Look What Our Old Friend's Up To...

Our Bears are looking like a playoff team this year - and everyone is excited about the way Jay Cutler has been winning games with his amazing 4th quarter drives.  With the game on the line, Cutler has been nothing short of spectacular this year.

But some people are making the case that the blockbuster trade with Denver may have actually been good for both clubs.  At 4-0, the Broncos are the talk of the NFL these days.  And rightfully so.  My initial impression of Josh McDaniels as a young, smart-alec, know-it-all appears to have been off base.  Brandon Marshall actually came up and hugged him during the post game press conference this past weekend.  Where'd that come from?

via www.chicagobears.com

Anyway, our beloved "neck-beard" has a sparkling 97 QB rating through 4 games, and he has yet to throw an interception this year.  Remember, last year he hadn't thrown a pick in over 200 attempts prior to that Sunday night melt-down in Minnesota.  I'm happy for KO, and I'm not at all surprised that he's playing so well in Denver.  Don't get me wrong, I still love the trade and I think that Cutler is going to be solid in Chicago for years to come.  Since Green Bay, Jay has been playing at a pro-bowl clip - with 100+ ratings in his last 3 games and only 1 interception.

Can the Bears "fix-it" quick?

Broncos Fan Here...

I’ve been saying this all along: the trade was good for both teams. Both sides got what they wanted and left the table in better shape than when they sat down. Jay Cutler is perhaps the most physically gifted QB in the NFL today and he’s next to unstoppable when he’s got it all going. McDaniels simply wanted a guy who fit better in his system (both on and off the field), as well as a bunch of additional high-value picks to improve the rest of the roster. I’m happy with it and I’d say the majority of both fanbases are, too. Can’t we just leave this be and move on?

"A player who conjugates a verb in the first person singular cannot be part of the squad, he has to conjugate the verb in the first person plural. We. We want to conquer. We are going to conquer. Using the word 'I' when you're in a group makes things complicated." ~ Wanderley Luxemburgo, 1999

Most of us have been saying the same thing for quite some time now.

When you say both sides got what they want,

is that really true? Forget the Cutler vs. Orton for a second, I’m just talking about what McDaniels wanted. Wasn’t he dead set on getting Matt Cassel, only to lose out to KC? Clearly, things worked out for the best as Orton has been fine for Denver, but my understanding of Denver’s offseason is that Orton was the consolation prize for McDaniels.

McDaniels never went after Cassell...................

That is the lie being put out there by the MSM and the one that is driving us Bronco fans nuts. The Broncos listened to an offer and rejected it plain and simple. This has been stated numerous times by the FO in Denver. They never shopped Cutler until it became apparent that Cutler wasn’t going to play ball with the Organization. For whatever reason (We’ll probably never know who was really at fault) it wasn’t going to work in Denver for Cutler. I, for one am glad Cutler is doing well for you guys, I am also happy that Orton is getting it done for us.
As a kid I loved watching Walter Peyton play and have always had a soft spot for the Bears except when they play the Broncos. I also have a Brother-in-law who lives in Minneapolis and always mouths off about the viklings, I hope you guys kill them both times this year. Anyway, I just wanted to clarify that point about McD wanting Cassell and wish the Bears good luck this year. Have a good one Bears Fans.

Huh?
They never shopped Cutler until it became apparent that Cutler wasn’t going to play ball with the Organization.

Wasn’t Cutler only upset with McDaniels because the latter was looking for a new QB? Or was it because he was upset with the firing of Shanahan?

They would have been just as successful maybe even more successful with Cutler back there.

They arent really lighting up the scoreboards. No its the defense that has turned their season up a notch from last year. And if Cutler had this defense last year you might have won 11 games last year. And give up this (off the field) stuff with Cutler, its played out. If McDaniels truly was one of those guys that didnt put up with anyone who wasnt “with” them, Brandon Marshall wouldnt be there. Did Marshall really fit what McDaniels wanted “off the field”. I dont think so, but look just won the game for you last week and all of that garbage is a distant memory.

That all being said it is clearly a good trade for both teams. Their records indicate that and lets not forget you still have a chance to really make the trade look good in the draft next year with our other first rounder, so the book really isnt closed on this trade yet. But Im lovin the Knox pickup we got from your 5th round pick that was sent along with Cutler.

Mostly I agreed the post, it was just that little on and off the field shot that you took on Cutler that just irritated me. I dont care how anyone is off the field as long as they win games. And as far as Im concerned Cutler is 3 -1 and he really hasnt even had it all going yet this year.

I Agree Anytime09

It looks to me that Denver has a Defense making a name for itself. A new coordinator and some new faces have made this possible. In addition to that, the bonding experience between McDaniels and Marshall is nothing short of a mile high miracle. So yes, Defense wins football games. If Denver still had Cutler to go with that Defense, people would be talking SuperBowl.

McDaniels and Marshall

They are winning football games right now so of course their relationship looks good. Let’s see what happens when/if they start losing games.

The Cutler/Orton

board trolling discussion thing to end.
It seems to me, that Denver fans are now thinking they got the better end of the deal…wonderful
and we seem to think we did… wonderful

how often does that work out? both sides feel they won! awesome.
The only way this is ever answered is in a flagless superbowl game, Bears/Broncos. here’s hoping to that, and the Bears winning 48-3

I completely disagree

The common-held belief is that Josh McDaniels wanted to trade for Cassel because he didn’t feel like Cutler could be a system quarterback (With checkdowns and smart throws rather than trying to hit a home run frequently). To me, it seems a lot like Turner is dialing up those types of plays rather than frequently throwing it deep. If you take out the first two quarters of the season (like most people do), Cutler has only one interception to Orton’s zero, but more importantly, his completion percentage is significantly higher (don’t have specifics but I’ll pull them up when I get home).

To me, McDaniels’ assumption that Cutler couldn’t be a system quarterback is biting him in the ass as long as Cutler continues to outshine Orton, especially when Cutler is operating a much more short yardage-focused gameplan the last few games.

first off, lol @ the bolded section

secondly, cutler had an INT on the last drive of the game against Green Bay, so that would make TWO interceptions (not counting the first two quarters of the season, naturally). oh and 5 fumbles… although he’s only lost one of those

Cassel was important to the Cutler scenario…. but not because McD wanted to pay 14 million for him this year, on top of having to build a defense from scratch. That obviously could not and was not going to happen. Cassel showed McD LAST year that McD could accomplish things without the star quarterback taking the snaps. Cassel hadn’t started since high school, and Orton was above average starting for the Bears, playing with tendencies that caught McD’s attention. Cutler showed an atitude that A first year coach didn’t want to deal with. He was unprofessional and spoiled, and he made an ass of himself. Cutler knows it. He also has his first game of this year to think about. The best thing that could have happened for the Bears in my opinion… it put Cutler in the position of having to take an honest look at himself. He knows very well what he could have had in Denver with our offense, the coach, and now the defense. He put himself in a position of having to grow up fast. So far, I think it is sticking.
In my opinion it was great for both teams… but as has been pointed out ad nauseum, it had the potential to go sour for the Bears. I am happy to see that it didn’t… as much as I wanted for him to fail at first, I am glad he is moving on with it.

The only "tendecies" that Orton is showing McD...

is that he can repeatedly under throw his Wrs. The Broncos are 4-0 because of Nolan and that defense. They have won in spite of the fact that they have a QB that can’t take advantage of opportunities on the field. It’s obvious to anyone who is really watching the games. (and trust me it’s obvious to Eddie Royal and Tony Schefler). Even Mark Schlereth has noted that the problem now with Denver is Orton and his short comings with the offense. Throwing underthrown TD passes to Marshall is cute when you’re down 3 or the game is tied, but what happens the first time the Broncos are down by 10 or 13 in a game and you need that QB to make a play and not depend on deflections and Superman efforts from BMarsh?

I wish Orton the best but the whole “McDaniels is a genius and got it right” crap is getting to be ridiculous. The reason you guys may only be a playoff contender and not a SuperBowl contender is because this pompous guy came in and pissed off the best player on your team. And for what? Cause he didn’t fit “his” system? A system that has nothing to do with the 4 wins you have now?

As it stands, if McDaniels had came in, let the #2 offense in the league be just that, and let Nolan do what he’s doing now, you guys could probably start buying SuperBowl tickets today. Now you’re a team that has to hope and pray that every Sunday, the defense shows up and the special teams plays great. Welcome to Bears world for the last 50 years.

You read and accept too much pulp media. Cutler was pissed off long before McDaniels was even hired. He was Shanahan’s boy. He requested that OC Bates be kept and he got canned as well. That is where it started, and the Cassel rumors were an excuse to take it over the top. Cassel was a play by the Patriots to gain picks and lose a big contract. Worked well for them and not so well for KC. McDaniels had a comfort level with Cassel, and its his freaking job to listen if someone had an offer for Cutler… but 14 million was never going to happen, especially when other teams were willing to cough up so much for Cutler. Some Bears fans keep trying to turn this into drama that it isn’t. Most of us still posting here are not even bagging on you or Cutler. Personally I wish you both a productive life.
As for taking it a step farther and bagging on Orton or the offense, that is just ignorant. NFL.com has a wonderful highlight library… go take another look at those “underthrown” passes to Marshal. The tipped play vs Cincy was thrown between two defenders, above Marshal’s head where he could go up for it. The play of the week vs the Cowboys was also thrown high where only Marshal would get to it. Newman and his massive vertical could get no where near it. McDaniels, like Hoodie and even Shanahan, has a complex offense that is going to take a while to synchronize. Orton has done well thus far, as has McDaniels, as far as that goes. The defense you are crediting has been great… but they haven’t scored us any points. That is all on the Offense and McD.
Mcdaniels tried to “let the #2 offense in the league be just that”… Cutler didn’t want any part of it. The OWNER fired him for not moving forward, not McDaniels. Of course McDaniels would be able to do more with Cutler… had he participated.
It’s all well and good to dish it out… but dish the goods.. not just what you hear the blowhards on ESPN regurgitating. Both guys are doing well, and I am happy to see it. If you go take a peek at the QB stats on ESPN, Orton is slightly ahead of Cutler (which no one thought would happen) but they are essentially even across the board. Not bad for a noodle arm who under-throws everyone. Cutler seems to be ironing out his INT problems as well.
Just positive stuff guys….

The Cutler/Orton board trolling discussion thing to end.

Whatever that was suppose to mean precisely…. the thread was started by a Bears fan, not a Bronco fan.

Welcome to Bears world

couldn’t agree more…. and the whole Orton was above average starting for the Bears thing??? Which still puts him near the bottom of QBs in the league, and well below where Cutler was

What I've learned from the KO/Denver Situation

receivers can make the QB look good, not just the other way around

Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal have been outstanding, Kyle has too, but his numbers are not as good if he was still playing for the Bears

by SamuraiMike50 on Oct 12, 2009 10:59 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

And he's also got a much better offensive line

Our line is probably older, too. But when you give Orton time to sit back there and find people, he’s gonna make the throws and beat you – even if it’s off of the check-downs. Orton’s smart and he prepares himself to come in ready to play every Sunday.

as much as i'm going to hate saying this

due to the many smug Broncos fans, Orton seems to have found his niche, and his team, i’m happy for him. he never got a fair shake here. always battling for a job, performing well, and getting benched etc. etc. I hope he throws for 20+ TDs and 3,000+ yds this year.

i also hope Sizzle throws for 4,500+ and 30+ tds…. Go Bears!

I agree with almost everything except

I think Orton did get a fair shake here. He was able to grow and play and eventually start for an NFL team here. I do think he got screwed being 3rd behind Griese when he got here, I’ll say that.

it was inevtible in 05 for Grossman to come in, but we were 10-5 with him, and they just threw Grossman in… I didnt agree. and then yes, the Griese debacle
