Chiefs release RB Johnson and what it could mean for the Bears
Let's face it, our anemic running game and injuries to 3 of our 4 runningbacks is terrible. we are 28th in the run for ypg, 11th for passing yds and 19th in total offense. We could use a strong powerback to relieve forte. We did use two back in previous years one as a speed outside rusher and one as a powerback. this may help out our team if we gave him a year contract. it really cant hurt our team since i believe we have lost jones for the season, AP (the awesome one) for 2 or 3 more weeks, and wolfe for 2-4 weeks at least. Yes he has some problems with being a good role model but a year (or half of one) really cant hurt us. what do you guys think?
my stats came off the nfl.com page
Johnson is a 2 time pro bowl back with 5996 yds, 55 Rush TDs, 1640s rec yards and 6 TDs. I would probably throw an offer out to him if i were JA. but then again i would have never drafted grossman either haha

The Redskins are already expressing interest.
No suprise there. Let them sign him. Even with Wolfe injured, Johnson is too much of a headache. And on top of that, he’s done. He will turn 30 later this month, and he is averaging 2.7 yards per rush.

Do you think he would be a headache when he knows his money is on the line if he doesnt behave??

by BigAppleBearsFan on Nov 10, 2009 10:03 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Slaton and Moats are two guys that can run to the outside but I don’t trust up the middle. Chris Brown has looked not good at all. Larry Johnson could take Chris Brown’s role.
by brands735 on Nov 10, 2009 10:05 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
If that did happen and then I'd like to see the Bears pick Brown up
He’d be a good compliment to Forte and is a big back with speed to get to the outside. His biggest problem has been durability, so since Forte would be your primary RB and you only would give Brown 10-12 carries a game, that would be a good combination. He’s also a decent receiver out of the backfield.
He hasn’t looked bad except for the one fumble at the goal line this year. His yards per carry isn’t high because they use him in a lot of short yardage situations. He’d be cheap too, plus being a local kid, it could be a good thing for him to be back home again.
I just find it hard to believe that the Bears will be able to continue for 8 more games with only 2 backs, if Wolfe’s injury takes time to heal.
by BearFan611 on Nov 10, 2009 10:17 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Brown would be cheap but if we were going to pick him up in the off-season, why wouldn’t we just re-sign Kevin Jones?
by brands735 on Nov 10, 2009 12:34 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I'm talking about picking him up now and have another back available in case Forte or AP goes down.
by BearFan611 on Nov 10, 2009 12:47 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Oh
That is assuming the Texans sign LJ then release Brown. I don’t even know that they release Brown if they sign LJ. Shanahan (OC for the Texans) has a huge crush on running the ball. He would love rotating 4 runners to balance out what is right now a really strong passing attack.
by brands735 on Nov 10, 2009 12:50 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Right, I thought that's what your original post was referring to, that LJ would replace Brown.
Even in the off-season, though, if he were available, I’d take a strong look at him as a complimentary back.

Yeah, I believe that you may be onto something about Jones, since we put him on IR in the pre-season. But you do know that Peterson played last week, right?

No but what if Forte goes down or AP again, you do realize we need more than 2 RBS right??
You cant just think everyones going to stay healthy with this injury riddled team. Im not looking at him as a potential savior to our running game, more of a much needed backup for depth. How much would he really cost. How dumb would he be if acted up?? How much of a risk would it be to have him for the next 8 games as a trial run??

With Wolfe out we have 3 RB's
Forte, AP, Mckie.
My point was we have a back up right now, we need someone to fill the ST void more than the back up RB role.

Im speaking hypothetically, in the events that if Forte got hurt.
You wouldnt have to take AP off ST than, cause if Forte did in fact get hurt than AP wouldnt be starting and playing ST.
Yes with Forte and AP we dont need anyone, but AP has already had injury problems and Forte is one play away from us really being screwed in the RB situation.
I just read Maurice Hicks was tried out but not signed I dont look at him as a better option than LJ even if he does play ST. And another thing about special teams, doesnt Toub just turn anyone into ST studs, Im sure you were one of the many that laughed when you first saw Wolfe making tackles on Kick Coverage units, than all of a sudden he leads our ST unit in tackles, Toub could turn me and you into ST studs, I think backup/Depth at RB is a bigger concern right now.

So lets just say for the fun of this argument that Forte did get hurt.
You do realize we only have one Fullback, so you would just have us run single set backfields or risk having our 2 guys that are available playing at the same time. And to your point of AP if he has to be the starter he wouldnt be on ST.
Bottom Line is with Wolfe out, we are in the market for a BACKUP running back and he is available so there is no reason why we shouldnt make a play for him.

I just heard them say that Bell is still on the Practice squad.
And Aromashadu will likely take Wolfes spot on ST. And we are going to roll the dice with only 2 RBs this week. I just think that is stupid, you have to be ready for ALL variables, If Forte goes down in this game we are screwed.

weeks seem to drag on for me and it feels like we are still in week 2 to me. anyways it was just an idea. i know the problem is with the oline but somebody who can beat the hell out of a defensive line and give us a little more depth wouldnt be bad. i mean we are down to 2 runningbacks for about a month with wolfe going down. we really need to think about getting a different conditioning staff. i dont think any team is as banged up as we are and we didnt even have a post season to play last year.

Walter Payton would have a tough time running behind this o-line. They should be looking for lineman… Forte would be a league leader in rushing on the Bengals, Giants, or any other team with a decent line.

The core problem with the run game is not the RB position
it is with the O-line. Forte is very good as he shows when they give him some daylight. The problem is the O-line rarely gives him daylight. It would not surprise me to find out Forte gets hit in the backfield more than any other back in the NFL.

I think it could actually be argued either way.
On one hand, people have become much more educated on personnel, schemes, tendencies… and all of that is great.
On the other hand, you end up with a ton of people who only see the game in FF terms. I mentioned in a post one time how weird it was going to a sports bar with NFL Sunday Ticket, and being nearly the only one out of a couple hundred people that actually rooted for a team. Almost everyone was just watching games for stats
It’s really strange to see a person rooting for both teams on the field… whichever one has the ball at the time.
Oh, and it leads to endless amounts of FanPosts about “What’s wrong with Greg Olsen?” and “What’s wrong with Forte?”
You are all gentlemen (and ladies) and good judges of cheap whiskey.

One theory I have
is that FF has brought in many baseball fans… Baseball being so stat driven.
I believe many of these same folks apply the same (numbers) mentality to football…
Problem is it doesn’t apply to football. You’ll hear Fantasy guys say, “Forte sucks!” Which you, me and many others know that statement is ignorant. But when these fantasy guys draft him in the top 3 or 4 picks and he doesn’t show worthy numbers, they say the “Forte sucks!”, while not understanding the big picture.
FYI, I do play fantasy and I drafted Forte in both leagues… Not because I thought he was great, but because I thought the O-line would be better than they were last year (they’re not). I also drafted him because I’m a homer, glutton for punishment ;-)

Who woulda thought that out of Pace, Omiyale, and Shaffer, we are a big 0/3 in those acquisitions? Pace has shown some flashes, so maybe he should be a 0.5
But yeah, it was funny headed into the Bye week, coming off 3 straight wins, we had people screaming from their FF soapboxes that “Something is wrong with Olsen!”…

I admit, I criticized Olsen for not making tough catches… But that’s as far as I could go (he did look solid last week). Sure I’d prefer if he were a better blocker, but the Bears knew that would be a growing pain when he was drafted. So it’s unrealistic to expect too much from that aspect.

This team lacks talent, so get it wherever you can.
sure the oline sux, but Larry Johnson is a huge upgrade over Wolfe. LJ keeps Forte healthy, which keeps LJ healthy. if LJ can be signed to a cheap 2 year deal DO IT.
There will always be arguments against adding guys (darren sharper is too old, etc.), but now’s not the time. We need talent. I was pissed when i saw recently signed Ty Law come in for the Broncos last night… as if the Bears are so secure with their talent they need not look for replacements, especially in the secondary.
this team has no 1st or 2nd round picks. “the bears have no intention of paying anybody”. The notion of passing on the LJ train in hopes something better comes along is ridiculous. sign him today and we have an effective 1-2 rb punch today, all other future scenarios of improvement anywhere on this team are frankly fantasies.

I cant say for sure, but I would bet the mortgage that some words similar to that have been thrown around in the Soldier Field lockerroom. And thats ok, I dont crucify some1 for using a gay slur. Im not defending it, but its silly to suggest that because of that, he should not be considered by any other team. But anyways, thats not the point. I was saying the bears should consider it. They are down to AP and Forte. God borbid one of them is injured, but if it happens, the bears, as if they already aren’t, would be in a world of hurt. But, I know that will not happen. The management will again make the wrong move, as they are so infamous for doing, and not make any effort to get him.
