Formula For Success: 5 Positions

The Future- I’ve talked about how this is a growing pain season, and after these past couple of weeks it has become even more obvious to the rest of you. Make no mistake, this is a good ballclub. We need changes at 5 positions in order to become legitimate contenders in the search for the Lombardi Trophy.

Star-divide

Crystal_20ball_20bears_medium

Guard—The Guard position on this team is weakest link. We are not allowing Jay Cutler enough time to dissect the teams opposing teams defense, and when given time he does it beautifully. Cutler has been sacked 11 times this season in 6 games and hurried a ton. Cutler’s deep ball was voted #1 in a coaches poll last year, could you imagine the damage he could do if given a few more seconds?

SolutionJahri Evans, one the games best guards, it may be difficult to get him, especially because of the success the Saints are having. He’s young, he studies, and he’s always prepared (I was really impressed in his game against New York). He’s everything that you would want in a guard and he’s the reason why NO is having so much success running.

Free Safety—We need a ballhawk. Currently I’m very happy with Al Afalava at SS, he’s still making rookie mistakes, but once he’s in his comfort zone he’ll he an anchor for years to come (expect more big hits too!) Free Safeties play a huge role in the Tampa 2 (it’s not going anywhere, if it was the owners wouldn’t have signed Rod Marinelli). If we had a safety that had the ability to intercept the ball it would change the face of this defense. Once Afalava progresses more it would allow the FS to play in the "soft" zones of the cover 2, disrupting timing between the QB and WR allowing more opportunities for turnovers

SolutionOJ Atogwe, he’s the most underrated safety in the NFL right now—reason he’s on the Rams. The Rams run a similar system to Lovie’s Cover 2, which would allow Atogwe to be able to step in and contribute right away. Over the past 39 games (2007-current) he’s recorded 207 tackles, 6 forced fumbles, 20 passes defended, and 14 interceptions! He’s 28 and has only been improving. I can’t even imagine what he would do on a semi decent defense. He is also familiar with Pisa Tinisomoa so maybe they would have instant chemistry (if Pisa can stay healthy!) He is the type of player that is a leader on and off the field.

Running Back—The team is relying on Matt Forte right now, Forte isn’t producing. Some people say oh but it’s all the Oline’s fault! Well while the Oline is not helping Matt Forte is running scared, going down after one hit, and not juking guys out in open space like he did last year. It’s not to say that we should give up on Matt Forte, but it’s unfair to him to have him be a solo back, if you look at the best teams in the league they usually have a prominent 2 backs splitting carries, and some have a three headed monster.

Solution—Some people would say we need a short yardage back, I say we can get that in the draft. The real solution lies in getting a back that can break long runs. That’s why I say Jerome Harrison. His stats aren’t that good, but come on he’s on the Browns! Anyone that has seen this guy play knows he’s a playmaker with speed. He's 27, but he has plenty of production since he's been a backup/complementary back his entire career. Jerry Angelo might actually make this move because he’d be on the cheap.

Defensive Tackle—For the past 5 years we have been playing with the philosophy that small speedy athletic Dlineman are better than Buddha type DT’s like Washington and Traylor. I agree that a speedy Dlineman who creates pressure from the middle is better than a DT that merely becomes a wall in the middle. But the problem is that small speedy DT’s are very very very rare and are more prone to injury. Just take a look at Tommie Harris since his injury he is no longer the dominant DT he once was. Once you have small athletic DT’s that are no longer athletic you allow other teams to run up the middle and get an easy 4 yards. I would much rather have 2 Buddhas in the middle that stops the run through the tackles almost every time. If the run is stopped in the middle it allows the linebackers (a strength on this team, barring injuries next year) to make a play on the RB when they bounce to the outside.

Solution—Draft, it’s the only way, the best DT’s will surely be wrapped up by their respective teams, New England is not going to let Vince Wilfork go. Remember to go real big, I want them so big that even if they fall over they’ll block their respective lanes.

Cornerback—this is the position which needs the least work of these 5 (that’s not to say it’s good). If the Dline can create consistent pressure then the secondary as it is now will look amazing. The reason why this is a position of need is that until Zach Bowman shows me he is the future, I’m going to be a little apprehensive. Charles Tillman is a very good corner, but he’s no longer a shutdown corner (and he’s lost half a step). I’d say that this will be another position where it’s tough to find real talent in Free Agency.

Solution—The real solution is to get pressure from the Dline, and secondly to draft guys with a high ceiling, we have enough average CBs we need to roll the dice on some boom or bust type CBs in the draft.

Most of you may have noticed almost all of my solutions were Free Agents (FA). That’s because Jerry Angelo, the teams GM, knows that we have very little time before we enter full rebuilding on defense. It’s like he’s Indiana Jones and he’s trying to slide this team in before the door closes (all while not losing his hat). Veterans are also more likely to contribute quickly and are a proven commodity that will require less coaching. We also no longer have 1st and 2nd round draft picks because of trades for Jay Cutler and Gaines Adams respectively.

One last note, I don’t think that the Wide Receiver position will be a great need in the offseason, but if the Bears do go looking for a WR I would suggest they get Vincent Jackson. Most people say Brandon Marshall, both have their strengths. Brandon Marshall is the toughest WR to tackle 1 on 1 in the league period. Vincent Jackson makes more plays on the ball and is a serious deep threat. If the Broncos keep winning and are willing to pay BM it won’t even matter, but the Chargers have a ton of FA hitting the market this year Darren Sproles, Chris Chambers, Vincent Jackson, Marcus McNeil (T), and Shawne Merriman. After giving Phillip Rivers that huge contract it will be unlikely that they are able to keep all of their FAs.

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

OJ Atogwe

is like a wet dream for the Bears… really nice thought, but eventually you’ll wake up

Lovie still stays in contact with the Rams

Pisa and Pace. I’m sure that Lovie would love to have a beast like Atogwe anchoring the back half of his defense.

Another link that OJ Atogwe has with the bears, he’s dating Mike Singletary’s daugher!

good read. some good options

by Nih1lus on Oct 26, 2009 9:00 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

i struggled with the poll

do i say the bears are lazy but at least kind of aware of what is around them, or do i think the bears have no clue what a football is… its close but i went optimistically and voted that they kinda know, but are lazy..

I love the last sentence on your solution for our DT’s. hilarious but i like the philosophy there.

If the ownership would open the purse this offseason, without a cap, we could really turn our team around. We could take the hit of cutting someone like tommie harris, if no trade value, and still go out and pay for some good FAs. I don’t see them doin it, but it could be nice. I’ll watch the pats show us how good management works and then i’ll cry as we do little to nothing as usual. (not really cry, but as close as a man can come to it)

On a side note, i kinda wish we would have tried to trade Ogun before the falcons game while it looked like he had value…

that's why I had many options

kind of wanted to see if the Bears fans are half full or half empty.

After Cincinnati I’m expecting a lot of half empties

its just depressing

that we’re at the point where it’s either half full or empty in general. Like if it was 3/4 full or 1/4 empty i would be ecstatic.

Always half full. But,

When you have a disaster on your hands it’s hard to decide where to begin. Sure, I really believe the Bears can take a one game at a time approach and shock us all. But there’s still more questions than answers.

by Big Ike on Oct 27, 2009 9:32 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with these...

for the most part. We may argue about the solutions you presented, but in general you and i are on the same page. To add my 2 cents, I think this team needs both a guard and a tackle to get better on the o-line. I believe they can both be drafted, but Angelo does not seem to have an eye for offensive talent. While I like Hester/Knox/Bennett, this team still needs a stud WR. Knox is developing into a fantastic slot receiver and I would guess Hester and Bennett can compliment a true stud WR in 3 and 4 WR sets. This will have to be a FA pick-up that costs some serious cash. Lasly, a big, angry 3rd down back to pick up garbage time yards and key short yardage plays; hopefully someone who can catch, but not as a primary necessity.

On D, wow this would be tough. Many positions to fill. First and foremost is a 3-4 sized NT to play the 3-technique position; I do not advocate the 3-4 scheme, just the prototype for the player. Can’t begin to imagine the FA cash for that guy, so guessing the biggest DT in the draft will have to do. Maybe at 1a, is a FS who isn’t an idiot! This could be a flagging CB like Tillman or Graham if the Bears can get a few decent cover CBs, but that’s getting ahead of myself. This has got to be the best athlete who is too slow to be a CB, too smart to be a TE, and not fast enough to be a WR. Next, two true cover corners, I mean corners who can actually cover the receivers and are given the go ahead to do so. Again, tough to find and the Bears need 2 of them; maybe a draft and FA pickup? As an aside, I wonder if that’s why Bowman isn’t playing as well. Is this stupid “Cover-who” defense of zones playing against his talents? Lastly, a stud DE who only rushes the passer from the left side and move Brown over to the right side. Could this be G Adams, let’s hope so! I really hope the defense can scrap the base Tampa-2, but that’s a pipe dream that will involve a necessary, but unlikely coaching change.

To sum up, that’s somewhere between 6-9 new players to add to this team beyond keeping many of the adequate, but not great current players. That’s a tall order for coaches and management who have yet to get to 50% success out of any off-season. Bottom line, both lines have got to get better talent because no amount of coaching can make up for lack of size and talent.

There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots.

by LostInSTL on Oct 26, 2009 10:04 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I definitely think that

a tackle would add to this line, but I wouldn’t say it’s a top 5 need. I was impressed with Pace’s handling of John Abraham, his false start hurt, but that’s more of an anomaly than the norm. Chris Williams has been doing pretty good too, not so much on the run, but we knew that when we drafted him.

I’d love a 3rd down type back, someone we could put in and know that we’re getting 2-3 yards even if they get hit in the backfield. It’d really increase our red zone % and third down conversions. Heck anything right now would help our run game.

I think our corners, if allowed to jam at the line, and play cover, would be much better, right now it seems like the scheme the coaches are having them play is zone then pass off to safety, which just makes it to easy for soft zones.

Hopefully Gaines Adams is a beast, and Rod Marinelli takes some spitshine to spruce him up.

I think we both agree it starts and sometimes ends with the lines. Right now our lines are playing below average which makes it hard to execute on defense and offense.

williams is our future LT

he’s playing out of position at RT, and it shows, though he’s not doing that bad. his skills translate to a LT. pace will hopefully last this year (he hasn’t been that bad), but i dunno about next year. omiyale, much maligned, is a tackle playing guard. this has seriously hurt his play. he very well might be a good starting RT, though. the real problem for the o-line, i think, is guard play. beekman will replace kreutz sometime in the next season or two, but garza’s not getting any younger, and omiyale, as mentioned, is not a guard. fortunately, you can draft starting guards in the 3rd and 4th round.

by guy incognito on Oct 26, 2009 11:58 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think that Williams is better suited for LT

I think he’ll definitely get stronger, the Bears are really good at strength and conditioning.

As for RT I think that Omiyale would do better there than LG (don’t know if it’s a solution), and RTs can be had in FA a lot easier than LTs.

Pace may not even finish his contract out here

while any DE will benefit from DTs getting double teamed

I’d use another example than Mark Anderson, his problem was that the year he got his 12 sacks he used a spin move, the league caught on (along with no longer having a prominent DT) and he’s been nonexistent until this year (he’s looking better now).

Wide Receiver

The last paragraph mentions the number of FAs that the Chargers has and focuses on Vincent Jackson. I would think that Jackson may be the least available receiver from that group. Jackson is 5 years younger than Chambers and Sproles would not serve as a front line receiver although his other skills are significant. I cannot see the Chargers letting Jackson go after making sure Rivers is staying. Marshall may be attractive … but it appears a healing has taken place in Denver … whether real or not is still open for debate. Besides not having time to throw Cutler really still does not have targets like he needs. Wide receiver is a need.

by Hank44 on Oct 27, 2009 7:01 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I was merely pointing out that SD

has a ton of Free Agents, they aren’t going to be able to pay top dollar to all of them. I don’t think they let Sproles go, Rivers has already signed a contract, and I didn’t even mention all of the huge defensive FAs they have in 2011.

I think it’s a possibility to get Vincent Jackson if Bears GM is willing to spend the $$$

SD is a smaller market, the Chicago Bears have the 2nd largest market in the NFL. Players sometimes are willing to take less money in contracts because they know that their Jersey sales and other opportunities from playing in a larger market will more than make up for it.

VJ would get tagged

at least that seems to be the NFL consensus (i watch a lot of games…lots of commentary) Merriman will be jettisoned because the franchise has grown tired of him.

by Puppet on Oct 27, 2009 7:05 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

A bit flawed in places

First off, the Chargers are not going to let VJ go, no matter what the circumstances are. He’ll be franchised if a deal can’t be worked out. I don’t believe any of those other Chargers are very high on AJ’s priority list. Secondily, Angelo won’t automatically change his philosophy on what defensive tackles should look like in Lovie’s scheme. If Lovie is fired, which I highly doubt, maybe the Bears can get lucky and draft a mammoth DT in the 3rd round. That’s a big “if” though. Thirdly, RB is the least of the Bears concern cause it’s impossible to run with an open sieve of a line. Forte is fine and will excel once G and RT are stabilized (Kreutz is replaced by Beekman as well).

With that said, I really like the Jahri Evans and Otagwe ideas. Although, I think the Rams can tag the latter again next year, and the Saints would be reluctant to allow an intrical piece of their line go. Stranger things have happened though!

I like the post.

My areas of concern are similar.

C, OG, OT, DT and CB (no particular order).

It’s possible Lance Louis and Josh Beekman can fill two of those black holes, but that remains to be seen.

I’m satisfied with Manning at FS… I’m with propheteer on RB, though I do like Jerome Harrison as a player.

Other than Kreutz, I have little doubt these positions will be addressed in the off-season or sooner… The issue is, will the Bears get it right?

by rdent4hof on Oct 27, 2009 10:43 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't think Beekman would be an excellent LG

but he did a fine enough job last year.

I don’t know anything about Lance Louis other than that he punched a teammate, but that puts him in my good graces because one of the best lineman we’ve had in a longtime broke his teammate’s jaw!

I think Beekman would be better at C than LG. I think we could probably find someone on our team to play RT next year after moving Williams to LT or FA.

An uncapped 2010 season

I like your strategy about shoring up the roster. If 2010 ends up being uncapped, then all of these players would be restricted free agents in 2010. If the year goes uncapped, then only players with six or more years would qualify as unrestricted FAs. Teams will also have one additional option for ‘Franchise Player’ designation. The top eight teams in the league also will have restrictions on how many new players they can sign. Seeing how the Bears have traded all of their top draft picks, they will be limited in going after any restricted FAs.
