Free Agent To Be Offensive Linemen

The CBA negotiations have a lot to do with what can and can't happen in next year's free agency, but assuming the status quo, here is a breakdown of who will be available and a write-up on the top guys: LINK

A sample:

Jahri Evans, New Orleans Saints (26)
Jahri Evans is continuing to grade out as the team’s best run-blocking linemen week after week. The Saints have done a nice job of efficiently running the ball through the middle and on the right side of the line. His continual high level of play and positive, team-first attitude should translate to a high-end offensive guard contract at year’s end. Expect the Saints, who have nothing but positive things to say towards Evans, to richly reward him for his hard work and production.

The top guys won't really be available; they'll get franchised or will sign with their current teams.  But of the 2nd-tier guys, is there anyone who knows anything about them?  Who can the Bears' get?  Who should they target?

I believe Marcus McNeil will be a free agent at the end of the season.

hmm

I rather like McNeill. He seems to be a good signing.

by Cosmis on Nov 2, 2009 5:44 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I highly doubt...

the chargers won’t resign McNeil.

by Jhitt81 on Nov 3, 2009 10:04 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

He’s from Chicago, too.

Guard is the way to go

I kind of like Justice, but I think Omiyale will be shifted to RT next season. I’d like to get Mankins or try to steal Colledge from the Cheese.

Mankins!

FTW!!!

Getting Evans

would be awesome. but the saints are gonna lock him up, guaranteed. if not a long term deal, than the franchise tag.

plus, i doubt management would shell out the cash for him.

Mankins or Kuper

And while I know it’s gonna be unpopular, I think we’ll keep Pace, Williams and Kreutz at their current positions for one more year.

+1

Please let me know if I can help.

I can't see Pace sticking around

He has to know he’s nearly done, he should retire after this year.

by Lester A. Wiltfong Jr. on Nov 3, 2009 1:53 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Probably should...

But then again, I’m sure it’s gotta be hard to actually admit that your career is over. While a lot of people feel he is, Pace might not think he’s done just yet.

Yup, I agree with that.

And it’s weird to see your name there instead of Geaux…

If you could make $1.5 million playing a game for 8 months out of the year

Would you walk away?

Bengals released a back up lineman today

Article

In the linked article from CincyJungle, it says Kooistra was a solid backup Tackle and Guard

thats what we need

another backup o-lineman…

by GtM on Nov 5, 2009 1:48 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

If we move our current backups into starting roles...

We’ll need new backups to take their place. Beekman may have been a backup two weeks ago but in another 2 weeks I think he’ll be our best o lineman. Long term the bears have both a talent and depth problem unless they are pretty agressive about adding quality bodies to the o line.

Extreme makeover is in order

Pace and Kreutz absolutely have to be gone because both are absolutely terrible at this point. Omiyale isn’t going to be cured of his suckitude by a move to tackle either. Williams is another wasted 1st round pick, but given all the other necessary changeover he almost has to stay put at starting tackle.

So that leaves Garza, Williams and three gigantic big fat holes to fill. The salary cap is about to go the way of the dinosaur, so I guess we get to see whether the McCaskets and Angelo will outbid the world for two quality offensive lineman from whatever the free agent pool winds up being. I’m not holding my breath. One, most good lineman will be signed to extensions by their current teams in a cap-free world. Two, the McCaskets will doubtful have an appetite to get into the salary escalation wars that are sure to take place in the new NFL.

declaring Williams a wasted pick

is just stupid. Way too soon for that kind of nonsense, but I should consider the source.

I would have rather seen us grab Otah, instead of Williams

But, yes, it’s way too early to say we wasted a pick on him. Give him at least a full season before giving him some sort of a grade.

The Bears wanted a LT not a RT

Williams was a highly regarded LT while Otah was seen as a likely RT.

If the CBA doesn't get extended and we enter a no cap year...

teams will get to use both a Franchise Tag AND a Transition Tag to keep their guys. Plus, you will need 6 years of service to hit the open market instead of 4. These two points will keep most, if not all, of the free agent quality linemen with their current teams. The only way the Bears can improve their line is through the draft (not likely since they have no 1st or 2nd round pick) or if a miracle does happen and the CBA does get redone or extended.

Maybe...

we could get another year or 2 out of Kreutz if we moved him to a guard position.

by Jhitt81 on Nov 3, 2009 10:10 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

That would make a very bad situation worse.

Why would moving him to guard extend his career?
