Remember a time before Jay?
Before the trade for Cutler the big debate was whether or not to draft a WR or OL with the #18 pick. Sure getting Jay was nice and all, but aside from Jay the organization has done nothing to improve itself. We are still in virtually the same position we were before the trade, only with more holes and less opportunities to improve (ie no draft picks).
I like Jay, but the notion that we don't need actual receivers (any receiver will do at this point) because Jay will make our crap ones into gold needs to be retired. A guy who can catch will help a bad QB more than a QB who can throw will help a guy who cannot catch. Brandon Marshall alone has made neckbeard look good.
For years management has focused on defense in the draft. Not only is it now becoming apparent they didn't even do that well as this D is turrible, but also the neglect and/or ineptitude the front office has shown in acquiring skill/position players continues to haunt. Maybe a healthy #54 would have made the D so good that the team could overcome the absence of a solid receiver and/or a lineman who can block... Jay or no Jay this team is basically the '05 squad with bad replacements for anybody who has left since then and no fresh talent to offset aging.

Let's face it...
this team needs a serious overhaul. I’ll live with a few interceptions from a guy who is trying to win. It’s the lack of focus and discipline from the other 10 guys that gets to me. Imagine if Olsen played hard for the entire game? Or the line blocked at all? Or if any WR could get separation? Or Forte would just run to the area where the defenders were not at? Or Turner would not call 2TE sets on the goal line and go 4 wide and run Cutler? How about a few counter plays; or a run to the outside with the 2 fastest guys on the field? Maybe Knox could get 2-3 yards on 3rd and 2 if he just outran the CB to the corner? IMO, there are talent upgrades necessary to move forward, but the coaches have simply lost this team. I think the Bears just need to see what talent is buried on this roster, get a better coaching staff, and prepare for next year.

all good ideas
what kills me is the undisciplined sloppy bs…all the penalties and poor technique/tackling etc.
lack of talent is one thing but da team is showing their ass, warts and all, week in and week out with the lack of discipline. it’s like ice skating uphill

i usually dont comment on lovie's lack of emotion,
but penalties seem to be one area where players are more likely to respond to an emotive coach.

So,
how’s the Cutler trade looking now? I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, Cutler is good, but not a franchise QB.

he's our franchise qb

Not the trade that pisses me off
it is the apparent complacency that the organization fell into once it got Jay. I always liked Orton and it is not lost on me that we would have likely beaten GB and SF with Orton at the helm. Nonetheless, I’m happy with Jay as our Franchise QB. Like it or not it takes more than half a season for a QB to master a system.

Jay Cutler has less interceptions
than John Elway and Peyton Manning after their first three seasons in the NFL.
You clearly know not of what you speak.

yeah i don't understand
the 05 team…was pretty damn good… so this is basically like the 84-86 team, but with bad replacements

Team comparisons
are exactly what I am not doing. I’m not saying this team is like the ’05 team, it IS the ’05 team. What I am doing is looking at the roster from ’05/superbowl team to the one we have now. What I see when i do this is that this team is the ’05 team, but while every other team has spent the last 5 years improving in all aspects of the game, this team has added Jay Cutler. It is one thing to try to keep the window of the 2005 season open, another to do nothing to prop it open.
Lance- check. Urlacher – check. Tommie – check. Other than those 3 (who are not immune to the effects of aging), Jay, and maybe some DLs there is not a position on our current roster that has improved since the super bowl team, considerable debate over TJ v Forte.

We've just drafted very, very poorly
And it’s starting to catch up with us. Remember or 2nd round pick (in ‘07, I believe) , Dan Bazuin? What ever happened to the third rounder, Mike Okwo? Are these guys even still in the NFL? Angelo has drafted some bombs over the years, and we really haven’t been able to replace the aging talent (Mike Brown, etc.) with younger players who can come in and get it done.

true
but its more than just drafting the wrong guy, it is wrong headed. Bazuin and Okwo… a DE and a LB. Both those positions are and were strengths. Bad enough to draft and miss, but even if those guys were decent picks they still wouldn’t address the glaring holes on this team. Its not only that those guys sucked, but they never should have been drafted as our obvious need are and were WR and OL.

LBs and DEs
Good point. It seems like we draft at least an LB and a D-lineman every year.
Enough is enough with the LBs already! Though, I’m not sure any part of our D-line is a strength.
I’d like to see the guys we draft get a chance (especially since our season is pretty much over at this point). Gilbert time??

I'd really like to see Gilbert
especially at DE to see if he is a viable replacement if we lose Wale to free agency. In addition I’d like to know if they are considering moving Chris Williams back to LT. Unfortunately other that those 2 guys there really is no young talent or fresh blood hidden anywhere on this roster. Upsets me though when I see guys like Ty Law and Mike Brown playing for other teams. (not to mention Darren Sharper who could have been had in free agency. not to mention he was the qb of the viking D for a long time.)
re the season being over: I don’t really care about how we do in a particular season. I care more about the direction of the team. Right now it is in a tailspin. Regardless of what the standings say at the end of the season redemption can still be had, at least for the guys who suit up. All i ask for is consistent pride, effort and discipline. Those are sore aspects of this franchise that are missing, that is on the coaches. the lack of talent is on the McCaskeys.

I concur
Gilbert needs to play at least 20 snaps a game so Lovie can adequately evaluate him for next season. Same goes with DJ Moore, Aroma, and Gaines. If Pace continues to show why he’s too old and feable to play anymore, shift Williams to LT and fill Omi in at RT. Next year is the future of this team- play hard and develop some continuity in order to hit stride in ’10.

Don't fret. Although you may not have draft picks, you still can trade for WRs and Olinemen.
Even Denver might be able to help you all out there. We have excess linemen and WRs. I’m sure that McD wouldn’t mind parting with a few of them this offseason if he was offered the right deal.
So, don’t worry about having draft picks. You could be just as well off if you trade for proven talent as you would be drafting unknown NFL talent.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.
