NightLink: Can the Bears Still "Salvage the Season"?

Wcg_thumb_link_medium
We all know that teams will have mandatory "diplomacy" rules when speaking to the media, but sometimes it can be entertaining to hear what they are saying.

Tommie Harris:

"We have to win out," said defensive tackle Tommie Harris. "We have no room to get any more losses. If you lose again, you’re going to be hoping that another team loses for you to get in. You don’t want to be in that position. We were in that position last year. It’s basically in our hands right now."

Star-divide

When Lovie Smith was asked what message he delivered to his players, he said:

"Just continue to keep playing hard. Stay focused. Keep believing in this team."

Okay, so maybe Lovie isn't exactly shooting for the stars there, but I laughed when Larry Mayer said:

The Bears hope that following that sound advice will help them snap a two-game losing streak.

Look, I know that it can be tough sometimes to put the right words together, or to try and spin something the right way when writing an article.  And no doubt, Lovie Smith is not going to provide you with a lot of insightful sound bytes... but still, Larry, you made me LOL.

Okay, moving on to some more quotes...

Lovie:

"Can we still make the playoffs?" Smith asked rhetorically. "We have five losses. Five losses don’t keep you out of anything. Our players realize that. It’s a big game coming up. We realize the position we’re in right now. There’s not a lot of room for error. That’s why we’re back on the practice field today."

Coach, do you honestly think this team has the talent to make the playoffs?  Do you honestly think this team would have a chance to win in the playoffs?  Do you honestly think that... well, it doesn't matter.  One game at a time, huh coach?  That's good enough for me I guess.  At this point, I have no reason to expect anything different anyhow.

ugh

I suppose what made me feel the most disappointed was the news that John Gruden will be back with ESPN next year and not coaching the Bears.

by ClawsClawsClaws on Nov 16, 2009 6:41 PM CST reply actions

what has gruden ever done?

he won with dungys players its a know fact. want proof? what did he do after that win?
i think we keep lovie but bring in a new off coordinator. who? i have no idea because people get fired and become available you never know…..

by Bear Lovin 21 on Nov 16, 2009 7:15 PM CST up reply actions

Well said

I suppose I just want a coach in his mold. Someone who is a little more fire and brimstone, or just a hard-ass. Someone more like Mike Tomlin…I like him.

by ClawsClawsClaws on Nov 16, 2009 7:21 PM CST up reply actions

there we go man

i agree i love guys like tomlin mcdaniels and hell even raheem morris in tampa the guys that are so open about their passion is makes you pumped as well. im not saying because lovie is calm hes less of coach because he is one of the more succesfull coaches in terms of wins around. but i see what you mean. i would love to us bring in bob ryan from cleveland and maybe a guy who can run offense with some consistency and creativity

by Bear Lovin 21 on Nov 16, 2009 7:23 PM CST up reply actions

i agree

bob ryan would be a good fit for the bears. he is passionate and can get mediocre players and personnel fired up.

You think that

Him and Jay can get along? If so I would like him.He was a good D coordinator

by T.Moore on Nov 17, 2009 7:28 AM CST up reply actions

This sums up my feelings on it

Jauron, Wanny, Lovie
Meek, calm, quiet, milktoast coaches, all of them…

Super Bowl wins: ZERO

Ditka, Gruden, Cowher, Coughlin, etc.
Hard-ast, old-school, ball-breaking, fiery tempered and passionate coaches…

Super Bowl wins: YES.

To me, we’ve had a long enough run of the calm, collected “nice guy” coaches—it’s time to try a fiery arse-kicker again!!

THAT"S what I want next time around.

by Amishbear on Nov 17, 2009 10:59 AM CST up reply actions

What did Gruden do?

Well just like you started off, he took Dungy’s half of a team, and gave them the other half. Don’t forget that it was Gruden’s system in Oakland that made Rich Gannon MVP material, and Brad Johnson look like a real NFL QB in Tampa. Gruden did for Tampa what Dungy couldn’t. Callahan took Gruden’s Raider’s to the superbowl. So does he get credit for that? I am so tired of the Gruden took Dungy’s team to the SB. Dungy couldn’t take them there and he had 7 years to.

Why does Dungy get credit for lynch, Sapp, and Brooks? Those were GM McKay’s picks. Talk about the Tampa 2, dominant in Tampa under Dungy. Did that translate to Indy? No, they had one season of a good defense in 2006 and that’s it. What’s the difference there? Monte Kiffin. Dungy wasn’t a great head coach. Good but no where near great.

Not saying that Gruden is amazing, but don’t buy into the whole Dungy is a great coach and that Gruden sucks.

by GtM on Nov 17, 2009 12:28 AM CST up reply actions

are you kidding me!!

Gruden is the ultimate, he coined this phrase:

“This guy… he leads the league in grit!”

"Hey, the offensive linemen are the biggest guys on the field, they're bigger than everybody else, and that's what make them the biggest guys on the field." -Madden

No

No, we can NOT savalge the season.

The best thing we can do know is to play our young, untested players to see if any of them are worth keeping around. That includes shufffling the O-line around to see if some different configuartions might work better.

I would take satisfaction in beating the Vikings twice; however, that seems like a pipe dream.

by MakeHalasProud on Nov 16, 2009 7:07 PM CST reply actions

Forget about it.

Barring an unbelievable turn of events, we can’t slavage the season.

Some people are just too optimistic.

by GouldisGold on Nov 16, 2009 7:18 PM CST reply actions

YES we can salvage.....but will we? i hope so

damn people! we are 4-5 not 0-9! the bears have played mediocre at best for most quarters then turn it up late. i think jay becomes more of a……….MANAGER for the rest of the year even he hates throwing picks beleive it or not. why play young players? even if we dont make the playoffs guys like olsen hester bennet and knox can only benefit from playing with cutler……but i do agree a guy like aromashadushould get a shot. and maybe they find a o line combo that works.
philly is a winable game and with us being at home it should give us a edge. minesota twice and baltimore are what really worry me. but i have a gut feeling we steal the one thats in solider field.
Bear down
packers rams and lions are very winnable.

observations

Yes, the Bears can salvage the season – but define what you mean by “salvage”.
If you mean playoffs – no.
If you mean trying to work out problems and outlining needs for next year – yes.
Bears are in a deep hole organization-wise and it will take a lot of thought and work to build things back up. A lot will depend on what the McCaskeys decide to do

Lovie understands
We realize the position we’re in right now.

No one could possibly be that optimistic about the rest of the season.

We were in that position last year. It’s basically in our hands right now.

Didn’t the Bears hold their own destiny going into the last game of the year last season? Not only does Tommie not get the physical aspect of the game, but also the mental side as well.

I’m an eternal optimist when it comes to the Bears, but there’s no way in hell they beat the Vikings twice.

For future reference, Mael

Here is the info, including the spelling:

“Aloysius Snuffleupagus, more commonly known as Mr. Snuffleupagus or Snuffy, is one of the Muppet characters on the long-running educational television program for young children, Sesame Street. He resembles a woolly mammoth, without tusks or (visible) ears, and has a long thick pointed tail, similar in shape to that of a dinosaur or other reptile. He has long thick brown hair and a nose that drags along the ground. He is a friend of Big Bird and has a baby sister named Alice. He also attends Snufflegarten.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aloysius_Snuffleupagus

Who knew his first name was Aloysius?!?

by Amishbear on Nov 17, 2009 3:09 PM CST up reply actions

vs.

Snuffy is a stereotypical hillbilly. He lives in a shack, makes moonshine, is in constant trouble with the sheriff and is very shiftless, occasionally doing a small amount of farm work but primarily working his still and loafing. He also has some proclivity toward stealing chickens, which led to a brief but effective use of his character in a marketing campaign by the Tyson Foods corporation in the early 1980s.

He is very short, wears a broad-brimmed felt hat almost as tall as he is, has a scraggly mustache and wears a pair of tattered, poorly patched overalls. He constantly cheats at poker and checkers. His speech is ungrammatical in the extreme. In fact, almost all of the characters in the strip (except of course for the occasional visiting “flatlander”) have been stereotypical hillbillies – sharp-tongued gossipy women such as his wife Loweezy (Louisa); his baby Tater; his nephew Jughaid (Jughead); his neighbors Elviney and Lukey (Lucas Ebenezer);1 the sanctimonious (but nonetheless ungrammatical) Parson; Silas, the owner of the General Store; the ostentatiously badged Sheriff Tait and others. Vehicles were rundown jalopies of a seeming 1920s vintage, even in the 1970s and beyond.

My first thought

when I read that was the exact same thing…yes, other teams had to lose to give us our chance in week 17, but there we were, knowing all we had to do was beat the Texans, and we were in…
ABSOLUTELY the Bears controlled their own fate last year.

What’s more tragic is that a few weeks out, I almost KNEW what would happen:
We’d get the wins we needed (GB and N.O), but then choke when we faced a hot Texans team.
Ugh.

Now that I’ve ripped that old scab off, I can bo back to exploring my fresher wounds… :-)

Define salvage the season

Ok, let’s dream for a few minutes. This coming Sunday, the football Gods start shining a light on the Bears. Brett Favre is injured and out for the season. The Bears then beat the Eagles and win six of their last seven games to finish 10-6. We end up as a wild card in the playoffs. Just what does that change? Out of the 22 starting players on our roster, only two at best are among the better players at their respective positions in the NFL. Briggs and Urlacher. We still have question marks everywhere you look and many holes to fill throughout the roster. The PR department at Halas Hall goes to work full time and sells the story that the Bears are close, just like last year. Jerry, Lovie, Ron, and the gang all get high fives for a job well done from Michael and Virginia. The season is salvaged, but nothing has changed. The Bears’ as a franchise still are unable to evaluate, draft, and develop talented football players. Imo, nothing will change for the better long term, until the cancer that has ruined our franchise is removed. That would be Jerry Angelo and Ted Phillips.

My point? Not much.

Except for, while you are busy knowing the roster, you are including Urlacher as a Bears starter.

And please don’t get pissy with me… you’ve talked plenty of sh*t about the Bears for “not knowing how awesome Orton was”, and celebrated the Broncos for getting him… so, I know right now may be a difficult time for you.

by Amishbear on Nov 17, 2009 11:46 AM CST up reply actions

Before yesterday I would have said no

But basically every single team ahead of us in the Wild Card chase lost. We are only one game out of the playoffs right now! Yes, there are a lot of teams we have to leap, but there are seven games left.

Now, of course, we have to start improving our play significantly, but that would be true in any “salvage the season” scenario. Right now we are in a lot better position than I would have thought. I am not giving up yet.

big question

we need a super streak of wins. how? when we stunk big time against the niners. some one somewhere on that sideline needs to get them emotionally fired up,but theres no-one there.

by stepeo on Nov 17, 2009 12:25 AM CST up reply actions

salvagable?

if we somehow miraculously become an average pass-blocking team and a slightly above average defense, i suppose its possible to make the playoffs, but that probably means nobody gets fired. and in the long run (or even next year), to keep most of these overmatched coaches and players around will hurt our team.

by guy incognito on Nov 16, 2009 11:06 PM CST reply actions

I stated this before

and it hurts to say it, but I really dont want to think that they make the playoffs, only to get spanked and bounced out. Lets bow out gracefully (well, as graceful as 8-8 or 6-10 can be) and just enjoy the postseason without any false hopes and bullsh** drama. Just end the season with some dignity, pretending to care about the season, and play like you have a heart. Then just enjoy the great teams in this league while sipping on your mai tais in hawaii or Brazil, where ever overpaid, underskilled athletes go for summer vacation.

Eat. Sleep. Pray. Watch chicago play.

looking at the rest of the season…unless the bears step it up they might come away with 2 more wins…….i think that if the redskins do fire Zorn then the bears should hire him as offensive coordinator…

by bearsfan87 on Nov 17, 2009 12:07 AM CST reply actions

You must be high

You want to have Jim Zorn as the OC? The Redskins offense is a whole lot worse than the Bears offense is. The Redskins offense is ranked 24th overall while the Bears are 18th. If that was the case we might as well keep Ron Turner, and we all know how great of a job he has done.

Question for all the over optimistic homers!!!

What in the name of Dick Butkus have you all seen from this team that makes you think they can go 7-0 or 6-1 the rest of the way and make the playoffs? What? Please, elighten us!!

Do you think that this offensive line is suddenly going to start blocking like the early 90s Cowboys?

Do you think this defense is going to figure out how to stop an offense not named the Cleveland Browns? Because let’s face it, that’s the only offense this D has dominated.

I hope to Mike Ditka that the Bears do win out and make the playoffs. But Walter Payton, what the hell have they shown me this year that makes me think they can actually do it?

by McRipper on Nov 17, 2009 8:47 AM CST reply actions

Until it's a mathematical certainty,

I will ALWAYS hope, ALWYS believe there’s a “chance”.

The Bears have been playing a shell game this year:

The are nowhere to be found for the first half of a game, then come to life.
OR, the offense is moving the ball well and socring, but the defense has disappeared.
OR, like in the last game, the defense shows up, but the offense sputters.

I still hope/believe that SOME of our problems are fixable.

For example, all the penalties are a matter of discipline. That can, theoretically, be fixed.
The issues in the red zone COULD improve, if Turner starts showing a little creativity, or if Cutler over-rides him and rolls out.
At the least, I expect Cutler to play a little more conservatively in the red zone, and we settle for more FGs. Fine.
Captain Obvious says: Points are better than turnovers (no points).

Besides the penalties and red zone play, the biggest factor that will have to change is the the DEFENSE.
They need to show up for each and every game. We know they CAN do it, if sufficiently motivated and inspired.
And if the defense plays well, well, then, theoretically, we are in every game. Every game becomes winnable.

That’s the key: the defense needs to show up.

As for the o-line: I’ve pretty much given up on the run game for this year, but using Forte in the short passing game is the next best thing. A close approximation. Not the same clock chewing, punsihing morale destroyer that a good running game is, but it could suffice.
Our o-line actually looked good blocking downfield for Forte. We need to do a whole helluva a lot more of that.

Special teams still has a lot of talent and potential. One or two big plays—something from Knox, Manning or Hester—could decide a game. We need a couple before the year is through.

Now, about the games:

Philly is not that great. They lost to the Raiders. Westbrook’s likely out, and we’re at home. However, the fact that it’s a primetime night game does frighten me, given our recent history. But McNabb is fallible. They face a little adversity on the road, and it could be over. Pressure. Pressure is key. Rod’s boys better bring their A game.

But it’s winnable. Can’t say it enough: We need the defense to show up and pressure McNab.
In the last two meetings, we beat them by offense (Orton’s beautiful 98 yard drive in 2 minutes), then by defense (the gorgeous goal line stand).

Both those things should be hung in the Louvre, cause they’re works of freakin’ art.

Maybe we can go for the trifecta and beat them with Special Teams this time?! :-)

Jay and the offense SHOULD be motivated, after letting everyone down in SF.

We should be motivated for GB, too. And our recent history against Favre is good, although he’s playing at a higher level. But Minny has it’s weaknesses, too. The secondary, for one. Special teams—punting/coverage. APs fumbilitis.
Records can go out the window in divisional match-ups.

Maybe we’ll catch a lucky break with an injury? (Or, more likely with Miniscorta—a suspension…haha).

If we can at least take ONE of those games (at home?), I’ll be happy.
(Damm, I HATE the BiQueens…)

Ravens have been faltering lately. They looked below average against Cleveland last night. If they are edged out of the playoff scene by week 16, we may get an uninspired team.

So, I think it’s poosible. I’m a roaring, raging, blind stupid homer, I admit…but it could be done.

To summarize, 5 steps for playoff hope:

1. Defense has to show up, again, and STAY there. If both sides of the ball play the way they have already shown they can (in flashes this year), in the same game, we can compete with any team.

2. Eliminate/reduce the penalties and turnovers. Those two are huge. Both can be traced back to discipline (and coaching). Cutler has to reign himself in a bit.

3. Smarten up the offense—use Forte in the short passing game, roll Cutler out. Get more creative in the red zone especially. Attack the middle of the field w/ the TEs.

4. Need a few big plays from Special Teams, at key moments.

5. Catch a few lucky breaks within the NFC race…have a few of other potential Wildcarders slip (ATL’s heading in the wrong direction, SF is shaky), maybe an injury or two to key players…

At the least, I’d like to beat GB and Minny once. At the least salvage a little dignity, if not the entire season. I don’t want a whole season of divisonal foes having bragging rights about sweeping us. That’s the LEAST I’m hoping for, anyway.

BEAR DOWN.
