JA wasn't happy with the lack of adjustments

Here's what Jerry Angelo said in a one on one with Larry "The Team Player" Mayer.  I found it quite interesting and a little refreshing.  http://www.chicagobears.com/news/NewsStory.asp?story_id=6246

How do you explain what happened to the Bears in Cincinnati?

I don’t want to take anything away from the Bengals because they are a very good offensive football team with a great receiver, a great quarterback and a running back who’s having a Pro Bowl year. But what really surprised me was that we weren’t able to make the needed adjustments in terms of slowing them down or stopping them. We let that go really throughout four quarters. We couldn’t slow them down and make some stops or even force them to settle for a field goal instead of a touchdown to keep us in the game where we could have some hope. That surprised me. I didn’t expect to see that.

Star-divide

Jerry goes on to talk about team effort and whether a loss like this (Bengals 45-10) should cause him to re-evaluate what he thought of this team.

I'm just glad to see some accountability being put out there.  I think (in JA's way) he's calling out Lovie.  Maybe Lovie isn't as safe as we thought?

One can only hope accountability...

would lead to the obvious consequence that if you are paid like the best, you should perform like the best. Sadly, in the real world as is true in football, the “leaders” get paid irregardless of how well they lead their team.

There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots.

What team is he watching?

The Bengals.

Cedric Benson is at the top of the league in rushing yardage. Probably does deserve pro bowl consideration.

If you can't laugh at yourself you must not be very funny.

Sorry

I fail at reading comprehension. I thought he was talking about the Bears.

Interesting..................

Because all I heard out of Lovie’s mouth is…………..it’s just 1 game, uh we have 10 more games on the schedule, uh 1 game does not mean a whole season, uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I don’t think Lovie get’s it. A Team throttled you for 4 quarters and made you look clueless. You had no answers to stop the bleeding. As the Head Coach you made a professional sports franchise look anemic and weak. I’m glad Jerry Angelo gets it. I think the majority of fans do as well.

I appreciate seeing JA speak honestly

but honestly, what else could he say? Even he can only pretend everything is alright to a certain point. So far this season the Bears coaches and players seemed to be doing a fair job of adjusting to opponents (adjusted play calling, different packages, Tillman playing straight man coverage) that the failure to make any headway in slowing a team like Cincy was shocking. The Bears failed to limit both the passing and rushing of the offense, which is inexcusable. I can handle shutting down the run and getting beat man to man. I can even understand not getting pressure rushing four. However to completely and utterly be beaten in all phases of the game (let’s not start on our offfense) is unbelievable.

What Do I Expect Him To Say?

I expect him to say my Team played a horrible game and we are going to re-evaluate the starters on the defensive side of the ball. I expect him to say the performance on the field was unacceptable. I expect him to say that they are going to increase practice time to try and get individual players up to par with coaching. If that were possible with this coaching staff.

by Gesiakob on Oct 29, 2009 12:30 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Even Parcell's doesn't say things like that

Yes, it would be great to hear him say something to that effect. I would hope he has said so privately to his HC and the rest of the staff. But let’s be honest, JA is known for smiling wide as everything goes to hell. IMHO this was a significant statement for him.

The Bears are 3-3.

And yet, this season has all the makings of a complete nightmare.

It’s alright to lose in the NFL, especially on the road. It’s not alright to look as pathetic as they just did in Cincinnati.
They lost 45-10. That score is misleading. It wasn’t even that close.

Beyond that, two recent castoffs (Benson & Orton) are now looking like Jim Brown and Joe Montana.

The Bears are completely underachieving. Two of their ex-players are completely overachieving in a new environment.

Not good.

Do we need to look at some personnel? Yeah, we do. There’s some of that going on as you’ll see Sunday.

I wonder what that means…

If Beekman is the answer to any question we have

then we are in trouble. Beekman is undersized and showed last year that he couldn’t match-up against quality DLinemen.

Did y’all notice Omiyale against Cincy? Looked better than the previous week…

Good response

Beekman is not a magic bullet by any means, but I would like to see him start at C in place of Kreutz. As I said in another thread, Omiyale has the potential to improve, Kreutz is done.

I don't remember that...

Either way, a team is not going to base each week’s starters on how they looked months earlier in camp.

I’d like to think that if Beekman were better at LG than Omiyale, he would be starting in front of Omiyale.

And I don’t buy this whole conspiracy theory about Omiyale being an experiment, or that he is only starting because of the salary we paid him before Pace signed. They put him in a starting position because they felt he was better than the other guy.

Will that change? Maybe. But only if they think at this point Beekman gives us a better chance to win.

Dickerson

is the one that was vehemently against Omiyale starting. Usually, the players who stand-out in training camp are the players who go on and start. He mentioned Frank’s technique was horrible at guard, while Beekman being a bit smaller (5 lbs.), was the better of the two at run blocking than Omiyale.

Well, we haven't seen Beekman yet this year

so who knows who would be better… The Bears liked Omiyale, and they started him. Maybe we’ll see Beekman, who knows.

But I’ll circle back around to my original comment for this. While our LG situation is not pretty, it could be a lot worse.

Our LG had very little, if anything, to do with the 45-10 shellacking that Cincy gave us.

During our 3 game winning streak, our defense was quietly giving up more and more passing yards than the week before.

GB: 184 yds
Pitt: 221
Sea: 261
Det: 350

Since then, in our two losses, we’ve given up 7 TD passes. I’m not worried about our LG… I’m worried about:
Anderson/ Massoquoi;
Warner/ Boldin/ Fitz;
McNabb/ Jackson/ Maclin;
Favre/ Rice/ Berrian
etc…

the stats that should worry

Sea: 261
Det: 350

Seattle had a backup QB, not to mention the RB tore us up as well…and 350 from Detroit is unacceptable

what worries is the inability to tackle or a lot of those yards wouldn’t be there

Two wrongs don't make a right

I don’t think anything happening right now on defense has to do with the Bears offense. I don’t believe the team, nor its fans can take anything good away from the Cincy game, so talking about how he did OK is pointless. From everything I’ve read, seen, and heard about Omiyale just isn’t good, let alone average. He can barely stay in his stance without falling over. That’s how bad his balance, technique, and mental capacity are right now. Does that mean he can’t contribute later in the season or next year? No. I believe it was Sackman who put up those FO #s on our offensive line, and with the exception of one play, Frank has been nothing short of a nightmare.

take away the broken play to Roddy White and they would have had only 135 passing yards. The bigger worry is 2 straight games without any pressure..

Just my thoughts the past week

and whatever i saw on CB.com about moving HH back into the middle from Layer Mayer.

I think he understands the defense better than Roach, and would be able to call it better. i know roach is faster and more athletic.

it’s just a change i see coming

the plays from the SLB position and let Roach stay in the middle. I like having Roach and Briggs next to each other.

The middle of the field

is probably the reason why HH is going back to MLB. Roach can’t cover the deep-middle like HH has shown in the past.

Well

athleticism doesn’t mean squat if you don’t know where to be on the field….see Roach. If my memory serves me right, HH belongs in the middle cause on the strong-side he’d be even more of a liablity trying to cover a TE.

But the guy couln't make a tackle near

the line of scrimmage if his life depended on it. I would rather at least get that and let him learn the coverages on the job vs. HH who can’t cover or tackle (excpet for 5-6 yards down field).

He hasn't been great

but the Bears defense hasn’t exactly been very “prepared” under Roach. Plus, I just don’t trust HH one on one with an athletic, quick TE. He was exposed last season as the SAM, and is more apt to be playing zone in the middle IMO.

The thing that gets me is why we had to trade our 2nd round pick this year away.

We still had a one third round pick I believe after the Cutler trade…Pick #99 that we got Iglesias with. If we woul have kept the 2nd round pick we could have grabbed an OL like Loadholt who has been playing very well for MN.

We still probably could have gotten either Gilbert or Iglesias with #99 just not both. I think we would have been much better off with Loadholt and either of our current 3rd round picks.

Our line would be vastly better with Loadholt, Garza, Kreutz, Omiyale, Williams, with Schaefer and Beekman subbing in, IMO.

I wanted to see them take an O-lineman in the second round, too

But I guess JA and company didn’t really feel a sense of urgency about the O-line. And yes, I think they put a little too much faith into the free agent aquisitions that they made. But I think we can now clearly see that they were obviously just replacing mediocrity with more mediocrity and not really improving the ballclub for the long term.

Brian Billick and Mike Mayock did a nice job of breaking down what the Bears couldn’t do against Cincy. Seems like basic fundamentals.
With that said, Pace is done. He’s too slow and can’t move around like he use to. Move Williams to LT and put Shaffer at RT.

by Virto on Oct 28, 2009 5:57 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That was a good analysis

Basically, it pretty much shows that the Bears got absolutely destroyed in the trenches, especially on the offensive line. When you’ve got your left tackle getting blown up and knocked back into the running back when he’s still in the backfield, you know you’re in big trouble.

On defense, it just looked like they weren’t able to always protect the gaps to cut off the lanes for Benson to run into. I’d definately have to put some blame on the coaches for that…

To his credit, Benson looks much quicker and faster than he ever did when he was in Chicago.

Make a few changes right before a game with a patsy.

If we do well in this game (which we should even if NO MOVES were made) everyone can pat themselves on the back and say “Look how great the changes we made worked out.” The team feels more confidence (even if it might be false confidence) and Lovie puts on his “Emperor’s new clothes” and leads us on against Arizona. Maybe the placebo’s work. Who knows?
