A Moment With Ifuwanna: When Bears Attack

The first quarter of the Bears NFL is in the books, ladies and gentlemen. And boy, what a start these Bears have had in 2009. They always say that the first four games of the season determine what to expect from your team. Well, if that's true, then we as Bears fans should expect one of the most interesting season in a long time.

Pro Football Talk (yes, I do like Mike Florio) has the Bears ranked at #7 and pins this rankings jump thanks to Jay Cutler. It's no fluke. In these three victories, Jay Cutler has done more than anybody expected him to do. He's not helping the Bears win games, HE IS winning games. He has picked up the slack of a pedestrian running game, lack of accomplished veteran receivers, and an o-line that just doesn't get it. But let's press on after the jump.

Star-divide

ESPN Pisses Me Off

Last night, I grabbed a four pack of Natty Ice, two cans of Tilt, that white cheddar popcorn in the black bag (you all know which one's I'm talking about) and some Sunny D to go with my vodka. I was gonna have a good time watching MNF against the Packers-Vikings.  Needless to say, I went to sleep with nine minutes left in the first half.

The Network just destroyed this game before it even started. I was so disgusted with the Brett Favre lovefest. Seriously, how many times are they gonna show Favre Mic'd talking to Pat Morita up or show one of his ridiculously insignificant stats or his Skelator looking wife, or his monday night game after his father died?

ESPN took a good thing, and dipped it in Favre goo. I will never forget how they ruined the first Monday night game I've been able to watch all season. So screw you ESPN! Screw Stuart Scott and his retarded ebonics, and screw their "experts" who don't have a damn thing to say about Jay Cutler now after blasting him all season long.

I Could Just Imagine

After Knox deciding to drop the ball again before hitting the end zone for the second straight week, I bet the coaches were furious with him. None more than Ron Turner. I could just imagine Ron Turner dragging Knox down Halas hall, bullwhip in hand.

Around the League

JaMarcus Russell is not good at all. Is that such a surprise?  He played at LSU.(winks at GeauxBears)

Speaking of the Raiders, they still suck. Think teams will start raiding their locker room for good players?

Cedric Benson is back for the first time in Cincy, ranking 4th in the NFL in rushing yards while averaging 4.4 yards per carry.  I remember when I wrote a piece awhile back about the Bears bringing back Benson.  That post was met with alot of criticism and laughter. Well, who's laughing now?  Hehe. ME!

Another former Bear, Kyle Orton is continuing to shine in a Broncos uni, but I still don't miss him. Too bad though, they just got jinxed.

True story:  Ktown and I were shopping at the Goodwill clothing store.  Ktown checked the scores on his phone and yells out "Damn.  San Fran just shut out the Rams 35-0. They're so good this year, they don't even need Crabtree" There was a tall built guy behind us in the line. He yells "MAN F**K THIS S**T!" and runs out weeping. I swear that guy looked familiar. Anyway an hour later, we hear Crabtree's on a plane heading to San Fran. Jeez, I wonder where he was when he found out about that game.

Stafford>Sanchez.  If Stafford went to the Jets, he'd be a league MVP candidate.

If the Bears need a WR by year's end, I'm almost certain we have a chance of getting Braylon Edwards in the offseason.  I just hope he's not jealous of the '85 Bears. I wouldn't want him trying to knock out Matt Suey.  If he heads to New York, he'll certainly be jealous of the Yankees, and try to knock out Matsui.

Forgot to add the weekly video: Hitler Wanted Cutler in D.C. BAD!!!!

why would we want him? because he’s another 1st round squandered talent that we can use?

Better FA options

I think there are more attractive WRs on the market next year than Edwards.

Marshall has drop isses.

It’s not as bad as Edwards, but the issue exists. Marshall is better, and obviously has a great rapport with Cutler, but Edwards is a damn good consolation prize.

I'd take Edwards.

He’s no cancer. Same thing was said of Randy Moss, who proceeded to be a cog on one of the best offenses in league history. Pair him with Cutler and not only is he an annual pro-bowler, but he makes Hester, Knox, Bennet and Olsen that much better.

Benson hasn’t looked half bad at all. Sure it is early, but he has been a horse the second half of last year and beginning of this year when it comes to # of carries.

The Donkeys

Their defense has been impressive, but I’m still reluctant to say Kyle has been good. At times on Sunday he looked absolutely horrible. I think this is one of those cases where the WRs make the QB look good (please see Marshall’s run and Dallas’ indifference).

"Rollin with Nolan"

was the smartest thing Mcdaniel’s did. The broncs would be scary if they still had Cutler. But lucky for us, Mcd is half retarded and delivered Jay to us.
Yes the receivers are helping him out, but Kyle has been playin pretty close to as good as he gets. which is almost good. Like he did for us orton needs a good defense, a good running game, and a receiver to make a play or two to win games.

Jay Cutler has done more than anybody expected him to do

Actually, he’s done EXACTLY what I expected him to do.

Just look at the SB winning Pittsburgh Steelers of last season.

A). NO Running game.

B.) Crappy O-LIne (which is why Big Ben was sacked more than anybody).

C). WR’s? Yes they are better in Pittsburgh than in Chicago . . . but look closer. They are better (in large part) because of the QB.

Devin Hester? While almost everybody (except GeoMak) bagged on the guy, two of the most arrogant ex-plyer/broadcasters (Joe Theisman & Sterling Sharpe) spent a segment on last week’s NFL Network talking about how, despite their initial skepticism, that Devin Hester really IS a #1 WR in the NFL (this as they broke down his slant reception TD in the SeaHawk game.

Cutler’s game (both in his size, arm and in his rollout ability) most closely matches that of Ben Roethlisberger’s.

Pretty good company.

The sooner that those come to understand that thre Bears are NO LONGER a ‘running team,’ the better.

Don't forget me!

I’ve been a huge proponent of Hester’s for awhile now.

I defended your position on that Nightlinks thread, propheteer

about the Lions moving up in the rankings because they played so well against the Bears.

Hester? I got into it a long time ago with someone here (who’s name I happily can’t recall) about Hester. He’s the genius that said that DB’s aren’t WR’s because they CAN’T catch a FOOTBALL (pure stupidity).

It’s a FOOTBALL. It’s not a brick or a chainsaw . . it’s a football!

I then called a friend of mine who played DB in the NFL and he stated that DB’s are usually DB’s because they are the best athletes on the field (you know, the whole ‘running backwards’ and covering WR’s thing), NOT because they can’t catch a football.

Hester, as far as I have seen, hasn’t dropped anything this season and probably the only reason he hasn’t caught more balls is becasue he’s been doubled covered more than anybody, I would assume.

All I know is that I’ll take a converted DB (Hetser) and a rookie (Knox) and Olsen & Forte catching the ball over almost eveybody else’s line-up in the NF

The guy, by his own admission

NEVER played the WR postion until he started in 2007.

He’s worked his A== off, he’s got unbelievable talent and he scares the living S++T out of defenders.

Someone the other day on WCG talked about that great play that Brandon Marshall made against Dallas and said: “None of our WR’s could make that play.”

Oh really?

Yes, he jumped up and coaght the ball over the DB and yes he’s got some 4 inches on Hester, so if that’s what he meant, maybe so.

(All i know is that I’ve seen Hester jump and catch many balls. Beyond that, Charles Barkley was one of the shortest and best rebounders in the NBA. Sometimes it’s more than just heighth. It’s timing and skill).

After that, Marshall made a great run into the endzone and eluded a bunch of Cowboys on the way there . . . something we’ve ALL seen Hester do a million times with the Bears.

It’s called ‘WR envy" (not to be confused with Pe++S envy). I’m perfectly happy with who we now have (and hope they improve that position, like all positions, next year).

Everyone was criticizing the Giants.

They had lost Plaxico and failed to land guys like Boldin/Braylon in a trade.

They trusted their ‘young talent’ and told Eli to work harder this offseason to get these guys ready for 2009.

So far, they’ve done fine.

Classic line
It’s a FOOTBALL. It’s not a brick or a chainsaw . . it’s a football

He has this reputation for not having good hands, and I’m not sure where its come from. Sure, he went through an episode where he fumbled a little with punt returns, but it was only for a short period of time. Frankly, I’ve been impressed by all the WRs so far. Bennett, Hester, and Knox have all shown great hands and a willingness to make the tough catch over the middle. It would be nice to see Aroma get in there to give Jay a big target in the red-zone, but won’t happen with Davis occupying the 4th spot.

btw- rec for the one-liner; I pictured actual chainsaws flying across the field.

DB's (of course) don't practice

catching footballs as much as WR’s, so I’m not saying or implying that they are better than or as good as WR’s when it comes to catching the ball.

But I’m pretty sure when Hester switched sides he started to practice catching the ball on a constant basis and he has enough raw ability and hand/eye coordination to excell at it, if he tries hard enough.

Catching punts (even more so than kick-offs) is probably the hardest catch to make in the NFL.

Like I said, when that other guy kept mocking me this past summer because I kept defending Hester, I finally had enough when he pulled out that line about DB’s aren’t WR’s because they can’t catch the football.

I called my friend, Kenny Wheaton, who was a great DB at Oregon and plyed three seasons in the NFL with Dallas. After he got done laughing, he said they are DB’s not because they have ‘hands of stone’ but because they are usually the best athletels on the field.

And yeah, I agree. I think overall they’ve all played better than most have expected.
These guys have to (and JA has to keep adding talent at that position).

Howie Long called Cutler ‘gifted’ on the past Sunday’s pregame show. Mike Greenberg of Mike & Mike, after the Steeler game, said that “Cutler was born to throw a football.”

The receivers on the team HAVE to step up and so does the FO in the coming seasons. It would be nothing short of criminal to waste a talent like the talent Jay Cutler has for throwing a football.

I actually used to admire Favre...

though I hated him beating up on my Bears!

Now with the ESPN Favrapalooza stupidity, I genuinely despise both BF and his BFFs at ESPN. I was starting to enjoy Chuckie as a commentator; now i want to gouge out my eyes and ears. When my wife (self-proclaimed hater of the NFL) asks if the ESPN guys are looking for some Favre rubbin’ after the game, it has got to be that bad.

On another note, I still disagree about the whole Benson thing. I am a huge believer in “fit”. Benson did not “fit” with this Bears team and he had to go. I am just pissed that he had to be cut. That says it all; he had to be cut! That means no other team was gong to trade for his services. The Bears got nothing for him and nothing from him. The guy just needed to realize his meal ticket had taken flight and he needed to suck it up and just put forth the effort or he would be out of the NFL and forever remembered as a bust.

Other than that, you and I agree on Stafford>Sanchez, Orton and Russell. IMO, Russell is Cedric Benson 2.0 at QB. Every reason to succeed, but no heart! Success takes work and work is hard:

There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots.

by LostInSTL on Oct 6, 2009 7:20 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah it's funny

Both Russell and Benson held out because they wanted more money, and neither one had or played with any heart in my opinion. I think they really need to do something with these rookie contracts. If they get regulated, then stuff like this Crabtree garbage wouldn’t happen. Of course, that probably won’t happen. I would probably have better luck trying to pug a 25 man ToC than rookie contract regulations happening.

by Chitownproduct on Oct 7, 2009 6:10 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

And just as I figured...

Crabtree just signed with the 49ers. That will help them if he is ready to go. I always thought his hold out was more about the health of his foot and not about money. I think he was somehow embarrassed about not being able to go for training camp/OTAs and held out for personal and not financial reasons, but we’ll see. It will be a tougher 49ers team the Bears face in a few weeks because of it. That could be the game that he really gets on the same page with the rest of the team as it will take a few weeks to get him worked into the offense.

There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots.

by LostInSTL on Oct 7, 2009 7:26 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's the first time i heard that, and never thought of it that way.

Only thing i heard was he was upset that DHB was getting a 40 million contract with a ton of guranteed money but the dropoff from the top 10 picks to the next 20-30 in the first round is quite a big number. I thought it was all financial.

I think the best way to get the taste out of niners fan’s mouthes is to play hard and work hard and bust your butt 110%. Prove that you wanna play there, and most of the fans will forget the whole debacle. That’s the reason Bears fans always bring up Benson’s holdout..he never dug himself out of that image.

Yep, she’s naturally got high, wide cheekbones, combined with very deep set eyes. Combine that with the pale skin, and you have the skeletor thing going on. It would help if she softened up her hairdo with some bangs or something to de-emphasize the forehead.

Not something she can really help though, so I don’t hold it against her.
