Larry Johnson: Option or Due Dilligence

Larry Johnson, what comes to mind when you hear his name? has-been? wasted talent? bigot? or maybe Cedric Benson the Second?

                                     Larry-johnson-vs-oakland_medium

Larry Johnson (LJ) was recently cut from the Kansas City Chiefs and no one claimed him from waivers because of his contract, $2.3 million. Since becoming a FA Larry Johnson has been contacted by four teams.

Star-divide

According to LaCanfora at the NFL Network the Bears have contacted Larry Johnson's agent.

Take a look at the Bears' current running back corps.

  • Matt Forte-- Has the ability to be a top back in the league, but currently not getting the job done
  • Garrett Wolfe-- lacerated kidney, but has shown flashes when used in screen passes and has become a ST standout
  • Adrian Peterson-- injured earlier this season and in the last year of his contract and on the wrong side of 30.
  • Kevin Jones-- out for the season, and has become very unreliable, even in the preseason he was not showing the brilliance earlier in his career against second string defenses. He has suffered multiple injuries to his lower body and may be an unfortunate career cut short.

The minute that the Chicago Bears traded for Jay Cutler we left the mantra of we are a run first team. Teams over the past decade have proven that you need to be able to be able to move the ball through the air to take advantage of better defenses.

The recent Cincinnati/Arizona debacles and our Comcast Red Zone Efficiency, tied for 25th in the NFL12 for 27 prior to ARI, prove that we still need to be able to run the ball.

The main ways that the run game could help.

  • Increase time of possession. Simply put the longer we have the ball the less time the opposing team has to score on us. Did you know that since 1920 prior to this year the Bears have allowed opponents to score 31 or more points in the first half 5 times? Now halfway through the 2009 season they have allowed 31 points of more in the first half twice.
  • Increase red zone efficiency, this is something Bears fans love. When I was at the Bears-Packers game at Soldier Field the fans and I started a chant "stuff it down their throat!" when the Bears got in the red zone right behind the Packers bench.
  • Third down conversions. Keep this in mind the next time you see the Bears fail to convert on 3rd and less than 3 yards.
  • Open up passing lanes for the passing game. If safeties have to constantly worry about the run they play closer to the line of scrimmage, you'll notice when announcers say there's "7 or 8 men in the box" they are referring to players coming up to the area behind the defensive line to prevent the run.

Simply put the Bears need to get a run game going in order to compete for a 2010 playoff spot and the Bears need a defense and a run game to compete for a Championship.

Where does Larry Johnson fit into this? 2.7 yard average per carry, 0 TDs, and a bad attitude does not sound like the answer...

Larry Johnson has disappeared since 2007, the same season that the Offensive Line started to fall apart. He has not been producing, but he played on the Kansas City Chiefs his entire career since he was drafted in 2003.

The Kansas City Chiefs are a team on verge of collapse, did you know that since 2007-present they are 7-33. Does this condone Larry Johnson's actions? No but I like the fact that he wants to win more than anything.

Larry Johnson with a decent OL over 2005 and 2006 LJ averaged 1770 yards per season, 4.7 yards per carry, 18.5 TDs rushing per season, 10.2 yards per reception, and 3 receiving TDs.

Do the Bears have a decent OL? No

Do I think Jerry Angelo brings in Larry Johnson? No, but I hope this got you thinking about the running game and about options we can to improve it

LJ my thoughts

LJ is on his downward slide. He is 30 (or 31) now. This is his 7th year in the NFL and a RB efficiency span is not that long anymore. There are exceptions but this seems to be the norm time for decline.

His risks outweight the benefits. Older, legs getting worn out, been on decline already, we have no line for him to have a chance. All that and then add in his behavioral escapades as of late and attitude? No thanks.

If they do sign him, it better be dirt cheap, short term, and with strict behavioral and performance clauses. (Which the Bears have shown no competence in doing lately -ala Tommie Harris)

NO

The running backs aren’t the problem, it’s the O-Line not creating any room to run. Why would LJ want to come to a team that can’t block?

I agree about the Oline
Do the Bears have a decent OL? No

but honestly it is partially the running backs faults. Forte has been going down first hit, last year he’d take a few and used his balance and his vision to get larger gains especially when receiving. Larry Johnson being released may be the fire that he needs to get his nose to the grindstone and I see him as an upgrade over our current back up running back corps. I mean do you really think AP is going to be around next season? Kevin Jones has had so many injuries I’m not sure if he’ll be viable when he comes back next year, and I do like Wolfe but he isn’t a true backup, he’s more of a specialist.

The next Cedric?

Cedric Benson is only turning 27. Larry Johnson will be 30. Not even Cedric Benson has been as TERRIBLE off the field as Larry Johnson. The guy has no character or respect at all.

I think that drinking and boating and drinking and driving (after your team told you you have a short leash)

Is a whole lot worse than making a fake twitter account and calling your new head coach a f “word.” The way the word is used nowadays is more to say that something is stupid than it’s original meaning. LJ may very well be homophobic, but until this he hasn’t had any problems and I’m sure he’s learned his lesson.

By saying that he’s the next Cedric Benson (this was more to throw it out there anyways) is that he’s a RB who has been cut by his team and it may be the fire that he needs to resurrect his career, the main difference between LJ and Cedric?

Cedric is having a career year but if he continues pace he’ll get 1674 yards. I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets less as the season goes on.

LJ

over 2005 and 2006 LJ averaged 1770 yards per season

everyone here is talking about how good Cedric Benson is now, but he wasn’t even as good as LJ was a few years ago. LJ has the potential to be a great complement back and for the league minimum you wouldn’t want to roll the dice? or do you need to save that money for Matt Jones? ha

I am not positive, but weren’t the charges against Cedric for boating while intoxicated dropped?

Larry Johnson has also has had disputes with management of his contract and was suspended for SPITTING IN A WOMAN"S FACE. This is just another instance of a football player thinking they can do whatever they want whenever they want.

Larry Johnson had his stellar seasons and is now past his prime. Cedric Benson never had good seasons until he got his head on straight. Even if LJ gets his head on straiight, he is “old” for a RB.

"but until this he hasn’t had any problems..."

Arrests (all against women):

2003: Felony assault + domestic battery
2005: Assault
2008 (Feb.): Assault
2008 (Oct.): Assault

Using a homophobic slur is a way of calling someone stupid? C’mon man…

Using a homophobic slur is a way of calling someone stupid? C’mon man…

yeah, this is pretty common knowledge that the word f*g no longer refers to just gay people, have you not been around anyone under the age of 17 in America the past decade?

Also wow LJ has been caught a lot, still think he’d be better than anything we have as a backup to Forte.

LJ may beat women, but so does Sean Connery, not excusing it, but it just gets a light shown on it when it’s against African Americans.

Couple of things...

Yes, I am constantly around teens, through coaching baseball and mentoring. Granted, they say a lot of things around each other that they wouldn’t say around adults, but that isn’t one of them that I’ve heard. besides, LJ is not under 17.

As for the race thing, it doesn’t get a different light from me. It is a bad thing that is does happen that way a lot of times, but this blog is not a place for that discussion.

As for LJ as a backup to Forte, for the league minimum, maybe.

I guess I don’t really see why you brought it up when I had already stated

LJ may very well be homophobic

Larry Johnson, what comes to mind when you hear his name?… bigot?

I’m not excusing his actions, but I am saying for league minimum it’s worth rolling the dice on a once elite back to be a compliment when 2/3 of our backup RBs are injured and the last one has been injured this season and is gone after this season

Not sure what Sean Connery has to do with Larry Johnson at all. Jerry Seinfeld has as many TDs this year as Earl Bennett.

I love Seinfeld

they just don’t make TV shows like they used to :(

What The Hell

Can’t make our Team any worse. Sign him.

The real question should be

can he make the team better.

You think LJ is going to play for the league minimum?

by brands735 on Nov 11, 2009 6:46 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

He'd take the vet minimum for the rest of this season.

he's not better than Wolfe

Wolfe has more TDs better YPC less fumbles and he’s younger

by DaHamsta on Nov 11, 2009 7:03 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Come on now. Wolfe has had his carries in mop up time, not even comparable.

When Wolfe actually gets significant carries then we can talk.

only one way to find out

and sign him.

I don’t think the Bears will, but I definitely think he could be a welcome change of pace back.

I don't see him helping

Up front is where it all starts, and the O-line isn’t getting it done. Even for the league minimum he’s not worth the trouble. Forte does everything better than him already, no matter if he’s struggling with his yards per carry.

People who don’t care don’t respond, and people who do care do respond. Does that make sense Bronco fans trying to validate the trade?

by propheteer on Nov 11, 2009 11:13 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

If he would agree to the league minimum, then I vote to sign him

Like i’ve stated before, it wouldnt hurt us. Ands speaking of hurt God forbid we have an injury to either of our remaining RB, we would be up shit creek. I think have him signed for the minimum is a win win for the bears. Some ppl say he would disrupt the team somehow with his off field antics, well, that happens, teams deal with it. And why not have forte resting on a few downs and let LJ carry some of the load. It may be beneficial in more ways than one to have him. I say they do it. BUT, history of this org shows that they are very slow to make decisions, so they will prob miss the window of opportunity, and having a short week doesnt help either.

Eat. Sleep. Pray. Watch chicago play.

P.S.

You've obviously mistaken me for someone who gives a shit about what you think.

Forte

doesn’t need any rest. He’s only carrying the ball 5 times a game.
