The Upcoming Schedule & DA Defense

The defense bothers me... every week... they stink... they are injured.. blah..blah...blah.. Read below for the schedule ahead vs. a lovely piece of creation called the Chicago Bears Defense... no pun intended..

Star-divide

The Defense, considering we had so much hope in the beginning of the season, is in shambles. Sure we gave up 6 points to the Cleveland Browns, but that's it?  I have been following the Bears since 1989, and have seen two dominant defenses: 2001, and 2005-06. That's it!  As it stands now , we have the Cardinals (great offense, even though they lost last week), the Niners ( with an improving Alex Smith), the Eagles( with McNabb and company), the Vikings(Brett and his gang, plus AP), the Rams (well , they are the Rams), the Pack( an improving Aaron Rodgers), and Baltimore (with Flacco, and the defense). Then the Vikings again (more Brett and AP), AND the hapless, hopeless, and who's our QB(Detroit Lions?) Are they back or what? 1-7 so far? So two gimmes(St. Louis and Detroit) and then what? Against our defense? Scary!!!   Any comments from the crowd? I am new at this blogging thing!!! GO BEARS!!!

Well

Arizona is toss up
SF will (should) be easier with their T injured, and Nate Clements is out as well
Eagles will be tough, for sure
We will at least split with the VIkings
Aaron Rodgers may be dead before we have to play the Pack again
and the Lions and Rams… wel, i’m skeptical, but those are two wins for us at this point.

still looks like a 9-7 schedule to me, unless we luck out on a couple (Cards/Eagles) but only then can we legitimately look at 10 or 11 wins

Suspect.....
We will at least split with the VIkings

Let’s hear why?

by Figgs on Nov 4, 2009 9:19 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Let's hear why we won't at least split.

I hope you don’t sweep us and I’d like to say worse case we split, but like you I hope for the sweep.

Because

At least split means that you think you would either a) sweep us or b) split with us. We both know the Bears won’t sweep the Vikings, not with all the problems that are on their offense:

Bears running game is suspect, at best. The O-line needs some serious help. Cutler is not nearly as clutch as he needs to be — and the Vikings D-Line is getting to the quarterback just fine. Cutler, in my opinion, is showing that he can’t get it done when he is under a lot of pressure (like Rodgers can). He throws too many picks and is inconsistent.

The Vikings offense is having no trouble putting up points this year. I don’t really see any reason to think that is going to change when playing the Bears because your defense is about as good as ours. Do you? While the defenses of both our teams are struggling against the pass, I think in these two particular matchups it boils down to who has a better offense. I definitely don’t think the Bears offense is better than the Vikings. If you guys win a game, it will be December 28th because it is in your house and weather could be a factor.

So, I would say that you will at best split with us, not at least.

question

whats Lovies record against farve? feel free to include wins, takeaways etc.

if you look at lovies history, you’ll understand why some bears fans say “at least” split.

Seems to me

That Favre is playing some of his best football right now. Don’t know if that would make me feel any better if I were a Bears fan (I almost passed out just thinking about it). Those are just a bunch of numbers. If they make you feel better though, then fine.

I didn't say they made me feel better

rahulsriram asked what the numbers were so I got them for him. He actually asked you for them but I went ahead and helped you out. You’re welcome.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how the games go then. I’ll put you down as thinking the Vikings will win, and I’ll go ahead and say Chicago wins. Fair enough.

Ok...

fine using at least maybe the wrong choice.

However:

We both know the Bears won’t sweep the Vikings

That’s what you think. Contrary to popular belief they still have to actually play the game and it is possible that the Bears can beat you in Minny. Yes the probability of the Bears winning Dec 28th at home is more likely, you can’t rule out that it’s already said and done.

Yes our O line hasn’t been that great, but there is a chance they could improve by the time our two teams face off. I am in no way trying to discredit the Vikes success, yes you are 7-1 and you have beaten some good teams. You also must take into consideration that teams tend to play their division foes just a tad bit tougher than other teams.

As long as AP runs the ball effectively you guys will have a good showing, I just don’t know if I’m totally sold on Farve later in the season. he’s playing good football right now but Chilly is way to into what’s going on with his groin. :)

Even if AP

Doesn’t run the ball effectively, we can still win. We have all season. So I don’t think that means much….

Here is all that I am saying. I think the chances of a sweep by the Vikings is greater than a sweep by the Bears, all things considered. That’s why I question the “at least” comment originally made. Not much to back it up.

I like this too:

Contrary to popular belief they still have to actually play the game and it is possible that the Bears can beat you in Minny

Well, St. Louis still isn’t ruled out of the playoffs, so maybe they’ll win the Super Bowl. I mean, contrary to popular belief they still have half a season left and….. well, I think you get it. My example is very far-fetched, but you could say that about every game every week.

by Figgs on Nov 4, 2009 12:06 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

You know what I meant by that.

Yes even if AP doesn’t win you still can win. And no I don’t think you’ll sweep us. Just because you took GB down twice doesn’t mean you will take us down twice. Will you win the division, probably but as a good fan I will refuse to admit it even if you copy and paste this with my name, my photo, two of my buddies to confirm I said, my wife and kid and my mom all there as well to verify that yes it is me.

I usually don’t correct spelling, but Favre has been in the league for almost two decades and you really should learn to spell his name. That is unless, you are doing it on purpose. And if you are…..then I guess whatever floats your boat.

Second of all, I’ll be 10 rows up on the 50 yard line to witness the Bears losing to the Vikings on November 29th. Can’t wait. The late December game may in fact be won by the Bears. If everything goes as planned not many of our starters will be playing that game.

Either way, good luck because you’ll need it.

And on top of that, you brought tons of other extremely useful information filled with unique insight like where your seats are and how we suck and you are demigods.

Again, thank you for bringing so much truth to the conversation. You, sir, have a fan for life. Kudos.

The Vikings rock (and you know it) and b) I know that pisses you off and c) you want Rex Grossman back, but that doesn’t mean you have to spout off about absolutely nothing in a conversation that you contributed zero too — does it?

You accused me of being a troll a long time ago (for no reason). I convinced you otherwise. Now I try to come here and have a meaningful conversation with some of your hombres — and succeed. Why, then, do you insist on adding the junk that you did above?

How long...

have you been storing up that comment?

And “convinced me?” I’ve looked up the referenced conversation between the two of us. I called you a troll because I believed, and still do, that what you did in that thread was trolling. I wasn’t asking for ebannination, just for you to simply to come here without a throw it in your face mentality that you originally did.

And for the record, I wasn’t responding to you or about you in this case. Hell, I didn’t even remember who you were. I was posting a sarcastic response to dsludo who also, at that point, had contributed zero to this particular conversation.

And what’s with this:

The Vikings rock (and you know it) and b) I know that pisses you off and c) you want Rex Grossman back

I’m assuming you’re trying to set me off here?

Because it's division football

and it’s always a tough game going both ways… the NFC north games have less to do with talent, and more to do with luck, field position and weather.

1-1 for Bears Vikings

Late Dec in Soldiers...

that’s why I think we’ll split. Favre has been nothing short of horrible outside in winter, and combine that with his bad, bad recent dealings with the Bears and I believe they’ll beat the Vikes. If both teams continue to play the way they have, the Bears probably get blown out in the Rollerdome though.

You never know whats going to happen.

The Cardinals game will be tough, although it looks like Warner’s hip is bothering him the offense is still good, and they are starting to get a running game going now that Beanie Wells is running the ball more. The Cardinals are also having a lot of the inconsistency and Offensive Line problems the Bears have right now.

49ers are a good team, but they should be easier to beat than the Cardinals, although Singletary might know some stuff that the team still uses.

Eagles, Vikings, and Packers games are all tough to win, but it can be done. Vikings > Eagles > Packers.

Lions and Rams are basically an extra bye week.

i agree beanie is explosive

but he could follow up a 40 yrd run with a fumble on the one yard line and warner is prone to throw picks if boldin is out and it looks like he might be and even if he plays he wont be at this best i think tillman matchs up well with fitz.
only time will tell .
i see 10-6 i think 49ers are the trickiest of the bunch i see a split with the viqueens and philly is tough but at home so are the bears cutler has thrown one pick in three home games while throwing ten on the road i think we are in for a run my friends

I think if we can squeak one out against the Cards

we’ll roll through SF, with their injuries and instability at QB. to me, it really hinges on winning against Arizona. builds momentum, a winning streak, confidence etc.

With their injuries?

Our injuries: Urlacher, Pisa
Their injuries: Staley, Clements

We are just as banged up. SF is a scarier team than AZ especially with their new found passing game and defense.

for years now, they haven’t. new injuries affect more than the lingering loss of production we’ve felt from our MLB position for two years now

Just don’t see us rolling through SF. They played the Queens and Colts to the wire with “instability at QB”. Their defense can be tough w/ or w/o Clements. I think it is a winnable game but we didn’t even roll through Cleveland. SF will be a tougher match up than Arizona for the fact that it is on the road after a short week.

3 more wins...

Rams, Detroit and (place random opponent name here). It is unrealistic to see the Bears doing much better than 7-9. What do they do well and how are they a better match at any unit other then ST or at any position other then QB? I think the best the fans can hope for is 8-8 with a win at home against GB. IMO, it is unlikely that the Bears even make the playoffs, so why not get a longer look at the talent farther down the roster. Injuries have forced this upon the defense and ineptitude has forced at least one on the offense. Why not put in Louis at G or Gilbert at 3-technique? Are the Bears going to play 6 more games pretending to be contenders and end up with the same questions in the offseason as they did this year? If the talent is there now, hasn’t yet developed, or doesn’t have the ability to develop, then at least the priorities can be set.

Don’t get me wrong, I will still root for the Bears every week, I am a fan and that’s what I do, but can the team at least have the respect for us to actually take steps to improve the team’s players and coaches and not just “say” that they are!

and you wanna start putting the backups in to see what they can do? You’ve really given up on the season already, after seven games… and a winning record?

And 8-8 is the best we can hope for, really?

Yes...

I would love to see 13-3, but how can you justify any more then the .500 football they are currently playing? Where is the improvement going to come from? If you have answers please share them.

I am stating that this team is who they are. They have some great building blocks and coaches that are in way over their heads. Lovie and Co. are good coaches for underachieving veteran talent, but they do a piss poor job of finding and developing new talent. I will root for them to succeed, but they simply are just as average as they have been for the last 2 and a half seasons. How many more mediocre seasons are you willing to endure?

You have us winning

to the Lions, Rams, (RO) and possibly the Packers…

We are left with: Cardinals, Eagles, 49’ers, Vikings (2x), Ravens. While all those teams are decent, they are all beatable. We seem to play up/down to our opponents, which is why I don’t count the Lions or Rams as gimmes or the Ravens or Eagles as automatic L’s.

With the parody that is the NFL, I don’t think throwing in the towel on the season after seven games and a winning record is the smartest of moves. Especially when, at times, we’ve looked like a legitimate contender (see: Steelers, Pittsburgh).

And while I agree that we’re not the best at developing players, we seem to be improving at it: Roach, Manning, Hester, Bowman, Afalava, Bennett and Knox to name a few. No, they’re not lighting the world on fire, but they have all shown incredible progression, imo.

I would also venture to guess that Lovie and Co. know better than we do, when and/or if a player is ready to contribute. And maybe, just maybe, Gilbert or Louis just aren’t ready yet.

9-7

Arizona (home), SF, Philadelphia ( home), Minnesota (home), and Green Bay (Home) are still all winnable games even with the crap way the team is playing and being coached to play.

Arizona – streaky, beat the Giants but then lose to Carolina; no one knows how they will come out. If we can get a pass rush on them they are in trouble
San Francisco – overall very equal to the Bears. Will be playing without #1 CB and #1 Tackle. Bears are at a disadvantage cause it is an away game across country on a short week.
Philadelphia – already lost to OAKLAND this year. Live and die by the big play and even if the Tampa 2 sucks, it is designed to not give up the big play. Philadelphia still has no running game.
Minnesota and Green Bay – you can’t discount any NFC North game especially at home; Green Bay is more than beatable as we saw in Week 1 and Minnesota still hasn’t been hit with ANY injuries yet; I bet that changes

Last year we started 1-2 with even LESS talent and the same coaching. I have a feeling we will be in the wildcard race at the end of the year, but may come up short with a 9-7 record again. Some how Chicago finds ways to win.

That was just against the Colts:

“Clements has been demoted from the starting lineup for Sunday’s game against the Colts, reports the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.
Spin: The physical Clements doesn’t match up as well against the speedy Colts’ receivers as his backup, Tarell Brown. It appears to be a one-week change, and Clements will still see the field plenty against the frequent Colts’ three-wideout formations, but Brown has been pushing for more playing time for a while now.” From ESPN.com

Really dude?

This is the NFL. Things change every week, every day. We could be playing awful one day then hit our stride the next. Minnesota could face injuries to AP and Jared Allen. You are ready to give up not even half way through the season???? We aren’t even in that bad of position at 4-3. Right now, the two wild card teams are Dallas at 5-2 and NYG at 5-3. We are 4-3 with a bunch of other teams. You really think we are out of it? We have proven year after year we can play like poop and still win for some intangible reason. Were you willing to give up last year? Cause our team has a lot more talent than last year’s team that started 1-2 and made a big push for the wildcard and division.

Only if negativity is familial...

BTW, some people may consider those fightin’ words; not me though. Yeah, I am taking a negative tact because last year was a team that matched up better against the NFC North than this one. Both the Packers and Vikings will be good again next year. Yes anything can happen, but I would rather have this team play well and be 3-4 with an upside, than 4-3 because of 2 missed FGs. You do realize the Bears have yet to play 4 good quarters in the same game. We can talk about the players or the coaches, but I see both as a problem. The team lacks talent, which is not uncommon in the NFL even for successful teams. But coupled with what I see as bad coaching, there is no reason to hope some magic will change the basic structure of this team this season. Average talent can be coached to succeed beyond their individual capabilities and talent can make average coaches look better. This team has not played well at all this season; save a few flashes from time to time. So again I ask, what about the current Bears team is going to change for the better? What can they do a little better that helps them win games. IMO, there is not much other then getting a bunch of turnovers which this team has not done yet. (Don’t include the Browns game, they are terrible and the Bears do not play them 6 more time this season anyway!)

I agree with your assessment of what their record will probably end up at (7-9 or 8-8), but

I can’t see playing backups at this point. Once they have reached 7-8 losses, which would effectively put the playoffs out of reach, then I think your plan would be a good one. No matter what Lovie’s fate is, Bears’ management needs to find out what level of talent they have on their roster so they can put a plan into action for the off-season.

I hope the Bears turn some magic rock over and go 12-4 with malice and destroy every team they play and finish the season hoisting the Lombardi trophy as I dance around my front yard drunken and taunting my neighbor (a Packer fan). I am, however, just more realistic about what I think needs to happen. I do not think Lovie can regain the respect he once had with this franchise. If he stays, the Bears will probably be like they have been for the past 2 years, hovering around .500 somewhere. Two more marginal years of Cutler’s talent wasted. I have watched the Bears since the 70s and I have not been this excited at the potential for a great offense ever. I know it has only been a few games and the Bears are not going to be great overnight, but I have seen this team get worse and worse each week. This signals that the players are not getting it done and the coaches do not know why. I, like many loyal Bear fans, have suffered these last few years and we are sick of this team getting no better or worse and something will have to change before tha will happen.

All a team needs to do in the NFL

is get hot at the right time.
This could not be more evidenced by the Giants a few years ago who were not anything spectacular in the regular season. Last year, Arizona had the division wrapped up early but was playing for a 1st round bye. They got CRUSHED by Philadelphia and New England late in the season. Playoffs come around and they get hot and go to the SB and are a few minutes away from being champions. I don’t see how you can give up hope, as crappy as we played, we are right where we need to be to be playoff contenders.

I get it, hope does spring eternal...

but the “any given Sunday” theme is good for a game, maybe 2, in a season. The Bears used theirs on the Steelers and Seahawks already. Last year’s Cards only needed to finish 9-7 to win their crappy division and get into the playoffs and they did always have the offensive potential to outscore anyone. The Giants defense had arguably the best d-line in the NFC that year and an elite WR coupled with an effective running game. What do the Bears do well this year? It’s not offense, defense, or special teams. I am not saying I hope the Bears do poorly, just that I don’t see what this team is capable of doing to win more than an occasional game and be 8-8 or 9-7, which doesn’t get them into the playoffs.

Would a W this weekend change your opinion?

It would mine… Currently I feel the same way you do. 7-9 to 9-7 is where I see the finish.

But, a win against a team like Arizona, would make the glass half full for me. At that point I’d be thinking 10-6 to 11-5. It’s all about this Sunday.

Completely understand

I am also not optimistic that things will turn around but just for the integrity of the game they need to play their starters until they are actually out of playoff contention. My feeling is that Lovie has to go if they don’t reach the playoffs for a third straight year, but as has been discussed in several posts, I doubt that the McCaskeys will pull the trigger.
