Packers Get Victory Over Chicago

Wcg_thumb_game_medium
In true rivalry fashion, the game between the Packers and Bears at Soldier Field came down to the wire, unfortunately seeing Green Bay get the victory.  Chicago looked good on both sides of the ball at times, but errors and penalties ultimately ensured defeat.

Quick numbers:

Jay Cutler: 23/36, 209 yards, 2 TDs/ 2 INTs

Devin Aromashodu: 8 rec/ 76 yds/ 1 TD

Matt Forte: 12 carries/ 51 yds

Tommie Harris: 2 tackles, 1 sack, 1 QB hit

Lovie Smith: For the first time in his Bears career, he is swept by the Packers for the year.

Let us know your initial reactions.

I take it Kreutz didn't rise to the challenge?

I didn’t get a chance to see the game.

Eh, he did alright.

One of the face masks was fairly ticky tack, and the other was an inside beat which sucks, but I’d rather he face mask brutally and keep the QB safe than let him get smashed..

that facemask on matthews negated a big play

and letting him go through wouldn’t have done anything negative.

That's part of the problem

I don’t think anyone would miss Sheed being dressed. IMO it’s rediculous to not play someone cause of what could potentially happen on STS, or a numbers game. I also have a difficult time believing there isn’t someone who could play close to what Davis does.

it was sweet to finally see DA get some quality playing time

but utterly awful to watch almost everything else. 100+ yards in penaties, a lack of chemistry STILL between Jay and the WR (Knox today)… and an inability to get out of our own way.

I’m not usually one who cheers for someone to lose their job, but today should be the rock bottom we need to hit to clean house. But it won’t be. And thats the most upsetting thing.

Also. My head hurts.

Regarding JC

I would like to say there is a lot of miscommunication that goes on between JC and our WR. I think coaches needs to be blamed for that, Knox needs to learn to run proper route and know what JC is thinking, DA proved he can be a quality WR, and I honestly think with proper coaching we have a solid WR corp with a amazing QB (according to me). We just need to improve our coaching staff and see how we do next year.

I believe....

This franchise will in the long run do what it takes to make things right. As messed up as things are look at it this way…….Who expected us to have the balls to get Cutler? That showed me that at least this franchise has a pulse. Lovie(not this year) and Ron Turner will evenutally be fired and they will get the right personnel. If they don’t…… I will find Virginia…….Marry her and convince her through my youthful love and tenacity that I will now take control of the franchise and fire Lovie and his staff. I will then go woo Cowher and Weis and trade Olsen and Hester. At which point, I will then file for separation from Virginia citing irreconcilable differences seeing as how my job is done. Fire Lovie and GO BEARS!

2 indictments of coaching on full display today

1, DA playing great. 2, the mistakes on route running by our young WRs. these are mistakes that have kept happening all season long. your coaches can drill these out of you. i’d say you could blame the players entirely, but i dunno…knox is the main culprit, but if he was an idiot on this stuff, why does he run some routes so well? anyway, both of these things should be the nail in the coffin for the bears’ careers for all the coaches on the offensive side of the ball. lovie’s 2 TOs should kind of end his tenure as well, but we know that’s not gonna happen.

our best wide receiver has aparently been sitting on the bench all year. Thanks coaches.

Two Points of Silver Lining

1. D.A. – looked really good when finally given a real shot

2. Lovie’s incompetience was in FULL display as he waisted a time to then challenge and lose, effectively losing 2 TOs in one shot. How they could look at that, along with the rest of the season’s coaching debacles, and still have faith in him is beyond me. I understand his contract is difficult to deal with, but for the love of God, the man just does not have it anymore

DA finally playing and leading the team with 8 catches

Is another gaffe by Lovie and the coaching staff. Cutler has been calling to get DA on the field over and over again all throughout the season, and the coaching staff wouldn’t budge. He finally gets a start and leads the team in catches and targets and scores a TD.

Add that to the 13 penalties and the two timeouts wasted on one challenge and… well… you should have sealed your fate. Lovie’s gettin the axe, the Monday after the regular season is over.

The stupid! It BURNS!

It’s over. The only reason you would retain Smith after this season — and that supremely incompetent challenge — is money.

This is the worst Bears team I’ve seen since the end of the Jauron era, and it’s only marginally better than the mess that was the Wanny period. There’s just nothing to build on, and if we don’t buy a clue in the off-season we’re going to mentally wreck the best QB prospect we’ve had since McMahon.

And the prevailing wind happens to be blowing from Vichy.

Getting swept by the Packers

Absolutely unacceptable. Absolutely, positively, completely not acceptable. I’ve been a Lovie backer for a while, but he should not be allowed to leave the building with the title of Chicago Bears Head Coach still in possession.

This was absolutely embarrassing. The offensive line was atrocious – Chris Williams still sucks, no matter what position he plays. The WR were not great – I think they’re still better as they were today than wasting passes with Devin Hester, but a lot of work needs to be done.

They could not get out of their own way. What a disaster.

Is Jerry Angelo fired yet?

disagree about williams

he had some bad penalties, but the two facemask calls were not exactly egregious. his hands were too high, and he got matthews. more PT will help him get rid of that habit. but i thought he actually did pretty good against a very good defense today. in fact, the line overall was about average, which is incredible for them. the penalties were terrible, and omiyale didn’t play great (but, you know, he’s not a guard), but i was pleasantly surprised with their play.

period. he’s big, he’s fast, he creates separation, he fights for the ball, and he and our QB are on the same page fairly often. i don’t know what else you’d want out of that spot. yeah, he wasn’t a high draft pick, and he’s bounced around the league a lot, but that doesn’t mean anything. hell, brandon marshall was a 4th round pick that was nothing until cutler showed up, and now, he’s a monster.

I would be fine with him, Knox, and Bennet being the starters.

Hester is good, but he might be better off returning kicks.

Knox is doing really well, but he needs to learn how to run routes better.

He is a better kickoff returner than receiver, we all know that.

But Hester has been getting better this year. The Bears have a lot of quick receivers, the O-Line just needs to give Cutler time to throw [like that would ever happen this year….] so they can run their routes and get separation.

He's been better at WR

by far since converting over. There is no guarantee that he would be just as good returning as before. Typically, it’s a natural progression for any STS to want to start and play more. He’s making great strides the past two years.

Well dude

Inexperienced WRs and no running game to give him a break and the worst coachin staff ever will do that to a young QB.Im not saying its not all his fault cause he get some of the blame. But the only WR on our team that fights for the ball is Aromashodu and barely played this season.Jay likes to throw to him he is the guy Jay wants to start but guess what?Lovie a freakin turner didn’t do anything with him until now.Jay gets some blame. But he proved that with the right guys and coaches he can play well.i expected him to struggle in some games (not have 22 INTs or to throw as many times as he did since the running game sucks). Its his 1st year in the most predictable system in the NFL give him until next year to get an GOOD OC and good O-linemen.With those things im telling you he would look better. If we can endure about 5 years of grossman and with Cutler it shouldn’t be a problem since he shows lots of promise. He needs to be coached up by a GOOD coach not freakin turner.

I disagree

He’s much to blame for some of the losses, but as far as I can remember football is a TEAM game. His two INTs were pretty bad…but for this team to get better he needs to trust his WRs. It’s obvious this is his biggest fault this year. Nothing more, nothing less.

Oh for the days of Ditka!

While Ditka’s Bears gave us only one Super Bowl Championship, his Bears also gave us a number of NFC Central Championships. Ditka had it correct when he told Mike McCaskey that if he wanted a better team that he should allow him to become more involved in the player selection at the time of the NFL Draft.

Instead of McCaskey listening to his coach who brought him to Super Bowl XX, he FIRED DITKA in January 1993! Where was the logic in that, sir? What was the result of that, sir? Let’s see…Dave Wannstedt, Dick Jauron, and his successor and current head coach Lovie Smith! Oh yes, Lovie brought the Bears to Super Bowl XLI, but in the end, they handed Tony Dungy and Peyton Manning their first Super Bowl ring! Stack Lovie’s head coach record for the Bears against Ditka’s record as a head coach. I think you’ll see who wins hands down.

so...cutler needs to will the receivers to run the right routes?

i’m not saying cutler is free of blame, but how exactly is it his fault when his guys do something they’re not supposed to when he releases the ball? both picks today seemed to be cases where his receivers did not go where they were supposed to.

by guy incognito on Dec 13, 2009 6:28 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

At some point when are we going to accept the fact that the odds of ALL the receivers running the wrong routes

is pretty slim at this point in the season. Cutler just is not the QB we all made him out to be. I’m not saying he can’t get there at some point, but the underthrown balls the last few weeks are not “wrong routes”, they’re bad throws. The long ball was supposed to be his strong suit.

Also, when if a QB just throws the ball up and hope his receivers beat the DB’s all the time, rather than putting the ball in the spot where no one can make a play is a problem. I don’t want to hear about Brandon Marshall or Larry Fitzgerald or Randy Moss, those guys are few and far between, so if your QB is expecting every receiver to make those kind of plays all the time in order to get completions, he’s either an idiot or just not very good.

by BearFan611 on Dec 13, 2009 8:28 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Cutler's the leader... he's supposed to work with them and make them better.

That’s the bottom line. If that means you have to spend a boatload of extra time practicing and studying film together… then so be it.

There’s more than 3 or 4 occurances of “not being on the same page” visible in every game played this year, and a lot of them result in INTs or missed first down opportunities. You’d think that at some point over the course of the season, they’d understand what they’re doing together? Wouldn’t ya? But, that’s not the case… they make the same mistakes over and over.

Even DA… the guy Cutler’s been begging to get on the field all season, wasn;t where Cutler expected him to be on a couple of occasions today.

Peyton Manning’s playing with young WRs right now. Pierre Garcon & Austin Collie. Very rarely do they have communication problems. Why do you think that is? Because Peyton lives and breathes football, and he demands that dedication from his teammates.

As soon as the clots had him he was surrounded with loads of talent.Peyton did throw 81 picks in his 1st 4 years but he gotten better and smarter as the years went on.Jay is still young he should get better. But he needs help.If manning played on this team he wouldn’t last a season cause the O-line is terrible.Jay is use to the line sucking now son the clock in his head speeds up and rushes his passes. Its not all on Jay he is part of it and gets some blame. But we do not have a guy like a Reggie Wayne to help the young WRs get open.Or damn good OC like them.If Jay was on the Colts they would have a pretty good record. He needs the help if we had Holt. Knox,DA,and bennett would have that mentor to help them out.

We can debate this all night long.

There have been a handful of games this year where Cutler has had the ball in his hand with under 2 minutes with a chance to either tie or win the game. If you give the ball to Peyton Manning… on this crappy Bears team… Manning finds a way to win. Period.

And that’s the difference we’re talking about here. The leadership and will to win.
Manning is throwing to rookie WRs. You think the WR position coach in Indy is the one putting those rookies in the right spot? Hah. It’s Manning all the way.

Cutler has got to step up and lead the players he has and make them better. He hasn’t done it… and hasn’t show he has those leadership qualities in him.

Favre joined a new team with guys he’s never played with before… and his receivers are always in the spot he expects them to be. Why is that? McNabb is seemingly always working with new young WRs… and they never have the maginitude of communication problems the Bears WRs have. Why is that?

Look at the man leading the offense.

"If you give the ball to Peyton Manning… on this crappy Bears team… Manning finds a way to win. Period." Ok

Im sorry but hell no.He can’t make the O-line block 10x better than they are doing. He cannot make Forte run behind that crappy line and run better.Manning is a great QB he is the best. But he is NOT a miracle worker. If he played behind our O line he might DIE,wouldn’t last the season. He’s a sitting duck he needs time to do what he does and our O-line will never ever give him the time he needs. Not to mention that we dont have Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark to take the pressure off the young guys.

Each of those guys you mentioned Vikes have a great O-line,McNabb a great O-line.they both have great offensive minds and RBs who can and will help them out.You put Jay on one of those teams he will do much better than he is now.you put Manning with one of those teams he will be great there. But with this team? C’mon man!A QB can only do so much he needs good coaching Jay needs more time with these inexperienced WRs he’s not Manning,Manning is one of a kind. The eagles have Reid great Offensive mind same with Childress. And BOTH have game changing RBs.Manning for YEARS have a great O-line that HE knows very well and can trust. Now can you trust our O-line to not let the other team kill you? All season long Jay was in pressure he made his mistakes he is at fault at some of his mistakes but he can’t do anything with this O-line on a consistent basis the O-line leads to some of his mistakes, and when you put the inexperienced WRs.They can’t even block the lions D.The coaching is terrible here. There is NO QB as smart as Manning in the NFL.Most of these QBs need to be coached up.When the WRs didn’t know their routes yet you can’t say that its ONLY on the QB its on the coaching as well.Do you think that ALL QBs can do what you said alone?

Also the Colts’ org is SMART at evaluating talent. Our org. is not. They have great coaches. We don’t. Football IMHO is the one sport that requres the most coaching.

cutler can't spend his weak teaching his WRs route running

that’s on our coaching staff. yeah, peyton has young guys as well, who seem to be doing better. you don’t think coaching might have something to do with it? i’m not saying none of this is cutler’s fault, but the 2 picks today were so off that i can’t believe its not miscommunication. this happens consistently – our receivers run the wrong routes, cut the wrong way, don’t come back to the ball…if your WR coach and your OC aren’t coaching you well, you’re going to keep making those mistakes.

What do you mean he can't spend his week working with WRs

Just what exactly do you think the Bears do when they’re practicing on a field? They’re running the darn offense. Reps and reps and more reps.

And when they’re in the film room… they’re dissecting everything they did last week… and dissecting the opponent’s defense… together.

If they’re not landing on the same page by week 14 of a season… it’s the QBs fault. Period.

uh, no

he studies film and goes through practice with his team, but he does not pull out a chalkboard and teach the WRs to run their routes properly. that is not his job, nor is he qualified to do so (no QB is). this is why they have position coaches. these guys work extensively with their players on the very specifics of the position. to think that jay cutler should be doing that is absurd on so many levels. i get it, you hate cutler. but this line of argument is ridiculous.

by guy incognito on Dec 14, 2009 4:15 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Again... you;re not getting the damn point.

That is precisely what he does in practice. Have you not practiced football before? Have you not practiced a sport before?

You work on timing with your WRs… and after each rep… if something needs to be fixed, you say, I wanted you to be here because of this. Or, I was expecting you to do this, but you didn’t.

You think Peyton Manning just let the coaches tell Harrison and Wayne where to go? You think Montana just threw to some guy named Rice, because he was lined up there?

They work together on every idosyncrasy of the route… and hot routes… and adjustments.

Favre could give Donald Driver a glace or a nod right before the snap, and Driver knew exactly where to go. Get it? That’s the type of relationship WRs have with their QB… and our WRs obviously lack that kind of relationship with our QB.

I don;t want to piss on Cutler… but it all falls on his shoulders. There’s a reason it’s the most criticized position in the sport.

Did you guys happen to see

When after an incompletion late in the game to Knox, Cutler went over to him and was walking off the field talking to him about his route? He wasn’t yelling at him or screaming, just calmly talking about where he was and where Cutler thought he was going (I was in a bar w/ no sound on the TV and I couldn’t read the closed captioning fast enough so I didn’t see/hear what Billick speculated he was saying) but I took that as a positive thing, that Cutler can be a leader and is willing to help these young guys get better.

Also I remember hearing about a month ago that after the first Packers loss when the team got back to Chicago at about 5am, everyone went home but Cutler went to Halas Hall to watch the film. I don’t believe Cutler isn’t working hard or doesn’t care. i just don’t buy it. He’s going to get better.

this is getting downright comical, dude

WRs haven’t been coached well to run the right routes – cutler’s fault.
the o-line can’t block – cutler’s fault.
the RBs can’t gain any yardage, partly because of the o-line, but partly because forte isn’t running as well as he did last year – cutler’s fault.
everyone knows ron turner’s play calling – cutler’s fault.
the defense gives up points early every week, putting the offense behind – cutler’s fault.

It's not like we are saying that 100% of his picks are the receiver's fault.

He has been underthrowing his receivers more than I’d like lately, and a few of those throws get picked. There are bad decisions he makes sometimes that get me a bit steamed. Also, if he does anything wrong, it’s expecting the level of talent on this team to be similar to what he had in Denver. It’s not. He has slowly been realizing that and adjusting his game downward to compensate.

However, you have to realize that the chances of throwing a pick tend to go up when:
1. You have no time to throw the ball, because anything more than a 3-step drop will leave you chewing turf.
2. You have ZERO running game support to setup the playaction. It makes coverage that much tighter.
3. You have inexperienced WRs who can’t take advantage of their main asset, speed, because there is NO TIME to get seperation.
4. You are hurrying your throws because of #1 above. This leads to bad mechanics and poorly thrown balls.
5. You’re recievers, eager and talented as they may be, run routes poorly at times, which leads me to my next reason…
6. You have no confidence in your recievers, so instead of throwing to a spot, you have to wait to make sure they are open, which leads to tunnel vision, hurrying, and bad mechanics.
7. After dealing with all the reasons above, you find your team is down by 10-14 pts, and you try to force throws into very tight windows.
8. Your TE, which is supposed to be a safety blanket option, has a habit of dropping passes.
9. You have no big target who can go up and win potential jump balls. (oh wait, the coaching staff just allowed DA into a game for once to be that guy).

Maybe if Jay had just a consistant running game, good pass protection, or a decent coaching staff he could have the luxury of being patient with his young WRs and coaching them up the way Peyton does in Indy. But with so many things going wrong, it’s utterly impossible to do so. Remember, as T.Moore said above, Peyton was a pick machine his first 4 years in Indy for some of the same reasons that Jay throws a lot of them now.

I also don’t understand the criticism for one big reason. A lot of speculation happens when we argue about a player saying, “he’s better/worse than X. If he were on a better team, he’d be awesome.” In most cases, we’ll never know. We don’t know how Peyton would’ve done on our Bears squad. Fortunately, we have seen Jay on 2 squads. Last year, he was on a team that surrounded him with a decent line, a lousy running game, and great recievers. Result: 4000 yards and a decent TD/pick ratio, and many games won on his big arm. So we know that Cutler isn’t the issue.

As to your comment about leadership, I commented in another section and said that leadership isn’t a given. It takes time to develop and earn from your teammates. Not lashing back at Urlacher in the media is showing leadership, and so is not throwing his teammates under the bus weekly.

Penalties

had a big impact on the outcome of the game. PI call in the EZ on Bowman was garbage, as well as the non-call on the Pack on an important series in the 3rd quarter. Jay’s Ints looked pretty bad, but I’m guessing he was expecting the receiver to break the other way in both cases. Chalk them up to miscommunication, just like many have been this season. The defense played pretty well, and kept GB from scoring TDs in the first half. Olsen cannot make a tough catch to save his life, and Omiyale continues to be awful at the fundalmentals of football. Lovie defies nature by losing a TO while challenging a call after calling a TO- I don’t think I’ve ever seen this happen before….pure idiocy.

Then he could get some plays like the ones he had with the Broncos, and it would be easier for him to teach everyone the plays.

Lifelong Arizona Cardinals/Chicago Bears fan.

No band-wagoner fans allowed, pick a team and stick with em, throughout the good and the bad.

Dude,

From one Packers fan to another, don’t gloat.

It does not make the rest of us look good if you act like a troll here.

You sound

like a real loser of a fan if you don’t want the Packers to “go far.” Btw- you might want to change your sig, it just makes you look more foolish.

My thoughts

We will probably win against Detroit, but i don’t seeing us win any more games beyond that. The receivers obviously are not being coached since they make the same mistakes every single game this year. Whatever is being told to Jay and the receivers, it’s obviously not being absorbed. The offensive line has been a bandaid all year long and why wasn’t beekman starting at guard..he started there all last year but instead they want to go with an experiment.

DA has showed that he has chemistry with Cutler and yet it took an injury to finally get him on the field. 100 yards of penalties will almost alwasy lose the game for you. The running game looked better, and kudos for not abandoning it totally.

Football is a game of inches. To call a timeout in the 4th Q, and then after challenge the play when you should know the rules of football and what counts as a catch and then lose 2 timeouts on one play is inexcusable. After the sack on the last drive..one of those timeouts would of been crucial to regroup and pick a good 2nd down play instead of throwing in over the middle and waste more time.

This team overall is just a mess and it all starts with coaching. All i am saying is Charlie Weis has said he would love to come to Chicago and work with Cutler..if Lovie doesn’t go..Ron turner and the entire offensive position coaches need to go and we need this change at the end of the year.

From a Rams Fan

Please Fire Lovie, as a Rams fan, we will take him and put him in charge of something (D-line, DBs, LBs, D-Cord) on the D and we have to improve. We really suck. So if firing Lovie is your answer. I’ll take it.

Thank you.
