NightLink: Will Beekman start?
Who knows if this will actually come to fruition, but it's interesting regardless.
In his presser today, Lovie had some interesting bits about Frank Omiyale and Josh Beekman:
Smith was then asked if inserting Josh Beekman in the starting line-up would constitute a major change, considering Beekman started all 16 games at left guard in 2008."Would it be a major change?" Smith asked. "It would be a change, I don't know about major. It would be a change. Again, we're evaluating things like we do each week, no more than that. Josh has done a good job for us."
I'm not quite sure how to interpret this example of LovieSpeak. Would you like to see Beekman starting? Or are you decently happy with Omiyale?

Here's a thought
Put Beekman at Guard, and have Omiyale spell Pace at LT sometimes

Thats the thing.
I’m a little sick of the “draft/acquire a guy and change their position” trend we’ve seen. Sure sometimes it works but if you want a true, cohesive unit on the O-line we need guys that can gel in their positions because it is their natural position. Omiyale has been an LT all of his years in Carolina backing up Peppers and then we expect him to come in and play guard effectively for a new team. The problem is the only true guard we have is Garza. Omiyale, Shaffer, Pace, Louis and Williams are all tackles and Beekman is the only guy to play any of the guard positions when he is a natural center! This is a bit ridiculous if you ask me and a huge pressing need for this team. This is what gets me about everyone who freaks out about getting another WR, just look at our problems elsewhere on this team and I bet you’ll shut your mouths instantly.

I thought
Beekman was a natural guard, and they are swinging him to be the replacement center?

Here's what I found on Beekman.
College:
Four-year letterwinner (2003-2006) at Boston College, started all 37 contests (34 at RG, 3 at C) in final 3 seasons and 39-of-50 games played overall during collegiate career… Became school’s first player to receive AP first-team All-America honors in five years after senior season… Also named Atlantic Coast Conference’s most valuable blocker during final year… Recipient of the 2006 Jacobs Blocking Trophy for the most valuable blocker in the ACC as a senior… Received Walter Camp Foundation second-team All-America honors and all-ACC first-team accolades as Eagles ranked 2nd in conference in total offense (354.2 ypg) and 3rd in points per game (26.0)… Honored with the Scanlan Trophy, the highest honor bestowed on a Boston College football player given to a senior who best exemplifies the ideals of scholar, athlete, gentleman and friend… Named to The Sporting News Big East All-Freshmen team… Majored in history.
NFL
Made the transition to the starting lineup in his second NFL season, starting all 16 games at LG… Has appeared in 17 games (16 starts), including his NFL debut at GB (10/7/07)… Saw action in all 8 preseason games (4 starts) since 2007, tallying 1 special teams fumble recovery.
2008 SEASON: Started all 16 games at LG, including his first career start at IND (9/7)… Member of the Bears offensive line that had five players start all 16 games… Helped pave the way for RB Matt Forte to break the Bears rookie rushing record (1,238 yards) and finish third in the NFL in scrimmage yards (1,715). GAMES PLAYED-STARTED 16-16
PREVIOUS SEASONS: 2007 – Appeared as a reserve offensive lineman at GB (10/7)… Saw action in all four preseason contests, registering 1 special teams fumble recovery… Inactive for Games 1-4 and 6-16.
The stat about him helping Forte pave the way for the rookie record should be every indication that he needs to be playing LG NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Couldn't agree more.
I’ve made this argument so often that I’m getting tired of making it. Draft/sign players for where they fit, not where you want them to fit.
I can’t blame Omiyale for playing this bad, but it doesn’t matter at this point. He IS playing this bad, and something needs to be done, immediately.

The most telling thing is that Lovie hasn’t come out and said that “We’re seeing things that we like about Frank Omiyale,” which is normal Loviespeak. Perhaps just wishful thinking on my part, but we all need a bit of hope now and then.

Jeez! is an what it will take to put Beekman back in?
I mean you can’t spell offensive linemen. They are a cohesive unit. The only way you pull a player off that line is if they suck, or are injured, and I don’t wish injuries on any player.
But Omiyale is seriously pushing me, the only guy he’s pushed all year.

Forte's strength last year
was the same strength he had at Tulane, and the same strength he still possess now: shiftiness.
He’s not a burner, and not an ox… but he has insanely good vision, and is terrific at finding seams to shift into. The difference this season, in my opinion, is the seams just aren’t there this year.

by dakoose on Oct 19, 2009 5:38 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, his strength is his weakness.
because if the seams aren’t there, then he’s not doing anything. He’s not improvising, he’s not even trying to get physical with the defenders.
If he’s not trying to adjust, then he’s not trying at all.
Last night, Garrett Wolfe, who as early as this offseason, was getting bashed on this blog, with people saying he could get “knocked down by a light breeze” was adjusting by shaking off initial defenders and getting his head down and pushing through for more yardage.
Devin Hester, who was not a “Jumpball” receivers has adjusted so far this season to all of Cutlers high throws. remember his TD in Seattle?
I disagree that Forte has “insanely good vision”. No matter how bad the line is, 3.4 yards per carry and three fumbles in 5 games does not translate into great vision.
If all forte has is his “shiftiness” then he’s about as useful as Mark Anderson and his one spin move.
Camp ifuwanna, we hold you in our heart...

You can argue about his attributes
until you are blue in the face. The same thing I saw from him at Tulane (a couple games in person, and several on the tv) is the same thing he showed last year.
There are only a couple of RBs in the league who can match his vision and shiftiness. Now, I won’t argue with you about him not trying, because that is not something that is easily known.
But, combine the above-mentioned talents, and pair it with decent speed, good pass receiving skills, and great pass blocking, and I would argue that he is much more multi-layered than Anderson (which is apples to oranges btw).
It all starts in the trenches… that is why I think Forte is having trouble this year. And yes, i do agree that Wolfe is playing hard.

What I want to know is when will it sink in with Forte.
Go back when Benson was starter in 2007. Even though the line was horrendous and beat up, Benson himself was particularly bad. Then it was apparent something clicked when they went up to seattle.
He ran harder, he waited for cut routs, and he displayed speed nobody knew he had. it carried into the next game against Denver, which was his last game as a Bear(ironically, Cutler’s first game in soldier field). from that point, Benson has been running hard since.
I just think it hasn’t clicked with forte yet.

+1...
Wolfe is not the answer. Either he or AP needs to make room for a big, angry RB for short yardage situations. Further, why not use spread formations, counter traps, and sweeps to take advantage of the skills that Forte does have. Maybe running to the right with Omiyale pulling might be a better option? He’s is terrible man on man, but he is good at blocking in space. I cannot believe Turner et al cannot see this. Why do they persist in 2 and 3 TE sets. It simply bunches up the offense and puts them in the position where they are least likely to succeed! IMO, Omiyale needs to sit and Beekman needs to start immediately.
There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots.

Don't know that he is
but I see no reason why we shouldn’t find out. It accomplishes two things. It may give us an immediate improvement on the line, helping the running game and increasing Jay’s life span. It also tells us whether he has a legitimate chance to replace Kreutz. If he’s not able to handle blocking assignments as a guard, moving him to center is probably not a good idea.

Bring on the BeekMan!
It was worth taking a shot on Omiyale to see if he could provide an upgrade at Guard. By now we (i.e. Lovie) should realize that Omiyale is not a Guard. Time to end the experiment!
Beekman has been decent when given the chance to play. Plus, now he has some experience, and he doesn’t have St. Clair next to him. Omiyale has been completely unexceptable at Guard. Time to start Beekman.
In the offseason we need to find a solid run-blocking Guard, and have Beekman slide over to take Olin’s place at Center.
by MakeHalasProud on Oct 19, 2009 4:55 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Not sure this will fix anything
but sure, why not? Beekman deserves the shot. I’m more worried about Pace. He did an alright job against John Abraham, who is admittedly an excellent pass rusher. But the two penalties on the last drive killed us. And shouldnt a guy like Pace be getting more of a push up front on those goal line runs? The whole left side of the line — Pace and Omiyale — was just overrun.

Sticking Beekman back in there
Is the right thing to do at this point of the season. The Omiyale experiment has failed miserably. I never really understood why they paid the guy as much as they did in the first place. He was basically a career back-up in Carolina. Right now they feel obligated to play him because he’s making a lot more money than Beekman.
In any event, Beekman was an adequate run-blocker last year. That may have been one thing that helped Fortes’ numbers. St. Clair was just basically a temporary stop-gap. He gave up 9 1/2 sacks last year, and the Bears were right to let him go. Pace on the other hand, only gave up 2 sacks in 14 games for the Rams. Pass-blocking is probably Pace’s strength, though.
This off-season, the team needs to stop playing games, and try to sign the best free-agent lineman available on the market. The line is just too important to the entire offense.

This line is either an injury away from total collapse or significant improvement
“This off-season, the team needs to stop playing games, and try to sign the best free-agent lineman available on the market. The line is just too important to the entire offense.”
Yes. Super yes. This is killing us and the finest runner/passer we have had for some time/ever. Beekman was on an steady upward path but was already (I’m guessing) slated as Kreutz’s replacement so they brought in Omiyale. Chemistry and “gelling” is so overrated when the players suck or are out position. This year seems like a rebuilding year to me with Cutler partly hiding this fact with some great passing.

to be fair - omiyale is a tackle
its clearly not working that well for him at guard, but that’s because there is a big difference between a guard and a tackle. he’s a huge guy, so i do think it was worth giving him a shot to make the adjustment, but its clearly not working. i’d switch in beekman next week and give him a few weeks. also, to preserve pace (who hasn’t played bad overall), get him some breaks in the game, and have omiyale and williams play our tackles during those plays. it’ll keep pace fresher, get omiyale back to his natural position, and allow williams to get some real experience at LT, which is where he’ll probably be full time next year.

Here Is The Deal
Somebody on the Offensive Line is not pulling their weight,(no pun intended). With that said, Frank Omiyale at times looked so lazy Sunday Night it made me sick to my stomach. I don’t have the luxury of looking at film like the Bears coaches do. They have 5 games to look at to determine the weakest link. I like Orlando ’ Pancake’ Pace and 1 critical false start mistake does not change that opinion. I think the Bears may need to look at Williams as well. This line is not opening up holes for Forte. Maybe we could start Beekman and lure John Tate out of retirement.

Not sure about the coming out of retirement thing lol but i do agree that Beekman needs to start now. We can’t afford any more crap DMS Syndrome starters.
