Change (A Formula We Believe In)

This is definitely not what I envisioned, I normally have a pretty good gauge on my Chicago Bears but this year has  gone completely the other way on me.  Ive been beating down mentally and I have had some time to think to myself about exactly what went wrong with this team.  What a disappointment for everyone players, coaches and fans alike, it seems like a century ago when we were 3-1 coming off a bye fighting for the division.  And I have come to the conclusion that it is time for an overhaul of the entire coaching staff.

Star-divide

You just cannot put this on Angelo, he made the moves in the offseason necessary to give the Bears a fighting chance.  Angelo goes out gets the franchise quarterback that this team has sorely needed for decades, he makes moves to add depth to the O Line and linebacking core and he also does a pretty good job in the draft even without having a pick in the first 2 rounds.  No it was the coaching staff that has let this team go down in flames.  Yes there has been a fair amount of injuries that has undoubtedly held this team back, but every team has those same problems and you have to be able to find a way to plug through them and it just hasn't happened.

When you look at the progression of this team over the season, they have gotten progressively worse, how does something like that happen.  In my opinion its about the adjustments or lack there of that this coaching staff has refused to make.  In every sport you have to be able to make adjustments on the fly and those adjustments are what separates the good teams from the bad.  A perfect example of these poor adjustments is our defense on 3rd Down, this is something I have been screaming about for the last 2 years.  I even felt soo strongly about it that I went to the Expo this year and voiced to Bob Babich and Lovie Smith that I felt that a change needed to be made, but what do I know.  I mean seriously don't you just love it when its 3rd and 5 and our corners are not only are playing 10 yards off but are backpedaling as well after the snap, yea that makes a whole lot of sense.  And this has been a continuing problem for over 30 games now.

Another problem this year has been the lack of adjustments with play calling on offense.  Did I seriously hear Chris Collinsworth say that Turner and Lovie told him that they will run the ball even if its NOT successful.  That kind of archaic and stubborn thinking is what is dooming this franchise.  This is not 1965 anymore, you're not "thrilling the nation with your T formation" anymore more like Boring the nation.  No, you call the plays according to the what the defense shows you on the field.  There is absolutely no creativity whatsoever with these guys.  Is it really that hard to maybe run a 4 man spread put Forte in the backfield do some no huddle and catch a team off guard.  If you did do something like that maybe by forcing a team to go Nickel or Dime that might open up some things for Forte, at least try it.  Why do they insist on doing the same plays that have been unsuccessful week in and week out for the last 10 weeks.

So this is my solution, goodbye Lovie, goodbye Turner.  This is not the veteran team that needs coaches that are going to pat them on the back and make excuses for them.  This is not a team that needs a coach that is going to give that stoic look on the sidelines after the 4th holding penalty in 5 minutes.  This is a young team that needs a coach that is going to challenge them, show anger and ask for accountability when they don't make the plays expected of them, plain and simple.

As far as personnel on defense, the biggest need in my opinion has to be at Safety, the coaches really screwed this one up with this turnstile that they have created at this position from Graham, to Manning, to Payne, to Afalava, back to Manning, to Vasher, back to Afalava.  There just has been absolutely no consistency and when you don't have that how do you expect to get results.  So what you do is you MUST go out and get someone to fill one of those voids and let the others compete for the other position.  With Urlacher coming back, hopefully healthy, there isn't much to be done with the Linebackers.

As far as how the D Line has fared, they have improved from last year but have been somewhat inconsistent.  Ogunleye is probably out the door and I'm not really sure what their plan is for Anderson, I cant imagine him costing too much considering his decline since his rookie year but if they have to let him go so be it.  And as much as Ive heard people complain about the Gaines Adams move I don't mind it, lets give Marinelli a chance in the offseason to get him right, hes still very young and has proven in the past that he can be a force.  DT has got to be the biggest concern on the line and Angelo has gotta get tricky to improve this area.  I'm not quite sure what to expect from Gilbert considering we havent seen him all season, maybe now is a good time to take a look at him.  I know that management is high on Harrison but I think that if there was someone in FA that can make an impact that wasn't too costly that is the route I would take.  I know you are going to cringe but I believe Tommie will be back next season.  If anything they need to hire a personal motivator for this guy, cause in the past to weeks after getting kicked out of the game hes actually been playing like he has a pair.

Offensively my dream solution is going out and hiring Mike Holmgren or my second option Mike Shanahan (preferably Holmgren) followed shortly by signing the recently disgruntled Bronco Brandon Marshall once he takes off for the Free Agent market.  I know I have been a big proponent of our current WRs and I still am but if we did indeed bring in Holmgren and his West Coast Offense that would mean more 4 WR sets and with Hester, Bennett and Knox that could make for one of the deadliest passing attacks in football.  And its time we catch up to the 21st century and PASS to set up the RUN.  Matt Forte is not Walter Payton hes not going to put this team on his back like Peterson did for the Vikings last year.  And my O Line has Pace on the Bench and putting Williams at LT, where he belongs, and putting Omiyale at RT his natural position, I like what I have seen from Beekman his job better still be there for him next year.

Granted this is ALL hypothetical but lets think about it for a second.  Just look at Brett Favres whole career.  Look at the coaches they surrounded him with like Head Coach Mike Holmgren and assistants like Andy Reid, Steve Marriuci and Jon Gruden.  The only way we are going to get the most out of the cornerstone of this franchise in Jay Cutler is if we surround him with the coaches that can do exactly that.  This is not a polished QB that we have this is a QB that is still very raw and has all the tools to be great.  But he needs coaches that are going to get on him, challenge him, and drill in his head the things that they have worked on with him all season long.  No more back patting.

I can recall on NFL Network a sitdown they had with the Holmgren coaching tree and they would talk about how hard it was to coach Farve and reel him in from that gunslinger mentality, not completely eliminate but tone it down.  They would talk about the frustration that Holmgren had at times with him but these were coaches that demanded accountability and were not afraid to show their displeasure when he wouldn't execute what they had practiced on with him.  And in that sitdown they showed footage of Brett and his coaches on the sidelines doing exactly that, having arguments, disagreements, and working on correcting them and making in game ADJUSTMENTS.  We have gotta find a way to corral this Wild Stallion and turn him into a Thoroughbred and all it takes is some good coaching and from what I have seen this year we are lacking in that area.

From what I understand the Bears have a lot of room under the cap, I don't know the exact numbers, but whoever is making the moves needs to finish the job that was started the day we traded for Cutler, this cant be a half ass job or we are just going to be the same 8-8 team or worse that we are this year.  Go out get that Coach that will get the most out his players, get that Safety, get Brandon Marshall do what it takes to win a Championship.  The Giants won the Super Bowl two years ago, last year they didn't and in the offseason I think they set a record in moves at least it seemed like it, so if they can attempt to get major improvement why not the Bears.  I don't want to see us take another step back next year like we have every year since our Super Bowl appearance and to do that these things need to happen.

BEAR DOWN.

I think you’re confusing the two safety positions with just one. AA has been the starting SS for the entire year, and D. Manning has been the starting FS for the entire year except the first game (Payne). I don’t have much of a problem with either of them, cause Lovie constantly stunted Manning’s development at safety.

I completely agree on Holmgren being brought in in some capacity. I like the idea of combining Holmgren as GM, and Gruden as HC. It’s going to take a strong-minded coach to get Jay back on track. Not a loser like Turner, who hasn’t won anything as a coach at any level.

I know that they are two different positions but I was just speaking of both in General.

We havent had a clearcut mainstay since camp at either position.

It all went like this.

I didnt want to go into detail but I just want you to know that I am definitely not confused. They started out with Graham at FS and Payne at SS that was the first idea in OTAs. Cause they wanted Manning to stay in the Nickel where he is best suited. Then during camp where you really learn the X and Os of a position they had Afalava at FS and Payne SS where he had played last year. Then they suddenly moved Manning back to FS and Payne to SS until Manning had some nagging injuries, that moved Afalava back to FS unitl the Giants game I believe in the Preseason and thats when they flip flopped the two moving Afalava to SS and Payne to FS. Then Payne gets burned one time in the Green Bay game, granted it was the wrong time to get burned, and they immediately pull the plug on him and move Manning back to FS, making Payne a waste of space on our bench and I never thought he was that bad in the first place, they even found some way to put Vasher back at safety too. Absolutely no grip on this defensive secondary whatesoever.

Payne

he’s really that bad at FS. He doesn’t have the range needed, nor does he tackle very well.

I don’t think AA was ever at FS, but I’ll take your word for it.

That sounds about right,

Manning seems to be getting better with the experience, don’t really like his tackling though. Most of our DB’s would look a lot better if our D-line was generating a consistent pass rush.

As far as the Safety positions go, Looks like we are a team rich in SS’s but going to need to improve at FS.

by Fridge72 on Nov 24, 2009 7:11 AM CST up reply actions

I would agree with that.

I wonder what type of FS are going to be available.

Yea and it wasnt a bad move. He does have the 3rd most victories of any Bears HC and he and Ditka are the only two to get to a Super Bowl.

But his ways are wearing and its time for a change.

Dude, your comment is excessive and unneccesary.

The return button is not your friend. This season is not on Angelo. The guy did bring in guys that he thought would be significant upgrades. Our O-line has been upgraded prior to last season and if you don’t think that then your nuts, adding Pace was the bad decision because he is clearly over the hill and forced guys to play unnatural positions and where they won’t be in 2010. An O-line needs time to establish and gel over time, playing guys in unnatural positions and then having to swap them around the next season only hurts us in the long run; the only reason we had a better running game last season is because that group had been together for awhile. He brought in a franchise QB who I am glad to have and everyone else should be, brought in a legitimate LB to our strong side and drafted Afalava and Knox who have played good football this season. I guarantee you had no problem with the moves he made prior to when the injuries piled on and when the O-line wouldn’t get in a rhythm but now you can complain about his moves. By the way, he never said once that Angelo was the man at drafting, he said he set us up for this season and I agree. Angelo doesn’t call plays and thus doesn’t make this team one-dimensional, bitch about the coaches for that one. If you actually think about how many of his draft picks are successful players in the NFL, I’d say he can draft pretty well. Just because a lot of those picks aren’t playing with the Bears doesn’t mean they aren’t play makers on other NFL teams and I see plenty on that list. We can’t develop talent, that’s our problem.

And..

The Bears NEVER drafted Colin Brown. They drafted both Johnny Knox and Marcus Freeman in the 5th round. If your going to go on such a monumental rant, getting your facts straight wouldn’t hurt.

Most Colorful Defensive Background

when people bring up these drafts, i see bobby gray and it makes me remember back when our defensive backfield had

Bobby Gray,

Mike Green,

Mike Brown.

it wasn’t great back there, but it was colorful, which was pretty neat in its own right,, i think we should go back to that.

if we arent going to draft good players lets at least draft ones with fun names, or names that coordinate with each other!

Soooooo.................

Marc Columbo, Alex Brown, Adrian Peterson, Rex Grossman, Charles Tillman, Lance Briggs, Todd Johnson, Ian Scott, Bobby Wade, Justin Gage, Tommie Harris, Tank Johnson, Bernard Berrian, Nate Vasher, Daniel Manning, Devin Hester, Jamar Williams, Mark Anderson, Greg Olsen, Garrett Wolfe, Josh Beekman, Kevin Payne, Corey Graham, Trumain McBride, Cedrick Benson, Kyle Orton, Chris Harris, Chris Williams, Matt Forte, Marcus Harrison, Craig Steltz, Zach Bowman, Kellen Davis, Johnny Knox, Al Afalava were mistakes to take. That Bullsh*t.

Not every pick will work out, am I saying he deserves an A+ NO, but another question you should ask yourself is why guys like, Columbo, Wade, Gage, Berrian, Benson, Orton, Harris have flourished away from Chicago. COACHING COACHING COACHING

yea but not so fast

Columbo = injury
Berrian = wanted #1 WR money but was not & is not one
Wade = sucks still a #4-5 wideout in the NFL IMO
Gage = lack of a QB and John Shoop did him in here
Benson = too weak minded to play in a town where the athletes are not treated fairly plus he couldn’t deal with getting too much too soon
Tank = ran out of town by media and fans after a small infraction looked hudge due to over zellious cops and hyped for a story media
Ian Scott = her performed for us
Cory Gram = IMO should be starting instead of Bowman. I say this after his production last season and this years preseason. They just love Bowman size/speed ratio

by jay42 on Nov 24, 2009 2:39 PM CST up reply actions

Graham over Bowman

You do realize he has the most INTs for the Bears with 4? Graham should probably playing nickel for the rest of the season though.

I know about the picks

but remember Vasher use to have a ton of picks too. Back then I told anyone that would listen Nut was the better cover CB look at everything, not just ints and you will see why I say this. As for nickle for gram, I think hes a tad too small. Our best nickle back over the last 3-4 years was R. Manning and D. Manning.

by jay42 on Nov 25, 2009 9:30 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah

but as fans, we have to look at when Bowman has gotten his Ints. 4 in the last 5 games I believe, and that should tell us he’s getting comfortable in the system. He has the prototypical size for the cover-2 and happens to have 4.3-4.4 40 speed as well. He’ll continue to make plays so long as Lovie takes the training wheels off. A nickel CB usually isn’t very big, but quick more than fast and a sure tackler. Size is not a prerequisite for the position. R. Manning was undersized at best.

You sir are a reasonable fan

very good points about Bowman… When reffering to size I was taking into account vs. the run. The nickle back is 75% DB and 25% LB. I love Gram in coverage and although he has not shown hes a bad tackler his size makes me think some one else my be better sutied

Being a GM is not all about Drafting not all draft picks work out for ANY team I said that THIS YEAR does not fall on Angelo.

And I never said he upgraded the O Line, Im not a moron, I said he added depth. Schaffer, Omiyale, and Pace. It is up to the COACHES to decide who is best suited for each position.

They clearly didnt assess talent and put the right guys out there.

Moving a Tackle (Omiyale) to Guard, moving a solid Guard (Beekman) to the bench, not benching Pace when we all saw this coming when he got Dumervilled in Denver in the preseason those are COACHING decisions, thus a coaching change needs to be made.

he might or not be a bad general manager, when you think of some of the players he has drafted and gone to play better for other teams, it could very well come down to the coaching staff. please bring someone in who can give us a winning team.

Player development

has been the biggest disappointment with this regime. It seems like the coaches don’t “get the best” out of the players drafted- CB, Bradley, Gage, Harrison, Anderson, Beekman, D. Manning, etc.
