Bill Cowher: Coaching the Bears Would Excite Him

Wcg_thumb_link_medium
Hold on to your seats folks, but according to the NFL Network, former NFL Head Coach Bill Cowher said that the idea of coaching the Bears (or Texans) would excite him.

An NFL Network report Monday night cited a source that said the idea of coaching the Bears or Texans "would excite,'' Cowher if the job becomes open.

That'll simply make the anti-Lovie contingent among Bears fans even more antsy. But the same report said Cowher would command in the range of $10 million per-season - a staggering price even for a head coach with a Super Bowl ring.

The article also mentions that the Bills had contacted Cowher, but he told them he wasn't interested in talking about coaching gigs until after the season.

Cowher

I’d like to see Cowher head coach the Bears – talk about culture shock among the players who are used to Snuffy Smith. Shanahan makes sense from the standpoint of having Cutler as our QB, however, we can surely find a good OC to complement Cutler while Cowher takes charge. Smith would have to go 0 and the rest of the season for this change to have any possibility of happening any time soon.

we eat the rest of Lovies contract, then spend that type of money on Cowher, Rivera and Wies.

Lets take Cowhere and bring in whoever he wants and be happy with it.

I would love Cowher to to be our HC

but it’s not going to happen in 2010 and I’ll tell you why. Lovie is still owed $11 million on his current contract and if we let him go we’d be writing him a check of that amount as he heads back to Texas. Then on top of it, bringing in a big-time head coach (Cowher, Shannahan, Gruden, or Holmgren) would obviously require a large contract as well and it’s just not fiscally responsible on the Bears part especially when there are free agency moves that are a must for 2010 along with rookie contracts. They are cheap asses regardless thus Lovie will be around for 2010.

Coaches salaries are not regulated under the players salary cap as far as I know, so they can pay whatever they want for a coach and not have it affect FA or rookie contracts, is my understanding.

A recent report ...

In the online magazine Business Pundit had Lovie ranked the 16th highest paid coach … in the world. Not the NFL. Not the United States. The world.

Lovie makes $5.5 million a year. More than Bill Bellichick. More than Pete Carroll. More than Joe Torre. Almost all the highest paid guys are top level soccer coaches.

Spend too much on the wrong players and coaches? Maybe. The Bears may be many things, but they are not cheap asses.

IMO: $10 million is a “wow me” number. That is, Cowher likes the retired life but would come back if the price is right.

Excuse me for my bellicosity. And spelling. Bellicosity and spelling.

oh boy..here we go

I was wondering when the first “Sure I’d be interested” type story would come out. Must say, I’m glad Cowher is even on any sort of short list, even if it’s just the one us Bears fans and the media are making.

How does he handle Cutler though? Thats the only thing that worries me. Is a “take no crap” coach the best idea for cutler?

Worst case scenario, we bring back Kordell (I’m only kidding).

by BBANGUS on Nov 23, 2009 10:54 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

why would that be an issue for cutler?

despite the fact that his line never blocks for him, he has no running game, his receivers don’t complete their routes and don’t come back to the ball, and his o-coordinator has the creativity of a cucumber, he hasn’t exactly mouthed off to anyone. my guess is, he wouldn’t mind better and more accountable coaching. for instance, his mechanics are really off now (probably due to all the sacks, qb hurries, etc. catching up to him), but i doubt hamilton or turner even bother working with him on correcting them because, well, cutler probably knows more than they do.

Toub ?

Fire Turner or have him switch jobs with Toub ala Babich’s demotion.

Make Toub the Offensive Coordinator with full control over the offensive game plan and players to be active.

Lovie stays but focus is entirely on D during games zip input on offensive game planning, play selection, etc.

This gives a shakeup without tearing the guts out of things while Angelo plans for the future.

We don’t want to lose Toub, we don’t care if we lose Turner and we fire a shot across Lovie’s bow.

Question:
Make Toub the Offensive Coordinator with full control over the offensive game plan

Toub has been a Strength coach, a DLine coach, and a STs coach in his career. Does he even have an offense, and if so, what does he run?

by Dane Noble on Nov 24, 2009 7:12 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Are you asking

what he thinks Toub’s game plan would be like? I kind of see him as one of the Wildcat guys. Only guessing though since I can’t recall him ever running an offense either. Strength and conditioning, D-line, and I think he played O-Line in college.

Makes no sense to go after Cowher

when Shanahan is out there.

The team is built around the QB. Who better to coach Jay than Shanahan?

Cowher is somewhat overrated as a head coach. He coached in the most stable organization in the NFL. They’ve had three head coaches in 40 years.

It took Chuck Noll 6 seasons to win the Super Bowl.
Mike Tomlin 2.
Bill Cowher 14.

He’s a good coach. But some people make it sound like he’s Vince Lombardi or something. He’s so far from that it’s not even funny.

by axthelm on Nov 24, 2009 6:52 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I've always liked Coher,

but I completely agree with you. With our Ownership, nothing like Pittsburg’s, and the media also nothing like Pitts. Could be a recipe for disaster. It did seem that Cowher grew a lot as a coach his last few years in Pitts.

by Fridge72 on Nov 24, 2009 6:59 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Right

And the bigger problem with all these heavy hitters (like Cowher, Homgren and even Shanahan) is that they come on and want all the momney and all the power. They want to draft all the players and make every decision.

And it usually doesn’t work. Bill Cowher scares me under those circumstances. Absolutely scares me.

Scares you more than Angela and Lovie "What happened" Smith?

I would rather have a guy like this that hold them accountable for their play instead of a team that seems to not care. As for the money to pay off Lovie, do we really need a GM that can’t manage squat? The McClaskeys take the reins, fire Angelo, pay off Lovie, boot Turner as far as possible and bring in one or two guys who are solely held responsible for the team. Time to rethink this from the top down!

by chandlerred on Nov 24, 2009 3:22 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

No I'd rather have Cowher than Lovie

I just don’t think that giving guys total control works, for the most part. There are some exceptions but this is how I like it:

A strong GM (like An Ozzie Newsome in Baltimore).
A strong head coach (like a Mike Singletary In SF).
Quality offensive and defensive coordinators.

If a great offensive mind (like Mike Shanahan) can come in and work with a good GM and hire an excellent DC then that would work for me.

I think he's going to back off a little.

He has to. He’s not stupid.

Essentially he failed in Denver in the past decade mainly because of his personnel choices on defense and his coaches on defense.

There are only so many hours in a day. If he wants to win then he needs to delagate. It’s just that simple.

Brian Biilick in 1998 was the OC of the 15-1 Minnesota Vikings who set the record for most points scored in the NFL (since broken by the 2007 Patriots).

He won a Super Bowl as the head coach of the Ravens in 2000. Baltimore has one of the best GM’s in the business (Ozzie Newsome) and had three pretty good DC’s (Marvin Lewis, Mike Nolan & Rex Ryan).

I think he’ll still want a lot of control in those areas but he’s smart enough to realize he needs better people in those areas (GM/DC).

Nothing can save them

Cowher to the Bears wouldn’t do anything. You’ve got a bust for a “franchise QB”, and aging defense, a poor offensive line, a RB that lacks playmaking ability (forte has shown he’s only good when there’s a wide open lane to run), and you have NO DRAFT PICKS for the next 2 years.

Unless you’re able to go out and get expensive veteran free agents to fill your holes, and there are a LOT of holes, this team won’t be competitive for a while. I’d say maybe 2014 you guys might be able to earn a winning record again, assuming you have 2 successful drafts in 2012 and 2013.

Good luck bears fans, I don’t see you dancin in the streets over Cutler NOW!

Vikings

Got lucky when a handful of teams passed on Adrian Peterson to draft the likes of Gaines Adams & Levi Brown.

Got lucky that Jared Allen was such a knucklehead in KC that he facilitated his trade to Minnesota.

Got lucky that Eric Mangini and the Browns essentially handed over the 5th pick in last years draft to the Jets so that NY could draft Mark Sanchez.

No Mark Sanchez, no way they cut Brett Favre, allowing him to walk into Minnesota.

They got realllllllll lucky with that one, now didn’t they? (Unless you think they’d be 9-1 with Tavaris Jackson under center).

Unfortunately for Viking fans, Cutler is 26 and Brett Favre is about 100.

Yeah, talk about short windows.

Regardless of how much “luck” went into their team being in the position it is in now, there is such a short window for what they want to do. And they don’t look as solid as the Saints. Does anybody think that an aging Favre is going to be around for a long time? Does anybody think Tavaris Jackson will QB this team to a Championship?

I didn’t think so.

The Bears Got Lucky

with all those turnovers that other teams dropped the ball on and all the kickoff returns that hester had on blown kickoff coverage! Sounds ridiculous to use luck as an excuse. If it happens enough times, like WINNING, then it’s not luck.

I meant to just make a point that the bears have a TON of holes to fill outside of coaching. I just had to throw in the Cutler thing because of so many Bears fans that went absolutely nuts and started talking shit when the trade was announced.

By the way, Brett Favre could play until he’s 45 and still be better than Cutler.

Agreed

The Vikes look good, but there is no way they are going to the Superbowl. They have a cupcake schedule (including our Bears twice, unfortunately) and are a paper tiger.

Soon, they will face a team that will put Brett on his back a couple of times and he’ll show his age.

Hopefully

I’m still having trouble figuring out which NFC team that is. Likely signs point to the Saints, since they put up numbers with the big boys. However, they’re giving up 115 rushing yards a game, and they haven’t played any one like AP yet this year. And if they dial up on him, Captain Geriatric has proven he’s still got 250-300 yard games in that limp noodle on his right shoulder.

At this point, I’d like the Saints to win it. Just because I don’t like any of the other teams in contention, and I think they might offend me the least.

Vikings will fail epically

because that’s what they do, like clockwork, each and every season.

And Bratt’s not exactly known for putting up his best effort when the season’s on the line.

I say: the higher the climb, the harder the fall.

And, assuming this Vikes team (thoroughly untested as of week 12) DO manange to get past N.O. or whoever and get to the SB—well hell, I think they’re the PERFECT team to take the Vikes to an all-time league best of 0-5 in SB appearances.

Wouldn’t it be fitting?

Then just watch the wheels come off that crappy characterless dysfunctional “organization” after that one…

by Amishbear on Nov 24, 2009 12:30 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Keep holding your breath

This season is pure destiny for the Vikes to finally get their ring. Once they do, Bears fans have NOTHING over them, and won’t have anything for at least the next 5 years.

I mean come on, you’ve got the best player in the NFL in AP, Percy Harvin probably getting ROY, a top veteran defense, and the whole Brett Favre ordeal. It makes for an amazing story and this season will go down as one of the best ever. Just from a story perspective, I can’t see how the Vikings don’t win the superbowl this year. If it happens, it will be devastating, and some fluke injury or ref call would have to take it from them.

Cowher would be more lucrative for the Bears

The Bears accountants and business men should see getting Cowher as a lucrative acquistion than keeping Lovie onboard. True Lovie is owed about $11 million for the remaining 2 years of his contract. But the uproar of having Cowher as the coach would definitely put more money than the $11 million owed to Lovie in the pockets of Bears management in a multitude of ways. Remember not too long ago, when the Bears uncharacteristically traded for Cutler, this town went crazy. That acquistion drove more fans to Bears’ camp than anything player or coach in history. With Cowher and Cutler, then reconstruction of the Bears roster will have Bears gear falling off the shelf. However, if the Bears keep Lovie for next year expectation will be zero and less money pouring in with the belief 2010 will be worse.
