Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

Key Player to keep an eye on: Our own Greg Olsen

                                Greg-olsen_medium

via i.cdn.turner.com

Star-divide

I'm not going to focus on one of Cincy Line backers like was intended to. Instead I'm going to focus on Tight End Greg Olsen who has not been living up to the preseason hype. Through five games Olsen has a total 15 catches for 151 yards 10.1 avg 3 TD's, not exactly Stellar numbers when Green Bays second string TE Jermicheal Finley is putting up 16 catches 244 yards. Greg Olsen needs to step up and be the elite TE that we know he can be. That means start breaking tackles, start hanging on to the football when it hits your hands, and start being more aggressive when the ball is in the air. We see sparks of this in the 2nd half of the Atlanta game and I want to see him continue building on that in the next game. I don't want to see less talented Tight Ends like Visanthe Shiancoe out perform him each and every week.

In reference to

the Olsen/Finley difference, isn’t it really just that one big play against Minnesota, that gave Jermichael a bunch of those yards?

I see, nevermind that then

But I would love to see Olsen make plays like that.

no kidding

the pass that sailed over his head a bit against the falcons, and TD pass he missed… wow what a game difference if he makes those catches.

He redeemed himself after that TD pass he missed

I think this is a big opportunity for him to have a big game against these Bengals Linebackers and Safeties.

certainly hope so

he’s way overdue

Two things

A. Jermichael Finely, if second string on the depth chart, is no second stringer. The guy is the real deal and we have to play him a lot for years to come.

B. Owen Daniels destroyed the Bengals in the red zone last week so lets go Gregory, BEAR DOWN!

???

I’d take Shiancoe over Olsen any day. That guy is a beast. He’s a good blocker and he catches everything thrown his way. I’m all for hating on the Vikings but seriously, just because a guy plays for a team you dislike, doesn’t mean he sucks.

by McRipper on Oct 23, 2009 8:26 AM CDT reply actions

Shiancoe is not more talented than Olsen. He is better used by the coaching staff than Olsen however.

Got deleted cause you were cussing.

There is a difference between being critical and calling someone a “cat”. Big difference.

Olsen probably should be

but he has not shown that he is a star player by any stretch yet. A lot of folks, me included, thought Olsen would have a monster season. He is not on pace for anything all that special, so it is reasonable to wonder why.

Expectation

He doesn’t have to break records to be a contributor. I think we all had really high expectations of Olsen coming into the season. He hasn’t met those expectations but has still contributed and is a productive TE in the NFL. Sure he isn’t a top 5 like we thought, but I’d give him top 10.

by brands735 on Oct 24, 2009 9:58 AM CDT up reply actions

He is playing short of reasonable expectations

at least so far.

3 TDs in 5 games? That puts him on pace for 9-10 TDs this year and 500 yards. For a TE, 9 TDs is a lot of contribution.

Is he perfect? No. Is he struggling in run blocking? Yes. But for the most part, he gets it done when it counts in the Red Zone. (I’ll give you his drop last week against ATL in the end zone).

by brands735 on Oct 24, 2009 10:26 AM CDT up reply actions

are you friggin kidding me?

I predict that you’re wrong.

Olsen has been horrible this year (please look at the videos [38 sec and 42 sec]of him trying to block). I was excited this preseason but he can’t block, and he isn’t effective in the passing game (he had the “miscommunication” with cutler on that INT, he fell down 2 times during the Pitt Game and dropped 3 passes in this game as well— including the safety hit one)

Greg Olsen might very well be a bust, and no matter how good of friends he is with our QB if he can’t get it done on the field he’s screwed.

Stop believing the Hype

when chicagobears.com says oh we hope we can get him more involved, they aren’t serious, they’re trying to light a fire under him because he’s been playing subpar

to be frankly honest I’ve been more impressed with Kellen Davis

OMG greg olsen only has 3 TDs in 5 games, he should at least have 17 by now!

but for a first round draft pick don’t you think he should have more

on the real though

Olsen is averaging 3 catches per game, is that what you envisioned when we drafted him 31st overall?

it’s not that he’s not getting the targets either.

His blocking is so horrible. it makes me cringe, do you realize that he actually pushed a LB into Matt Forte at the 43 sec in that clip. These aren’t isolated incidents, watch for it on Sunday.

Sweetness Lives posted these stats on the other thread:

“#30: Craig Davis, WR, LSU – San Diego Chargers
Career: 18 games, 24 rec, 247 yards, 1 TD, 1 – 20+, 2 – 40+, 16 – 1st

#31: Greg Olsen, TE, Miami – Chicago Bears
Career: 35 games, 108 rec, 1116 yards, 10 TD, 14 – 20+, 2 – 40+, 60 – 1st

#32: Anthony Gonzalez, WR, Ohio State – Indianapolis Colts
Career: 30 games, 94 rec, 1240 yards, 7 TD, 18 – 20+, 3 – 40+, 63 – 1st

#38: Zach Miller, TE, Arizona State – Oakland Raiders
Career: 38 games, 121 rec, 1576 yards, 5 TD, 24 – 20+, 2 – 40+, 67 – 1st"

Looks pretty good for his draft position huh? Look up the stats buddy and start drinking the kool aid, its tasty!

"First Round Draft Picks are the opiate of the masses"

good for his draft position? from the 2006 NFL Draft

Round 4

  1. Owen Daniels, TE, Wisconsin — Houston Texans
    Career: 38 games, 165 receptions, 2004 yards, 9 TD
(numbers adjusted to timespan in which Greg Olsen and Owen Daniels have both been in the league)

I’d also like to add that OD is from Naperville, IL

As for his numbers Greg gets so many targets but he drops the ball, I mean could you believe that he let that CB strip the ball from his hands in the endzone last week against Atlanta? The game is on the line the ball hits your hands and you aren’t going to make a play on the ball??? Please see what a real TE does when their team gets near the Endzone

now besides the stats, anyone with an eye for football eyes can tell that Olsen is a horrific blocker, I don’t mean like oh don’t worry about it gipper you’ll get it next time, but like it may actually be better if we were playing with 10 guys bad.

If you think 3 catches a game, tuuurrible blocking, lack of focus, and loose hands whenever he hears footsteps is good, you aren’t drinking Kool-Aid it’s something far worse

the blocking is what kills me

there are some positives in the passing game with #82 but my god man. stop sucking so bad at blocking pls g-reg. i mean really, we all see this; to think that halas hall actually trumpeted his improved blocking ability this year due to blahblah.

that daniels clip is impressive

by reefermadness3 on Oct 24, 2009 7:26 PM CDT up reply actions

So...

Cause Houston found a diamond in the 4th round, that means our TE is not good?
Olsen is still improving. I will agree his blocking is god awful (see Forte fumble #1 at the goal line last week). However defenses ARE game planning for him is what I don’t think people realize. They aren’t just letting him roam free like multiple other TEs in the league. So far he has been productive, not Pro Bowl, but productive. To say Kellen Davis is better than Greg Olsen is just absurd.

Don't know

if this is reliable but:
http://stats.washingtonpost.com/fb/leaders.asp?range=NFC&type=Receiving&rank=232&year=

Don’t see his name on there so your “so many targets but he drops the ball” doesn’t have that many facts behind it. I like because he dropped 1 pass he all of a sudden drops everything to you.

by brands735 on Oct 25, 2009 8:20 AM CDT up reply actions

that link isn't a valid source

Here are two videos of Olsen dropping the ball

1. ATL TD ( drop at 3:50)
2. PITT Safety hit

I do not have a link for every drop Olsen has made…. but here are the “Easy” drops I’ve counted for the past 3 games

ATL 1 (in this same game his miscue with cutler that led to an INT)
Lions 1
PITT 3 (I did mention the 3 drops in a fanpost I wrote on September 21st)

Greg Olsen really disappointed me this week, he had 3 drops and he slipped in the endzone which could have cost us a TD. Where’s all the Chemistry???

—JohnnyTruant

"so many targets but he drops the ball" doesn’t have that many facts behind it.

—Brands

Please son, too easy!

Targets 36
Catches 15

The League average for TE’s is 108 yards, Olsen has 151 yards, now tell me is his pass catching ability so great that it makes up for his lack of blocking, and to a lesser extent his route running? No!

Brands, he’s been on the team for 3 years and hasn’t made any significant strides or improved his technique at all. Does Greg Olsen have upside? Yes, but upside after 3 years is just that, unrealized potential.

To say Kellen Davis is better than Greg Olsen is just absurd.

—Brands

really? Kellen Davis has better blocking abilities (as seen in the Pittsburgh game), better size (GO 6’5’’ 252 lbs, KD 6’7’’ 262), longer reach, and have you even looked at his stats!!?!?

You say that GO has 3 TDs and it’s all good, KD has 2 TDs while being on the field a fraction of GO’s %!

So let’s take a look at this shall we?
KD has 8 targets and 7 receptions. His one drop came against Pittsburgh (the same game in which Olsen had 3 very easy drops).

Maybe if you weren’t so infatuated with Draft Ranking you could see we have a diamond in the rough, his name is Kellen Davis and he’s a beast. If it makes you feel better he probably would have been drafted in the 2nd round (as opposed to the 5th round) if he hadn’t gotten into a fight at school.

Game Over!

Good Stuff!

Thanks for bringing some levity to the notion that Greg Olsen is a bust. He was a late 1st round steal.

by Gesiakob on Oct 25, 2009 12:44 PM CDT up reply actions

You still brought no stats on his drops. You brought up one time he got ROCKED and couldn’t hold on and then the ATL drop that we all know about.

Just cause someone is targeted and they don’t get a reception doesn’t mean it is a drop. You seem to imply if someone is targeted and they don’t catch it whether it is a bad throw or batted down, its a drop.

Not saying Kellen Davis is bad. But he isn’t better than Olsen

by brands735 on Oct 25, 2009 12:51 PM CDT up reply actions

no im not kidding you

Hes been decent in the redzone and down the middle without roy williams in the middle the bengals wiil give up some plays to him. but hey your entiteled to your opinion. all good

we all know blocking is not his strong suit…neither is it with other pass catchers like dallas clark owen daniels carlson ettc etc not saying olsen is up there yet.

how is he a bust? hes improved his first two seasons by adding 20 more catches 200 more yrds and 3 more tds. This year he is off to a slow start but others have picked up the slack bennet hester and knox and yes kellen davis has looked great when he gets his chance. he has had his flashes this year the pick in atlanta i dont know how olsen is to blame to it was 5 yards over his and 3 yards down field overthrown pass get over it.

You talk about his drops what about his catches? in that same game he got nailed over the middle but held on and on that drive knox scored a gametying td. in that game the saftey hit him along the side line he made the catch in bounds with two feet but he was going to the ground out of bounds and bobbled and was hit helmet to helmet lol not a flat out drop man.

3tds in his last 3 games and hes a bust? there are ten games to gohe usually begins to pick it up later in the season.

Wont argue against clark or davis both have been great.
