Warren Sapp Bashes Jerry Angelo

In this Biggs article, he tells of Warren Sapps's visit to the Mully & Hanley Show on the Score this afternoon. Apparently, since back in '95 when Angelo was a personnal director for the Tampa Bay Bucs and drafted Sapp, Sapp has not been a fan of our current GM.

Star-divide

"I'm not an Angelo fan. He was in Tampa the whole time I was there,'' Sapp said. "Trust me we had discussions about different things, no, no thank you, you all can have him.

"Trust me, we were discussing players, this player, that player, because I was [there] in the beginning back in '95 when we were building the thing, you know before Mike Alstott, before [Warrick] Dunn, you know Karl "The Truth" [Williams], all the players we were picking up when [Tony] Dungy was there, and I was watching the evaluation. I had conversations so trust me, you all can have him.''

Sapp said Angelo was averse to making drastic moves and he "just [did] enough to not get noticed and not get fired.''

Interesting...he also weighed in on the Cutler deal by

...asserted that Angelo didn't trade for quarterback Jay Cutler as much as the Denver Broncos gave him away. Sapp said Cutler will be the perfect quarterback for the Bears when the weather turns at Soldier Field this...

Lol... heard that.

And Jerry responded today admirably.

Kinda funny when he doesn’t give Jerry any credit, then Jerry turns around and points out that he drafted Sapp. Lol

Jerry also drafted Briggs right?
but busted on how many? yet the steeler’s/patriots/colts continue to build winning orginizations, and the Bears continue to flounder the talent we have, when we should continually be in the playoffs

Yeah there are a couple other things

Sapp lists off all the other players they got to win that Super Bowl, and how many of those did Angelo have a hand in drafting?

But on the other hand, if Sapp talked with him a lot and stuff, maybe he did see that Angelo didn’t really know how to evaluate and might have been an idiot. The good moves can all be described with the old phrase, even a blind squirrel occasionally finds a nut.

thank you!

i couldn’t think of the phrase. but like most Chicago ownership, we’re content to keep playing that loveable loser image, and it’s our fault really, because we keep selling out the seats.

so why spend more money, when you can field mediocre teams, and still have sellouts

I have an idea!!!!

Why don’t you go and become a “steeler’s/patriots/colts” fan. There are a lot of the other 32 teams that the bears are better than. Why don’t any of you guys mention that once in a while instead of always bad mouthing the team you allegedly like.
I thought a bears blog would have some people that were actually bears fans!

i confidently predict a Bears victory every single week.

Just because we're Bears fans...

…it doesn’t mean we have to suck up what the organisation is giving us (or, rather, failing us) with a smile. I would rather be a thinking fan who can criticise his own team for shortcomings than a cocksure idiot who doesn’t engage beyond putting on a foam cheese hat and shouting at a game in an alcoholic daze.

I'm on the fence regarding Angelo, but...

what makes Warren Sapp an expert? I enjoy him on Inside the NFL and liked him as a player, but I don’t know why he would be considered a talent evaluation expert. For those of you were Bulls fans in the 90’s, you probably remember Michael Jordan’s ability to spot talent…he was terrible. Everyone he would want turned out to be busts or mediocre in the NBA and when he was the GM of Washington, he couldn’t draft at all.

My point is, that just because someone was a player, even of MJ’s stature, it doesn’t mean they know anything about actually putting a team together.

I'm not saying one way or the other

Because you are right. I even said both sides of it (Angelo had some part of drafting the rest of their Super Bowl team) and that possibly he is an idiot, I don’t know which is true. My point was it’s interesting to get Sapp’s view on him. Especially the part about doing just enough to not get fired (because I think before the Cutler trade that was the feeling a lot of Bears fans had of him).

by GallopingGhost on Oct 22, 2009 10:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Before the Cutler trade

Angelo had a reputation of being a very conservative GM who didn’t take the necessary risks to make the team better.

I like that metaphor

And to weigh in (since I know everyone here is wondering what the wise wennington4 is thinking) I think JA is a decent GM but not the guy that we want. Yes, he has made some good draft choices in later rounds and pulled a CutlerRabbit out of his rear, but that alone does not make him a good GM. Jerry has made terrible early selections. Look at the past two years early picks. Chris Williams had back problems and we didn’t fully investigate it. Henry Melton, Juaquin Iglesisas, Jarron Gilbert, how are their rookie seasons going? Then we can look at some of the contracts he’s handed out…
Long story short, JA is a middle of the pack GM for a team that ought to be continually in the title hunt.
/end rant

Who Cares What Fat Boy Sapp Says............

Obviously his coaching career is on hold and he barely gets by as a color analyst. This guy just wants attention any way he can get it. Need I bring up the Dancing With The Stars fiasco?

What a dipshit.

I’m not the world’s biggest Jerry Angelo fan, but he knows a lot more about building a winning football team than Warren friggin Sapp.

Angelo was a scout for for the Giants when Ray Perkins was head coach. Perkins sucked balls, and got replaced by Bill Parcells. With Parcells, Angelo was part of a scouting department that built the foundation for 2 Super Bowl winners (’86 and ’90).

When Ray Perkins became the head coach of the Tampa Bay Yucs in 1987, Angelo got hired as the Director of Player Personnel. The first two drafts: Vinny Testaverde and Paul Gruber were their #1 picks. Gruber, in case you forgot, was the Bucs LT for the 12 years! Not too shabby. Then, I imagine Perkins started influencing the draft with his uber crap-tastic-ness… and Bucs wasted a bunch of high #1 picks for years. Perkins was shown the door, and replaced by Sam Wyche, another crappy coach, who got lucky 1 year because he had Boomer Esiason.

When Wyche finally got the boot, Dungy came aboard. Guess what happened: they drafted both Warren Sapp (and his big fat mouth) and Derrick Brooks in the first round of their first draft in 1995.

Good personnel people aren’t going to make a big difference, when you have a crappy head coach calling the final shots. When Ray Perkins says, “I wanna go with this guy” Well… you’re screwed from the start.

Sapp is an idiot

He is TERRIBLE on TV. TERRIBLE. He never has anything insightful to say, he tries way to hard to be funny, he just looks uncomfortable on set. He’s in Emmit Smith territory.

by wiltfongjr on Oct 23, 2009 9:03 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's really just this simple.

Angelo is a ‘good GM.’
Lovie is a ‘good HC.’
The McCaskeys are ‘good owners.’

And basically here’s what you get with that combination.

A team that is . . . GOOD!

Not terrible (see Detroit. Cleveland, Oakland, St. Louis, etc).

Not ’CONSISTANTLY" excellent (see Steelers, Indy, Pats, Giants, etc).

For those that are happy being ‘Middle-Of-The-Road’ you should be happy with the power structure in Chicago.

For those (such as myself) who would like to see us in the conversation as among the best teams in the NFL, these guys have proven (to myself) that they’re not enough.

It’s simply just that simple.

by GeoMak on Oct 23, 2009 4:39 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Have to disagree about the McCaskeys

They’re one of the worst owner-families in football… I think the Bears are an average/good football team in spite of the McCaskeys – not because of them.

by JimmyMack on Oct 23, 2009 9:25 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I was trying to be kind to them.

That said, I wouldn’t put them in the territory of, say, the Bidwill or the Brown families.
I will give the family credit for kicking Michael to the curb.

Of course, they are the ones that made him President to begin with.
But at least they eventually corrected that monumental blunder.

by GeoMak on Oct 23, 2009 10:42 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, they're not the worst

But I’d put the McCaskeys easily in the bottom 5-10 in the NFL. I think Al Davis is the worst owner in football, right now. I’d put the Browns owner and Henry Clay Ford of the Lions in the bottom 3 with Al Davis.

by JimmyMack on Oct 23, 2009 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

My view of ownership is essentially this:

As long as they’re not ’calling the shots (ala Al Davis & Jerry Jones) then all that matters is who they hire as GM and/or HC.

Georgia Frontiere was a ditzy blond/former show girl who made one really intelligent move as owner: She hired Dick Vermeil who brought her a Lombardi trophy.

As much as I dislike the McCaskey’s (and I really do) because they have hired competent men as their GM and HC, I have to rate them a little higher than do you.

It pains me to say that but I have to in all fairness.

They don’t seem to meddle and they have competent people in place.

I would give them a grade of ‘C.’ That said, we deserve grade ‘A’ ownership.

Pay-per-view event, battle of the Sapps...

Warren Sapp Vs. Bob Sapp

Winner gets Angelo!

I’d drop some cheddar for it!

Funny,

the fact that Warren Sapp disapproves of JA actually earns Angelo some points in my book. :-)

Angelo’s a mixed bag, which equates to mediocrity…he’s had some brilliance (Hester, Briggs, etc.) and some blunders….at times he’s been too conservative for my tastes…and maybe it’s more a failure of coaching than GM, but I find the fact that SO MANY ex-Bears go on to be productive elsewhere to be really, really frustrating and embarrasing and annoying:

Engram, Thomas Jones, Chris Harris, Colombo, now even Benson!!
lesser extent—Bradley, Gage, etc etc.

That bugs me.

What loudmouth Warren Sapp says doesn’t, though.

by Amishbear on Oct 23, 2009 3:31 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Since when is Sapp the greatest evaluator of talent though?

He was a great player, but good players don’t always translate to being good talent evaluators (Matt Millen).
