Should Hester be demoted?

Star-divide

Last Sunday was one of the best performances I've seen from the Receiver position. Makes you wonder if the Bears are better off with Aromashadu and Knox starting with Bennett in the slot. Hester is a good talent, but is he that much better than Knox? Devin Aromashadu last Sunday seemed more in sync with Cutler than Hester has been with him all this season. Most of Earl Bennett's plays have come from the slot, where he is most effective at. This is a tough spot for this coaching staff, because it's not like Devin Hester is a Veteran WR, he's still developing at the position and developing quite well in my opinion. Do you sit Hester down for Knox, because Knox has a higher ceiling? Do you sit him for D.A. because he's has a better rapport with Cutler than Hester does? Do you not put Hester in the slot, because Bennett is more effective there? It will be interesting to see what the coaching staff does when they leading receiver comes back from his calf injury.

I think it might be a good time...

to think about possibly trading Hester after this season. He’s marketable and actually very marketable to the Raiders. He’s got the only thing Big Al looks for.. speed. The Raiders have shown lately that they are very intelligent in the management position so I could the Bears maybe coming out ahead in a package with them. We have several viable options when it comes to the return game, and maybe, just maybe this last week could have shown us the future of the WR position. Now this does involve OUR management’s ability to not get distracted by shiny objects as well and get something good in return… I would hope the Raiders wouldn’t be able to outsmart us from a management standpoint.

yea trade your most explosive offensive weapon

nothing against d.a. but its one game. bennet and knox have been good but hester at one point in stretch of i beleive had the most catches in the LEAGUE second to the great larry fitzgerald and even that was only by about 3 or 4 catches.

DING DING DING

Until DA produces like that consistantly, Hester shouldn’t be going anywhere. Hester does get attention when he’s in play, and he has made some good moves this season.

I don’t think it’s time to shut the door on the WR experiment with Hester. He looks much better this year than last, maybe next year he’ll have improved again.

by Virto on Dec 15, 2009 12:42 PM CST up reply actions

You are clearly intelligent BL 21.

Unfortunately, however, I can’t say the same about some of the others here.

by axthelm on Dec 15, 2009 12:46 PM CST up reply actions

When was Hester explosive again??

perhaps when he was returning kicks a few years back. But deffinitely not this year. He still needs a bit of development as a WR, but I’m not taking anything away from Hester, he’s a good #2 reciever. Our offensive line will never give Cutler enough time for Hester to showcase his speed on routes and that isn’t going to be fixed for a few years. I just figured while he still has an upside and “decent” trade value, cash in while you can. There’s not much we’ll be able to do this offseason as it stands and we don’t have many options to get any players or picks otherwise. And the number of catches arguement I don’t hold much value in since the genious Turner almost always goes to Hester on a broken screen pass. That’ll never work because the offense has no idea how to block for it… amongst other reasons.

by ArmyCubFan on Dec 15, 2009 1:54 PM CST up reply actions

Who on the 2009 Bears WAS explosive?

This year was a train wreck. Period.

Throwing Hester under the bus makes no sense.

by axthelm on Dec 15, 2009 2:08 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly my point.

There wasn’t any explosiveness on the entire team. So how is that throwing someone under the bus? Nobody is saying that he is garbage. But if you want me to make a case that he is garbageor really throw him under the bus I’ll give it the ’ol college try.

by ArmyCubFan on Dec 15, 2009 2:25 PM CST up reply actions

how about the.....

seattle game took a 9 yard pass that looked to only be for a first down and turned it into the game winning td.
rams game? that was a very athletic catch using his frame to go and get the ball.
that stretch i was referring to from the cincy game to say the eagles one he showed another strength of being very reliable underneath as a security blanket.
hes made great improvments this year. ask any team who on the bears offense worries you? i guarntee a MAJORITY will be hester because of his speed.

it's done

Hester is progressing so I say keep him where he’s at, but I think that he should not win a starting job next year by default.

trade his A$$

I like Hester and all but at this point we have good young recievers and he would be good trade bait for maybe a few lower round picks that we could use to trade up to the 2nd or 1st round

THANK YOU DENVER!!!!!!!!!

Put Hester in the slot

and as a kr
if DA is good against the Ravens

by DaHamsta on Dec 15, 2009 3:22 PM CST reply actions

That is more likely.

If DA shows that he can be a #1, with route running skills and finding the open spots in the D, with Knox as the outside burner, then you put Hester into the slot and let him work underneath. Let’s see if Hester can make some moves and break some long runs. With Olsen and Hester in the slots, a big outside target and a burner on the outside you might actually make a decent run at passing.

Of course this is all worthless if you QB is lying flat on his back with a 350lbs NT lying on top of him.

That’s not true!!! WHY THE F*CK WOULD YOU SAY THAT YOU AHOLE!! Ok maybe your right but you gotta give a little something here for it to work. I don’t know what I’m going to do this is the worst thing I’ve ever read, this day could not get any worse. Fine, F*ck it, you’re right.

time for people

to get off the fantasy bus. first it was urlacher now it is hester..who is next cutler? forte? AA? hell why dont we just trade all of our players for a box of chex mix and a bunny rabbit

the stupidity that some people think has gotten me really concerned with coming back to this site for any real news..its almost like reading an MJD article on yahoo sports.

Bring back our honey bears...sick and tired of hearing about the dallas cowboy cheerleaders and the bars they go work at when they quit. cold weather + cheerleaders in skimpy outfits = lots of fun

by tomh115 on Dec 15, 2009 4:01 PM CST reply actions

The fact that

you are using a blog to find real news is what concerns me. It’s a blog, where people speculate and treat the website as their own “reality” for their team. The purpose of this site and all the others here are for random people who have something in common come to share their thoughts, dreams, and “reality” on various topics (either real or made up topics).

by ArmyCubFan on Dec 15, 2009 4:11 PM CST up reply actions

Actually,

WCG is a very reliable source for getting the most up-to-date Bears news. Not only do the members constantly debate back and forth, but the writers, admins and even some members do a helluva job posting breaking news. What “better” suggestion do you have for us, ESPN or Yahoo! boards?

But then again, I’m sure you know this… with all 44 of your comments here.

While I appreciate the embelishment

of the number of posts here on my behalf. I am just stating simple facts about a blog. There was no slight on the website, the writers, or the admins. Granted, there are no reliable, free alternatives for late breaking news on certain athletic coorporations that die-hard fans like us have a chance to comment on. We all have the same goal in mind, and that is we want our team to win every game and then the Super Bowl!! Cheering for anything but a victory is not a true patron of the team. We never settle for second best or for a loss. Even though right now I wouldn’t mind if the Bears were to lose out so that certain management positions might (should) lose their job. I am still gunning for the Bears to run the table the rest of this year and possibly make the playoffs (longshot, I know). But if you aren’t, somewhere deep in your mind or heart, rooting for this, you aren’t a true fan.

by ArmyCubFan on Dec 15, 2009 9:09 PM CST up reply actions

no embellishment

You’ve now posted 47 times, congrats. Check for yourself!

What does receiving up-to-date news have to do with everyone here wanting our team to win every week? I guess I just don’t get the correlation, but why the life story in response to what I said?

Stating the facts about a blog, are you? You do realize that someone at WCG typically post news within minutes of it breaking, even if it is only slightly Bears related. And sometimes sbnation and WCG are the first place on the interwebs to break the news.

I would say that even though this is a “blog,” it’s a pretty d*mn good spot to get the most recent and up-to-date information. But that’s just me.

Should I go off into a tangent on why real fans hate Ron Turner now?

i just go

to read about the bears. like smudgers said the site is reliable for up to date bears info but quite frankly i am sick of the bull spit that comes out of some fans mouths. it appears that nobody can be happy with what we are doing correctly even if we have a losing record and probably wont make playoffs.

I tend to agree here,

it seems to have gotten worse lately. But I guess that comes with losing. I do wish I had the ability to ignore a few people though.

if anyone

gets traded in the offseason, it’s probably going to be bennett. with DA, hester, and knox developing, we have sort of a conundrum at the WR position. we rarely run 4 WR sets, and all 4 of these guys could be the starting 3 for us. the vandy connection can only go so far, and i haven’t been particularly impressed with bennett compared to the other 3.

what i think will happen, if these guys keep developing, is we’ll sign DA to a 2 year contract, let bennett’s contract run its course, and then decide which we want to keep.

regardless, i see davis gone next year, due to iglesias taking his spot as ST ace. yay!

anyways, there’s no way hester gets traded. he’s done so much for this franchise, it would be like the giants trading brandon jacobs. not gonna happen.

by Nih1lus on Dec 15, 2009 4:05 PM CST reply actions

A good idea before anything could happen

is to figure out if/when Turner will no longer be the OC. The scheme needs to work with the personnel. For example the Tampa-2 on the defensive side. If the players don’t fit the scheme, it’ll never work. However, regardless of what happens with Hester, the Bears need to make some type of move before the draft to pick up some draft picks and have someone that really knows how to scout help with the draft this year. They won’t have the money to do too much this offseason with some of the overpaid players that’ll be on the roster next season.

No, so no to your idea of benching Hester.

I like our depth at the recieving corps.

But I don’t think we have anyone who has the potential to be a true #1.

by GouldisGold on Dec 15, 2009 6:10 PM CST reply actions

It would be interesting, though

If we were able to actually re-build the O-line (for real, this time), and maybe get a decent OC and QB coach to work with Cutler and do a better job of designing some things that play to his strengths as a QB. Then, I think you’d see 1 or 2 of the WR’s put together a Pro Bowl caliber year – numbers wise.

Good depth is right

lots of depth at the #3, 4 and 5 receiver spots, no #1 or 2 though.

Returned to the position on special teams that put him in the national spotlight? Yes.

by Gesiakob on Dec 16, 2009 1:44 AM CST reply actions

I think he should be demoted to #3 receiver and also used as a 3rd down back

I would try to get the ball in Hester hands in many ways as possible, just like how the Vikes do with Harvin or the Saints do with Bush.

Why not move Hester back to full-time KR duties?

It seems like that’s where he was really able to shine the brightest. He’s been a pretty solid WR though, and I think he was on track to get over 1000 yards before he got hurt, wasn’t he?

i voted no

23 has come a long way from where he started a couple of years ago at wr. numbers don’t look bad either and i liked some of what i have seen from him in the past few weeks. a real #1, no of course not but he isn’t bad at all for where the bears are at right now. i think he will get even better next year in his 2nd year with cutler.

by reefermadness3 on Dec 16, 2009 4:43 PM CST reply actions

I was at the game on Sunday and I knew this was going to be one of the first things posted.

The answer is NO. But Hester will always be getting hate from somewhere. Heres a thought, we have 4 solid WRs that are young, why not develop them and become a very dangerous passing team in the not too distant future the way New Orleans did with Colston, Henderson, Moore, and Meachem. Maybe run our offense the way GB does. Thats my dream but I fear thats all it will ever be with this coaching staff.

GREAT POINT!

all these guys on the saints were DRAFTED or signed by them the saints were the first team for all of them. It took a while but that chemistry devolped and look at them no.
Could D.A. be our colston?
hester our henderson(i like hester better)
knox our moor?
bennet our meachem?(solid hands)
