The Festivus Airing of Grievances

Wcg_thumb_poll_medium What more can be said about Lovie and the rest of the coaching staff?  The ineptitude is nearly at Vinny Del Negro levels (shout out to suffering Bulls' fans).   The number of coaching mistakes in the Green Bay debacle are numerous.  The number of coaching mistakes on the season really gives me a headache.   Lovie Smith, even with the Super Bowl appearance, will probably join Wannstedt and Jauron as former Bear coaches who won't be missed and won't be beloved 1/10th as much as da Coach.

Let's take this time to lash out at the Bears coaches and let them know how disappointed we are in their performances this year.  Which errors have been the most frustrating?  Which decisions have enraged you the most?

Where's the "All the Above" option?

This team has gotten so pathetic, that I’ve lost my desire to talk about how shitty they are!!

Multiple options

I was torn on which one to pick. It’s a toss up between Jay/WRs on the same page, and the lack of development of our draft picks. I chose the latter cause it has seemed to impact the team adversely the past three years since the SB.

Yeah, the inability to identify and develop talent is really what killed us in the end.

If we have talent, or I should say DEVELOPED TALENT, we aren’t in the situation we are in.

by ChiLobo#23 on Dec 14, 2009 11:11 AM CST up reply actions

Since the Super Bowl, we basically have fallen off of a cliff.

1) We have probably been one of the worst-drafting teams over the past 3 years. We have essentially ignored the O-line (with the exception of C. Williams, who I hope doesn’t turn out to be an NLF bust). By the way, is Jarron Gilbert ever gonna get to see the field?

2) We haven’t signed any impact free agents.

3) We’ve gotten rid of two # 1 running backs who have gone on to flurish for other teams (Jones and Bensen).

4) We’ve gotten older on defense, and haven’t been able to bring in any impact (or quality) players, with the possible exceptions of Al Afalava and Zack Bowman.

I still don’t understand the purpose of Lovie assuming the DC position this year and taking over the play-calling duties. Was that supposed to be an upgrade over Babich? The defense seems like it’s gotten progressively worse over the past 3 years – and this year sinking to new lows.

Look at the spread in the voting

This coaching staff has failed in so many areas it’s laughable. Secondary musical chairs doesn’t have any votes, but we all know how big a circus our secondary really is. If these coaches are not shown the door after the season, you will see a 1 or 2 win team next season.

by Mike Mueller on Dec 14, 2009 10:25 AM CST reply actions

D. Manning especially

He started out strong this year, and has been virtually non-existent since another round of shuffling began. I hope we lose out, just so it’s perfectly clear to McCaskeys that Lovie has failed on almost all levels with this team, and the time is now to land one of the available coaches.

many common names, not to mention Christianity and Islam have "Hebrew" orgins

so a connection to Judaism is tenuous and the reference to Israel is polemic

by No It All on Dec 14, 2009 12:02 PM CST up reply actions

You truly represent your name.

The joke was that it is pronounced as the female name “Danielle.” Don’t try and go all biblical on me because I made a connection to the Hebrew language and the country of Israel. My point was that very few people know that the Hebrew definition of “Danieal” translates to God is my judge outside of a Hebrew speaking region. Your claim of my comment being polemic is a lame attempt to elevate the level of the comment. I find your comment to be polemic on my character in your attempts to accuse me of being a malefactor. See, I can use big words to sound like an intellect just like you!

by PolishSausage.Ditka.Bears. on Dec 14, 2009 12:47 PM CST up reply actions

EXACTLY

I know this is an exercise in futility, i enjoy it nonetheless:

“My point was that very few people know that the Hebrew definition of "Danieal" translates to God is my judge outside of a Hebrew speaking region.”

Seriously? As if Jewish people are so secretive that the meanings behind their words and names are totally unknown by anyone that does not live inside the state of Israel. Call it a guess and I hate to be presumptuous, but I doubt Dane learned that information from a trip to Israel. I’ll even go a step further and venture a guess that Google may play a part in the proliferation of such closely guarded secrets such as the meanings behind Hebrew names and words.

by No It All on Dec 14, 2009 1:26 PM CST up reply actions

PS

sorry you had to crack open a dictionary to find out what polemic means, but the fact that you don’t know what a word means doesn’t make it “big” or “intellectual”

by No It All on Dec 14, 2009 1:29 PM CST up reply actions

No kidding.

My point is if you aren’t educated in the Hebrew language or in biblical names, more than likely you aren’t going to know what it translates to without the help of the internet in a quick response environment. Dane learned it from the internet, I imagine. What point are you trying to make exactly? My point was never that their definitions were “secrets” to outsiders or that Dane took a trip to Israel, now you just sound stupid and aren’t making a good case. Your definitely twisting my words into some ridiculous translation, maybe you should read what I said again. And for the record, I know what polemic means and I seriously doubt that you use words like “polemic” in your daily conversations, someone like yourself who uses such gems as “loyal bunch suckers” doesn’t scream grammatical intelligence.

How about incompetence in IDENTIFYING young talent?

I’m sick to death of all these cute small school picks being taken 3 or 4 rounds ahead of where their value probably lies. We take Manning in the 2nd (Sports Illustrated had him projected as a 5th or 6th round) and do nothing with him. What about Bazuin? It’s like Angelo thinks he knows something no one else does. Every year we throw away draft picks cause of that idiot.

As recently as couple of years ago, over 90% of revenues for pro sports teams were made up of gate admissions, TV/ radio fees, and advertisements/ endorsements. Merchandise is literally pennies in comparison.

Regardless of the 5% impact

it still wouldn’t go unnoticed. Earlier in the year, different media outlets made it a point to announce that Jay Cutler’s jersey was the most widely sold jersey in the United States. Those statistics don’t go unnoticed and if people did refuse to buy merchandise they wouldn’t just brush it off because it was a small piece of the “pie.” Especially since the Bears franchise is one of the most popular in the U.S. as well.

Vikes v. Bengals

Very instructive. Minnesota has a much better secondary than the Bears, yet they still game-planned to double cover Chad 85 all day. Result — he had 3 catches for 27 yards. Vikes win.

The Bears staff thought it was a good idea to single cover him all day. Result — he was unstoppable and it was a blowout.

by Shuffle85 on Dec 14, 2009 11:27 AM CST reply actions

too....many...problems...can't...pick...just...one

which tells you how thoroughly the coaches have failed, short of babich (wtf?). its clear many of the players aren’t being coached well (like the WRs). its also clear the schemes are not effective on either side of the ball. its also clear that we are not evaluating our own talent properly (like DA – and i be shocked if gilbert gets some serious snaps and produces better than any d-lineman not named brown). we make poor in-game coaching decisions. and all these problems feed into each other. they all SHOULD be fired. at least some of them WILL be fired (the entire offensive side of the coaching staff).

by guy incognito on Dec 14, 2009 11:31 AM CST reply actions

Offensive play calling pretty much says it all...

Was torn between Penalties and the HB Dive. Went with the HB Dive. The friggin run up the middle for little to no gain has always been virtually the only running play in the playbook. This has been the case for as long as I’ve been watching, so it isn’t indicative of Lovie per se, but an outdated organizational philosophy (as if we still have an O Line and Walter Payton and a Defense that can stop people).

The secondary has also never been viable, but we have seen Bears Ds have success even with bad CBs. problem is this league is increasinlgy becoming a passing league and we don’t have good enough corners (or wrs) to keep up with this trend. If we at least had 1 good player at either wr or cb, maybe there could be some improvement in practice (along the lines of you only get better playing someone better than you, but the wrs and cbs are both terrible)

Penalties are so obviously bad that I that it’d be a waste of a vote. But when a coach has been running a team for as long as Lovie has, one would expect a lot more discipline.

by No It All on Dec 14, 2009 11:31 AM CST reply actions

I went with the problems coaching Jay and the Receivers, but offensive play calling and the O-Line came close to getting it.

Penalties did it for me

The other stuff that people mentioned are problems, sure, and big ones. But a lot of them have been problems before, and we’ve won through them. The penalties are new, and more importantly seem very closely tied to coaching to me. I feel like the massive uptick in penalties is what’s showing that the staff is losing the team and won’t be able to win next season. That’s the factor that makes me think we should get a new coach.

by TCBullfrog on Dec 14, 2009 12:43 PM CST reply actions

I voted clock/time/challenge management

My reasoning is that for all the other options, it’s really hard to say how much of the problem falls on the coaches’ shoulders. Obviously, they have to be held accountable to some degree, but at a certain point, they can only play the hand they’re dealt. Injuries have dramatically weakened a roster that wasn’t built nearly as well as we all though, and you can’t blame the coaches for that.

On the other hand, clock/challenge/time management is something that falls entirely on one person: Lovie Smith. And he has failed miserably at that.
