Week 9, Reality hits...and denial

Well, here we are half of our games played and we're sitting at 3rd in our division looking up at the Vikes and Pack.  Wow, did it hurt to write that...but I am coming to grips with who the Bears really are.

I think deep down, I knew the condition of our team despite the wins that we have.  Somehow, I held on to hope that we were just a couple of games from letting the pieces mesh and becoming a really good team, but now I am pretty certain that can't be true.  Why?

Simply put, we can't win the battle in the trenches.  The O and D lines are horrific.  We can't generate or stop pressure and our team is looking Pop Warnerish at times because the opposition can do whatever they want.

I understand there is no newsflash here, but I think I'm trying to heal with this post.

I also understand we basically have no draft.  I also understand that there is way too much money to be paid to Lovie to expect any kind of head coaching change.

But, you know what?  I still love the Bears.  I'm still going to watch every remaining game.  I'm still going to hold out hope for a playoff spot....why?  Because I believe.  Maybe I believe more than the players and the coaches, kind of like on Sunday when I thought we might actually come back in the second half....

Maybe it's not realistic, but I am still holding on to hope for some revenge against the Vikings and Pack.  There are still 8 games left...If Lovie can flip on his own emotional switch and the team's as well, somehow we can still pull out a miracle.

Message to the Bears:  It's not too late to play angry and Bear down...New season starts Thursday in San Fran against Samurai Mike!!!  LET'S DO THIS!!!

Ok, thanks for letting me vent.

A quick question for you:

The Bears need to win the next 6 out of 8 games to even have a chance to get a wild card spot. Would you rather have the Bears rally and get a playoff spot or have them not make the playoffs for the 3rd consecutive year and have Lovie possibly lose his job? I don’t believe in Lovie and Co. running this team anymore. Lovie cannot even run his Tampa-2 scheme which he swears on to any degree of precision. I love the Bears and want them to succeed but many things happen for a reason. Hell, we’d still have Grossman under center had we won that Super Bowl!

Don’t the Bears always do JUST enough to miss the playoffs? I am going to watch and if we win a game get a slight glimpse of hope but I know reality, reality this year is and has been heartbreak

I'm with you

But two things…

First, they are not going to fire Lovie. I think they should…I agree with you, he has lost this team. He has no emotion, no common sense. This team is a disaster, and I don’t just blame Lovie but see a perfect storm of horrible things combining.

Second, I ascribe to the addage that you don’t get better by losing (except in Grossman’s case as you pointed out rightly). I think we keep fighting and trying to progress just for the simple fact that I want the Broncos to get the worst possible picks. That’s thanks to all the jackass Bronco fans that kept showing up. Funny how we don’t hear from them after Orton hucked three INT’s last night and their offense scored a whopping 3 points…hmmmmm

I am going to keep watching also

I am with you I still love the Bears. While they don’t cover games in my area I will still find a way (thanks cpu)

As for Lovie, as much as I want him gone, I do not think it will happen. McC has already stated she will not pay him his contract and another coach too. So that leaves us with another year of him and his worn out Tampa 2.

Here is hoping Tommie Harris shuts up and plays his butt of to raise his trade stock (which still will not be much). Also, some more lucky late round picks in the draft. Heck Angelo does better with the late ones than early anyways.

Honestly im still having hope for this year

But im going to be more excited next year with Urlacher back and these young rookies like Afalava and Knox with a year of experience and also Cutler building up chemistry with our WR

Its irritating being completely emotionaly invested in a team..

..that constantly underachieves from top to bottom. Regardless of how crushing the blows like last sunday are i’ll always come back for more because i love the Bears. Players change, coaches and records changes, ownership doesn’t change, i still stay with my Bears.

I would like to believe that there is a way...

but that means some sort of change would have to occur. This change would have to be monumental given that the defense is simply awful. The defense is led by Lovie and while I do NOT believe his outward emotions make them play badly, his lack of motivation on them is evident. Lovie has not shown even the slightest propensity for change, in fact, quite the opposite. More than once, he has a tendency to keep a player at a position that can’t or won’t do the job long after it is obvious to the most casual observer they are not playing the position well enough to start; say Omiyale, Harris, Manning, Vasher. The Tampa-2 scheme does not fit the current roster as well as it did 3-5 years ago. While the entire staff, including JA, are to blame for this, the fact remains that it is simply not the scheme for this team at this time.

So now is the dilemma, what to do about Lovie. If you fire him now this season is obviously shot. Even if a “great” coach were hired, it would take weeks for him just to learn the players names. Further, the only realistic window to do this at all would be this Friday as the Bears have the longest span between two games left this season. Yes, the Bears might play well for a new coach for a game here or there, but it would likely be “feel good” wins after a shot at the playoffs was out of reach anyway. While I would prefer this scenario for a number of other reasons, it would not get at the point of your post.

Therefore, I think, to a player, the defense and offense need not to do the soul searching that Alex Brown, etc. have referred to, but a true gut check. Simply put MAN UP AND BEAR DOWN. I’d rather see Harris thrown out of a game for taunting someone who he drove back 3 yards. The point is, I think only the players can right this ship now. The coaches, IMO, are the problem and do not seem able to change. The dilemma becomes, if the players do play well, would Lovie get the credit and remain to the further detriment of this this team next year.

When you find yourself in a hole, STOP DIGGING!!!

Agree with you 100 percent

I wish the players could get motivated by fans like us!!

Agree with everything you've said, and, yes, Lovie would definitely get credit if they come back...

whether he deserves it or not. It’s a “catch-22” where you want to see them start fighting but you want to see Lovie fail because, even if he was instrumental in getting them going, why the hell did it take him this long to figure it out. One of the things that Aikman kept pointing out during the game when the Bears were starting a little bit of a comeback, was their lack of a sense of urgency. That, again, is the personality of the HC. Everything is “wait and see”, “we’ve got time”, “there’s a lot of football left”, and in the meantime the other team is changing and adjusting and kicking our ass. Look at Peyton Manning, he looks like he’s running a 2-minute offense during their first series and doesn’t let up throughout the entire game. Not just because of the “no huddle” but they always seem to have an edge to them. Lovie’s edge is dull and his teams play that way.

Cutler seemed to be audibling more this game

and it worked much better than in previous weeks
we lost due to defensive colapse but I think Cutler calling the plays is the way to go

You're right, but I think what he was referring to was the time it was taking them between snaps.

They were walking around like it was early in the first quarter and using up valuable time. The other good point he brought up was when they let the 3rd quarter clock run down rather than hurrying to get another play in and taking advantage of a free timeout with the quarter ending. Cutler should know better, but another sign of bad coaching, especially since they speak to him directly through the earpiece in his helmet.
