Devin Hester Unlikely To Play Versus Packers

Wcg_thumb_injury_medium
We've heard over the last couple of days that Devin Hester was not able to practice, but now signs are pointing to him being unable to play come Sunday.  Vaughn McClure, via his Twitter page, reported a few minutes ago that Hester will not practice today, and is unlikely to play Sunday.

McClure's words were a bit different in his full write-up, saying that "if Hester does not practice Friday, he will not play against the Packers on Sunday."

Lovie Smith said that he was comfortable with Knox, Bennett, and Aromashodu should Hester not be able to play.

Stay tuned.

Huh?
Lovie Smith said that he was comfortable with Knox, Bennett, and Aromashodu should Hester not be able to play.

No mention of Rashied?

It will be good to see DA get a full game of reps, any word on who’ll start?

by Lester A. Wiltfong Jr. on Dec 11, 2009 10:45 AM CST reply actions

Well, he sort of mntioned Rashied...
“We have confidence in them,’’ Smith said. ``Of course, they finished out the game last week. Devin Aromashodu has really stepped up. Guys are very comfortable with him. You know what Earl Bennett can do. You know what a guy like Johnny Knox can do, also. Rashied Davis. We rely on our tight ends, too. And of course, (Matt) Forte. "

He at least says his name…LOL.

As for who will start… Knox?

I would think it'd have to be Knox and Bennett

Knox and Bennett as 1 and 2, sometimes Knox and Aroma with Bennett slotted, maybe.

Possibly a lot of Split wide olsen, too.

I thought I remember in camp

They said Knox would only learn one position because they wanted to get him on the field. So they really shouldn’t or won’t bump him to a different position would they?

by GallopingGhost on Dec 11, 2009 12:12 PM CST up reply actions

I remember that too...

but the way this season has gone, I’d think that a lot of the rationalities from camp are long gone.

But to put a player

One of your best at that position, into a situation where he doesn’t know what he’s doing, that just seems stupid, crazy irrational. Oh wait I am talking about the coaching staff that has changed about 3 guys’ positions at will (Manning, Vasher, Graham, Hester)

by GallopingGhost on Dec 11, 2009 12:26 PM CST up reply actions

LOL

Well, to Knox’s credit, he did play both wideout and the slot in college, so hopefully it won’t be as bad as moving a CB to WR, or a CB to Nickle to FS.

Why I hate Lovie (not really, but seriously...)

That quote. Sorry, but “comfortable” with those guys as receivers… Chicago, we have a problem. Even with Hester in the lineup they are the worst receiving corps. in the NFL… What exactly, if anything, would make Lovie uncomfortable?

by No It All on Dec 11, 2009 11:46 AM CST up reply actions

I wouldn't say it's the worst WR corp,

but we are definitely hurting in that category because of the OL. If we could protect better, we could use the run to set up the pass… and if we could protect Cutler better, we could take advantage of our speed at WR in allowing down field routes to develop.

Cutler is one of the best play-action passers in the game… too bad no one respects the run.

by Dane Noble on Dec 11, 2009 11:54 AM CST up reply actions

the worst...

Top 2 WR on each team by receptions

Bears – Hester / Bennett – 99 rec
Ravens – Mason / Clayton – 97 rec
Bills – Owens / Evans – 74 rec
Panthers – Smith / Muhammad 87 rec
Browns – Massoquoi / Furrey – 52 rec
Cowboys – Austin / Williams – 84 rec
Broncos – Marshall / Royal – 98 recs
Lions – Johnson / Northcut – 76 recs
Jaguars – Sims-Walker / Holt – 96 recs
Chiefs – Bowe / Wade – 62 recs
Dolphins – Bess / Camirillo – 91 recs
Jets – Cotchery / Edwards – 64 recs
Raiders – Murphy / Higgins – 33 recs
Eagles – Maclin / Jackson – 90 recs
Chargers – Jackson / Floyd – 77 recs
49ers – Morgan / Crabtree – 68 recs
Rams – Avery / Amendola – 64 recs
Bucs – Bryant / Stroughter – 54 recs
Titans – Britt / Washington – 69 recs
Redskins – Moss / Randel El – 89 recs

I’m not saying that Hester and Bennett are better than every couple on this list, but Bennett is an improving young WR, Hester has made strides as a WR, not to mention Knox who appears to have the arrow pointing up on his career.

by Lester A. Wiltfong Jr. on Dec 11, 2009 12:41 PM CST up reply actions

While this is a great point...

and for me a point well taken, these numbers have more to do with the ineffective running game than great WR play. Hester and Bennett and Knox round out a good WR corps if this team had a legit #1 prototype WR. That being said, I see Hester as the only tradable player this coming offseason. Plus Knox is and easy drop in replacement as the “speed/slot/iso” guy with better WR skills and is younger anyway. Personally I like Hester and would love to see him succeed as a Bear. But when it comes down to improving the team, trading him may be a better option.

by LostInSTL on Dec 11, 2009 2:54 PM CST up reply actions

True

I did forget about Avery / Amendola…. Other than the rams and maybe the browns wrs, do you really think Hester / and Bennett are superior to the other tandems? if so, which ones?

Bennett – improving, yes. And had he been able to take that pass (yea that one) to the house last week I’d be excited about him… but right now, assuming he improves to his his maximum potential I still doubt whether or not he will be good enough to be considered a solid #2 (aka doody btw).

Hester on the other hand I am a big fan of. Have been since we were at the U. While he might be the most likely candidate for a trade I personally think trading him would be a bigger mistake than trading just about anybody else, as I think Hester has suffered more than anyone from the incompetence of this offence than any other individual, while also having the most upside.

I like Knox mucho so far… but not enough yet to pencil him in already for the next couple of years.

by No It All on Dec 11, 2009 6:29 PM CST up reply actions

I too would hate to see Hester go,

but if we keep Turner and our current offensive scheme then he might as well. It would probably be better for him. On the other hand, a different O-scheme and some plays that were specifically designed around him to utilize his specific skill set. Then he will develop and have a chance to be great here.

by Fridge72 on Dec 11, 2009 7:28 PM CST up reply actions

Both Hester and Knox...

are going to have success at the WR position because of their speed. They are almost the exact same size and speed. Knox has a slight edge in that he is younger and has played WR during college. The problem is the Bears do not play on a speed surface at Soldier field; where they play the most games. That limits their abilities to use speed to gain separation. Therefore, putting them in the slot helps them avoid bump coverages and gets them off the line clean on a consistent basis. I think they could coexist in the same offense, but it would have to be a spread style with many single-back sets and four wide looks. Currently the Bears employ too many (IMO) 2 TE sets. This is because the o-line cannot even handle 4 man D-lines, let alone blitzing LBs etc. Further, neither Knox or Hester can run great routes yet and both are still working on coverage recognition. Also, they both have to develop a “my ball” mentality and go get the underthrows and fight for the catches. What I would love to see is Olsen moved to an H-Back role where he motions on most plays so he cannot be doubled too easily and have Bennettt and some other larger WR (say DA) playing on the line where their size is an advantage on the outside moving in and having Hester/Knox on the inside moving out. This sets up natural picks and plays to the strengths of the talent, not having to mold the talent to the poorly planned offense.

Since it's not working now,

I would like to see the Bears start fiddling with it now. Green Bay fiddled with theirs and over the past few weeks have been able to keep Aaron Rogers mostly upright. I don’t like the way our coaches make adjustments, basically they don’t make any adjustments.

by Fridge72 on Dec 12, 2009 4:05 PM CST up reply actions

Sounds great,

Need to upgrade to O-line to make it work. Definitely like Hester or Knox better in the slot.

by Fridge72 on Dec 12, 2009 4:02 PM CST up reply actions

As much as I like Hester,

hope the injury isn’t serious, I’m glad he is out.

I want to see how Aromashodu and Cutler connect for an entire game. Isn’t it strange how we are getting injuries at the positions where we need to develop players for those positions. It’s almost as if the Football Gods will help the Bears even if Lovie and Angelo won’t.

by Fridge72 on Dec 11, 2009 11:02 AM CST reply actions

Umm..

who’s going be the punt returner? Bennett is listed as 2nd on the depth chart and took over against the Rams, but he doesn’t exactly have breakaway speed. Half of StL’s defense caught up with him on the 71 yard reception.

I would imagine that Knox will cover punt returns, and we'll see more Manning on kickoff returns.

This is, of course, working off of the assumption that we make the Packers punt very much.

Well, I’ve got a guy who has weekly contact with Lovie… maybe I’ll see if he can get that idea into his head for next year. :)

Not positive but...

doesn’t Vasher have experience returning punts as well? Make him earn those millions!

I heard he's confused with the play book because he's preparing to play every receiving position.

Oh wait different player, different year. SSDD.

This brings up a point

earlier in the year, the excuse for keeping Rashied on the active roster was his abilities on special teams, but now that the playoffs are out of reach (despite what Lovie’s halucinations say), how do you justify keeping a guy who is not part of your future and keeping the guy you drafted on the sidelines?

Rashied hasn’t messed up like he did consistenty last year, but does anyone honestly see him being part of this team after this season? Activate Iglesias and see what he has now that Hester is down with an injury. Split time with him, DA, Bennett, and Knox to see what your receiving corp of the future looks like.

Another example of bad personnel management and development, in my opinion.

by BearFan611 on Dec 11, 2009 9:41 PM CST up reply actions

The Browns' offense

Has improved dramatically since Jamal Lewis (having an Orlando Pace season at RB) was lost for the year, even if the numbers don’t show it.

Perhaps with Hester and his mediocre-at-best WR skills out, our WR corps can do something similar. I hope.

Gotta beat the Pack.

Is Jerry Angelo fired yet?
