Olin Kreutz or Beekman next year at Center?

                                         vs

So, we got to see Beekman in the game yesterday replacing the walking pile of failure known as Omiyale, he might be a decent LT, but that should hopefully be worthless to us as anything other than a backup since CW supposedly has a higher ceiling and is getting seasoned over at RT currently, and everyone can agree that Pace has looked abysmal and is getting replaced next year. So, since we saw Beekman replacing Omiyale and looking pretty good, I was thinking it only makes since to pace over the reins to Beekman at center and let him start making his mark in the league at his natural position. If anything his play at guard should give hope for a lot of improvement on the line with him at center.

Anyone disagree that Beekman should be the starting center next year?

Beekman is a couple of years from being a decent starter in the NFL.

I don't know...

Next year will be year four, and he’s looked pretty good as a right guard which means his blocking is there. Are you worried about the exchanges?

His size, strength, and technique worry me.

He is young, so he has time to learn and develop, but I just don’t think Beekman is a long-term answer for our OL.

*winces*

Kreutz must scare you senseless if size is an issue since Beekers got about 15lbs on Kreutz at the same height.

I kid, I kid. I just think his blocking technique is some of the better technique on the field at the moment, he actually looks good more often than not at RG. Granted, there is a bit more finesss as a center in regards to knowing who to chip and such, but with the 3-4 really becoming the main defense around the league, it’s a lot more of a find the NT and block.

Kreutz is a tough SOB, and intelligent to boot,

so his size has never been a big issue. And I’m not saying that Beekman won’t develop… he’s just not there yet, and didn’t show much improvement during last year. He was just sort of who he was for 16 games.

he sucks!

Kreutz is done and if people keep telling me about his size I’m going to explode!

he has left the building…

Since when is 310 lbs small for a C?

IMO he’s an instant upgrade in the middle.

I'm a Beeker supporter...

But to me, the most attractive “other” option is A.Q. Shipley who is currently sitting on the Pittsburg practice squad.

Need some help

What does Kreutz’s contract look like? Years remaining?

by rdent4hof on Nov 2, 2009 10:19 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

He will get $2.33 million for 2009

and $2.33 million for 2010.

Free agent in 2011.

Thanx

I’d like him to play out his contract… And that’s it. (Future O-line coach?) I’d be happy with that!

I hate saying this, but he has been on the decline the last couple of years… continued into this year. With that said, He’s still the best option for now.

I’m not sold on Beekman being the heir apparent… Maybe he is, maybe he isn’t.

IMO, they’ve got a year and a half to figure it out… I would like to see what Lance Louis could do at center.

He has to go after this year

He has hit the wall a.k.a John Tait style. I am not sure if beekman is the snaswer or not but we have to move on from Kreutz if we ever hope to run the ball again..

If you want the running game to stall

than sure, let’s let him play out his contract. There’s zero push on runs up the middle, and he’s now the main culprit. Garza is a good blocker, and Beekman showed in training camp (from what I read from numerous sources) that his technique was light years ahead of Omiyale.

I feel you...

And you might be right guys… But until I see some more games without Ole’ in the lineup… I’m stickin’ to my guns and Kreutz.

When you’ve got someone next to you on the O-line that sucks ass… I think most lineman would tend to worry about two responsibilities, theirs and the suck ass’…

This year

I agree he should stay, because the ramifications of him not “leading” out there would be overwhelming for the offense.

honestly

it depends on FA and draft. plus, i won’t be surprised if we trade a few players (cough cough kreutz vasher cough cough) for some draft picks since we’re a little low.

And the vikings put in an inexperienced new center

for birk this year and he is doing fine. Cut the cord and move on because he is the main cog as to our poor run game this year.

Something like this next year...

CW/DraftorSchafferorLewis/Beekman/Garza/DraftOrShafferorLewis

Basically we’re going to have to pick up one starting Olineman in the draft no matter what, I’d rather not need to rely on two.

Don't forget free-agency

JA will undoubtedly sign a veteran to a contract at RT or G. That’s definitely his MO as far as offensive linemen.

and then playing them

somewhere they don’t belong… for once this year, i hope we sign a guard, and play him at guard.

Funny

Every team wants versatile linemen, JA is no exception. I think this time around he gets a true mauler-type of guard, and then slides Omiyale over to RT.

reluctantly go with beekman

I’ve said for a couple of years that Kreutz was getting a bye from the media over some poor play, based on his past rep. I like him, but his time has come and gone.

The Bears were right to bring in Omiyale for size

because our O-line is terribly under-sized. Omiyale should be getting seasoned at tackle right now instead of wasting a season on Pace who will not be able to sustain another season in the NFL. But money talks and that is how we roll in Chicago. Our line is atrocious. I don’t believe Beekman is the answer for Olin’s replacement and we have no 1st or 2nd pick until 2011. Not to mention, Beekman is a natural guard everybody! If the Bears want to win, they’re going to need to shell out some money and make a big splash in free agency this offseason and we all know how reluctant they are to do that. This is what bothers me about people who own the team and have no passion. Do they really think we can win a Super Bowl with the current personnel? I think Virginia is more concerned with what time Matlock is on and where she can get a good prune compared to what she can do with this team to make it a serious contender. F*ck the McCaskey’s.

Unfortunately we now see

That Pace (with all due respect to his past achievements) got cut by the Rams for a reason. Talk about a bad team…

And no, the McCaskeys are not football people at all. They obviously suck! I wish they would just sell the team to someone who actually cares about delivering a winner to the fans.

Kreutz is done

Yes, we all love Kreutz. But let’s face it, the guy hasn’t even snapped the ball well for the past few years. He’s a major culprit in our inability to run up the middle.

He does have a great head fake though.

And he’s really good at the tackling thing.

This could be the 2010 O-line:

LT Williams
LG Omiyale
C Beekman
RG Garza
RT Shaffer

The thought of that is scary. LUWAWL!

Substitute

Shaffer with Omiyale at RT, and a draftee or FA signee at LG.

Beekman now

Kreutz is a shadow of what he once was. A combo of Beekman at C and Omiyale at LG has the possibility of getting better with playing time.

Omifail

sucked so bad at Guard during the offseason, he was moved from LG back to Tackle after one day. then back to Guard with much to do, after the Pace signing, another Lovie cover up if i’ve ever seen one.
If Omiyale ends up at Guard, we are screwed and Cutler and the running game will continue to suffer for it.
Omi needs time to develop yes… but at Tackle, not guard. hell, Cutler would probably get better at Safety in the NFL if we put him back there, he played in High School… why not try it out?

I agree

Guards and Centers can be interchangable, hell even a good Guard could play tackle effectively, but tackles, even good ones (which Omiyale really wasn’t), still aren’t very good guards. It’s just a different position.

by Cosmis on Nov 2, 2009 6:39 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Well it seems like

we are in the “everybody wins” league,
Gee Nathan Vasher, sure is #1 in nice guy category, can we keep him???… but me, i’d take Albert Haynesworth and his face stomping anyday, as long as he helps wins games.

this whole, experiment random players at random positions thing, needs to stop, admit we didnt think Pace would suck, nor did we think he’d be available, so we signed Omiyale to play RT, even though we really believed St Clair would resign with us, and Williams was supposed to take over LT.
but we overpaid Omiyale so we had to play him, and stuck him at Guard, and he sucks at Guard, who knew?

Kreutz is all used up. Hate to say that, but it’s true.

Agreed

That’s why I would rather Beekman take over the center duties and leave Omiyale at LG. I agree with others who say Omiyale belongs at RT (with Williams moving to LT), but I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

As far as I'm concerned

Our attempts to “upgrade” the line through free agency this year have proven to be an absolute failure. Like most of you, I was very optimistic this spring when I saw Angelo go out and sign Shaffer, Omiyale and Pace. I was completely ecstatic when he landed Cutler. But now it almost appears that the line is WORSE than it was last year. With all of the free agent signings, I didn’t think that was possible.

The Bears need to create more competition at basically every position on the line (with the possible exceptions of Garza and Williams). And that includes the center position. That means they need to really do a better job of researching who might might be available in the middle rounds and start targeting potential O-lineman.

Does anyone know if any stud O-lineman will become free agents after this year? Because that could be the big key to the teams’ (and Cutlers’) success next year.

depends if we can get a quality center or guard

Either way, I would prefer that the team parts ways with Olin. Beekman is pretty good, especially by the standard set by this line. A few posts dog on him, but he looks like a solid lineman to me. Then again, average looks good on this line. I want to see Omiyale at his natural position before I decide on his value. If he looks average or better on the right, then keep him. He has good size, just zero push … its one of those things that seems more like strength and tenacity more than technique, so I’m not sure he’ll ever be a guard, but I’m just not super savvy on the nuances of line play. If Omaliye sucks than thats a hard number of holes to fill in one offseason … sigh. I wish I didn’t have to cheer for a team that is so incomplete every year :( I know I don’t but you know what I mean …
