Bears Defense Come To Play - Bears Win 30-6
On a day the Bears honored Walter Payton on the 10th anniversary of his death, the Bears put on a defensive show at the expense of the Cleveland Browns. The Bears defense recovered 3 fumbles and intercepted 2 passes, the last for a Charles Tillman TD return.
The offense had great field position most of the day and while not doing much with it in the earlier possessions did find the end zone on a pair of Forte TD runs on later ones.
The Bears have 5 of the next 7 games at home, this stretch is where the Bears need to make a move. But to do that they are going to have to fix or find some patches for this offensive line. Jay Cutler was sacked 4 times and was under pressure for most of the day. Forte showed some signs of life today, if the line can start opening some holes Forte is ready to get this thing moving.
Stats
Jay Cutler : 225 yards, 1 INT
Matt Forte: 90 yards, 2 TDs
Devin Hester: 7 receptions and 81 yards.
Garrett Wolfe: 5 runs for 53 yards
Next Week: We get to see if we are still who we thought we were when the Cardinals come to Chicago.

Good D always makes me happy
The O needs to step it up. We should’ve won by much more, lets see the D play solid again next week and we might have something going here.

i'm still concerned about the D
they didn’t really generate a ton of pressure. the o-line was pretty awful, per usual. cutler was roughed up badly, and cleveland isn’t that good of a defense to be doing that to us.

I'm concerned about the O
Boy, they had good field position all game and could only muster 30 points against a horrible team.

in the line's defense
Rob Ryan was dialing up some pretty zany blitz pacakages. It was apparent that Beekman made a difference.
by Cosmis on Nov 1, 2009 6:35 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
but there are ways around this
throw a lot of short slant patterns, screens, etc…our line is pretty clearly not going to open up many running lanes, and can’t keep a clean pocket for cutler often, so we might as well work with it. if you can’t protect your qb long enough for deep plays, run short stuff ’til the defenses bring fewer guys, which then opens things up. we need a lot more 7 yard slant patterns, 8 yard curls, etc.

Is anyone surprised?
Going out and getting Cutler so he can play behind our line is like showing up to prom driving a ’76 Pacer:

Not very optimistic
about the rest of the year, cause the offensive looks ordinary with not much creativity as usual from Turner. Not enough misdirection, screens (I didn’t see one all game today), draws, etc. Also, the defensive line was pretty mediocre against a sub-par Browns line.

I agree completely
I’ll always take a win, but I don’t think we did anything great. The Browns are definitely worse than the Lions, even last year’s version of the Lions, in my opinion. Our d-line was mediocre, as you described, and if there is a worse QB than Derek Anderson in the NFL, I don’t know who it is….and don’t say Rex, even he could throw better than this guy.
Offensively, we sucked. I don’t care about 30 points. We should have broken 50 with the 5 turnovers and great field position. Getting turned away at the goal line at 1st and goal from the 2 was embarrassing, especially since we took all 4 shots at it. Our offensive line is terrible and I’m afraid they have even made Jay gun shy. He looked worse today than he has all year, even when he had the time. The only really good throw he made was the long sideline pass to Knox. I really think he looks defeated because he knows his running game is terrible, the offensive line stinks, and his coaches should all be fired. I saw his post game interview and he was asked about his exchange with Rob Ryan. His face lit up talking about how much he loves Rob Ryan and feels like he’s one of the best coaches in the league. The thing he kept bringing up was how you can always see how much the guys who play for him are excited and have fun. Maybe I was reading too much into it, but it was almost an indictment of the Bears coaching staff and what stiffs they are.
I’ll wait for next week’s game against a real offense before I say the defense is back. My gut feel is Warner and crew will reveal exactly what kind of team we have on the defensive side of the ball. I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t think so.

Some of it a bit of a stretch
but certainly can be construed that way. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to learn that Cutler hates Turner’s play calling and ultra-conservative nature.

Good post BF611
All the way around. With all the takeways they should’ve scored 50.
Cutler probably like’s Ryan cause his guys play with passsion. Like Singletary’s guys.
Before the season started (and even now) nobody talks about how great the talent is in SF on the defensive side of the ball.
Singletary’s guys sack Manning three times (he was only sacked three times in the previous six games) and deny Manning a TD pass in the game.
Some coaches are better than others when it comes to getting their guys to play.
by GeoMak on Nov 1, 2009 5:05 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I think all Singletary has to do to motivate* his guys to play well is to show them footage of him at #50, waiting for the snap, literally steaming with hostility as he prepared to launch himself like a missile at the middle of the offense and Ditka have mercy on anything that got in the way. 20 years later and that’s still my abiding memory of the man as a player.
- and by “motivate” I mean “scare”

This win does little to encourage me about the rest of the season. We looked pretty sloppy on both lines and in other areas — I don’t see a killer instinct in this team. I hope I am wrong.
by Sweetness Never Dies on Nov 1, 2009 6:38 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I saw
Two bubble screens and 1 draw play.I really don’t think this “lack of creativity” is on Turner.Cutler made some mistakes yesterday reading coverage, mostly due to the fact that the Browns were waiting to the last second to tip their hand on coverage and blitz packages.
Cutler’s running for his life back there, but even on the plays where he had 5+ seconds he had a hard time making a decision. Whether it’s indicitive of the O-Line,Jay Cutler making mistakes,or a great defensive game called by Ryan,I’m beginning to think everyone hates Turner because it’s easy to.
You're being very Un-Dude right now.

It's clear what needs to happen in the offseason.
1. Fire Ron Turner/ bring in someone creative
2. Revamp the offensive line
3. Find a defensive Tackle, End, Safety
4. They need a 2nd RB to pare with Forte.

A smart team could find a role for 3 RBs
Look at the Giants last year with Jacobs, Ward, and Bradshaw. They all have different strengths and were used in different situations. Wolfe may never been even a solid committee back, but that doesn’t mean he has no value to the team.

Just got back from the game
has to be Turner’s worst game plan for the year. Our third down play calling was horrid. There were no plays called over the middle to our wr’s. No drag routes, curls, etc..Cutler had nothing to throw to all day. Not one screen pass to Forte al lday and the middle was wide open. Did anyone else notice who was playing free safety for the browns today??? Mike freaking Furrey a wr. How we can not take advantage of that I don’t know..

Cutler needs to call His Plays.........
I strongly believe that Cutler is talented enough to call his own plays and audibilize at the line of scrimmage. He needs to stay healthy for the long stretch and with these weak ass plays Turner is calling he becomes a constant target for the Defenses to punish him just let him loose and see if he can make things happen with His Damn plays before he’s sitting on the sideline like Urlacher!

The worst 30-6 blowout ever?
The problems with offense are many and obvious. It was the defense, however, that made me sick to my stomach. Yes, they only gave up six points, but it wasn’t like they were making stops out there all day. Rather, the Browns just screwed up so often it made the Bears look good. the Bears couldn’t stop the run, and didn’t need to stop the pass, because Anderson can’t throw. What I would have liked to see was some actual defense being played.
Who would have thought I would have felt worse about the team after a blowout win?
by mac30 on Nov 1, 2009 4:52 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I don't think it was the greatest Defensive performance but...
they played better than you are giving them credit. They did what a defense is suppose to do by creating turnovers and giving the offense great field position. It’s not the fault of the D that we had to settle for 3 field goals in the first half. Hell they even scored on defense. I’m not saying they were the greatest ever and yes I know we played the Browns however there’s a thing called being too critical. They played well, give them that. The offense worries me more with the performace they had.

The turnovers were lucky
with one exception – the strip of Massaqoui, but otherwise they were Browns mistakes, not good Bears defense. With a halfway competent team they would have marched up and down the field against us.

it was a great athletic play
but on a terribly thrown ball
don’t get me wrong, I’m happy they got those turnovers, its just that against a decent team, they maybe get one or two, and in the mean time the other team is going up and down the field.
by mac30 on Nov 1, 2009 5:56 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Right
It was a terrible pass. Most INT’s are. And most DB’s don’t make that catch.
Look I’m as critical of their defense as anybody. And the Browns are clearly one of the worst teams in the NFL.
But the Bears held them to 202 yards. If their offense could do anything with most of those takeaways and the corresponding great field position, they should’ve scored 50+ points.

that you or I could’ve caught that would’ve sealed the deal late in the game when the 49ers played the Vikings. He catches that ball right in his hands/chest and the 49ers win. Game over. No miracle finish by Favre.

Sadly I agree
We’ve already established the problems with run blocking, but the pass protection was especially awful today. The fact that we let the #32 ranked defense in the NFL sack JC 4 times today is shameful. You could argue that the GB line is worse, but I don’t think Rodgers got sacked at all vs the Browns, and he eats the most sacks in the league. AR has a tendency to hang on to the ball too long though.
It’s so disappointing that we finally have a good QB, and the never gets time to set his feet before he throws, throw a deep ball, or wait for a receiver to open up.

Caught only a few highlights...
but Beekman knows what he’s doing and executed fairly well. He needs to continue as the starter because he will get better with more reps, whereas Omiyale hit the capability wall in the Steelers game.
Otherwise, the defense looked more like it had in ‘05 and ’06 with the turnovers. Not to say they played well, but if they can create turnovers, they can hold their own. But let’s face it, this is perhaps the worst offense in the NFL and if the Browns had any consistency this could have been a much different game.
Not sold on Manning at FS mostly because he’s constantly out of position which tells me he isn’t smart enough to succeed long term. He can remain at nickel and be used more in pressure than coverage and be useful.
Bowman needs to work on his fundamentals, plain and simple; try keeping your head up on those tackles Zack!
This should have been a blowout similar to what the Bengals did last week, but a win is a start. I saw the players step up at every position, but i am still worried about the play calling on both sides. I am waiting to see either line simply manhandle the opposition before I can say the players and coaches are on the same page.
Lastly, I think the Bears can still find a FA short yardage back. This team does not make the playoffs if they cannot gain 2 yards on 4 plays against a terrible Browns D.

there has been discussions since he was drafted about why he isn’t fitting in a Safety, why he originally moved to nickel in the first place.

I'm gonna respectfully disagree...
Manning has been solid this year. From Green Bay till now. Not only did he have the INT, but he also had a nice strip yesterday… Plus, the big knock on him in the past has been getting caught out of position… I haven’t noticed that, nearly as much this year. In fact, I’ve only noticed steady improvement from Manning in 2009.

Remember DMS? I blame his slow development on Lovie…
As long as Lovie keeps him at FS, IMHO, Manning will be an above average (or better) FS for a while.

Not a coincidence
We’re finally seeing some progress from him at FS because he’s seeing more reps than ever before.

I’m quite the skeptic as well.

I just know it… if i root for manning and get excited with him at FS, he’s a lock to screw it up, or get injured… so if i stay skeptical, maybe he’ll be in the pro bowl

He does pretty much suck
What a waste of talent….shhhh, we’ll just pretend so he doesn’t hear us praise him.

uh...with our o-line, there aren't a lot of RBs that get those 2 yards
i wouldn’t mind another RB, but yeah, if we keep getting blown off the ball, i don’t think it matters much. forte is running a bit timid, but still, the line is the real issue here.

NFLN
showed some omi won kenobi highlights… and on one play, he didnt even block anyone… and the others were very similar.. it basically called him out.
so Beekman just lining up today made a difference

nope
but having beekman in there, made Pace look worse too. instead of wondering which of em was letting the guys through,,,it is simple, both of them were

Would have been nice....
to win 34-6 in honor of Walter!!! Also… we lost BIG to GB last year and bounced back the SAME WAY against ST. Louis…. But what is that really saying… cuz Cleveland and St. Louis are just bad teams… if we didint bounce back like that… especially at HOME… what would that say about US!!! We are playing better than I expected considering the fact that we are on 3rd string LB’s and all kinds of new people in new places!!! BEAR DOWN!!!
GO BEARS!!!!
