Cutler Least of Our Worries
OK, I get it. Jay Cutler is the most exciting and intriguing part of our team. We've invested our future (draft picks) and a good chunk of money (salary cap) on this rocket-armed and talented young QB. We want to poke, prod, speculate, condemn, defend, and know about him. For the foreseeable future, however goes Cutler, so goes the Bears, and so goes the joy or despair of an entire nation of Grabowskis. We are worried that he is being coached wrong, fearful that he may turnout to be another Jeff George instead of Brett Fav-ruh.
But if we've learned anything the past few weeks, it's that ours is a deeply flawed team, and that in many ways, the least of our worries is Jay Cutler. Of ALL positions on our team, QB is the one I am worried least about (with the possible exception of WLB). It's the one good move in the past few years for JA. My biggest fear when it comes to Jay is that we are wasting his talent or may get him seriously hurt. In the QB department, we're OK. We're good. In my humble opinion, what we need to figure out is what we are going to do about many other pressing problem areas on our team. For example:
- Our rapidly aging defense. Say what you will about injuries to Urlacher and Pisa. The fact of the matter is that a lot these "injuries" are the bodies of older players breaking down.
- A receiving corps that lacks a #1. I love Devin Hester to death. My favorite jersey is #23, but he is not a #1.
- An offensive line that can't run block, and a RB that doesn't seem to want to fight for tough yards.
- A coaching staff that is becoming more ineffective by the game. Lovie's expressionless face used to evoke words like "stoic" and "calm". Now it looks "defeated" and "clueless".
- Our defensive line can't get pressure on anyone, and the only one that looks mildly effective is one Alex Brown.
- Our front seven can't bring down a runner. It seems like every other play another defender gets dragged for an extra 3-4 yards.
And those above are just what I have on the top of my head right now.
Again, I'm not saying that fans feelings about Cutler, whatever they may be, are wrong or unimportant. What I am saying is please don't use Cutler as a strawman or as a substitute for discussing more troubled areas of da bears. While we are discussing the most talented (not accomplished) QB we've had in...well...forever, let's not forget the REAL problem areas of our team. Because no matter how good or bad Cutler turns out to be, if we don't rethink and solve these problems, it won't matter.

It doesn't work
This team is pathetic. They do not have the personnel for Cutler. Every throw Cutler makes down field, the receiver is draped by a defender. Cutler is constantly having to throw in tight holes and not a single receiver on this team knows how to fight for the ball or even get open for that matter. He threw a picture perfect pass to Knox on the touchdown. He then threw an underthrown pass to Knox, who made ZERO effort on the ball. Any receiver worth a damn would make that a jump ball. Yet again, another NON pass interference call leads to a pick. This is exactly what I thought would happen this game.
This team can eat my ass!!!
Aromashadu shouldve been a starter from day 1.
Coaches are just too stupid to start him. They dont give anyone with a little talent the time to shine. Ditka would and thats for damn sure. Why not start Bell at RB at this point?

Horrible O-Line.
Lifelong Arizona Cardinals/Chicago Bears fan.
No band-wagoner fans allowed, pick a team and stick with em, throughout the good and the bad.
Where is the all of the above option?
It’s a combination of everything. Every aspect of this team sucks. I know people want to defend Cutler, but he is also a problem as of right now. His confidence is shot and he doesn’t make good decisions. I see him throwing into coverage quite a bit. Sure our WR’s aren’t getting open, but you also don’t force the ball.
Great post ChiLobo...
I agree 250%. I vote for FIRE LOVIE WITH MALICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been worried about this team since the unconvincing win at Seattle and now all my concerns are front and center. We as fans need to make our voice heard. I fear the that “answer” will be hiring Martz to run the offense and letting Lovie serve another year. This would assure a disaster of epic proportions. If Lovie stays any longer, Cutler may be irretrievably damaged by this coaching staff. LOVIE HAS GOT TO GO NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When you find yourself in a hole, STOP DIGGING!!!
Thanks.
LOVIE HAS TO GO!!!! TURNER HAS TO GO!!! Its a no brainer and thanks again.

why isnt any1 in the city of chicago
starting a pickett line tomorrow morning and calling for some action??? Seriously, if i lived there, i would try some thing like that. Make a statement, get on the news, cause a scene, bring attention to the douchebags in the front offce. Its real simple to start a post on a blog or comment, but action requires fortitude and some balls. Stop the chit chat, and make an impact…thats my new motto for 2010

very little talent on D.
Only two votes for defense as the biggest problem area? The poll results are strange or maybe there is just not the right option for biggest problem area (overall shortage of talent on defense).
There is a glaring shortage of talent on the Chicago defense. No coach or franchise QB could mask this talent deficiency.
When Chicago finishes with around the 10th worst record in 2009, that poor finish is a direct result of Chicago possessing less talent than at least 20 other NFL teams.
This is my favorite website.
talent
I think most everyone, i know i do, agrees with you on the talent pool we have on defense. At this point in Lovie’s tenure 98% of the players on the team are Angelo’s picks that Jerry feels fit into Lovie’s tampa 2 scheme. (don’t forget that Angelo made his living off of scouting for tampa-2 players in TB) So yeah our talent all around the team is the problem. But the reason it is there is because of the scheme and talent evaluations of the head coach and general manager.
I don’t want new coaching to mask it, i want new management to get better talent, because i have no faith in this manager, coach to get it done.
My issues
Yes Cutler gets on my damn nerves, I have never been a fan of his going back to Vanderbilt, However I can’t put the entire blame on him with a bad line, ineffective running game, and a group of second tier receivers.
The running game has got to be fixed ASAP! Our running backs only use for us now is the passing game. The receivers are killing me. I love Hester and I do believe Earl Bennett will be good in time but with no one scaring a team commanding a double team and such that hurts Cutler because he will force throws.
Defensively, I don’t know where to start. I have a strong love/hate relationship with Tommie Harris and I don’t know if I can take it anymore. I’m almost to the point where I wouldn’t mind a switch to a 3-4 defense (which I despise). Without are two unquestioned leaders of the past Urlacher and Mike Brown it’s almost like the D has no heart. I do see effort from Briggs and Peanut but to me it’s just not the same.
I do believe Lovie has lost the team and I did vote for a new staff. Since our Super Bowl run we haven’t just gotten worse, we’ve completely tanked. Now we have holes at virtually every position yet, no high draft picks to restock, not to mention with a potential uncapped year will we be willing to spend on free agents?
Draft guru in training.
Harris is worthless
He got manhandled all game by hutchinson. no real double teams needed for him this year. which is why most of our blitzes get picked up. He got a pick (good job by him on actually holding on) that was thrown right into his chest. He sacked alex smith because smith essentially runs into him. He rarely gets any pressure and when he does it is because the o-line messed up. I dunno if it is the injuries he’s had to his knees, if he is completely lazy, doesn’t care.. whatever it is, he sucks now. no, he has sucked for at least 2 years.
you're right
Briggs and Peanut do play hard but they just don’t have that leadership intangible.
"I am not an animal!" - Merrick
I can not believe so many people voted for Cutler.
That is unbelievable. Ignorance is bliss. Let’s point to the one guy in the spotlight and pull the blame trigger. This team is pathetic all over the place. Cutler has performed very poorly at times, but this team’s lack of success is so far from his fault. Throw any QB with a team with no O-line, no run game, and 3 rookie (or inexperienced) receivers and see how far they go.
If I could only tell Lovie one thing, it’d be that the Rams are terrible because they didn’t have talent… so stop bringing in all their old washed-up veterans to the Bears and call it an off-season. Now if Steven Jackson or Oshiomogho Atogwe want to come play for Chicago, be my guest on bringing them in… but please stop doing favors for all these bums even St. Louis doesn’t want.
WR's
totally with you. the knox interception in the endzone, if knox recognizes that it is underthrown (because Jay is about to get leveled) and he gets aggressive for the ball, its more than likely a TD. Now that isn’t totally knox’s fault, being a rookie, and i’m not saying Jay is blameless in throwing the ball. But if our wr’s were coached up a lil better in actually seeing the ball, going for it, being a defender when you need to, these picks wouldn’t happen often. I like our wr’s i think there is a lot of potential. But there is noone on this staff to get it out of them.
Seriously this rams to chitown connection is like if San Diego were trying to get all that wasted talent on the Oakland squad! there is none.. thats why they suck. But that is why we need new coaches, gm..
Last night I watched the Ravens-Steelers
There was a play that looked a lot like the Knox-Cutler interception. The ball was a little under thrown, but in the general area of the receiver. The difference is that Mason went back for the ball and got it. I was thinking, “now there is a wideout who can bail out their QB.” No wonder Jay would prefer to overthrow his receivers. He has no confidence in them that they will win a battle with a defender.
Exactly!!!
QBs are not going to put the ball on the numbers every time. No QB will!!! He needs his WRs to make a play on the ball from time to time and the Bears WR corps is incapable of doing that. He needs a big, physical, WR to make plays on the ball in those situations a la Marshall. If Jay can get that, and move Hester to the Slot, I really believe that will make a huge difference in the passing game.
Yeah, I'm a bit suprised by the numbers on the poll as well.
I’m guessing that a few votes might be non-bear fan trolls voting for Cutler, but it still doesn’t explain the rest. For that I agree with sirius19x.
But tj.hendricks has a great point. I also can’t believe that people are holding the D harmless still. If I didn’t vote coaching staff, I’d vote D line. When we were getting sacks earlier in the season, the D played better overall.
The secondary wasnt eben that good when mikde brown was here
OLine is an obvious choice, but I struggle to figure out which is worse, our dbs or our wrs and if there is a connection to them both being so historically bad.
30% of you think Cutler was the problem this year ?
Doesn’t say a lot for WCG readership …..

It's probably the same 30%

You have a lot of problems, but Cutler is one of the big ones as well.......
He has played well against cellar dwelling teams and was HORRENDOUS against good to great teams in his time at Denver.
The problem you have is that he is now in a better division than the AFC West, and you are seeing the results. He is in the perfect situation in Chicago…..the coaches, players and as evident by the comments, the fans dont hold him accountable at all.
The same was true at Vandy where he did what he wanted……he was the only star and all his faults were glossed over as failure of a bad team, and never as clear faults in mechanics and decision making.
He came in with Denver being 7-4 for Jake Plummer who was the most winningest QB in Denver history and choked away the chances at the play offs. It was once again explained away as being a rookie. Same in 2007, and then in 2008 he choked down the straight as well.
I have many Bears fans that were so stoked when they got Cutler, and I said then "Just beware fans…hes going to break your heart." Now, they are saying they wish they would have believed what Denver fans were saying.
I am just imploring you guys to not buy into this Jay Cutler BS.
I like the Bears, I like their fans….I have never had anything but good interactions with guys like Smudgers, Traboffa and many others and I am not hating.
I really am bummed that you have an idiot like Angelo that mortaged your whole franchise on a guy that has proved to be nothing but a guy with a big arm, who masquerades as a JUGS interception machine and who rarely admits to his own faults.
Research the kid guys….look at his history and you will understand more what you have.
Good luck with it…..the Bears and their fans deserve more than what you have, and the blame lies out the feet of Jerry Angelo who must have been studying form the Matt Millen book of how to run a team.
You need picks, line help and some explosive players, but the Cutler trade will set this storied franchise back years.
Peace.
