Quick Hits: Cowher and Weis

Wcg_thumb_link_medium
Courtesy of WCG'er Just Dave, there's a couple of stories worth mentioning in BearsLand this afternoon:

First, even more talk about the Bears reaching out to Bill Cowher.

Second, reports that Charlie Weis is finished in South Bend.

After seeing the Bears completely manhandled in 6 of their past 7 games, upper management might be getting a bit restless.  I know the fan base is.

Crap!

When you go to somebody's house, you don't crap on their floor. Being a fan of one team does NOT give you license to be a dick to fans of another.

Corollary: When people are visiting your house and behaving themselves, them being a fan of a different team is NOT a reason for you to piss in their beer.

i don't know of the chances

…but I think it should happen.
By the way if you put glasses on the picture of Cowher above, he’d look too much like Brad Childress. Cowher looks a lot worse than that picture and his teeth are bad- just the kind of hardnosed coach we need!

upgrading talent. Angelo needs to go first.

I think thats more on Lovie

Have you noticed half the players use to play for Lovie? Plus Lovie not having the balls to say no.

by Daseabeez on Nov 30, 2009 3:25 PM CST up reply actions

Dont get me wrong

I do want the whole crew to go. just saying

by Daseabeez on Nov 30, 2009 3:29 PM CST up reply actions

Angelo can't draft. He hits on a later round guy and

gets credit for his hidden gem, but look at all of last years picks who are inactive. From 2002 through 2008, I think Angelo drafted 29 guys in the first 4 rounds. If all of Berrien, Hester, Olsen, Williams, Forte, and Bennett are included as successes, he has 11 wins out of the 29.

I want a GM with a philosophy and the ability to identify talent on both sides of the ball. I’m sick of Lovie, but believe no #1 that a GM can make good picks that fill gaps and provide a talent lift in the first 4 rounds better than 25-40% of the time.

by N Oakley on Nov 30, 2009 4:21 PM CST up reply actions

You forgot Briggs(3rd. round in ’03) and Harris(1st rd. in ’04).

Angelo does suck at drafting guys, but I think Lovie should be the first to go. Our defense has been pretty horrible since he took over playcalling.

by GouldisGold on Nov 30, 2009 4:33 PM CST up reply actions

Olsen and Forte

They’re still good, but grand deficiencies around them have lowered their expected production.

Didn't forget.

Berrien, Hester, Olsen, Williams, Forte & Bennett don’t add up to 11. Also included Alex Brown, Tillman, & Vasher. Probably should be 12 and include Manning.

at daver's request, Let's frontload this B**ch!

by N Oakley on Dec 1, 2009 11:46 AM CST up reply actions

I wasn't saying I want him to stay.

Just saying if we had a coach that will tell him who to draft I’m pretty sure that JA will listen. Lovie doesn’t know talent at all either so JA is just shooting in the dark. I’m sure whatever if any change happens they will both go. I don’t care who we have calling what as long as we are a contending football team with some fire.

by Daseabeez on Nov 30, 2009 5:22 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think that is true

Jauron had personnel rights before JA was hired on, thats why Jauron got fired. So JA could pick his own guys. He wants and likes his power.. as he should i guess. Not that i think he is good at it or anything..

by GtM on Dec 1, 2009 12:16 AM CST up reply actions

Thats where I don't think Cowher will work

Cowher will certainly demand player drafting rights. JA will not relinquish the strangle hold he has, even if it is slowly killing the Bears organization, breath by breath draft by draft

by TheMan1 on Dec 1, 2009 9:57 AM CST up reply actions

I was not defending or do i want JA to stay

I think he is smart enough to know to listen to a proven head coach.

by Daseabeez on Dec 1, 2009 11:27 AM CST up reply actions

I really hope not.

As for Weis, he’s only welcome on the Bears if he arrives with a good head coach.

by N Oakley on Nov 30, 2009 3:20 PM CST up reply actions

I don't care who we get

I just want a good team. And a SB win in the near future.

by Daseabeez on Nov 30, 2009 3:52 PM CST reply actions

no he won't

Angelo is now under the guise of everyman for himself and he is going to fire lovie in order to save his own ass. he said it, he lives and dies with lovie so in order to stop that he’s going to do whatever he can to save himself. but since he’s terrible at everything whatever he does will still screw us in the end

by frenchbears113 on Nov 30, 2009 4:38 PM CST up reply actions

What a difference 8 months makes.

It seems like yesterday when Angelo traded for Cutler and everyone just loved him.

by GouldisGold on Nov 30, 2009 4:47 PM CST up reply actions

So Cowher wants to coach either the Bears and Texans

Well it wouldn’t make sense for the Texans to Fire Kubiak sense he is a good coach himself and the Texans are a good team in a tough division. .So if its true and the management capialize (which i doubt) then fire lovie’s happy meal looking self (rather non emotional meal) and get Cowher!

by T.Moore on Nov 30, 2009 5:51 PM CST reply actions

stop making sense around here.

to bad no matter what happens next year will probably be a rebuilding year.

by Daseabeez on Nov 30, 2009 6:00 PM CST up reply actions

Whoever they bring in

And I still think it’s a long-shot, given the fact that they’d still owe Mr. “No Emotion” $11 million after this season.

The new coach had better get himself squared away with a new OC and a professional, experienced QB coach. Then he’s going to have his work cut out for him trying to rebuild next year with no 1st or 2nd round picks in the draft.

Questions

Cowher….Ok, I can see him as the HC. Good track record. Some are throwing out the possibility of a dual role…HC/GM. Exactly what experience does he have in management and player personnel?
Wies….I know he was a good OC with the Patriots. Will the Bears allow him to bring in the Patriots offensive scheme?
Also, he’s good friends with McDaniels…Will he want to keep Cutler? He will want a system type QB. Is this a mismatch for Jay? I’m assuming that if Weis is hired, then Lovie stays? Angelo stays?

by rocko1 on Nov 30, 2009 9:41 PM CST reply actions

they would both be fired!

If one is fired the other one will go as well. They are scheme guys. JA and Lovie will both go and should go.

Finally someone

with some common sense. It’s like nobody realizes that they just got a team with talent to fit there scheme. Now that said talent is gone or ageing rapidly people are finally realizing how truly bad JA is at evaluating talent. Look at Dungy same scheme but with someone(polian) who can evaluate and add talent.

Cowher won't fix this mess by himself

As much as I want to see Bill Cowher as the next head coach of the Chicago Bears, that by itself will not change the fortunes of this team. There has to be a complete changing of the guard, Jerry Angelo has to be fired as well. The main problem with this team isn’t “fire”, or “passion”, it’s TALENT. If you compare the Bears roster from top to bottom with all of the top teams in the NFL, it’s embarrassing. And that my friends, falls at the feet of Jerry Angelo. The Bears need to clean house and bring in either Mike Holmgren or Bill Parcells as GM/President. Then the Bears can start drafting like a top NFL team, which will make things easier for the new head coach.

by tylow23 on Nov 30, 2009 11:11 PM CST reply actions

would be happy....

as long as we get Weis i would be happy with Lovie staying around, i really dont see Angelo getting fired but there is always hope or at least maybe he will change….just watched the saints pummel the patriots, which we had sean payton as a coach haha or just one of their coachs, their defensive backs are amazing…

by bearsfan87 on Nov 30, 2009 11:27 PM CST reply actions

why?

Weis has done nothing since he left New England and NE’s offense is still good. They went 16-0 without him. Nobody from that coaching tree has met any of their expectatios. We need to quit bringing in losers and bring in a winner. If we clean house we need to hire one og the big 3 names out there. Holmegren has already said he wants 2 be a GM. Hire him as gm then if Cowher doesn’t want to be just a coach find someone else. We can’t have a coach/gm. It has not and will not work.

by Ryan21 on Dec 1, 2009 6:38 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

I wouldn't say "nothing"

He did build a pretty darn good offense- his problem was the lack of recruitment of good defenesive players. If he’s relegated to just the offense he’ll be productive and successful.

Lukewarm on Cowher

I don’t think I’m alone in my opinion of how the current available coaches should be ranked.

1. Shanny (Jim Bates as OC)
2. Gruden (Holmgren as GM)
3. Cowher (Weis as OC)
4. Long shots- Jim Harbaugh or Pete Carmichael Jr.

I forgot about him, but I don’t think he’s seasoned enough to take over as a HC just yet. He’s in a similar situation as Jason Garrett a few years ago.

Kyle Shanahan

would not be that bad if his pops took over the front office with ‘special’ duties like making sure that Kyle has what he needs to be successful. Is it unlikely that we could have a Shanahan takeover in Chicago? Kubiak may be gone in Houston and Kyle may be available??

Kyle as QB coach and move on up

Good thing Father and son, start grooming the kid (if he is willing to sit and learn and not wanting to move up right away, you know prove something to old Dad) we could have our “franchise” coaches

by TheMan1 on Dec 1, 2009 10:01 AM CST up reply actions

Not willing to move up?

Kyle as a QB’s coach would be a step down! He’s the OC right now, why would he do that? As is, he couldn’t even become our OC without an additional title to supplement the sideways move.

I agree

The offense isn’t really the problem in Houston. Normally, the entire staff is “relieved of duties,” but I imagine he may be retained if a defensive-minded HC is hired.

Gruden is staying put

He signed an extension with ESPN to stay in the booth. I was under the impression he’d stay there and wouldn’t go back to the sideline.

by GallopingGhost on Dec 1, 2009 12:57 AM CST up reply actions

I read that too

As long as we bring in an offensive guy. Next year don’t have to be a rebuilding year. On offense we can be so much better if we can fix the line. Drew Brees has so much time to throw. So does Favre. So does every other good qb. Cutler has none. Our d can be much better if healthy and if our offense scores point. Defense does not win championships no more. You need to be able to put points on the board. We need offensive minded people in here as gm and hc.

by Ryan21 on Dec 1, 2009 6:44 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

"Defense does not win championships no more"

Yeah right.Steelers,Giants,Ravens,Colts (got to the SB because all of a sudden their D became the steel curtain), 06 Bears got there because of Defense, Saints is an elite team because of the D FINALLY being good,Vikings Have great D,Pats Defense,85 Bears defense and the Cardnals D getting turnovers last years playoffs.Offense wins games.DEFENSE wins CHAMPIONSHIPS PERIOD.

by T.Moore on Dec 1, 2009 9:17 AM CST up reply actions

Steelers won because their offense in the SB

Arizona was movin the ball all over that defense. You can’t have a terrible defense but without a high power o you can’t win championship. The Ravens were a long time ago. The game is being changed to favor the offense so much now that it is so hard to have a dominate defense. Maybe for a year or two you can but it seems that they go from great to not very good so fast. NE,NY,CHI,CAR,PIT. None of those Def scare you anymore. Seems like the past few SBs the offense has been the reason for victory. The defense will get you there but the teams go pass happy and win throwing the ball.

by Ryan21 on Dec 1, 2009 10:47 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

I remember in last years SB

That a big INT return turned the tide of that game.

by T.Moore on Dec 1, 2009 12:00 PM CST up reply actions

You can win without a high power O.

Without a good D you wont win anything.Look at the Colts they always had a great O but didnt win anything,Why?Cause their D sucked. You have to win 2 out of 3 phases of the game mostly by offense AND defense. As soon as the Colts had a D they started winning. The Giants O isnt really a great one but they won because they put Brady on his ass all game the D dominated them.

by Dane Noble on Dec 1, 2009 11:26 AM CST up reply actions

defense used to win championships

A good offense beats a good defense 9/10 times. Saints will win the SB because of their offense. When they beat the Vikings it will be their offense that squashes the Vikes defense(if they meet). The only double negatives were in my grammar not my points. 85 bears were decades ago. The last dominate d that won games with a bad offense was Bal and that is going on 10 years ago. The game has evolved into an Offensive game. Qb’s are passing more than ever and putting up more points than ever. If we will ever win a SB again, it will be because of Offense and the Qb play. You remember the big plays on offense in recent super bowls. Holmes td catch on a perfectly thrown ball. Tyree catch when Manning extends the play. Peyton Manning and Addai beating us when our qb sucked and gave the game away on a pick six. Brady’s game winning drives. Willie Parker bustin off a 70 yard td run. Offense rules the day. All I want is a HC that knows how to put a good offense on the field.

by Ryan21 on Dec 1, 2009 11:53 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

Look at the Broncs last year

2nd best offense D sucked couldn’t go anywhere. Now they have a winning record why?Cause of the D.They are winning cause of the D (and sometimes luck).

by T.Moore on Dec 1, 2009 12:41 PM CST up reply actions

one last thing

You can’t have a bad defense and win the SB. A decent D can do it. In 06 our d held Ind to 21 or 22 points and Hester gave us a 7 point lead. Our offense blew that game. Grossman,Benson,Turner, and Moose were the reason we lost that game. And Kreutz. I think he causes fumbled snaps. We should have won that game. Indy’s d didn’t stop us. Our offense stopped itself. Still breaks my heart. My whole paycheck to take me and the wifey to the nfc champ game only to watch them lose the sb while in the Keys just south of Miami where they were playing. This team is like a cheating wife and we just keep taking her back. Heatbreaking and I hate being a bears fan.
