Outside Looking In...
This is even hard to watch for an outside of the box fan of another team in the division (it really doesn't matter what team). I looked at the Chicago roster in the pre-season and saw some elite talent, but also a lot of holes and virtually no depth. I must say, I am pleasantly surprised for you in the production of your rookie class, both Knox and Afalava(sp?) have been solid producers, with both being in the conversation for stal of the draft. My question to the Bears Faithful: Where do you go?? You have a young, franchise QB, a promising young RB and a breakout young TE, but your other pieces are either aging quickly, injured or not blowing the world away at their given positions (please understand that there is no disrespect intended)
I, for one, was hoping for the NFC North junkyard dog fight that the media had us anticipating coming into the season, but the only team that is performing where I thought they would is Detroit, with MN being a game or so better and both GB and Chi a game or three worse... I also have to say that I'm not that surprised to see any of these 4 teams where they are right now, especially given the injuries for the Bears.
With that said, I'd like to get back to that question I asked: Play armchair GM for me over the next 3 years and give me a best case scenario on how you would use the current draft picks you have and maybe pepper in some free agency, but please try and be realistic; I am seriously curious as to how Chicago restores order and becomes a legit threat again.

sign Julius Peppers day one of free agency.
Wrestle Aaron Kampman away from GB, since he’s more effective with his hand on the ground.
figure out someway to beg, borrow, steal an offensive lineman worth a sh*t in FA, and draft some 2 and 3 years from now.
when we get our 1st rdrs back, find the replacement for Urlacher, and a good FS, or at that time, trade for Taylor Mays…pending his progress.
get rid of : any corner not named TIllman(his replacement must also be found)
get rid of: any FS/DB experiment at any other position, call a bust a bust.
Manning? see ya
Afalava – maybe a good backup
Graham/Bowman – nope, Bowman has talent, but won’t stay healthy
LB core…Briggs….Urlacher till he’s done. Roach sucks and i don’t care what anyone says, so do Williams and HH.
DL – goodbye, we have okay starters, but we need superstars, to be a Chicago Defense

I Am Convinced
We need to terminate Ron Turner like it was Yesterday. We then need to find a good Offensive mind out there to finish up the Season. Unfortunately the window is closing as this weekend was similar to a mini Bye and would have given us 10 days to install the new Offense.

Knox and Afalava are solid producers ?!!
WTF ? Johnny Knox catches 2 passes a game ! Afalava is strong safety on one of the worst secondaries in the NFL !!!

Coaches
We have decent players.
Being real, Lovie has a 11 million dollar contract that the McCaskeys will not eat. So that leaves us needing an OC and a DC. Lovie has tried this year making the defense playcalls and failed.
We need to get rid of the worn out, everyone can exploit, Tampa 2. Get a DC and fire Ron Turner on OC. Bring in guys with fire and talent. For the Tampa 2 to work you need a certain personnel and #1 we don’t have it and #2 like you said the depth, we don’t have it. The at best it is still a decent system and must be ran close to flawlessly.
For players, we will need to make some FA moves. Will Jerry Angelo do that – ? We all know his drafting skills are pathetic at best.

Lovie Smith = Tampa 2
I’ll become a Packer fan if i see lovie coaching the bears employing something other than the Tampa-2. it’s his defense, he won’t abandon it.

That, my friend, is the $64,000 question ……
