Bears Double Up the Lions, Move to 3-1
The Detroit Lions came to Chicago looking for their first win streak in over a year and they made a run at it in the first half. Then the 3rd quarter rolled around and the fact that the Bears are a better team game crashing down them in a big way. The offense and defense played well enough to win, but the Special Teams won this game. They manned up in a big way. Maynard pinned them at the 4 and 2 yard lines in consecutive series. Johnny Knox and Earl Bennett both had good returning game. Know ran a kick off back 102 yards for a TD.
Jay Cutler had his most pedestrian outing throwing for 141 and 2 TDs, but it was all they needed from him.
The run game had some success though most of it game on two plays, a 61 yard burst to give the Bears their first TD and a 37 yard TD run late in the 4th for 98 total yards. He ended with 121 yards.
The defense started out playing poorly, but manned up in the 2nd half,. holding the Lions to a few 3 and outs as well as a couple of sacks and takeaways. The Bears ended with 5 sacks and an Int.
Hopefully, with the bye week Bennett and Hester will be ready and we can see the return of Hunter and Pisa.
Unfortunately, now we need to root for Green Bay to bring the Vikings back to the crowd.

I will never root for the packers..
i dont care if it helps us or not.. i hate the packers.. i hate the packers.. they are evil incarnate, and i will not root for evil.. ever ever.. the packer are evil and i hate them.. they suck..
but in this case...
the Vikings could be argued as being more evil. And since the Packers winning gets us to 1st, I will say that while shouldn’t root for the Pack, you should prefer them winning over the Vikings.
In all honesty, I would prefer neither team win.
i've always felt like
the vikes are hated rivals while the packers are just plain evil.. and the pack winning wouldnt get us first it would put the fudgepack 1st then us then the vikes..

Don't put it that way
Just root for the outcome that puts the Bears in a better position to win the division
Football’s equivalent of jazz music
Yes, but I agree that "hoping the Packers win" does sound a little dirty
Football’s equivalent of jazz music
I can't do it.
the Packers suck. period. I hate em. and I wont root for them.

Look at it this way, then...
…you get to watch Packers past and present having to play each other on MNF.
really?
so if the packers have to win in the final week of the season so the bears can make the playoffs you would still root against them? congrats on a being a meatball.
i cant tell you how i would feel there
cause we arent in that situation right now.. but i know that i may die from a brain embolism from confusion.. but that is NOT the situation we are in right now.. its week 4. a vikes win puts us squarely in second place, ahead of the pack, and and 1 game behind the queens with 12 more games to play. thats a good situation.
with queens over pack standings are w/ division games in ()
Queens 4-0 (2-0)
Bears 3-1 (1-1)
FudgePack 2-2 (1-1)
lions 1-3 (0-2)
if that is what happens if the queens win how is this a situation where we want gb to win? i dont see it. and why am i being called a meathead for hating the packers on a bears site?
by GtM on Oct 4, 2009 4:50 PM CDT up reply actions
youre being call a meathead
cus you are rooting for a situation that doesn’t put the bears into first place. it shouldn’t matter what week it is.
if the packers win or lose
we are not in first place.. either way.. no first place.. ill say it again.. pack wins pack is in 1st we are in tied for second if pack loses we are 2nd with the pack in 3rd.. how does this not make sense?

What the hell happened to DA?
Is he hurt or are they just not dressing him?
I've got this thing and it's fucking golden!
He's not much of a ST player
So they don’t dress him. Rashied gets the nod over him.
Lovie's been great at second half adjustments this year
Calvin Johnson was a non-factor in the second half.
Agreed
But does anyone know why it took until halftime to put Tilman on Johnson? He was abusing Bowman all game and I thought Peanut would match up better from the start. That being said, that guy is a heckofa receiver and I don’t think many corners can single cover him.

Really glad we'll have the bye week
to get healthy – Pisa and the recieving corps need it. As loathsome as bye-weeks are…good timing!

Yep
I was thinking the same thing. I thought a 5th week bye was stupid, but with Hester and Knox hurting, I’m glad we’ve got it.
lol when Cutler did his version of the helicopter in the end zone all I could do was scream DON’T GET HURT DON’T GET HURT AHHHHHHH!
He's going to buy a ranch in the Illinois flatlands and name it the Flying J
May the wind be always at your back, and may your placekicker have icewater in his veins.
who knew a bye this early would be a good thing
but with all the injuries it’s a blessing in disguise
Picture of Cutler is my computer wallpaper. Great Game!
I was scared sh*tless at the end of half, but the bears took control of the game. 2 weeks till next game.
Lance Briggs for defensive player of the week.
try to argue against me.
Has John Paxson traded for or signed D-Wade yet?
FU Ron Turner
Not a single misdirection play, trap play, draw play, reverse, end around. And not a single bomb against a weak ass secondary. Make the damn call.
What more did you want from him today?
He didn’t have to be creative today. They had wonderful FP all day.

No, he's right.
The game wasn’t called that well. The Lions lost because their defense is atrocious, not because they were outcoached. Forte was finally feeling it, so do we keep giving him carries to get his confidence up? Nope, ten carries for the entire game. I’m glad he got 120+ yards, and I’m glad we got the win, but nothing would make me happier than seeing turner canned after this season. Well, if the Yankees team plane had run out of gas over the Metrodome last night, that might have made me happier. But it didn’t.

I am not a huge Ron Turner fan either. But
I have to applaud the Bears and RT. Jay C. said that Ron gives him 3-5 plays that he can run and he picks which one. Remember the flap when Greasy said that he called plays during a great game winning drive? they seem to give Jay C. considerable latitude and value his input. DA vs Redux
Matt Forte can run the ball. So can Wolffe. Establish the pass to set up the run.
Fun game to watch
Cutler diving for the TD, bunch of Sacks, Knox’s kickoff return, Safford going down.
Cutler is doing what he has to for the team to win the games now. The trade looks like it was worth it now.
Stop blaming or giving credit to asst. coaches for everything
I wonder if other cities get so up in asst. coach’s backsides as much as we do – it’s ridiculous to give them so much credit or blame when outcomes are still determined by the players, period. And if RT sucks so bad, whom do you think would do such an awesome job up there in the booth? Mike Martz? He’s currently doing analysis for the NFL network – ’nuff said.
what a silly comment
coaching matters more in football than all the other sports combined. I wouldn’t criticize Ron Turner for this game. The offense did what was necessary. But to argue that people should not question the assistant coaches when they have such a huge effect on the game is asinine.
And for your information I lived in a few other cities besides Chicago – how much do people talk about assistant coaches? All the time!

Just got back from the game
Good win, hand it to special teams and a nice halftime adjsutment by Lovie on D. Our offense was inconsistent today so that was a little bit of a concern. I thought our lb were great against the run today but Roach was constantly late on covering the pass in the middle. Gotta clean that up.Rookie QB shouldnt be throwing 24-36 on us.
Typo
Unfortunately, now we need to root for Green Bay to bring the Vikings back to the crowd.

If you want to crown em...

I don’t know, I’ve never heard that phrase, it’s really bothering me even though it shouldn’t!
I’m more worried about the injuries, a bye this early is a blessing I guess
If you want to crown em...
Off topic...
I don’t wish Kyle Orton anything but success but I hate the fact that McDaniels is being validated for that trade. Orton has to be the luckiest QB I’ve ever seen. He just throws up an underthrown ball and B. Marshall does the rest and gets in the endzone and these guys are 4-0. Wow
off target on a bunch of throws
cowboys shot themselves in the foot. fumbled inside their own 10, wr ran in instead of out and bailey got a pick on the 2, and then the end of the game. Romo was off all day..
Orton has been...
well, Orton. Not spectacular, but not terrible either. They still would have been better off if they had not made the trade, imo. All the credit goes to the job McDaniels has done with that defense. They were terrible last year, but now they’re leading the league in pts allowed, and by a lot at that. 26 pts? They’re schedule has been easy, but still.

I feel the same way.
The Offense hasn’t been as explosive as it was under Cutler, but the Defense not allowing 30 points a game makes it so much easier for them to win games.
Wolfe
Wolfe did pretty nicely you have to admit. Found the holes and sometimes made something out of nothing.

As far as the standings are concerned...
…let’s review what will happen after the monday night game.
Vikings win: The Bears would take second place undisputed in the division. The Packers would be in third place at 2-2 even though one of their wins was over the Bears.
Packers win: This scenario creates a three-way tie for the best record in the division. If we look into the NFL rule book, the first tiebreaker is the head-to-head record amongst the clubs in question. The Packers, having beaten the Vikings and Bears head-to-head, would take first place. The Bears and Vikings, both with a Lion win and Packer loss, would have to resort to the next tiebreaker, winning record within the division. Again, a tie. The third tiebreaker is common games. Again, a tie (Due to the Lion win and Packer loss). The fourth tiebreaker would be the best record in NFC games. Again, this is a tie (Minnesota would be 2-1 with the 49er, Lion, and Packer games, and Chicago would be 2-1 with the Seahawk, Lion, and Packer games) The fifth tiebreaker would be strength of victory (I’ll assume margin of victory.) Under this scenario, Chicago breaks the tie regardless of the margin of victory of the previous games or the total margins of victory combined (The Detroit win gives us 3 wins by a total of 33 points, while Minnesota’s 3 wins would be by only 31.)
Tie: Minnesota leads the division with a 3-0-1 record, Chicago is second at 3-1, and Green Bay is third with 2-1-1.
So, unless I’m missing something, Chicago will be in second place in the NFC North regardless of what happens in the game. Interpret this conclusion as you see fit.

nice post
I didn’t know the actualy tiebreakers ruloes past the wins in division which is what, number 4? Either way, i hate the Pack..more than a lot of ya’ll because i am a bit older and have had more time to fester over the early 80’s and mid 80’s games with Don Makowski, but still..i want the pack to win this game lol.

Why would any Bear fan want the Packers to win tomorrow?
1) The Vikings are not as good as the Packers
2) The Packers have already beaten the Bears once.
3) Who cares where we are in the standings RIGHT NOW..4 games in…means nothing…
We need to get ahead of the Pack and let the Vikings lose some games as season goes on…..
i agree
the vikings always wear out as the season goes. They have a big physical back and an old aging quarterback – those guys will not be as explosive in week 13-16 as they are now. Let the Vikes win, get an edge on the Pack and just wait for the Vikings to come back to earth.

You mean like last year,
when they won 5 of their last 6, including a beat down of Arizona and NY? And how Peterson finished with four out of five 100 yard games? If you think Minn. is a better team but will end up worse because of wear and tear, then think again. Minn is a better team than GB. The Pack can’t protect their QB, at all, and that will cost them a division crown.
Metal sharpens metal.
And this guy right here understands and knows what leadership is all about: The coach, the hall of famer......... Dick Butka! George Ryan
i was thinking
06 when they lost their last 3 or 07 when the lost their last two. Or last year when Favre broke down as the season went along. But way to jump down my throat guy. really self-assured.

I didn't understand what you were getting at.
06 the team was completely different. Diff receiver, diff RB, different QB. Same goes for 07. Didn’t mean to come off so strong.

I can't root for the Pack
I lived in Madison for 3 years – can’t do it. Too many arguments with drunken Pack fans, too many homages to the Great Brett Favre, who has been now replaced with the Great Aaron Rodgers. Packer fans are among the most delusional in the NFL – and I know way too many – can’t give them bragging rights :)

Absolutely
Hell after next week (St. Louis)…the Vikes will lose three in a row… They play Ravens, At Steelers, At Packers….3 Losses right there.
Green Bay will go 4-0 after tomorrow…Detroit, At Browns, Vikings, At Bucs….
Cheer for the VIkes…if they don’t beat the Pack it is quite likely the Packers will be 8-0 going into both the Dallas and Niners games at home which they will be favored…
thank you
the vikes have wins over Cleveland and Detroit and people are acting as if they are some type of juggernaut. Their schedule gets a lot tougher from here on out. Plus Green Bay has already beat the Bears while the Bears still get two cracks at the Vikings in the final 6 weeks. A Green Bay win will make them 2-0 in the division with a home game against the Vikings, a road game against the Bears and 2 W’s with the Lions. A win and they have an excellent shot at 4-2 or 5-1 in the division.
by Basketball Smurf on Oct 4, 2009 10:59 PM CDT up reply actions
Good point, but still
The more Minny goes on undefeated the higher their morale is gonna be until they lose. A Home loss against Brett’s old team and hopefully a few bumps and bruises is just what the doctor ordered in my opinion. They did beat a pretty good San Fran team, albeit a miracle Super Redneck drive but still. Minny should scare you more than the Packers.
