greg olsen...bust watch

If you are a tight end in the NFL and can't block, you must catch every catchable pass thrown in your direction. Olsen has been very bad at making catches across the middle. Specifically if he's going to take a big hit, which leads me to believe he is a puss. Watch the dropped ball he had on Sunday night, he wasn't even looking at the ball, his eyes were on the pending hit he was going to take. You can't do that if you aren't blocking or catching 8 passes a game. He has had a few redeemer moments this year, but he is not even at 75% of what we expect out of him. Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease don't give me the "well we don't have a number one WR help with coverage" excuse either, because our recievers have been just fine this year.

Yes are receivers are doing better than any of us thought. HOWEVER are O-LINE has sucked and thats putting it lightly. Olsen has been required to block more due to the bad play of the O-line and also because D. Clark was hurt early in the season. If you watch Olsen closely during the game you see that when he lines up on the line of scrimmage he has to “throw” or help with blocking. That “small” block that he has to give throws him off the timing (with him and Cutler) and there for his route is slowed. By then time Olsen can get open from his route, Cutler is being pressured from all sides and either has to scrabble out of the pocket, throw the ball quickly, has to run for a few yards, or has been sacked already.

Are You Serious With This Post?

It makes no sense to me. Olsen is thumbs up catching passes over the middle as far as I’m concerned. Maybe I’m missing something

by Gesiakob on Oct 20, 2009 11:48 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

You've missed him dropping passes...

but I am mostly unimpressed with Olsen’s effort in general. I don’t buy the argument that Olsen’s timing is off due to his chipping duties because of the atrocious O-line play. Des Clarke can handle it, so can a younger faster Olsen.

There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots.

Dez Clark

Is also really awesome at quitting on routes, something Olsen hasn’t done yet this year. Everyone drops balls. Olsen is fine. He’s not the huge threat we thought he was going to be, but he’s at least an acceptable starter.

Everyone needs to calm down. It’s not like we lost to the Lions.

Olsen quit on the second Cutler INT...

he quit running on the play and the ball sailed past him and into the hands of the safety. That’s quitting on the route!

Also, I am not (that) concerned that the Bears lost to the Falcons, they had a chance and didn’t get it done, fine! I am more interested in the team’s play and individual efforts on the part of the players. Olsen is not fine, he may be adequate, but (at least so far) not fine! Honestly, I think Olsen has the potential, just not the desire at this point in his career. I put the blame squarely on the coaching staff.

There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots.

yeah

watch marshall last night save orton from an INT (think it was that game) he finished his route and batted the pass down… Olsen gave up

How do you figure it was his fault? Please watch the replay again before you start pointing blame.

Put your damn hands up!

and protect the pass from being Intercepted… it’s that simple, Marshall’s pass was uncatchable, yet he tipped the pass and protected the ball.

Clearly you're missing something .....

….. if you’re not seeing the ton of balls he’s dropping, especially on third down. The guy lacks toughness and hears footsteps. He hurts this team a lot – not just in the receiving game, which we were looking to him to become our top receiver, but if he can’t block (and he cannot block) then he is a waste of space on the roster. Kellen Davis can clearly block/catch and is 6’7 tall. Greg Olsen looked to be a weapon, but is in fact just a big girl ….

All the Bears

It looks like all the Bears are afraid to get it.

1. I am convinced Olsen dropped that TD on 1st and Goal because he was afraid to get it.
2. Johnny Knox caught a quick slant on 3rd and long and tip toed for 2 seconds until the CB came up and hit him.
3. Matt Forte…all the time

It is a mental thing and it probably stems from the coaching. Our players should want to hit the defenders harder than they are hitting us.

Just to add fuel to the fire...

the TD that didn’t happen (#1 on your list) was against a 5’11" CB who wrecked his knee on the play. That’s been my biggest complaint about Olsen since we got him, he plays soft and doesn’t beat people physically like a TE has to. Anybody who watched an aged Tony Gonzalez should have seen the difference. TG was never thought of as a bruiser, but he can still fight people for the ball and take it away, something I don’t think I’ve ever seen Olsen do.

And to BearLovin21, he has 3 TD’s in 4 games but every one of them has been a pretty easy catch, he rarely catches anything in traffic, whether he’s in the end zone or middle of the field. The one long pass to him on Sunday night was the best play he’s made since he’s been a Bear. Not enough production from a 1st round draft pick.

by BearFan611 on Oct 20, 2009 3:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess that's really my complaint...

I would expect less if he had been another late rounder, but he was supposed to be the premier TE in that draft.

Busts aren't supposed to be on pace for 10 touchdowns

Look, he may not be getting a lot of yardage lately but he’s a good redzone threat and he’s only 24, give the guy a full season of starting before declaring him on the bust watch.

by Scribbz on Oct 20, 2009 5:07 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

His TD's are mostly wide open passes.

He had a nice one against ATL, but other than that his TD’s were catches John St. Clair could have made. He’s on pace for 483 yards. That sucks.

Last year, Tony Gonzalez did it.

I’m not saying that Olsen should be a 1000 yard guy, but if he’s our best weapon on offense, and most experts and media types believe him to be, he should, at the minimum, be a 750-800 yard guy annually. Last year seven TE’s had 700+ receiving yards, Nine had 600+ and 15 had 500+. With all of the hype and his supposed place in the offense, he should be in that top seven group.

And then do we complain because

Forte doesn’t get 1000 yds rushing, or Hester doesn’t get thrown at enough. There is so many touchs in a game.

I suppose

He does have 3 TDs and a good ypc though. The offensive line is most to blame for underproduction from skill position players.

I do agree with you there...

The O-line is the source of many a problem with the offense, but Olsen has dropped too many catchable passes this year. He is not a complete TE and probably never will be a great blocker, but this is his 3rd season and he is not getting much better. I am looking for him to get better at catching passes or shedding tacklers or running routes. How many more years will it take?

Good question....

That part is up to him. If he shows steady improvement, then the Bears will hang on to him. Isn’t his contract up next year? Maybe that’s the motivation he needs. My concern is that he fizzles out and gets cut/released only to emerge as a star on some other team. He does have the ability to be a top 5 TE in the NFL, but for some reason he seems to have plateaued in his development. Maybe the coaches are the problem, who knows. I am not about trashing him for the sake of saying he should go, i am hoping to see him improve. I think that’s my frustration with this year’s Bears, they do not seem to have improved over last year overall. The D-line got better but the O-line got worse.

There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots.

by LostInSTL on Oct 21, 2009 11:43 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not sure about that

I highly doubt the Bears would let him go, or regress where they wouldn’t want to resign him. Remember, defenses have been double-teaming him with regularity. This is a good indication on why Knox, Hester, and Bennett have been targeted a lot more often than him. With more success the WRs have, the more attention will be directed away from Olsen.

Agreed...

there are reasons other than Olsen’s play that he has not had success, but I was looking at this from the perspective of what he has done and what he can do. It does help to put it in the larger context of the whole offense. I really see great things for him, but I am concerned about his efforts to date nonetheless. I do want him to succeed, but I am willing to say also that he may not.

How big a bust can a #31 pick be?

2007 NFL Draft:

#30: Craig Davis, WR, LSU – San Diego Chargers
Career: 18 games, 24 rec, 247 yards, 1 TD, 1 – 20+, 2 – 40+, 16 – 1st

#31: Greg Olsen, TE, Miami – Chicago Bears
Career: 35 games, 108 rec, 1116 yards, 10 TD, 14 – 20+, 2 – 40+, 60 – 1st

#32: Anthony Gonzalez, WR, Ohio State – Indianapolis Colts
Career: 30 games, 94 rec, 1240 yards, 7 TD, 18 – 20+, 3 – 40+, 63 – 1st

#38: Zach Miller, TE, Arizona State – Oakland Raiders
Career: 38 games, 121 rec, 1576 yards, 5 TD, 24 – 20+, 2 – 40+, 67 – 1st

I say no – Greg Olsen isn’t a bust today, nor will he be for years to come.

Career numbers are interesting...

but his play this year has been less than stellar. Why is it so hard to admit he hasn’t played well this season? Why is Olsen immune from criticism?

I agree with you on this...

I’m not calling him a complete bust, like a Curtis Enis or Cade McNown, but for all the hype about what he can do, he never does anything great. I don’t have any numbers to back this up, but I’ll bet if you went back and looked at his 108 receptions, at least 100 of those were catches than any of us could have made and his runs after first contact would have to rank near the bottom of any TE in the league.

He's gotten off to a slow start

The drops can be fixed, though, if he starts concentrating. Remember, he had a pretty solid camp. He was a pre-season fantasy league star, and I’m betting that all of the hype went to his head and may have put pressure on him. His numbers should ramp up by the end of the year.

But no, he’s not overly physical and he’s not a great blocker – that’s something he may never be. At this point, I’m a lot more concerned about the O-line and the running game than Greg Olsen.

Olsen is going to be fine and a great target for years to come.

I do believe that he has underachieved so far this year. I really like the play of Davis though and I didn’t even see him on the field Sunday night.

And for those who say look at the TDS ...

I don’t give a damn about TDs if that’s the only catch he makes in the game. Two games got him two TDs in which they were the only pass caught. In the two games he had the ball thrown at him 14 times. That is not what an NFL #1 receiver is expected to do. He’s not a rookie anymore … but he sure plays like one.

by Irish Bears Fan on Oct 20, 2009 11:39 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

TD catches dont matter?

in case you missed the falcons debacle, TD catches are definitely needed. we had 3 possessions get down to the goal line, which resulted in us getting exactly zero points.
and he isnt our #1 receiver, he isnt even technically a receiver.
granted, a more production between the 20s would be real nice, particularly on 3rd downs, but if he only has 3 catches a game and one of them is a TD, i will not be complaining.

by bmbrock on Oct 21, 2009 2:30 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hester, Knox, and Bradley can catch 98 yards on a drive

and 1 yard TD catch by Olsen is perfectly fine for me. Most of the time WR will have the bigger yards number and TE’s get the touch down catchs. He is the biggest reciever we got and therefor the biggest target in the Endzone.

I’ll take 10 TD catches and 400 yards from Olsen.

That’s not true!!! WHY THE F*CK WOULD YOU SAY THAT YOU AHOLE!! Ok maybe your right but you gotta give a little something here for it to work. I don’t know what I’m going to do this is the worst thing I’ve ever read, this day could not get any worse. Fine, F*ck it, you’re right.

i agree completely

most of you are worried with fantasy numbers. in the redzone olsen is our guy with his size and skill he should be catching one yar tds because god knows how hard it is for the line to block for forte to punch it in. he has a td in three straight games i dont care if its a 1 yrd td or 99yrd td sure 99 yards is awesome but do you get more points?
i think he will come around he is not a bust at all every year on the team he has had more catches yards and tds each year how is that a bust?
we knew he was never a good blocker i wont lie that is not hes strong point that is why we use so many two tightend sets. Olsen CAN play better and he has begun to do so i beleive his next ten games will reflect that

by Bear Lovin 21 on Oct 22, 2009 10:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Olsen will likely never be a great blocker.

He needs to be a serviceable blocker (I think he’s getting close).

Biggest thing, (which many of you have stated) is the drops in traffic… He’s got to get better at catching the ball with a defender on him… Teams from the get go, have been draping corners on Olsen… meaning (because of the speed of corners), he will have a defender in his pocket when the ball gets there a majority of the time.

With Olsen’s size, I’m surprised it’s been such a challenge for him to this point. The good news is, this issue is correctable… And if he does correct it (hopefully sooner than later) he will be a force.

by rdent4hof on Oct 21, 2009 7:59 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

yup

You are correct. Please look at the situation objectively folks, TD catches = good. Constant drops over the middle coupled with no blocking = bad.

by jimribs on Oct 21, 2009 8:04 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

He is not a bust

but has been dissapointing this year. He has dropped way too many passes and I would like to see him play a bit more physical. I can live the poor blockng if he can be a great receiver. Still waiting on that…

Roachy love the run stuffin', but don't forget about the TE over the middle!!

by tfrabotta on Oct 21, 2009 10:36 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

thats how i feel too

if you aren’t good at one area, thats fine, so long as you can compensate in other areas. also i am not declaring him a bust, just putting him on “bust watch” until the end of the year.

by jimribs on Oct 21, 2009 11:10 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

haha

i’ve been doing that type of “bust watching” for quite some time as well. remember what george costanza says about cleavage “its like the sun, you look but you can’t stare, its dangerous”

CHILL OUT

Ok so he dropped some passes. Have any of you realized that this Bears team has actually been really good in the passing game as compared to, I don’t know, the last 50 years. Our main issue in the Atlanta game was the fact that Cutler had more rushing yards on 1 carry than Forte had all game. If you want to rip Olsen’s blocking, go ahead, but the passing game has been good enough to win.

by Uncle Stanley McGoober on Oct 21, 2009 11:51 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah it has

but i wouldn’t say its so flawless, that they can afford mistakes like drops on balls that would be first downs.
