Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson may be headed to Bears
The NFL trade deadline is tomorrow and the Chicago Bears already got themselves a big trade when the team acquired defensive endGaines Adams(notes) on Friday from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And now the team is trying to land a linebacker by tomorrow's deadline, according to the National Football Post.
The need apparently became even more apparent after yesterday's 21-14 loss to the Atlanta Falcons when veteran linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa(notes) went down with a knee injury just after returning from three weeks of recuperating from injury.
The Bears have had a lot of injuries at linebacker this season, with bothHunter Hillenmeyer(notes) and Brian Urlacher(notes) also currently out.
A rumored target is Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson.

I took a look at your links
and so far it looks like sloppy journalism and pure conjecture. Maybe it’s a potential match, but nothing has actually linked the two teams or showed any proof of ongoing talks.

Would be a nice addition… but this is just a rumor/opinion from Brad Biggs.

Offensive Line
Our LBs (minus one play that Roach got confused) looked fine last night. Why would we trade for anything but a left guard or tackle?

i'll tell you why
as bad as our o-line is, we actually have bodies to play the position.

Rib injuries are really bad for all positions including QB. It messes up the throwing motion. They do heal and you can wear flack jackets though. Westbrook played with broken ribs last year.

We did trade for Johnson…
Who’s our starting LB’s next year? Is the one and done for Pisa? Do we see explore trade offers for Urlacher? What the eff happened to the development of Jamar Williams?

I'm not sure what to make of Pisa.
I reckon he came back way too early from his first injury, only to have it re-injured. If he can manage to get healthy, and stay that way, I don’t see him losing his job. But, I could be wrong.
Briggs ain’t going anywhere, and Urlacher will rock it til his wheels fall off, so who knows.
Maybe Urlacher will be our next LB coach…

I would assume
we will sign Derrick Brooks. Pisa is probably landing on IR soon.(PCL) and that will leave us with a hurting HH, Briggs, Roach, Williams, McClover, and Shaw. the latter two we need on special teams as well. we won’t have any depth, and starting both Roach and Williams is a bit shaky, i really see them bringing in Brooks

He’s a natural WLB, and won’t/cannot hold up at MLB. Not really a good fit unless Briggs moves over.

Never know
There’s no history of Briggs anywhere but the weakside. At this point, the Bears may not have another option. The season is over if McClover or whatever his name plays significant time.

Roach and Hunter
have proven to be at least competent MLBs.
Briggs is Briggs.
I’m not sold on Jamar Williams as a starter. McClover is a ST player. Shaw looks a little better on ST than I would have thought, and he’s big, but that does NOT mean he needs to see any significantly playtime. At least this year.
Still, our LB corps isn’t in horrible shape.
by Cosmis on Oct 19, 2009 4:23 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
???
The fact is that we have no Depth, it’s not far off to assume Hunter will be touch and go for the next few weeks at least.
which would then mean Williams is coming in to start, so they don’t rush him back, like what happened with Pisa, who is now probably out for the year. Derrick Brooks makes logical sense

A point on your comment about Shaw
“looking a little better on ST than I would have thought”, I heard on the radio broadcast that he is leading the team in Special Teams tackles. Pretty good for a guy who came in at the last minute. I think he’s been a huge addition.

They're simply not good enough.
The absense of Urlacher is becoming more apparent every week. It’s not just the freakish athletic skills he brings to the field… it’s the leadership. There already have been way too many communication and play call issues on defense, that have either resulted in a huge blown assignment (see Roddy White’s TD last night), or caused us to waste a timeout on defense, where you can see guys screaming at eachother.
It’s a problem.

get as many young, fast, uber-athletic defensive players as you can. Get the ones with a chip on their shoulder. Derrick Johnson…dude was a beast in college. One of the most dominant backers I’ve seen.

I really want us to make this trade. Jonathan Vilma went for a 4th rounder. DJ should be worth a 4th or 5th with option of moving to a 4th or 3rd depending on his performance. If we can take that, we do it and never look back. That is your Urlacher replacement right there folks. He needs a new contract after this season but he’s still only 26. I loved this kid coming out and have seen him make plenty of plays in KC. He has been on a poorly coached team with no other LB talent around him. I hope we pull this one off, I really do.
