The Bears Den - 11/11/09

Bear_s-den2_medium

....where Thursday night could get ugly.

ChicagoBears.com

Could a different mindset help the defense?

The Bears are confident they can still save the season.

Mike Singletary is set to face the Bears for the first time as HC.

Chicago Sun-Times

Mark Potash: How about Ron Rivera for HC of the Bears? Shut up, Mark, and stop being a meatball.

Lovie is accepting blame.

Vernon Davis is talkin smack about the defense. And he's absolutely right - I'm starting him on my fantasy team over Olsen.

Star-divide

Chicago Tribune

Lovie Smith will be fired....someday.

Ted Phillips believes the Bears can turn it around.

The D is lacking defense.

The Bears have some problems at safety.

Daily Herald

Tommie's big paydays with the Bears are over.

Lovie hates being average.

ESPN Chicago

Tommie is still waiting to hear from the NFL.

Tommie also said the 49ers game is a must-win. And must-punchie.

Lack of discipline: It's happened in the Lovie era before.

Watch out for Willis!

Mike Singletary: I will always love the Bears.

MINDSET: WHATZ DAT?=?CONFIDENCE

I don’t think that if you change nothing essentially and play the same strategy that keeping your mindset that you will win (even at the last minute of the game) will work. Hey…that’s my opinion. But mindset is probably synonymous with the confidence that with a good strategy & probably a little luck, you can pull through a few bad patches. The problem was (I think) that the strategy in both the Cinci & Arizona games were somewhat similar, atleast defensively…and then almost the same type of result(s)!

Lovie Defense Philosophy is just a piece of paper.

I’m actually starting Frank Gore this Thursday for my fantasy team. How can Bears management allow Lovie to return when he’s drawing up game plans and calling plays for the defense? The players obviously are not responding to his methods and/or believing in his message. Even with the all world, over hyped, Marenelli, the Bears defensive players can’t turn it around. To bring Lovie back next year is like believing Marenelli can have some effect on this defense. What other tricks could this coaching staff and management use to convince the fans and themselves, they have a plan that’ll return this team to the playoffs next year? Bring in a boatload of free agents and make sure one of those guy are Brian Dawkins like to fire up this defense, because coaches can’t? Tell us Urlacher will make a difference in 2010? The Front Office, if they are committed to winning, consider funny math that suggest that $1.35 million or so over and his 22 million over 4 years even out, do to have him on the cheap for his first few years and a SB. Then, hire some proven football minds with offense and defense credentials to fix this team. No more games with the fan base.

talk about whistling past the graveyard

Sure, all the D needs is a different mindset…and a different coach…and different line players…and different secondary coverage. But yeah, change that attitude and all will be well.

Why is Lovie constantly on D Manning's jock?

Once again he points out what a great athlete Manning is when asked how they will contain V Davis. Too bad this isn’t a 100 yard dash or obstacle course. Manning cost us the Super Bowl with a blown coverage and is constantly out of position, yet Lovie continues to blow smoke up his ass and the Bears safety positions continue to be awful in coverage. Its not like Darren Sharper was avaiable was he? I think he has more INTs and defensive TDs this year than the entire Bear defense.

Manning is showing nothing but progression...

and Lovie has done a great jorb with him. Hopefully, he’ll become a bright spot on our defense.

I agree that Manning

has a pretty bright future…I hope….and keep in mind the poor guy’s been put into more positions than Jenna Jameson…

So, not completely his fault.

As for Sharper—he’s also benefitting from perhaps THE most dangerous and prolific offensive attack in the game. Opponents are constantly heaving it deep, in desperation, to play catch-up.
The rest of his defense hans’t been too shappy, either.
I’m not taking anything away from Sharper, but I suspect if you put Manning in a similar circumstance he might have numbers more akin to Sharper’s.

*hasn’t been too shabby

(“shappy” is something completely different)

we need to leave manning at FS for the season

moving him from that position was a huge mistake. had he stayed there, at least we’d know by now what we had with him. he’s got all the physical tools, and seems to be a hard worker. he just needs more experience. by the end of the year, we’ll know whether he’s the answer, or if we need to find a new FS. he’s definitely been more consistent this year.

Are you serious about Lovie doing a great job with Manning or am I just missing the sarcasm?

It was coined before I joined the site, but if it wasn’t for Lovie would there even be “DMS”? He’s done a horrible job with him, in my opinion, and has been the main reason for Manning having to still learn the position.

by BearFan611 on Nov 11, 2009 7:10 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I am serious.

This past offseason, Lovie started working 1-on-1 with Manning, and he is definitely showing that he can do more than just play nickel.

Is he where he needs to be right now? No way. But his progression can be seen each week it seems like.

Maybe by next year…

We'll have to continue to agree to disagree on this

because in my opinion, this is another example of Lovie and his staff not developing or identifying talent. I don’t see how wasting 3 years of a player’s career can be considered a good coaching job.

I'm only talking about this season,

not his career as a whole.

TV ratings were

way down vs. Arizona.

was it weather or lack of interest?

by Hatchetm on Nov 11, 2009 9:58 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

The game was almost nationally televised as it was two 4-3 teams. A lot of non-local markets left the game after the first half.

From ESPN Insider:

“We know that the Texans, Bears, Colts and Steelers have all but entirely taken themselves out of the running for Larry Johnson — either due to chemistry issues or his putrid stats so far, as seen at right.”

Can we stop talking about the women spitter now?

by brands735 on Nov 11, 2009 10:20 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

he's not really any good, either

this isn’t LJ from 3 years ago…those carries killed his game (like most RBs who go well over 300 carries in a season). forget the character issues, the guy is a 2-3 ypc runner now.

by guy incognito on Nov 11, 2009 12:03 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

this team could turn around..

but we just don’t have the personnel to do it this year..or next year most likely..we should focus on building around cutler over the next 2 seasons if anything.
