What would you do with the rest of the 2009 Season?
Here are my thoughts while answering another question and thought why not discuss it.
Lovie needs to get a Defensive Coordinator with a sack who knows how to run a 3-4 or 4-3 base and implement it ASAP in prep for next year’s draft class (which will be tough considering what we need and the picks we don’t have). Lovie needs to be the head coach to watch the game and make corrections fast or being he seems incapable of doing such at least a dedicated DC could.
I also say play the 2nd and 3rd stringers, that way we can evaluate who has skills where and who has the hunger to play. Possible raise some trade stock levels and make some moves. You never know who will emerge and be the next starter for our injury prone and wrecked team.
Unfortunately it looks like a lost season already so why not get some good out of it?
Of course the fire Lovie and Turner would be my first option but that looks unlikely so I left it for last.

For the Defense Bob Ryan
Look what he has done in Cleavland…with what little talent they have. He has creativity in blitzes, and overall defensive scheme. Their defense has kept them in games, there offense is a joke, but he at least has one side of the team looking respectable.
Also, he would be able to fire up Cutler and the offense like we saw in the game against the Browns, it would just be for the same team the next time…

season's
only half over. there’s still a lot that can happen. heck, anything can happen in the nfl.
look at the giants two years ago. they were sitting at 4-4 with a bunch of problems and they won the SB.
i don’t see why everyone is in super panic mode, saying we need to test the backups now. again, the season is only HALF OVER.
yes, we have a lot of problems, both with personnel and coaches (and scheme to a far lesser extent, it’s more coaches and players not executing the scheme properly), but every team has problems. We’re not even close to how bad some teams are.
Heck, look at the lions and the raiders. that sucks. Oakland’s SB run seems so long ago…
basically, i want the coaches and players to keep trying, keep playing. they know the season’s not over, and you all should as well.

i agree
1 game back of the wildcard and we play the team in 1st, the Eagles. The Giants are only a half game up and they’re struggling, and the Packers are a non-factor. Obviously the way the Bears have played makes it seem unlikely, but (to the original poster) you’re seriously suggesting playing backups when the wildcard is realistically in reach and we still have 2 games against our division leader? Ridiculous.

definition of stupidity
. . . doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
So lets keep the tired Tampa 2 and get blown out again. Great theory. Oh we could use the throw a penny in the wishing well technique, maybe that will work.
With all the injuries, we are playing 1/4 of the second stringers anyways, so what does it hurt to try something different, sub them in on a few plays. What it will be worse than the Bengals, Cards games?
(And yes – switching mid-season is unrealistic but making the commitment to switch off season and getting someone in to evaluate the talent does not seem like a bad idea to me)

agreed
Throw in the subs, and lets see who, if any, will be standouts. Honestly at this point, and I hate being so negative, thats about the only thing we can salvage from this nightmare. I mean, if there really isnt a MAJOR miracle in store for the bears, then why not just prepare some of the 2nd and 3rd strings with some real game time???
Eat. Sleep. Pray. Watch chicago play.
P.S.
You've obviously mistaken me for someone who gives a shit about what you think.

to clarify
that’s assuming the Falcons get in over the Bears, I see it as a fight for the last spot. But even the Falcons aren’t a lock, still a lot of games left.

While I love the 3-4
it’s not a move you do mid season and as long as Lovie is here, the 4-3 will be as well

A lot of successful teams are running the 3-4 right now, but more importantly, all the good defenses are running spectacular blitz packages! I don’t think the 3-4 would be any sort of solution if you don’t have the personnel or the proper blitzing calls. You seem to know a good amount about defense so if you look at the top defenses right now, it isn’t their formation, is it?

Yep, players make plays
If you have the right players for your scheme you’ll be successful… add in a play caller that can best utilize his players and you really got something!

I agree that now is too soon to call the season a wash
…and start playing backups. But I think if we lose two of our next three games, that’s about it.
In that case, I’d like to see Omiyale at left tackle. We know Orlando Pace has nothing left and he’ll be gone, but LT is Omiyale’s natural position and it’s possible (albeit unlikely) that he can still be effective there. At this point we have to accept that we have MANY holes at MANY positions and we won’t be able to fill many of them through the draft. And we’ve had pretty shitty FA luck lately. If we can get an upgrade (however small) with Omiyale/Beekman over what we have it’s worth a shot.

If anyone gets moved to LT
it should be Williams and then tryout Omiyale at RT. LT is williams natural position. We need a power player at RT.
Roach love the run stuffin', but don't forget about the TE over the middle!!

I agree with TheMan1 that running into a wall 10 times without looking for the door is not the answer to any problem…rather need to assess the teams true weaknesses and plan a strategy to try overcome them. It may seem semantic but in a way, we have to strategise to the strengths of the players we have…like new ways of opening up holes for Matt Forte etc.
