This has to be the year....
that people consider Lovie on the "hot seat". I'm not one to blame coaching, but there's no way any one can explain to me how its possible to be so under prepared after your bye week, and then repeat mistakes the very next week. Thats inexcusable and the bears 19-19 stailmate record since super bowl 41, is unimpressive at best. At some point (if the Bears fail to make the playoffs) the coaching staff has to be held accountable.

Yeah
but it’s hard to be on the hot seat when you do just enough. The Bears have to really tank and go 4-12 , 5-11, or 6-10 for Lovie and Co. to be on the hot seat. Nobody wants to see that, especially this year because that means a very high draft pick going to Denver.

yes & no continued
Most of the BIG Names (ie Shannahan, Gruden, Cowher, and Holmgren) were all available at end of last season. So in my opinion, there is no greater urgency than at the end of last season to sign a big name coach. In fact there is some talk that Jeff Fischer might be looking for work at the end of the season. So there will be even more top caliber coaches available, so why the urgency?
I personally feel that we need a new OC and a revamped OL. I would love to see outside the box thinker for OC (a Mike Martz type…but not Martz, he’s an ass).
I also think the Pace experiment has run its course and he needs to be benched or switched over to the other tackle position and let williams play his natural position.

I totally agree
but would like to take it a step further. I think we should move pace to LG switch williams to LT and move shaffer into the RT spot. I think playing against larger nose tackles would help pace out because he can’t get low enough against DE to get leverage.
On the coaching thing, the problem we will have with any aforementioned “big name” head coaches Angelo would also have to go. Most of them will want full personnel control.
Does anyone have any ideas for an OC?
by Jhitt81 on Oct 27, 2009 1:26 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Pace isn’t cutting it in the running game. From what I’ve read here over the past few months, a RT is more of a mauling run-blocker than the LT position, and the OGs need to be good at run-blocking. His sheer size may overcome advancing years if he slides inside to Guard? Otherwise, it seems like we’d be asking him to play in a position where he’s focused even more on run-blocking, which is no longer his strength.

"His sheer size may overcome advancing years if he slides inside to Guard? "
That is what i was thinking. He is still stronge so maybe he won’t have to get as low against NT to get good leverage against them. Blocking is all about leverage.

Two options:
1) Go for broke and bring in two of those guys, one defensive guy(Cowher) and one offensive guy(Shanahan of Holmgren), one as a coordinator and one as a HC. There’s a 99 percent chance that won’t happen, as Lovie has money left on his deal AND both those guys would cost a big chunk of change, but hey, a guy can dream.
2) Bring in an offensive HC,(again, either Shanahan or Holmgren), and try to lure Ron Rivera or Mike Singletary back as the DC. I’ve heard Mike has an out in his deal if the Bears come calling, so maybe he’d be willing to take a step down to come back to the orange and blue.
At this point, it’s almost ABL, Anybody But Lovie.

There is no way Singletary
would leave a HC job to become a DC.

If the team has a winning record
but fails to make the playoffs, Smith probably (and regretably IMO) stays. If the team has a losing record I think he has little chance of returning.

If I were in charge, this weeks game would be a must win. Having a team unprepared in inexcusible.

Having a team unprepared
for a week is one story, but to have them unprepared for three consecutive weeks (bye, Atlanta and Cincy games) is inexcusable.

Detroit. We came out and let them slap our D around during the first half.

Sure
but at least the coaching staff made adjustments, and the team went on to route them when it mattered most

still
I’m getting sick of watching the Bears stink up the joint in the first half, before making a decent effort in the second half.

Hopefully Sunday we'll first half production.
I’m hoping to see two or three long, time-consuming drives in the first half… maybe dominate TOP by a good 7 or 8 minutes.

He's got to go.
Lovie’s time in Chicago is over. I think a good candidate to take over is Kyle Shanahan (the Texans OC). He’s turned that offense into a power house.

If you are going to go with DC's
Why not go with the Bob Ryan, I think is is DC/AHC in Cleavland with Mangenious…

DC for eagles
It is still Jim Johnson’s defense. He was a great coordinator and McDermot is doing what JJ would have done. I don’t know if he would have success trying to develop something on his own.

The reason i was suggesting him
was because he knows JJ’s def.
i don’t really like ryan. I didn’t like him for the raiders and i don’t like him at cleveland.

HC
I think the next head coach needs to be an offensive mind…like Kyle Shanahan or Brian Schottenheimer. I would prefer Shanahan considering what he’s done with the Texans offense since he’s been there.

I second that.
I could go for that as well. Since the McCaskey’s are so worried about money why don’t they sell the team. The have to realize that if the team keeps losing, the team’s value keeps decreasing.

How does the value of the team decrease if they lose ?
They share massive revenues with the other owners. They operate in the second biggest market in the NFL. All the McCaskeys have to do to make money is put out piss poor teams. The less they put into the Bears the more profit they make …

I'm not one to blame coaching, you write
Why not? In the NFL, it all starts with the coaching.
That comment, to me, makes no sense.
by GeoMak on Oct 27, 2009 11:40 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
because lovie doesn't suit up
so I believe coaches shoulder more blame than they should, but its obvious lovie really isn’t getting through to his players anymore
by jimribs on Oct 29, 2009 9:49 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Again, you make no sense
Bill Belichick doesn’t suit up either
He won his first SB when a sixth round, unknown draft pick (Tom Brady) replaced a former #1 pick (Drew Bledsoe).
The biggest difference in the NFL is in the coaching. It all goes back to Vince Lombardi. He took over the biggest joke in the NFL, the GB Packers, a turned them into a dynasty.
Basically, the very same players.
It’s the coaching.

To all "Fire Lovie" homers ....
The Bears can’t afford to eat $11 million of a contract. Lovie Smith is here for the next two years, after this year. He’s not going anywhere. The McCaskeys don’t eat contract. To fork out $11 million to get rid of Lovie AND pay for a new big bucks coach … that’s not in their nature.
To all Cover-2 homers …..
It’s a formation !! That’s all. Change the formation and you still have Hunter Hillenmeyer and Nick Roach and Zack Bowman and Tommie Harris taking up space. There’s nothing wrong with the formation. It’s not like the defense are in Cover-2 on every play, do you guys watch football ?
by Irish Bears Fan on Oct 28, 2009 3:12 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Just because it isn't likely...
doesn’t mean we can’t hope/demand for it to happen. If the Bears organization doesn’t hear how pissed off we are, then why should they change at all? IMO, it’s no different than hoping Jeff Reed misses 2 FGs and the Bears beat the SB champion Steelers. Or, perhaps, that a mediocre Bears team could win 10-12 games and make the playoffs. Or that any of the obvious problems with this team’s performance could be addressed before next season. If there is truly no changing of the status quo, then why watch football at all?
There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots.
