Update: Tommie Harris Not Expected to Play Sunday
Per the Trib, Tommie Harris is expected to miss the game Sunday against the Bengals.
Bears defensive tackle Tommie Harris is expected to be sidelined for Sunday's gameagainst the Bengals with a knee injury after missing his third consecutive practice Friday.
His left knee has given him problems since the 2007 season, when he first injured it against the Cowboys.
Marcus Harrison has gotten first-team reps at defensive tackle with Harris sidelined and should step in next to nose tackle Anthony Adams.
UPDATE- 3:11pm ET: Harris will be officially listed as Doubtful for the game Sunday, meaning there is a 25% or less chance that he will play. Said Lovie Smith:
"Tommie still has some (knee) soreness from the last game," Smith said. "I can't spend a lot of time concerned about guys that can't (play) right now. I just want them to continue to get treatment and get better. That's what Tommie is doing."

Strange world we live in.
Not too long ago, this would’ve been a devastating blow to our team. It’s crazy how quickly some players decline. I’m excited to see Harrison get some more snaps though. I’d also love to see Gilbert get thrown in the mix.

Yep
Someone mentioned him by surname only in another thread and I had to think for a moment, “Harris who?” … thought it was some old-timer talking about Chris Harris for a moment. Totally forgotten about Tommie being on the team squad.

Wait a cottonpickin' minute!
Didn’t someone say (I think it was Geauxbears) that Angelo said Harris’s health ISN’T an issue on a radio interview. More mixed messages and misdirection coming from Hallas Hall? Like when Williams had back issues at the beginning of training camp last year but we were all told he was fine?? Harris is ALWAYS hurt, why say his health isn’t an issue? Ever?
If you can't laugh at yourself you must not be very funny.
He did say that yesterday.
He was talking about Harris’ overall performance this season, and not necessarily just this week. But, maybe he didn’t know Harris would be missing Sunday either.

Did you hear
JA take one of those big breaths, with the slightest little sigh at the end, right when he was talking about Harris?… I laughed so hard… No wonder he complimented Sapp so much… Sapp actually contributed to Angelo’s success. Ever since Harris signed on the dotted line last, he’s been a money pit and you know it’s gotta eat at Angelo.
My thoughts exactly.
He lied in two separate interviews.
Metal sharpens metal.
And this guy right here understands and knows what leadership is all about: The coach, the hall of famer......... Dick Butka! George Ryan
And JA looks like he's trying to cover up the fact that Harris is still hurt
Harris just hasn’t been right since camp.
They need to $h#t or get off the pot with Harris. Either he’s hurt and he needs to have surgery or treatment – or he’s not.
If he can’t play, then they need to try to get him healthy and not play him when he’s “75%”, or whatever. In the mean-time he’s basically a part-time player who’s taking up a roster spot.
Perhaps he's trying to keep his health a secret to entice other teams to trade for him during the off-season.
Someone on this site mentioned recently, that there has to be a team out there that would see TH as the perfect reclamation project. If they thought he physically couldn’t perform anymore, that would take them out of the running.
I wouldn't bet against that.

i don't know the numbers contract wise (comeone should figure that out)
but better chance he is cut since he probably has 0 trade value.
what a waste of money this guy has been.
From GB
on this thread.
He got his biggest roster bonus this year.
Here’s his contract by year:
2009: $620,000 + $6.67 million roster bonus
2010: $1.235 million + $2.5 million roster bonus
2011: $2.3 million
2012: $2.5 million

pretty reasonable
i think we should be able to trade him, maybe for some o-line help. he’s not worth that money right now, but if he ever gets healthy again, he would be a bargain. that’s probably enough to entice some team.

The Redskins would be the only team that would entice
but they’d probably have to give him a raise.

Good!
This is good – T Harris is the weakest link of our starting D.
Maybe we’ll activate Gilbert this week?
Note: nobody would trade for Harris. He’s now a subpar player with a fat contract (well, maybe the Raiders would – except they already traded for Seymor). We need to cut him = get a better player on the field & save cap room.
This is not what we need right now, this has been an injury plagued year.
I cant stand when we have years like this.

Not a big deal IMO
He hasn’t made many plays so far this year, so I expect better results from Harrison and Adams.

yea but what if one of them goes down, god forbid, we just dont have alot of depth this year on D.

DLine...
DE’s: Brown, Ogun, Adams, Anderson
DT’s: Harris, Adams, Harrison, Izzy, Gilbert, Big Toe
I’d say our front four is still pretty deep.

I am so shocked!!!
Ok not really. He’s been hurt all year so maybe someone who’s 90-100% is better than the 5% we are getting out of him.

hmm.
does anybody know the Bears cap situation next season?
I've got this thing and it's fucking golden!
I'm curious
What is really wrong with his knee? Last we heard it was scar tissue that was removed, which at the time I thought that was not the complete story. I think it may have more t do with that hamstring injury he had where it was torn from the bone. I would like to know.
"Chance favors the prepared mind." - Pasteur
Funny how things change.
Knowing Tommie would be out used to cast a shadow over the week’s game.
Now knowing Tommie will be out is almost good news. Maybe Harrison will show some passion on the field, or at least not look so damn tired.
harris 'ain't right
he’s not even getting doubled teamed anymore, and he’s getting beat. i hate to say it (because he was a monster), but i think the knee and hamstring injuries have effectively ended his career as a good-to-dominant player. he still makes a few occasional plays, but that’s the exception, not the rule.
Who is Tommie Harris?
Is he that guy that USED to play for the Bears…?
Seriously, though—I saw him gimping around in the GB game and knew his knee was bum, that he’d be out for portions of this season.
The unfortunate (and most frustrating part) is that you KNOW—as soon as the Bears cut him—he’ll get healthy and blossom someplace ELSE.
F@#!$^%&*! Goddammmmit.
It would be great
in a fantasy world if we could trade a team Harris for a high draft pick and get Ndamukong Suh next year. It’s only a dream…
We;d have to trade
a lot more than Harris to get a pick that high.

In other news: The sun rises from east to west.
Seriously though, when is he going to be 100% and regain his old super bowl-season form? I miss him.

With Harris Out...
…hopefully we can get a look at Gilbert. Although I kinda agree that enough is enough with Harris, remember that Anderson and Wale are FA’s at the end of the season. That’s alot of turn over. The good news is Harris rarely practices, so hopefully the others are getting better as we go.
Getcha Beernuts Ready!
i believe
that Rod will “turn around” and Lovie will “like what he sees” from Gaines Adams… so we have one of those covered, and i would assume we’ll probably resign Anderson because he’ll come cheaper.
And Harris is a DT, we have plenty of depth there, so it wouldn’t matter if Harris left

Harris($11,926,200) and Vasher ($3,300,000) are dead weight
If/when they start or play they are not very good. I was all for the Harris signing when it happened, but he is clearly not worth the contract. $12 million dollars we are paying for his subpar performance (if healthy) and the $3 million going to Vasher (for what exactly?), that makes about $15 million dollars we could be and should be appropriating elsewhere. $15 million can buy a lot of good football players, not to mention we are already under the cap as is.
$15 million dollars this year to guys with negligible effects on the field… Sorry but the truth is the elite teams in the NFL are maximizing their $15 million while we are mismanaging it. Hypothetically if we were to cut Tommie (penalty ramifications aside) we could afford (but probably wouldn’t pay) 3-4 players capable of contributing immediately, including his replacement. Just sayin…
15 million
would easily buy J Peppers next year

What are those numbers?
Harris signed a 4 year/ $40mil contract in 2008, with guaranteed money included. Some of it is incentive-based, but not much.
He’s already been paid the largest chunk of his salary ($6.67 mil paid this year in roster bonus)
His cap hit was $9 million, so I’m not sure what you are talking about numbers-wise. But I do agree that we should either try to trade Tommie after this season (I wonder what we’d ask for him, and I wonder who’d be willing to pay him $2.5 mil+ over the next three seasons)…
We’ll probably just end up cutting our losses after this season and cutting him though.

u are right my numbers are whack
got them from a foxsports news site (first link that pooped up via my google search and from what i can decipher they were last years #’s against the cap)…. while i admit my numbers are off (is there an official salary page?), the $9 million cap hit + $6.67 bonus = $15.67 million is even more egregious….
Interesting that you think we will cut him and I would like to learn more about arguments for and against doing so. what would the penalty be for cutting him? what would we save? Maybe we wait to make sure we can sign other free agents that get cut by their respective teams?
With ZERO draft power/picks this year we need as much cash for free agency as possible as free agency is the only means for improving this Bears team in the near future.
Cutting Harris
I don’t think there will be a penalty with the uncapped season starting next year. I might be wrong though.
harris is done as a bear after this year, i think
the guy is a head case. he feuds with both his line coaches pre-rod, he doesn’t rehab the way the bears want him to, he’s never healthy, he’s not a dominant player (he doesn’t even draw double teams, and still rarely makes an impact) – honestly, unless he somehow turns it around this year, good riddance. he and vasher are both just dead weight to us this year. for the money we pay them, we could get really good players at their positions.
Agreed
Vasher may still be needed as a backup (although an expensive one). He knows the system and can spell Tillman or Bowman if they get hurt or need to sit out a play. If the Bears can add some depth at corner, Vasher definately becomes expendible, though.
The Bears may also need to pick up another tackle for insurance if they let Harris go. I think Adams and Harrison are playing well in the middle, though.
I actually think this write up is inherently flawed starting with the title.
This implies that he HAS been playing for the Bears this season, and I for one, have yet to see Tommie Harris on the field.
If you can't laugh at yourself you must not be very funny.
He's been laying down on
the very same yard lines that used to reach up and tackle Cedric Benson.
