Urlacher on yahoo sports, Bears identity has changed.
“Look, I love Jay, and I understand he’s a great player who can take us a long way, and I still have faith in him,” Urlacher said. “But I hate the way our identity has changed. We used to establish the run and wear teams down and try not to make mistakes, and we’d rely on our defense to keep us in the game and make big plays to put us in position to win. Kyle Orton might not be the flashiest quarterback, but the guy is a winner, and that formula worked for us. I hate to say it, but that’s the truth.”
Brain Urlacher
I disagree about the Lovie part about wanting him back the guy is a lame coach. Maybe Brain hasn't been watching the games as much because this defense can't stop anyone to keep a punting offense in a game. Check it out.

Is it just me or does this sort of interview/remarks seem to hint at some nasty tension in the Bears locker room?

sounds like more frustration with the philosphy
i mean when you throw it on three straght downs and punt after only being on the field for a whopping 45 seconds your defense is gonna get ran down on.
Look, we all know NeckBeard never really lost us a game but then again he didnt win all that many either but that was okay we all came accustomed to that.
I beleive in Jay but not in these Coaches i cant beleive that our beloved bears were in the superbowl three years ago hell they almost won the divison last year! and now we have gone 1-6 after that great 3-1 start.
we miss urlacher in the defense and some common sense on the offense
Urlacher is frustrated.
What he doesn’t seem to understand is that there IS NO RUNNING GAME, and the defense ISN’T CAPABLE OF STOPPING ANYBODY. Of course the identity has changed. This team has no identity. I love Brian as a Bear and former Lobo, but he is obviously frustrated that his D is playing awful while he is helpless to stop their decline on the sidelines, and he is no longer the unquestioned star on the team with Jay here now. He’s venting. Its understandable.
i agree
he doesnt want to come out and say the defense has fallen off from the 05 and 06 seasons and it probaly kills him knowing he would help tremendously but hes unable to go in there and show them how its done

so he goes after cutler and forte instead?
what’s up with that? sure, cutler and forte need to do better, but are you freaking kidding me, brian? the problem is very obvious to everyone…the coaching is terrible all the way through (minus toub), the defense is just awful, and the o-line moves backwards so much you’d think they were moonwalking. but yeah, call out cutler and forte.

we can only assume really
i know he sees what we see each week. which is the WHOLE team needs to step it up and it may be too late but that doesnt mean we need to become a doormat. he should not have named because everyone needs to be called out

I don't interpret it as him going after Cutler and Forte...
But rather the way they’re being used in the offensive scheme as a whole.
That's funny
Because I don’t remember Urlacher making these comments about the good old days of Bear football when his defense was busy losing the Carolina game in ’05(Which still pisses me off) and the Superbowl in ’06.
To me if you’re not out there taking the sacks, and the hits that Cutler and others are taking this season, you have a lot of nerve sitting in a Condo during the game while your teammates are actually playing, running your mouth, romanticizing about Kyle Orton. What a bunch of BS! If Kyle Orton was here things may actually be worse and for this guy to encourage meathead Orton fans every where, suggesting things would be different is ridiculous.
Brian is jumping off
the Titanic. We traded away the glue last year. Why not trade away the heart of the team this year. Maybe McD would offer a 2nd or 3rd rounder for him.
What elmer's glue?
We’ve gone back and forth since the trade Rocko but cut me some slack here. You no darn well we’re in just as bad of shape with Orton as with Cutler. I mean come on.
Urlacher got a beef with Cutler and it’s obvious and I’m not cutting him any slack with this one. He’s poisoning the waters and he knows it.
I honestly
believe Orton is a much better QB than Cutler and that the team would have a better record after week 12, if the trade wasn’t made. Urlacher(and I’m sure many of the vets) didn’t like the trade from day one. I have no idea if Brian has a beef with Jay, but I think it’s safe to say most players probably have issues with JA. He’s has ruined the franchise. We could go on and on over what the record would be if the trade wasn’t made, but I don’t want to waste both of our time. I like Orton and hope that Cutler will develop into a good QB. I know that’s not what you wanted to hear, but that’s my honest opinion and it hasn’t changed since April.
I realize that
but the other thing that would not have changed are all the other issues with this team. Orton, in my opinion, doesn’t change that. But that’s where we’ll just have to disagree.
how do you think wed have a better record?
i love orton but in know way is he a better qb than cutler. better manager? yes . more conservative? yes. orton could never make the big plays that cutler has made this year. with orton behind this terrible ling we might be sitting at 2-8 or something. but then again all we are doing is speculating and no one will really know
by Bear Lovin 21 on Nov 30, 2009 3:28 PM CST up reply actions
He was running
this terrible thing last year. Receivers are a little better and the line is…well the same old piece of swiss cheese. Coaching hasn’t changed. Defense is a little better this year. Just speculating that KO was more familar with the scheme and crappy personnel. Turnovers wouldn’t be an issue. Might have used some of those draft picks to shore up the OL. and yes, I believe Orton is better than Cutler. They sure love KO in Denver. I think he’s found a home. Just my opinion Bear Lovin.
I disagree
the o-line is worse than last year and the play-calling hasn’t been changed to fit Cutler
I agree about the play-calling
It’s the same old piece of crap scheme that Turner is the architect of. For once, I would like to see Cutler rolling out. Cutler is not used to the pressure and that’s easy to see. Turner needs to help him out with deeper drops and roll outs. That’s how Shannahan designed many of the plays. The scheme never really fit with Orton either. He came out of a spread offense at Purdue where he was in the shotgun most of the game. It was a big adjustment in 2005. The Broncos scheme is very similar to Tiller’s and is a good fit for Kyle. Manage the game, play smart, make the proper reads at the line, get the ball to the playmakers, and don’t turn the ball over.
I think I'm going to pee myself. You're too funny
Defense is a little better this year
You mean the defense that’s given up the most 3rd downs in the NFL? Or the one that allows 31pts in the first half? Or is it the one that lets teams score 5 times in a row?
The O Line is actually quite a bit worse, but it doesn’t matter because even Petyon Manning couldn’t dig the Bears out of a 30 point first half hole (just a 17 pointer), much less Kyle Orton, and I doubt anyone could be successful with such a flimsy line and pedestrian receivers.
Face it!
Cutler is a big disappointment. Time to stop making excuses and admit that he’s a big part of the problem. Stop blaming it on the line, defense, coaching, playcalling, receivers, etc.etc.. Unfriginbelievable. Orton just wins…in college…with the Bears….with the Broncos. End of discussion.
We get it, you love Orton.
Play another tune.

Can't a girl dream?
You’ve got your priorities seriously out of whack. In the Metrodome Cutler played alright between sacks. Meanwhile the defense allowed 500+ yards and 24 first half points. I won’t knock on either QB, but I will give them each a gold star for having to play in a putrid Chicago Bears offense (and in Cutler’s case a putrid Chicago Bears defense too) without committing harakiri.
Excuse me
but did I miss something? What has Kyle Orton won? National Championship? Nope!! Super Bowl? Nope!! Playoff game? Nope!! What exactly are you talking about?
Rocko is a huge Purdue/ Orton fan.
He says he is a life-long Bears fan, but if you are familiar with his work, he typically only compliments the Broncos and insults the Bears. When he joined SBN, he joined MHR first, and has nearly twice as much participation over there as he does here.
Just a couple of weeks ago, he thought that Urlacher was in the Bears starting lineup, so take it for what it’s worth.

I read the article and was wondering
Why Urlacher even agreed to do it. He would never do that with a local media hack and he will be dragged through the mud by Tuesday morning. His more damning comment was at the end about Forte when he said he can’t make anyone miss or said sarcastically that maybe the Vikings are the best tacklers ever. That comment and his previous one about establishing a running game don’t match. Forte has not been good and the Oline has been horrible. How the hell do you establish a running game with those parts?
He also spoke about how the defense would win games with big plays. Not this years version. Maybe #54 is the reason but the Bears D has been steamrolled game after game.

This is interesting!!
Maybe this is Urlacher’s way of requesting a trade!! Maybe he’s so disgusted with the organization that he wants out!!! You don’t see this very often where your star player and face of the franchise basically calls out the entire offense!!! I don’t know Brian Urlacher but he doesn’t seem to be a take shit kind of guy!!!
urlacher hasn't done anything in years
F him. cut him. take his salary and get somebody who can contribute.
my thought
If you think this season is bad, then ready for more of the same next year if the Bears trade Urlacher. I’m sitting here laughing to myself and thinking Bears as the new Detroit Lions of the NFC North. In my opinion he was telling it like it is and if someone on the team doesn’t like it they can prove him wrong. Someone had to call people out, and Lovie Smith and the rest of the gang isn’t going to do it. No one else on the team has the balls to do it, not even the “beast” Briggs or Kreutz. He’s doing what the coach should be doing, in my opinion. Stir the pot, light a fire!

Just Saying
The Raiders are 3-8 which is pretty damn near close the Bears 4-7. The teams that the Raiders and the Bears won against are 18-15 and 13-31 respectively.
What's the difference between Oakland and Chicago?
Al Davis can’t be fired at the end of the season.
In all seriousness, the joke that is the Raiders has these qualities:
- Two first-round picks from the last three years (Russell, McFadden) have either been benched for journeymen bad QBs or stuck to committee duty. By contrast, many of ours are either having trouble producing, staying on the field, or even staying on the team.
- Al Davis overdrafted Darrius Heyward-Bey and overpaid him, encouraging Michael Crabtree to hold out well into the season for more money. Reportedly he failed but he tried. We overpay a converted cornerback. Same difference.
- Plays in a division with a team who fired their offensive coordinator and traded for a guy that until last year didn’t make a start in the NFL or college. Congratulations, the Oakland Raiders are tied with the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West (split season series). By contrast, we are two games above Detroit in our division.
- Oakland has wins against KC (and a loss), Philly and Cincy. We have wins against Detroit, Cleveland, Seattle and Pittsburgh.
So… No, we aren’t the Raiders…
… Not yet anyway. … But that’s scary similar. I’m gonna have nightmares now.
by Steven Schweickert on Dec 4, 2009 12:39 PM CST up reply actions
Ouch
Actually that may change. I’m pretty sure that Al Davis has been selling whatever he’s got to keep pumping money into the Raiders. He’ll go broke eventually, which would actually be the best thing for the Raiders. We’ll still be stuck with the McCheapskeys who won’t go for broke trying to win. At least ideologically, I’m in Al’s corner. The fact, that he’s a nutcase is the only thing working against him.
there is still room for the bears in the new lions resort, right beneath the raiders. :(

Man that was dumb
Urlacher was out all weekend partying with Michael Silver. 10 bucks says he was hammered.
In all seriousness, I didn’t think it was that bad, but it was pretty dumb. I’m sure everyone will be grownups about it. Brian was doing exactly what I do on Sunday. Watch the game and swear about how awful the Bears are playing and which calls should have gone our way. The difference is no one gives a rat’s ass what I think because I’m not supposed to be the heart of the Bears defense.
If that’s the worst that comes out (Silver had 36 hours to cherry pick his quotes) then I don’t think there’s cause for concern. Still, Urlacher should have known better (Brian, do you know what Michael Silver does for a living? Bet you do now). I don’t care what he said; it’s not even really that bad (if anyone should be angry it’s Matt Forte). But, Brian Urlacher is a team captain, a leader, and he made me question whether he deserves those titles.
urlacher is a fool
there are so many problems with his comments. 1, we won with “bears football” back when we had a pretty good o-line, and a very good defense. now, our defense is awful, and our o-line is maybe the worst in the game. playing “bears football” which means running the ball a lot, would mean forte for 1 yard, forte for 2 yards, cutler incomplete with 2 linemen in his face, punt, all game long, and after the punt, the other team marches 75 yards for a touchdown. 2, matt forte is not a speed back that makes people miss…he strength is waiting for holes and then hitting them. maybe he’s seriously regressed this year, but who the hell knows, because whereas last year he waited and find a hole, this year, there are no freaking holes because the o-line is garbage. if urlacher REALLY wanted to be the team leader, he would have called out the coaching and the d-linemen and o-linemen. that’s where the biggest failure this year lies.
You all can knock big 54 all you want
but i like what he said. He makes sense, the bears have always prided their game on running the ball first and defense. I understand we have a franchise QB now, who was in a few pro bowl games, but the identity has changed. Change is good, but too abrupt of change can make your head spin. Besides that, none of us are in the position to challenge urlacher’s expertise on what has changed on his team. We are not on the practice field, we are not in the locker room. We dont know what the team is happy about or what they feel is lacking since the change of “status” (turning from a run team to a passing team). He is frustrated, he is not able to help, so he probably needed to get this off his chest. Let the guy air out his grievances in peace.

this is the part I question...Does he really believe in lovie, and does he really want to play for him, or is he just being PC???
"I believe in Lovie, and I hope I get to play for him for a long time," he said. "I really think we’ll come back stronger than ever next year, and then everything will take care of itself. err, gotta stop with the enter button
Players like Lovie cause he’s a wimp, aka “Player’s coach”. No tackling in practice? Yes please. Player’s want to get paid and not work very hard, Lovie lets that happen hence they like playing for him. They’re just not playing to win for him anymore.
This is blown out of proportion
You have a player here in Brian Urlacher, who is a face of a franchise. He’s a Pro Bowl calibur linebacker. He was the leader of this team. Now he is injured. The man is frustrated, just like everyone posting things on here. We are all calling for coaching changes, personell changes, management changes, etc. Urlacher makes a comment , probably one that most of us have made from one time or another, and now he is a cancer, he needs traded, etc. Whether you love or hate Jay, he has made some purely stupid plays. Has Forte run with confidence this year? No he hasn’t. Someone had commented on a different post that Forte seems to get tackled by a lot of arm tackles this year. I have to agree with that. He hasn’t made people miss. Yes the defense has gotten blasted this year, but look at some other things. How many 3 and outs do we have to start games? How much longer does the defense stay on the field because the offense cannot pick up a single first down. Sure Urlacher blasted the offense, he’s a defensive player. I’m sure any offensive player would be more prone to blasting the defense in the same situation. Urlacher is not the cancer here, losing football games is the cancer. Losing makes people crazy. You become paranoid. You look over your shoulder. You start to point fingers. Yes, I agree that you need to look at yourself when criticizing, and Urlacher probably should not have said those things publicly, but something needed to be said. Maybe it will light a fire under Cutler, the o-line, Forte and the rest, to play with some heart, some conviction. I think Urlacher said some things that the coaching staff should be saying. That is a whole other post in and of itself, but Urlacher is acting like a leader. Sometimes the truth hurts.
Urlacher was slamming Cutler in training camp, before the season started.
This has nothing to do with Urlacher’s frustrations about this season. Hell he isn’t even playing so what gives him the right to come out and be publicly critical of his QB? The Bears defense hasn’t been good in over 3 years and that’s with Urlacher playing. Does he make a difference? Yes. Does it change the way this season has went? No.
He’s jealous that he’s no longer the face of the franchise. Pure and simple. As far as him being a leader. This is the same guy that moaned and complained about wanting more money even though he already had a new contract. That extra 10 million would’ve went toward the O-line or our receiving core but know we had to pacify our great leader.
This isn’t 2005. The defense is more responsible for losses this year than any other part of our team so no one on that side of the ball, including Urlacher should be throwing shots at the QB. And him saying that Orton is a winner crap is just one meathead talking to the rest of the meatheads out there. He knows it wouldn’t make a difference at all. He’s an idiot and needs to just shut the hell up just make sure he’s ready to go next season
Be careful Chad
You’re making too much sense. There is a mountain of fear and denial going on at WCG. Even Urlacher is no longer off limits to the attacks. He’s only the greatest Bear player since the 85 team. I wonder what Walter Payton(God rest his soul) would be saying about this team? Would he be attacked as well for criticism?
Urlacher may be a great player
but that does not prevent him from saying stupid things, obvioulsy.

I think it's important not to pick sides in this (percieved) battle.
Brian is frustrated with the team’s performance, a little jealous of Jay, and occasionally will make comments like this. Does it mean we should trade him and consider him a traitor? No. Does it mean we should side with him and point fingers at Jay and Forte? No. We, as fans, need to look at it objectively.
I’ve been a little pi**ed at Forte over the past 7 weeks or so. Sure he has no holes, but instead of forcing his way for at least a few extra yards, he’s been dancing around at the line and not running with the conviction he did last year.
I disagree with Brian, however, in his analysis of the defense. As in we don’t have one. Especially not like what we’ve had in years past. So we can’t just play ball control O and hope to score a few points. Cutler has to air it out because we are down by 2 scores by halftime.
Maybe his quotes were taken out of context. Maybe he had a few too many and started to wax on about the not to distant glory days when HIS defense was mighty, when KO didn’t make mistakes, and when we played good (not great) football. Then again, maybe he’s grown a bit bitter and is taking a few potshots now that things are falling apart, he’s no longer our star, and he’s on the decline. Who knows? What I do know is that while this is interesting, its not really anything to get flustered over. I agree with TrialsBass in his post above.
Not to mention Urlacher is a competitor
And losing, getting beat, missing a tackle does not sit well with him. For himself and his team.
+1 on the Losing is the cancer. The players have to be frustrated as hell. Shoot Urlacher makes a comment and he is now “the cancer”? Shoot we have people punching people that are face down on the field and Urlacher is the problem?
This guy should have head phones on and be on the sideline, trying to motivate and helping HH in game situations, analysis.
One is not acting like a leader
when he makes ridiculous statements singling out the offense. Real leaders keep their heads about them when the going gets tough. Unfortunately that cannot be said of Urlacher.

Urlacher needs to just shut up
Everytime they pan to him on the sidelines hes seems to always be joking and shooting the shit with someone. At least when Mike Brown was hurt he seemed to be more involved with LEADING the team than Brian does. He may be the greatest Bear of MY lifetime but this is just some unnecessary criticism from him. Thanks for speaking up when our team is out of it and youre sitting at your brothers place while your team is getting embarrassed by our division rivals.
Easy to talk when your sitting at your couch like the rest of us isnt it. And isnt this the guy that gets all shitty with the media everytime they get negative on him and now hes no better than any of them now. Trust me he wouldnt be calling anyone out if he was a part of this debacle of a season. He wants the Bears to go back to being a running team and a defensive team. But problem with that is we have no run game and no defense. Cmon Brian wake up and watch a game, everytime they go to the Bear Ball in the first quarter we have 2 three and outs and we are down 14-0 before you know it.

Twitterpated with Cutler?
Cutler had all of the things that are being asked for last year: Outstanding offensive line and an all star wide reciever. He still cost the Broncos games with the same turnovers that he is putting the Bears through right now. Urlacher is probabaly tired of the over the top romance that people have with Cutler.
