49ers-Bears: Ask 49ers fans from Niners Nation

Hey everybody, this is Fooch from Niners Nation, the SB Nation 49ers blog.  Our squads are squaring off in what should be an interesting battle between scuffling teams.  It's certainly even more intriguing given Mike Singletary's history with the Bears.  I can only imagine the reception he would have received had this game been played in Chicago.

It's a short week so things are a bit truncated, but I thought I'd throw together a FanPost and try and answer any questions you might have about the 49ers heading into Thursday's game.  I'm on the west coast so depending on when you get questions in it might take me a bit to get an answer to you, but either way I'll get you my thoughts.  Also, I'll post a link to this at NN and get some of the readers there to offer some of their own answers.

So fire away.

What are the differences with Alex Smith and Shaun Hill?

Smith v. Hill

Smith is more athletic and has more of the general “QB skills” people tend to look for. At the same time, up until earlier this season Hill was successful in limited opportunities with the 49ers. He had three solid games in 2007 and he played well the second half of last season. However, he was named starting QB to begin this season but never really was able to step up and make the necessary plays on a consistent basis. He looked very solid at times, but he looked poor much of the time and just couldn’t provide a consistent threat.

That’s not to say either is the answer for this team. The best way to describe it is Hill would be low risk, low reward. Alex Smith is high risk, high reward. Smith can make more of the necessary throws and move the offense more consistently. The turnovers are brutal, but I’m hoping more time with the rest of the skill players will bring a bit more consistency.

by Fooch on Nov 11, 2009 11:24 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Smith has a stronger arm and more mobility. Hill was the more calm, leader, smart decision type of guy. Hill’s problem was that he wasn’t much of a downfield passer which gave us stacked line of scrimmage against the run…with not much threat of a deep ball. Smith has the ability to throw deep, but can be a little bit excitable, happy feet…some bad decisions and floating balls.

The way I look at it is this: Smith can fix what ails him. Hill can’t grow an arm.

running

what is the 49ers defense like against the run, will forte have over 100yds on thursday

by stepeo on Nov 11, 2009 12:54 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

rush defense

Well, the rush defense had been great up until the second half of Sunday’s game against the Titans. Chris Johnson was contained in the first half but had a huge second half, which was a big game-changer (that and Smith’s turnovers).

Generally though, the 49ers have a swarming rush defense that I would like to think can contain Matt Forte. Forte has struggled this season so I’d hope the 49ers rush defense can rebound. One thing to keep an eye on is the secondary’s performance in tackling Forte. The team lost Nate Clements a couple weeks ago and I consider him one of the best tackling CBs in the league. I think that hurt them last week against Tennessee.

by Fooch on Nov 11, 2009 11:26 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

It depends on how you choose to run the football

If you try to run up the gut you’re not going to get anything going.

I don’t know exactly how fast Forte is, but your best shot is to try to run outside.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

that and poor tackling on the edge, poor outside contain. I’m guessing Sing will have that part tuned up a bit but hopefully not to the point that we’re thinkign about the edge so much that we hesistate and allow inside runs to thrive.

I’m not expecting Forte to have one of his better games, no. CJ was the only 100yd. rusher we have had including Adrian Peterson, Michael Turner, Steve Slaton, Steven Jackson…

by Tre9er on Nov 11, 2009 1:04 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Forte

Hopefully the Bears continue to get him outside in the pass game as well. Our blocking inside has been bad, and it seems like they have shied their way out of running up the gut with frequency.

People who don’t care don’t respond, and people who do care do respond. Does that make sense Bronco fans trying to validate the trade?

How do you guys feel about Mike Singletary after the recent run of defeats?

Are the fans putting it down to lack of talent? Is his star still considered to be on the rise?

Singletary

I think most folks are still giving Singletary the benefit of the doubt. It’s easier for folks to blame Alex Smith, the offensive line, offensive coordinatory Jimmy Raye, and talent issues for much of the team’s struggles. Singletary has basically had the equivalent of one full season of games as head coach, so he’s definitely learning on the job. We’ve been running an approval rating and he’s still above 80%, and many of the folks who are voting no aren’t exactly off the Singletary bandwagon, but they’re more wavering.

Of course, if the team continues losing, I wouldn’t be surprised if more people start to doubt the magic of Singletary, whether it’s deserved or not.

by Fooch on Nov 11, 2009 11:31 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I’d like to see him do well, but at the same time I also harbour a fantasy that Lovie gets fired and Samurai Mike comes back to Chicago (we’re desperate, you’ll have noticed)… so I can’t decide which team I would rather see win on Thursday. Thanks for the response / this post in general!

Singletary to Chi

While I would love to see this also, not as head coach. I would rather see him as a D position coach and possibly move to a DC if good enough. Yet, I like Mike and hope he succeeds (just not against the Bears).

Not sure what 49ers fans feel but I think he made a poor choice in selecting his supporting cast of Coordinators from what I hear.

by TheMan1 on Nov 11, 2009 1:06 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

He went for continuity

Which is often overlooked, and was a HUGE problem with the Mike Nolan era. It’s better to have a good command of a bad offense than have no command of a “might be good” offense.

You have been DFiBrillated.

i would add

that we have loads of talent in some positions…but not others. For instance, O-Line, Pass Rushers, and to some extent, secondary (let’s be honest, we need some speed and range back there).

Davis's Mouth

You like his confidence or you think he is a fool for saying the 49ers will “destroy” the Bears D line?

by The Kaiser on Nov 11, 2009 6:46 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

He apologized for that (sort of) already

I actually like his confidence now, because he’s actually backing it up.
He’s been one of the best TEs in the NFL this season.

I like that he believes it

he just probably shouldn’t have said it.

However, you’ll not find many TE’s better overall than VD. Exceptional blocker, phenomenal receiver…he’s finally living up to his potential and calming down a little.

Davis

With Vernon we take the good with the bad. He’s slowly gotten his mental act together while turning into a big time receiving threat, finally. I like the confidence but I don’t think he needs to be telling the whole world.

Hester

The 49ers could really use a dynamic return man. I really like him as a return man and think he is turning into a solid enough receiver as well. What are your guys thoughts on Hester at this point?

by Fooch on Nov 11, 2009 11:33 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Surprisingly decent WR.

His getting his groove back in the PR game, and has made some remarkable catches from Cutler. He’s dropped a couple as well, but I think most people are pleasantly surprised at how effective he has been this year.

He's turned into a good route-runner as well

Some fundlementals to go along with all that speed. I’d like to see Turner call some more drag patterns to get him out in space more.

Johnny Knox

Before last year’s draft I considered him DHB but with ball skills (he’s only like .01 seconds slower right?)

Good thing Al Davis was too inept to see that.

I'm going to say Cutler

I know he’s a little wild, but he’s a talented QB that you have to account for. We can’t necessarily say that about our guys right now. I think Sing could tame him a bit too.

If so, who’s the best DB to exploit?

DBs

The 49ers are rolling out Shawntae Spencer, Tarell Brown and Dre Bly, with Bly as the nickel back. At this point Dre Bly might be the guy to pick on. He’s getting old and struggles from time to time, even though he remains as aggressive as ever. Spencer has had some inconsistencies but is playing fairly well. Tarell Brown was inserted into the starting lineup a couple weeks ago against the Colts and hasn’t looked back, in large part because of the season-ending injury to Nate Clements. I’d expect the Bears to start by picking on Brown until he shows he can handle things on his side every down.

how many yards will gore have against us. i would say about 80- 100 yards, forte will have more receiving than rushing

by stepeo on Nov 12, 2009 12:12 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Gore

Gore is a tough prediction because he has had some games where he can’t do anything and finishes with 30 or 40 rushing yards, followed up by games where one or two long rushes make up a big chunk of his yards. I’m hoping for big numbers under the prime time lights, so why not go with 140 just to be a little saucy.

by Fooch on Nov 12, 2009 12:30 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Unfortunately,

against our D-line this year, that is less saucy than it might have been in years past.

I haven’t seen any 9ers games since Crabtree has gotten on the field. Has he made any noticeable run after catch yards?

by Fridge72 on Nov 12, 2009 10:54 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Which Gore shows up ?

The guy that averages less than a yard a carry or 5+ ? I wasn’t entirely sure about the outcome of this game until Vernon Davis did the job. Thanks Vernon. That won’t come back and bite you on the ass, I’m sure Briggs will take it easy on you.

Any chance you guys would give us Patrick Willis for … I don’t know … anybody ?

Heard you guys have a good secondary, but guys like Kellen Davis are always open (6’7) and Greg Olsen when he decides to play like a man. Tommie Harris will be so pumped, Alex Brown should have a field day with Staley out. It’ll be a long day for Smith no matter what.

Gore

I honestly don’t know at this point. I think he’ll have a solid performance. Given how few carries he had, he was rather solid last week without having a single huge run to pad his stats. But given that he’s been up and down to date, it’s almost impossible to predict at this point.

As for Olsen, he could very well have a solid game. Good tight ends have been doing fairly well against the 49ers, so I definitely am concerned about Olsen. Maybe more than another weapon on the Bears offense.

What do you think has made Crabtree’s transition fairly smooth after missing TC and some games early on?

Crabtree

I think he’s showing how talented he really is. He didn’t have a playbook in hand during his holdout so even with the bye week, it was impressive that he got down a set # of plays so quickly. Now it’s a matter of him building on his chemistry with Alex Smith.
