Jay Cutler

I have read through many of the posts on this fine site.  And like many of you, I have voiced my displeasure, or downright hatred of the current state of affairs.  The O-line has played horribly.  There is no running game.  Forte is hopping and dancing, but getting nowhere fast.  The defense has not performed well, although it has been affected by injuries.  The coaching staff sucks.  I could go on and on, but my main concern is Jay Cutler.  I do believe he is a talented athlete.  I'm not sure he is a "franchise" quarterback, but he is the best prospect we've had in a long time.  It appears to me, and by no means am I an expert, Cutler's mechanics are way off.  His feet move too much while in the pocket, even with no true rush coming at him.  He throws off his back foot.  I've heard many of you say and mention some of the same things, but my question is, HOW WILL IT GET FIXED?  I don't believe the coaching staff can fix it.  I'm not sure Jay will have the mentality to fix it.  Then what?  His confidence is shot.  How does he get it back?  Will he get it back, or are we stuck with shell of the quarterback we traded everything and the kitchen sink for?  The o-line is not something that can be fixed in an instance.  Jay could receive a career ending injury, or have a nervous breakdown before that could ever get fixed.  Is he damaged goods?  Will he ever be successful here?  With no draft picks and no real coaching staff it appears that he is a lame duck quarterback.  Itmakes it look like effort was given to better the offense, but he was not given any other tools to compete with.  I know thisa is just a ramble, but I'd be interested in what the rest of you would have to say on this matter.

Cutler will be fine...

he has all of the physical and mental tools to be a very successful franchise QB. He is playing not to make mistakes at this point, and I fully believe he is the only reason the Bears have won 4 games this season. Imagine for a second, Kyle Orton, with this o-line. If you are disappointed in Cutler, you would have been disgusted by Orton. The single biggest failure of Lovie Smith is his ability to evaluate coaching talent. Other than Dave Toub(sp.), every coordinator and position coach is HORRIBLE. They cannot develop the mediocre talent JA has given them. So that leaves 2 options, new coaches or new players. The former is easier, IMO. This team truly does lack talent, both players and coaches. I don’t say that to disparage the Bears, but because I expect better. Cutler is one of a scant few players that is any good at his position on this team. We, as fans, need to focus our attention on all of the other positions that are failing, not Cutler.

I couldn't agree more!!!

I debated you in the past, and I stated that it was not time to pile on the coaches. I stated that it would depend on weather or not this team shows any improvement, and I am only seeing regression across the board.

I have stood staunch in my support for Lovie and company, but now I too say they need to go. I actually do think that there is a lot of talent on this team, but we are seeing no development and no growth. There are just far too many mistakes and missed assignments for this not to fall on the coaching.

good post

Culter is not the solution by himself, but he is the biggest part of the ultimate solution. QB is the hardest position to fill as Bears’ fans should know better than most.

I will quibble with "every position coach"

Bob Babich has actually done a very solid job with the linebackers. He had to have played some role in Briggs’ development, and this year he’s managed to mitigate the loss of Urlacher.

A QB coach

who creates drills for his faults with mechanics and forces him to do it day in and day out. Let’s hire Jim Miller, former Bear QB, as our QB coach. Go read his “15 on 6” blog at csnchicago.com. He likes to drill him each week on his mechanics and fundamentals, as a former Bear QB and obvious Chicago supporter he’d be an interesting candidate.

I like the cut of your jib sir...

To a person, on this Bears team, everyone need to step up and do what it takes to improve their contribution to the success of the team. From Cutler to Urlacher to JA and Lovie!

Cutler's current problems are all offensive line related at the moment.

I may end up writing something about it, but if you go down the line, hurried/bad footwork, lack of progression, putting too much on the throws, etc, it all stems from the offensive line letting him get blown up more often than not if he has the ball longer than three seconds.

i agree with a comment

Sure it’s the O line but the root cause of a horrible O line is bad choices, bad personnel moves, bad coaching (coaching = motivation, training, preparation). I no longer have confidence that the O line ( and other team problems) can be fixed by the current coaching staff. It’s only a matter of time before the players tune out the coaching staff and then we will be toast.

I think you are giving Lovie et al too much credit. BTW, is your avatar a pic of the elephant man?

I probably am giving Lovie too much credit, you’re right.
That be the elephant man, yes. It’s a little known fact that he was an avid football fan, and in fact was an all pro middle linebacker at one time.

Did the offensive line

force him to throw to Olsen with triple and double coverage? Did they also tell him not to check down and hit the WR with single-coverage? Last night he had the most time I’ve seen all year; it wasn’t the O-line’s fault that he overthrew Knox and Hester on sure TD passes.

Good Questions Chad

Statement: I think that given the current state of things that if the thing with Cutler isn’t turned around in a timely manner that he could end up being the next incarnation of Jeff George. I don’t think anyone really wants to risk that.
How do we fix it?: Coaching change. Pep Hamilton and Turner must go. I don’t think Lovie Smith will be gone this year unless the Bears screw the pooch for the rest of the season and lose every remaining game. (this is a distinct possibility, albeit unlikely – i am afraid to say) Then I’d say the odds are 50-50 that Lovie might be induced to leave.
Conclusion: IF Lovie and his posse were shown the door, I would be in favor of Shanahan or Cowher stepping in and laying down the law, getting things to rights.

we need to accept

Jay is going to be here for the long haul. Look at the amount of time and f’ups management allowed Grossman to have, they owe Jay that much at least and they only gave up one pick for Grossman.

Jay’s got issues, and I think he jumped into the frying pan before working out all those issues. Seems like Denver’s approach during the Shanahan regime was to use kid gloves with him and before he got a chance to be a big boy, he was shipped to Chicago and stuck right into the bright lights as the savior of a team at a position which had been lacking in talent since arguably the 40s. There are a lot of factors at play here, and I’m not sure which can be fixed.

I think Shanahan is the best fit to fix our issues, not just from an offense point of view, but from a Cutler handling point of view. From the begining of his time in Denver, Shanny protected Cutler and they seemed to have a good relationship. I don’t like that we need to cajole and hand hold our star QB, but if thats what it takes, fine by me.

I wouldn't mind

a combo of Holmgren (GM) and Gruden (HC). A nice set of offensive minds to help him develop into a good QB.

but people seem to forget we will need a new defensive coordinator as well.

That would be the easy part

Look around the league at all the former HCs back at what they do best- coordinating a defense.

Cutler has always had those type of mechanics.

Even in Denver. He’s no different now than he was then, except for the quality of his O-Line & WR’s.

The problem with Jay is this. He was Shanahan’s boy. Shanahan personally scouted Jay before the 2006 draft. He never talked to Jay. At all. He never went to work him out. He never told anyone in the building (owner, FO people, coaches) that he was in love with Jay until the day before the draft.

He made a draft day trade and got his man. The fact that the Broncos didn’t go to the playoffs with Cutler is probably due more to their terrible defense than to Jay and the offense.

Coming to Chicago he was viewed as the savior. The missing piece. The problem with that is that it’s then kind of hard to then criticize the Golden Boy.

The best thing for Jay is to be reunited with Shanahan next year as his new head coach. Jay is Shanny’s boy. Make no mistake about it.

The next best thing is to have a new regime come in with excellent offense coaches (QB, OC) to help maximize his considerable skills.

The worst thing is another year with this failed coaching staff.

Funny how we all have our own theories

on why Cutler has sucked this year. We just need to accept the fact that he just kind of sucks. He had all kinds of advantages in Denver. He had a good O-line, good recievers, and he played half his games a mile above sea level, thus allowing him to throw further.

and if we had the option to do the trade for cutler in the offseason i would do it in a heartbeat. He isnt having a good season, but who said he isnt having a good career. Next year he will show every damn person that he was brought to chicago to be the leader. I gaurantee everybody bears will win 2 or more super bowls with jay.

Classy Move by McNabb

It was touching to see McNabb watching Cutler just oblivious after the game and getting booed. Reporters swarming about Jay and it was like he was in "Zombie Land". He wasn’t avoiding press. Just in total shock.
McNabb spots him and you hear him say "Jay. Come here."
Pulling him away from everyone you could see McNabb spending a lot of time encouraging him. Jay was like a young son who just crashed his old mans car as Donovan kept talking to him. Cutler was just listening with a "Yes Sir" sort of attitude.
To see Donovan reach out to the kid and hug him and then see Jay hug him back was far from the token handshake.
Now, I hate the Eagles and the Bears…nuff said, I am a Vikings fan. But that moment was something every father with a young football fan should have recorded and shown his kid. The macho stuff goes so far. It is moments like that that just make glad to know there are still competitors that have a heart.
If Jay took it in, he will always remember that moment.I think it will.
Jay is a good young QB. The missing picks might hurt but focus on O-line bargains. (Loadholt is doing fine for us) Your gonna have to hit WR in free agency hard. Remember, Jay had Marshall and his chemistry with him and Royal were great. Get a good one to work beside Knox and Hester and you will see Jay be as good as he is.
It took us 3 years to fill holes and I’m sure with the right moves the “Monsters” will be back putting fear into the division.
Too bad ya couldn’t have grabbed Bobby Wade. Not great but a guy who comes to play every day.
I really don’t dislike ya’ll. I love Chicago and spent a lot of time there when I stayed with my relatives in Kenosha.
I love to see our division stay tough.
Good luck and hang in there.

All good things ........

Cutler has gone from over-confident to no-confidence this season. The overthrows – I counted 4 or 5 really long overthrows – were more than just overthrows. They were statements. He’s terrified of throwing interceptions now and the drunken Chicago ‘fans’ that booed him are idiots. THEY are ruining his mind-set. He’s s****-shocked. He’s relying on Olsen too much, expecting him to make catches when the guy is just not a very good receiver – has anyone seen him dive for a ball yet ? If you don’t dropit on the money he doesn’t want to know. There were 3 clear TDs in the overthrows.Any single one of them being thrown by a happy Cutler and we’re all excited about the playoffs right now. As it turns out we have a 7% (historically) of making them. Quite apart from the frankly embarrassing idiocy of Turner’s “offense”, Cutler had the tools to overcome the suicidal play-calling, but just hadn’t got the confidence to be zen-like in his passing – he’s thinking too much now instead of just trusting himself. I’ve never seen overthrows as long as that. He’s crushed, you can see it in his face every time he walks off the field. It seems like there is no one in the organization who has his back, he needs to talk to a sports psychologist because Pep Hamilton is not and has never done his job well. He’s young. He’s got the tools. McMahon didn’t have the tools, but made up for it with self-confidence and moxie.

I’d love to know what McNabb said to him. I wouldn’t be surprised if apart from the confidence-boosting he said "Look, Turner’s a joke, you know it, everybody knows it, he’ll be gone – don’t worry. Just keep your mouth shut or you’ll get crucified.

ENOUGH is ENOUGH! JAY SHOULD BE BENCHED!

Cutler’s confidence is soo low that now he’s throwing over/under and plenty of errant passes. I think time to bench him a few games to get his act together & give him abraek to get his confidence, technique & head together. At the start of the season, he was doing too much; then the interceptions and now the overcautious and lack of confident throws that are being picked off in every game. It’s like here we go again…in the end zone!
