Taking a stroll around the interwebs this afternoon...

The Detroit Lions signed DeAngelo Smith (DB) off the Bears practice squad.  He was then replaced by DE Joe Clermond, who is seeing his second or third stint on the practice squad with the Bears.

Andy Reid thinks that Bears ST coach Dave Toub would make a good NFL HC.

Olin Kreutz sidelined for the second straight practice.

And Brad Biggs tweets that Jay Cutler would like to see more of Devin Aromashodu during games.

Cutler's weekly press conference... good seeing him able to laugh a bit. (Helmet-tip to pierzynskirules)

Practice Squad Defensive Ends?

Awesome….can’t wait to watch that exciting development. Perhaps he’ll finally break through and can be added to the current list of 10 defensive lineman.

Yup. Our OL is by far the weakest link on our team

yet we have 900 friggin DL/ DBs. And still trading for more!

Haha, I just noticed this, too. Sorry.
“I think Dave Toub would be a great head coach down the road. I don’t think he needs to switch anything. I think there are a lot of head coaches in this league that would be good head coaches.”

I think there are several head coaches in this league that are terrible head coaches.

I know what he’s actually saying, but that quote just makes me giggle.

a lot of people think Reid is a terrible coach so i wonder why they are taking references from him….personally i dont think Reid is all too bad, just needs some help with time management…anyway i hope Devin Aromashodu does see some game time although its probably not going to happen…i thought he did pretty well in the preseason….be nice to get some rotation in the WR position, i feel like we still dont have a #1 yet….hester is nowhere close to being a #1….

by bearsfan87 on Nov 18, 2009 1:51 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I think you need to block out everything you hear from espn and radio and t.v.

And just watch the games with your own eyes. What about Devin Hester’s play this year has you believing he is not this team’s #1 receiver? He has made big catches, scored touchdowns, made key third down possesion catches, gets additional yards with max effort after the catch. Has downright torched people on touchdown grabs. Made a game winning 37 yard touchdown reception, and returns Punts for us.

What exactly does devin Hester have to do for people to accept him as a receiver..please someone enlighten me.

And don’t give me that crap about on any other team he would be a number 3…i am talking about the Bears.

I think it was funny when he was asked about the pass setting up the run.

He talked about how Andy Reid knows he’s got a passing team, then they ask him what kind of team are the Bears. Then a little grin followed by “Oh I don’t know…”
I wish he’d just SAY IT!!! After the pause look the camera dead in the eye (btw, what up with the hat over the face, kinda a Ricky Williams helmet thing(Not, repeat NOT reading body language!)) and say, “We SHOULD be a passing team, we are a passing team, but for some reason Coach Smith and Coach Turner can’t seem to get their collective heads around that concept. Next question?”

If you can't laugh at yourself you must not be very funny.

by Just Dave on Nov 18, 2009 7:42 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Meh...

Methinks the whole “running team” thing is just some sort of weird, iconoclastic meme that the old school football folks running our franchise refuse to let go of because… well, because “that’s the way it’s always been.”

And, that’s fine. At this point, it’s a moot argument. As long as our defense allows teams to score on every friggin possession, we’re going to have to throw the ball every damn play anyhow.

Once our defense decides to return, then our figureheads can return to arguing on what we are.

You are all gentlemen (and ladies) and good judges of cheap whiskey.

by Dane Noble on Nov 18, 2009 7:48 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree, and love any use of the word iconoclastic, but

If we would make efforts to disguise our runs and passes better by passing out of a run formation and vice versa and utilize our running back to the outside of formations where they have more success we might develop an identity on offense. We run up the gut and pass every time we show 3 wide or more. I know I keep hounding that but it drives me nuts.

If you can't laugh at yourself you must not be very funny.

by Just Dave on Nov 18, 2009 7:58 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Like I've iconoclastically said before,

we can all daydream about what would iconoclastically work better, or differently, but at the end of the iconoclastic day, we ain’t OCs, and our OL still sucks.

I’m sure Turner has a million things he’d like to do, but at the same time, you have to work within the limits of what you’ve got. And what we’ve got is all of the outside pieces put mostly together (QB, RB, TE, WR), and a big heap of fuming _ as an OL.

/Iconoclastic.

I wonder if it has anything to do with

him learning the system. Cutler said in the presser: “[It would be nice] if we can sprinkle him in, and keep building his confidence. We don’t want to overload him, but to get him in there in different situations…”

Hmmm… sprinkle him in… not overloading him…

From DA's profile the Bears site...

2008 SEASON: Spent most of the 2008 season on Washington’s practice squad… Inactive for three games for the Bears after being claimed to Chicago’s active roster.

So he’s been on our Active roster almost an entire year. How much more time does he need? They didn’t sprinkle in Knox.

by boondock_saint812 on Nov 18, 2009 5:47 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Part of it is probably related to learning.

He was on the 2008 practice squad—he probably wasn’t working on learning any systems in Washington as he was playing stand-in, that sort of thing.

As for our roster…who knows. Mike Hass was on the roster, and he never got his shot. Of course….we had an awesome receiving corp then (no, that’s a lie. I apologize) Many of us thought he should see the field at some point, but he just….didn’t.

Ultimately, I’m going to say it’s partially related to a slightly stubborn coaching team/front office, and partially due to him not being as quick to pick things up like Knox, who seems much more comfortable.

Adam Schefter Reporting Bills Reaching out to Shanahan

Let’s hope Shananhan waits to see if other jobs pop up after the season (Like the Bears?) before committing himself to one team…link

by GallopingGhost on Nov 18, 2009 2:55 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I seem to recall Shanahan saying...

that going somewhere in the middle of a season is no good for anybody. He wouldn’t start til next season, and I don’t think he’s at a point that he wants to do the complete rebuilding a team like Buffalo needs. That team has some problems all around the ball, and I think he’d rather go somewhere that at least has some better parts, and he can build around faster.

That said, I wouldn’t mind seeing him here, but it’s a long shot, I’d say, at best.

Practice squad signings...

If a team signs a player off another teams practice squad, doesn’t he have to be on the new team active roster?

I think the Bears should release Lance Louis. He’s just wasting a roster spot. Maybe it’s just me but I think he’s too small. Hell, if Beekman and Omiyale get pushed around what the hell’s Louis gonna do.

Personally these are some guys on other teams practice squads I’d like to see us go after…

Jason Shirley, G, 6-5 338 (Bengals)
Jaimie Thomas, G, 6-4 330 (Colts)
Alex Boone, T, 6-7 330 (49ers)

by boondock_saint812 on Nov 18, 2009 3:01 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

1- Yes.

2- Louis is a project, so I think they are hoping to see production next year. Angelo said that they could put Pisa on the IR and sign someone else to the roster spot, but if they can’t come in and contribute now, there is no point.

3- Good size in those guys…

2- I look forward to seeing Lance Louis line up as our starting FS next season. Lovie’ll work with him one on one.

3- Yes, ergo, we’ll never sign them.

Is Olin's back

causing him to not be able to snap the ball properly in the shotgun?

all kidding aside, why can’t he snap it? If I were Jay Cutler I’d hate ot have to pick the ball off my laces every time PLUS having to avoid a rush through our swiss cheese line.

by AGC on Nov 18, 2009 3:26 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

That's actually a pretty decent question.

But then, was it his back making him step on QB feet all the time?

I really wish he could get that down, but at the same time…once he started having problems, it seems that they should’ve PRACTICED UNTIL IT WAS FIXED.

It’s little things like this that make me worry during this coaching regime. I like Lovie Smith as a defensive mind, but damn, I seem some boneheaded things week in and week out. There doesn’t seem to be much accountability for those little things, especially when they’re done by the veterans. (The people who shouldn’t be doing them in the first place)

by Dane Noble on Nov 18, 2009 3:54 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I didn't word that very well.

I guess a lot of times, I’m not seeing it in reactions or improvements.

For example, Olin’s never been particularly great at the shotgun snap, and I don’t really seem to see much improvement in it. Old dogs, new tricks, it might be.

I do definitely see your point, though. Perhaps he’s getting dressed down for it in the locker room, or in practice. I don’t have any way of knowing that. Yet. Someday I’m pretty convinced they’ll call me like in that Whoopi Goldberg movie Eddie, where a fan gets to run the team.

I just don't get it

why is he so terrible at snapping the ball in the gun? You would think it’d only take one game where he consistently snapped it at the QB’s shins or shoes and it would get fixed.

This is a huge deal, and I’m not sure why no one in the media is commenting on it. Jiggets said 1 thing about it after the game on Thursday and that’s about all I’ve heard.

by AGC on Nov 18, 2009 4:15 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I thought I heard Doug and O'B talking about it once.

But I can’t be sure. They yell about a lot of stuff in a short period of time.

by KDoggers on Nov 18, 2009 4:16 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

My guess is because he’s smaller than most of the DT’s he’s facing, he’s trying to beat the defender to the POA. By doing that he’s coming out is his stance quicker, causing him to snap the ball low. That’s my opinion.

by boondock_saint812 on Nov 18, 2009 4:22 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That's a great point.

I hadn’t thought about that. I could definitely see that being the case. I would think, if he really is going to be that half second behind the guy, they’d want him to get the more accurate snap, and give Jay the better chance to make the play. But I’m not an offensive line coach.

Put people back where they belong

Put Chris Williams at his natural LT position and put Omiyale at RT. After the year is done, I say put Beekman in at center and draft a massive LG and/or try out Kreutz at LG. He may be better suited there because when he gets moving he still has good push just not directly after the snap. Maybe that idea is crazy but i’ve seen crazier this year.

Hey eveybody in the windy city!

I came over here to ask a question. Today I heard on ESPN radio that a bears fan was hurt by a Pittsburgh fan, in a bar, from drinking a beer that a Stooler fan bought him off a bet. What was said was, he almost died after drinking it and had suffered some brain damage and memory lose. He spiked his beer with something. Is this true and if it is, where can I find this story? Thanks
