaming about Forte last night weren’t paying attention to our offensive line’s run blocking. We worked him to death last year and, who knows, perhaps he’s paying the price for it.

Actually a lot of people think that he's an elite back.
A lot of us still think it. Hard to figure what the other guys on your list would do if they ran behind our line.

You think he is an elite runner?
You’re in the minority. He’s a very solid overall back, but in terms of running ability, there are more than a handful of better runners, meaning better moves, more speed, quickness, burst, etc. I like Forte a lot as our back, but I see him for what he is, a reliable(this last game non withstanding) back who does a slew of things pretty well, but one that doesn’t do anything spectacularly.

Not his fault.
Our line is terrible. Just terrible. They aren’t opening any wholes. And the whole idea was supposed to be that with Cutler flinging it downfield, defenses would have to open up and run less packed run defenses for the line to open holes in. Right now, there are no holes of any kind.
Wolfe also popped off for ONE decent run, the one where he broke a tackle and made about 8 yards on it. That’s it. I like him as a player, but he’s never broken a run like either of the two long ones Forte broke last week against Detroit.
Stick with Forte, but fix the line!

This is all i have to say about the forte stuff
has he done anything this year outside of the detriot game? no. plain and simple. why did he do go against detriot? the o line let him get to the line of scrimage to go find a hole. time after time the forte gets nailed in the backfield when he gets a carry. until the line squares up i dont care who you put back there we will have problems. as for wolfe i defnitly think we need to use him but not like idiots running him up the gut. with wolfe we need to do tosses stretch plays and screens to use his speed and elusivness.
and please they need to try that wildcat formation a little more atleast 5 times a game with hester and or wolfe/forte it gives another way to run the ball

Yes, Turner definately needs to shake things up and be more unpredictable
Because we just don’t have the personnel to run the same old stuff every game and expect to beat people. Our running game is approaching 30th in the league…

the o line is to blame
Yeah, forte is somewaht overrated, but the offense line is terrible. How can you expect even a great runningback to bust out of there with no holes or blocks?? But forte is partailly at fault also. I see other teams RB’s and they fight for yards, they power their way through blocks and believe it or not, they even BREAK tackles…Something unheard for the bears. What an embarassing loss…..

The offensive line is the root problem
Run blocking is non-existent with this group. In case anybody has been paying attention, Olin Kreutz has devolved in a real liability. Chris Williams is a work in progress and Frank Omiyale has been below par. Meanwhile Orlando Pace has a million miles on him.
Matt Forte is also suffering from a crisis in confidence. You can see it in the way he tries to hurry up certain run plays instead of letting his vision, patience and instincts be the guiding light.

forte is patient, which is killing him this year
his strength is letting the holes develop. i remember this was something emmitt smith did better than anyone. unfortunately, because our line isn’t creating any holes this year, that puts him at a bigger disadvantage than a RB that just runs north-south. he waits and waits, and when nothing is there, he’s still in the backfield, dodging linemen. our line wasn’t good last year, but it did give him more holes, and once he sees those, he hits them hard. but yeah, if our line doesn’t improve, forte’s strength will be his weakness this year.

Forte is better fit for the future..
of this offense. IMO, he is a Brian Westbrook type who needs to play in space (no, not outer space). He needs to run more traps, sweeps and draws on off downs. Running him straight out of the I-formation, especially to the left (behind Omiyale), is idiotic.
Why has Turner not called for a play-action pass out of the I-formation on 1st and 10????
Wolfe is not the answer, he’s a gimmick on 3rd and a mile for a draw or screen occasionally or to spell Forte rarely. The Bears desperately need a 3rd down back. A veteran guys who knows how to get 1-3 yards when needed, catching a few dump offs on play action that doesn’t fool the LBs, and playing a back-up/mentor role to Forte.
Lastly, if the O-line isn’t capable of blocking 3 or 4 Defenders, then why run 2 TE sets? Especially with the speed the Bears have at receiver, why not run more 4-wide and single back sets with Forte. Why waste Cutler’s options by having TEs stay in to not get 4 guys blocked anyway? Send everyone into the patterns and run mostly shotgun. Let Forte pick up any blitzers or fade out for a screen or swing pass. Then the running lanes may open up.
There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots.
by LostInSTL on Oct 20, 2009 2:27 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
LOL Any play that's running behind Omiyale is idiotic
If not suicidal.
I like the idea of running some 4 wide sets, which again, gives the defense something different to think about instead of letting them “load up” for the same, predictable types of plays.
by JimmyMack on Oct 20, 2009 11:38 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
wow i think Forte is a great back
but i think it all comes back to how you use your weapons.
I couldn’t help but wonder why the Bears aren’t running more (creative) screens like i saw the Chargers (Norv) doing last night to get downfield. Chicago has all the TE’s to set up the play and better passblocking than runblocking so far, so whats the deal ?
on the one hand big play QBs almost never outlet to the RB, but you have to get the running game going, so why not throw to run ?
that offense is strange in Chicago. after the offseason you had, it seems weird to be talking about a lack of identity on offense for the Bears.

I believe Forte long term will be ok but...
Can we all agree that if the Bears again fail to make the playoffs, that Ron Turner’s head should roll? His excuse for that debacle at the 1 yard line is the same broken record we have seen with him for years. I know he did a good job with less than stellar talent last year, but the offense year after year continues to make the dumbest decisions under his guidance. “John Shoopish” if you will, lol.

Forte is not a good back. He lacks football strength, drive, or moves. He falls down if a defender touches him. He can’t evade the first rushing lineman, which all good backs do, he runs into the backs of the o-line too many times. He will never average more than 3.8 yards per carry. Need I go on?
He gets 8 yards on a screen pass, where a decent back would get 12-15 and the first down.
Fridgeman81 makes an excellent point about Bum Turner. Don’t you call a bootleg with a run/pass option for Cutler at the goal line? Esp. when Omy and Kruetz are getting blown up on every run play.

Definite over-reaction.
Who’s running the ball well in the NFL ? Who has the best offensive lines ? Same answers. Put Forte behind the Broncos/Jets/Dolphins/Cowboys OLs and you’d see that he’s just as good as any of the so-called elite backs. If you can’t see that you can’t see talent. Garret Wolfe is twelve inches tall – you think he’s going to get a thousand yards with no blocking ?
