Is Tommie Harris injured?

Wcg_thumb_link_medium
PFT reports that Tommie Harris is claiming that the Bears Injury Report "wasn't true".  Is it possible that Harris was a healthy scratch in an attempt to get a message across?

Articles like this seem to support the notion that the team may be coming apart at the seams.  If Harris was a healthy scratch, then he should have been labled as so without manipulating the injury report.  If Harris were actually injured, he should not be calling out the team publicly for fudging the injury report.

None of this bodes well for a team coming off one of its worst shellacking in recent memory.  I have been an ardent supporter of the Bears and their coaching thus far this season, but the events of the past week have me questioning my support.

Update: Lovie Smith revealed in his presser today that it was a coaching decision to sit Tommie, not because he was hurt.   Link to article by Brad Biggs.

Screw Tommie Harris. He’s trying to play games with the media, and is acting like a jerk. He very well may be not giving a shiat anymore, and if so, keep his arse on the bench.

I respectfully disagree with your analysis..

The three technique DT, as has been said before, is the key to this defense, and the big difference between the Cincinnati game and the previous games was the absence of Tommy Harris this last Sunday. I’d rather have Harris playing, based on what I saw last weekend..

by GtM on Oct 26, 2009 5:07 PM CDT up reply actions

In every single game that Tommie has played, the defense gave us a chance to win...

In the NFL, that’s all you ask for. We won games vs Pittsburg, Detroit and Seattle as well, so with TOmmie, it also appears we win too. Now, I’m not saying that Tommie is the solution to our problems, or that his improving his level of play wouldn’t help this team, but I am very, very thankful he’s avaialable to play the three technique on DL for my Bears – particularly after watching his available “replacements” vs CIncinatti.

by DisCUBbobulated on Oct 26, 2009 5:22 PM CDT up reply actions

respectfully

i also wish to disagree with you.
Tommie Harris has not given us a chance to win the Seahawk’s or Steelers’ or the Lions’. that’s reaching IMO,
against the Seahawks and Steelers and Lions, special teams play really weighed in on the outcome. not to mention all three teams passed ALL over us.

Tommie played for the ATL game, and GB is i’m not mistaken, so that would discount the Tommie plays, Bears win theory

My apologies if I wasn't communicating clearly..

I didn’t say that Tommie Harris single handedly gave the bears a chance to win. I am trying to make the point that the “get rid of Tommie Harris” argument is not likely to fix our defense – his absense is subtraction from the quality of the D, not “addition by subtraction” as some seem to suggest.

Can't be a coincidence

As soon as he’s not playing, the opposing has a “field day” against the defense. The Bears were rated as the 7th rated defense up until the Cincy game, and allowed their first 100 yd rusher of the season.

I couldnt have said it better myself….yesterday I was on this blog, have heartedly saying im done with the bears. Why?? Because it hurts to be so supportive for such a long time (25 yrs) and to be left with such a disgusting and embarrassing loss.. Im sure many of you who started to ridicule me felt the same way, but I was either ballys enough or stupid enough to say it on here. And by the way, CHI TILL EYE DIE, is the way I am inside, it doesnt just come from supporting an athletic organization from the city of chicago. Of the coaching? Sure, for at least as long as the SB when we were trying to pass with an OL built for running.

Ditka and Butkus

Still show more emotion and devotion to the Bears than Lovie has, is, or will…. I would just like to see something come from Lovie other than that surprised/perplexed look after a play didn’t work, a touchdown, another lost challenge (some of the one’s he’s done in the past still boggle my mind), or a fake punt on a 4th and 8 against the Packers at a crucial point in the game…. For God sakes chew somebody out on the sidelines for not doing their job!! If he grew a pair I’d be fine with him staying put.

by ArmyCubFan on Oct 26, 2009 3:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh.My.God.

Let me make this very clear to all posters:

The fire & passion argument is old, tired, and WRONG. It’s an argument that panders to the football stupid. Lovie Smith showing his emotions has nothing to do with the Bears’ success or failures.

I'M A MAN! I'M 23!

by ChiFan13 on Oct 26, 2009 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Wrong?

Again, opinions are wrong? Many people have this opinion, this site and others, that Lovie’s calm demeanor is a joke for a head coach of historically one of the most intense teams in the league. Sure there are no factual studies done to prove either way is right but people are searching for reasons as to why the players aren’t motivated and have come out flat very often during his term; Lovie is one place people like to point the finger.
If people, myself included, don’t like Lovie’s stone face and mouth sewed shut after a painful ass kicking, or we don’t like his post-game speech that had no heart and took only one sentence of accountability; we can blame him if we want.

by brands735 on Oct 26, 2009 3:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I would want him to go Jim Mora on the players, on the coaches, on the gatorade cooler. I almost threw a chair out the window yesterday and he just patted someone on the back! I would almost rather a Coors Lite commercial

Um

Did you not hear that Lovie got on the defense yesterday during the game?

Look, the fire and passion proves nothing. It doesn’t make a head coach good, it doesn’t make a head coach bad.

by ChiFan13 on Oct 26, 2009 4:16 PM CDT up reply actions

You are WRONG

Fire and passion alone don’t; but there is a time and place for it. Different guys require different sources of motivation. Still don’t know how you can say someone’s opinion is wrong? ArmyCubFan and I aren’t the only ones that think the Statute of Lovie is a downer for the team during the week, during the game, after the game. It seems like he just doesn’t care…and we do care so its frustrating. No one knows for sure if it has any effect on the players besides maybe so therapists, but let us point our fingers if we have an opinion.

by brands735 on Oct 26, 2009 4:18 PM CDT up reply actions

How do you know?

Do you go to practices? Meetings? No. You watch 60 minutes of Lovie. That’s it.

So you base your opinion of Lovie on the 60 minutes of football you see, and not the player’s quotes of how he’s gone off on the guys at halftime?

If you’re that clueless, I can’t help you. Read some of the quotes that I put on the Quotables post from past week and you’ll see what I mean.

I'M A MAN! I'M 23!

None of us

have any idea what is said and what’s not said in the locker room, Halas Hall, nor on the sideline. Just because he’s a “statue” on the sideline doesn’t mean he’s a softy or doesn’t have control of his team.

Chi- I know we agree on this, and I’m tired of the “fire and passion” argument as well. Tell me, how’s ol’ Iron Mike doing? Same as Mora…..he sucked as a coach.

It’s just such an over-used argument….blame the coaches for not having the players ready. Blame the coaches for halftime adjustments. Blame Lovie for his challenges. Don’t blame the coaches because they don’t outwardly show “fire” and “passion.”

update on Tommie from Lovie’s press conference:

Tommie wasn’t injured… the Bears just “gave him the week off to rest.”

Lovie said that “we had better options” this week, but that Harris will be back this week.

Sounds like there is way more going on with Tommie and Lovie right now than meets the eye.

Are the bears so horrible that they dont even deserve 2 minutes on espn???

Im watching espn shows like nfl live, nfl primetime, yada yada yada, and they spend so much time on the viqueens, favray, brady, peyton, even the redskins get altleast 30 seconds of airtime to be dissected and anaylzed, EVERY SINGLE SHOW….But what about the bears???? They show them getting spanked, (or even with a win), and they move on…..NO ANALYSIS, NO FURTHER TALK…I almost feel like they cant stand chicago. Why is that? I mean are they so bad that they cant be further scrutinized? After the loss to the bengals, I was surely thinking they would discuss what went wrong, why the bears have fallen to 3-3, what lovie had to say…BUT IT WAS NONE OF THAT… just show the bad highlights and move right along to the next game and discuss it and break it down for 15 minutes….WTF!!! I am starting to think that the media seriously hates chicago. Atleast the national media, I dont know what the local buzz is, i try to watch WGN as much as possible but sometimes their sports reports are awful….

by No It All on Oct 26, 2009 6:18 PM CDT reply actions

I happen to like the fact that he indeed did bench him, that is what Ive been wanting to see from this coaching staff, accountability.

And if you read into what he said, things like Tommie could have played if I wanted him to, we had better options that gave us a better chance to win, and he did not practice all week. Those are things that tell me that Lovie is FINALLY fed up with Tommies crap, he did bench him last year but for different reasons, I believe it was something about not committing to his rehab or something. But this year I think its more about his production or lack there of.

tommie harris isn't that good this year

he gets single-teamed, and gets beat on those single teams fairly often. i dunno if he’s not working hard, or rehabbing right (which seems to be partly the problem – at least it was last year), or is just physically not right. but whatever it is, harris isn’t a dominant player right now. he’s barely an average player.

by guy incognito on Oct 26, 2009 6:52 PM CDT reply actions

Harris has been ok this year

he’s not taking 2 300 pound men and hauling them along for the ride while he takes out the QB anymore..but he has been average. when he’s in he puts pressure on the QB to rush the throw a bit..but we really need the old Harris back..when he was on form, he carried our D(and the offenses linemen) on his shoulders. If this year hits the crapper any further he should just go out on IR and get that knee looked at again and get it fixed properly this time.
otherwise I can’t agree with the people dumping the bears as their team..yeah it looks like its not going well, but I think if this year keeps rolling this bad, smith and angelo will be finding the door..though I don’t think that will fix this team. our D needs a leader, and without urlacher out there, Harris particularly needs to step up. and our CBs need to watch their matchups a bit more closely..watching Tillman getting burned 5-10 times this past sunday hurt in the pants. a lot.

by Pretender85 on Oct 26, 2009 6:59 PM CDT reply actions

The general consensus among the so-called "experts" is that the knee is unfixable

It is a matter of Harris learning how to play through pain like so many other NFL players. Either that or retire. Hub Arkush states that there is no surgical procedure on the horizon for Harris.

This is getting ugly

For so long I really respected Tommie and his whole persona. He seemed really funny, tough player, always worked hard, etc. First there was his skipping physical therapy stuff last year or in the offseason (i can’t remember when) and now this. I think it is OK for the team to bench a guy if he isn’t producing or practicing and wanting to keep it in house. Fudging the injury report is one thing though and I am not excusing that. However, for the player to go out and whine to the media about it so then the staff HAS to admit it is stupid too. He’s acting childish. He was supposed to get a bunch of help from Marinelli and we have seen none of that when he’s on the field. Harris’ days with the Bears might be numbered. I just hope we don’t regret ditching him if that is what we do.

by Sam Householder on Oct 26, 2009 8:04 PM CDT reply actions

see thats what i dont get

with convo’s like this… i know you are talking abotu Harris, but the same thing applies with Benson… All of us, yes i’m confiedent in saying that, were totally fine with cutting Benson, yet now some are questioning not only Benson, but all the way back to Justin Gage… seriously?

Benson was a baby, injury prone, arrest prone, and unproductive, why not shed the wait, and he’s prospered elsewhere. good for him. were we supposed to hang on to him, and hope he turns it around.

same with Harris, he sucks…end of story, and we over paid him, are we going to extend his contract in the hopes that he performs, just so he doesnt flourish somewhere else…because isn’t that what we just did with Gaines Adams?

Tommie Harris is damaged goods who became de-motivated on day one of signing his new contract

Hub Arkush strongly suggests that Tommie Harris’ knee is irreversibly screwed up and it is a matter of Harris either retiring or finding a way to play with pain like so many other football players wind up doing.

Harris is done being an impact player. He was done being an impact player after the 2007 season. Given how he has become a non-stop soap opera and costs an insane amount of contract dough the best strategy would seemingly be to cut him. There is minimal threat that he comes back to haunt.

Benson was a head-case and a drunk

Not a guy who was chronically playing in pain like Harris. Physically, there was nothing wrong with Benson – his numbers just really sucked in Chicago. But if Harris is a physically screwed up as it appears, he’s not going to succeed somewhere else.

Based Benson’s clownish, off-season behavior, a lot of teams would have probably cut him. Drinking and driving is no joke – look at the Dante Stallworth fiasco. By the way, if I ever get charged with a DUI, I want Benson’s lawyer!

ok

I’m tired of this shit with the Bears and their coaching staff. And Tommie Harris. We’re paying this guy a huge some of $ to be a top tier DT and all he’s been is disappointing with his conduct, injuries and play. Then Lovie and the coaches place him on the injury report as ‘doubtful’ then supposedly he’s not injured… We hear this.. Why didn’t Smith address the media about this? I honestly don;t see what there was to hide. And the way he addressed the media after the game yesterday really surprised with his lack of disappointment and passion. It almost seemed as if he didn;t care…

It is time to sever ties with Tommie Harris

He has contributed virtually nothing since the conclusion of the 2007 season. Regardless whether he is permanently injured with the knee, or his motivation went out the window when he got the new contract, or his turning over his life to God had some profound change on his football outlook….it just does’t matter. He’s a giant distraction, horribly overpaid for the player he has devolved into and simply needs to go. It doesn’t matter if we are a 6-0 or 0-6 football team… the deed needs to be done.

organizational problems.

this story at the very least give some indication that there is something very wrong with this football organization. When one of your “special” players gets benched, while not having an injury there are some problems. When you get destroyed on the field, in all phases of the game to an average team, there are some problems. When your team is getting really old and you have no picks in the first 3 rounds of the next draft, you have some problems. Heck i think i was the one to send a post about how the Bears knew Williams had a back problem before they drafted him. The problem seems to be within the whole organization.

by Bears-Bullsfan on Oct 26, 2009 9:00 PM CDT reply actions

"Destroyed on the field by an average team"

You see, that’s just the thing…us fans are just as much to blame as anybody else in all honesty. Why?!?!? Because we have deluded ourselves into thinking that this was a good football team to begin with and/or that Jay Cutler was the silver bullet solution to everything.

Hard cold truth of the matter is that the better team won in Atlanta and Cincinnati. I’m not offering up excuses for the clusterfuck that happened in Cincy, but merely pointing out the reality that way too many Bear fans simply refuse to admit.

To look at the Bears on paper with objective eye is to realize this is a mediocre football team at best with holes aplenty.

harris has seriously underperformed

we are paying harris elite DT money. he has been a slightly above-average DT since 2007. if he’s not going to return to that level, dump him at the end of the year, and pay someone who actually is a top DT. if harris becomes great again after, who cares? i hope this isn’t the case, and that harris gets back to being the old harris, but my suspicion is his knee (and maybe his apparent unwillingness to rehab it right with us) won’t let him.

by guy incognito on Oct 26, 2009 9:32 PM CDT reply actions

The knee and the drive are gone

I wouldn’t lose sleep in Tommie Harris coming back to haunt. I keep reading more and more things that state the knee will never get any better than it is right now. Apparently, Tommie can’t wrap his peabrain around that concept. Maybe Dick Butkus could give him a little talk about playing through pain.

by BLou on Oct 26, 2009 9:35 PM CDT up reply actions

i'm not sweating it, either

simply because, we’re paying him to be an elite DT. pay someone else who can actually be that. if he’s gone and does well elsewhere, i could care less. in terms of the knee, that’s what i’ve heard as well – it is what it is. the question is, is it a pain thing, or a “i’ve lost my burst” thing? if its the latter, absolutely dump him after the season. if its the former, if he can’t learn to deal with it, dump him in the offseason.

by guy incognito on Oct 26, 2009 11:32 PM CDT up reply actions

I endorse the philosophy that if you don't practice you don't play.

However, with Urlacher gone and down 21 points in the 1st quarter, benching Harris to prove a point was clearly a bad idea.
