Breaking News: Harris Not Suspended Per League Source
Tommie Harris is clear to play Thursday, according to this article. He was ejected on the 4th play of the game this past Sunday after punching Deuce Lutui.
The NFL might fine Harris, but there will be no suspension for punching Cardinals guard Deuce Lutui in the helmet, according to a league source.
We'll see how the team responds.

Why should he be.
I see scuffles like that all the time, cheap or not, even before games. And he was already suspended for 1 game in a way by getting kicked out of the Arizona game.

If a player punches another,
they do not need to be on the football field. Had Tommie not missed essentially the entire game anyhow, I would hope that the league or the team would have suspended him for a game.
This is a professional sport, played by the most gifted and talented players in the world. If one of those players does not have the self-control to keep from punching someone on the friggin field, they have no business playing.

Even though I agree with you, but....
As a bears fan I really wouldn’t want him suspended I believe he is an essential part of our defense and contributes a lot.

This stuff happens ALL the time.
I mean seriously how many times do you see players running out of the TV screen to go brake up some fight, most of the time the networks dont even bother showing it, cause they are soo frequent. Yea it was most definitely a sh*tty thing to do, but at the same time those O Lineman dont need our sympathy, they admit themselves to doing cheap things all the time. I hear Golic say it all the time, its not what you do, its what you can get away with.
Look at the Eye Gouging incident in Florida, even the RB that got his eye gouged was saying he shouldnt be suspended AT ALL. Now I realize that the Florida Linebacker whose name is alluding me right now took himself out of the entire game to limit the distraction. But if the RB who got his eye gouged is even admitting to worse things happening underneath piles, than that should show you how football players go about their business. So I guess if you dont see it that makes it OK, but when Tommie is STUPID enough to do it right in front of the ref thats when we should crucify him. Dont be soo naive to think that this kind of act isnt happening in every game.
Like last year when Youngblood or Trueblood or whatever that linemans name was from Tampa that was slamming our players head in the ground and Tillman went over to have his teammates back and punched him in the back, look who gets the penalty, Tillman, so who really cares in the end. And I dont believe the Lineman from Tampa was suspended.
Was it an egregious act yes, was it the first time in NFL history NO, will it be the last, absolutely not. In fact I hope the same thing happens to Vernon Davis this week, only this time I hope its not in front of the refs and at the bottom of some pile. And you know how much could a punch to a HELMET seriously hurt, if anything Tommies hand probably hurts more I mean how dumb, yea lets swing on a full caged helmet, his hand didnt even touch his face and then ensued the dramatics from the Lutui.

I agree
What he did was not that bad and I am sure it happens all the time in piles and etc . . . Tommie was just mindless enough to do it in the middle of the field, not in a pile, and right in front of the ref.
Is there ANY chance this motivates him? Any chance at all? I sure hope so.

We just disagree on this.
Sure, the “hypothetical” punches and gougings happen all the time in scrums and behind the scenes, but the crap Tommie pulled was, imo, beyond that. As Dane said, it’s a professional, albeit violent, sport and sucker punching someone isn’t part of the game.

And on top of that,
with the dozens of cameras on the field at all times, it’s hard to imagine that punches get throw with any frequency. Yes, a lot does go on in those piles, but it’s not like in high school where things are easily hidden. There’re always eyes everywhere.

And I'm pretty sure,
that a ref would throw a flag if he saw something like what Tommie did happen in a scrum. I highly doubt that officials just turn a blind eye because there’s a loose ball.

Really? He punched a guy in the HELMET. Odds are Harris’s fist hurt more than Lutui did. I guess that makes Harris even more of an idiot, though.

Never understood
why fighting is accepted in hockey. Its not like its a necessary part of the game. I think that’s why I’ve never really gotten into hockey and I think that’s why the NFL has to take throwing a punch seriously. It takes away from the dignity of the game.

I'm not sure
how frequent it is, but punching a facemask/helmet is a no-no and should be punished. With that said, I won’t be sad when I see him out there playing. Their defense has been horrendous without him.

Harris should be suspended. If not by the NFL, then the Bears should do the honors.

Talent always comes first in sports.
You want the best on your team. Sure there are instances when you come across total morons, Pacman for example. But, if you have a guy with pro bowl potential and slight character issues you gotta take that chance. Some of these guys have three strikes coming out of college, Those are who you steer clear of.

really, it was nothing. Tommies got caught the other guy who started it didn’t & youi guys want him out of town so next year you can b*t%H and cary how he is tearing through the league for another team. I'll attempt to decipher the drivel.
I’ve played quite a few “downs of football” before, and if I would have done what Tommie did in Pop Warner or in High School, the coaches would’ve kicked me off the team. You don’t sucker punch a player like that in football, at any level, regardless of provocation.
I’m not calling for his head. I’m simply stating that I will support whatever punishment is handed to Harris, either from the league or from the team. If Lovie sits Tommie and we lose because of it (which is a stupid opinion some have) then I will still stand behind our Coach’s decision. If he plays him, fine, whatever.
And if Tommie gets cut next year and goes on to prosper for another NFL team, good for him. I don’t fault the Bears for cutting ties with Benson, which I’m assuming is your reference point, it was the right decision at the time. And if the Bears decide to do the same with Harris, I will again stick by their decision. Because I am positive they know more about Tommie’s situation than the average back seat driver.

Mr. Smudgers
We are saying close to the same thing. In H.S. & little league, of course you’re kicked out the game. In the pro, I don’t know, I’ve seen way too many things simalar and even worse & nobody was ejected. As for Benson, I agree the damage here was done and it was not going to work out. That being said you saw enough flashes when he was here to know if he was in a situation he liked, he would do fine.
Heres the problem, our fan base does not think for themselves, they allow the media to tell them how to think. The same media that has a job to sell papers or get ratings to get sponsors. Take a second and think people, yea he has not performed how we would like the past year or so(even though the stats say otherwise) but this is something completely new for him to do. So instead of saying he lost his mind, think of what might have caused this. Yea Tommie is the kind of guy to say “hey a punch here would be fun” and do it! As I said, based off of his history at OU and here with the beloved Bear, I’m sure he was provoked (no, this doesn’t mean its ok what he did) and the guy is human.

A wise person will always seek to educate themselves, and not allow their own opinions to be derived from hollow sources.
The premise of your statement, I reckon, could potentially have merit, but when you choose to lump an entire group of people into a category, albeit, a group of people that you have never met in your life… any credibility that you may have attempted to have is gone out the window.

I won't argue
the fan base comment, since Dane’s already touched on it.
After reading through your post, multiple times to piece together your rambling, I have taken from it the three random points (that I believe) you are trying to make:
1) Sucker punching people in the face is okay in professional football, because similar instances have taken place and people have gotten away with it.
Rebuttal: This “point” is so absurd, I don’t even know how to argue it. I guess I will try to lay it out in the simplest of terms.
If my sister stole a piece of candy from the convenience store, does it make it okay for me to, as well? No, of course it does not. What Tommie did was wrong, whether it was the NFL or flag football in the backyard.
The NFL has advanced, or digressed (if that’s how you see it), and punching people is not tolerated like it used to. These players know the rules of the NFL and they also know that the Commissioner has led with a heavy hand.
2) Although the fans “think” that Tommie’s been performing poorly, the “stats say otherwise.”
Rebuttal: 2009 major stats – 8 games, 0 sacks, 8 tackles, 1 interception, $7 million (+) earned
My only other argument against this is, who cares about what his stats are, for the sake of the suspension? If Lance Briggs had punched someone who was lay on the ground, my opinion of supporting Lovie’s or the the league’s decision would not change. (But maybe, that’s because I think for myself!)
My overall stance on this is that because player x sucker punched player y, in the face, while laying down, player x deserves what he gets.
3) Tommie doesn’t have a track record of punching people, so Lutui must have provoked him.
Rebuttal: So what? In football – nay, in life – you are only accountable for your own actions. There are dirty players all throughout football, there are some on our team (I’m sure), but players don’t typically react how Tommie did.
You wanna know how to get back at Lutui, you beat his a** on the next play and sack his effin’ quarterback. You only hurt your team by reacting the way Harris did.
I don’t have time to re-read this to check for clarity since I’m running late, so I hope it makes some sense. And please, you don’t have to call me “mister.”
