Ask Baltimore Beatdown: Ravens Blogger
Hey guys, it's Bruce from Baltimore Beatdown, SB Nation's Ravens blog. We welcome you guys to Baltimore this weekend, but hopefully you will not be happy you came by late Sunday afternoon. We are on the cusp of a playoff spot and are fighting for that Wild Card that will give us some post season football to watch for a reason. While the Bears defense is not the one we all think of from the recent past, neither is our Ravens defense, but we are still hanging in there because of a better offense than in the past. Hopefully, we'll pull one out against you guys and then set up another showdown with the Steelers in Pittsburgh to nail down the post season berth.
Feel free to post your questions here and I'll stop back the rest of the week to give you my answers from a Ravens perspective. Feel free to stop by The Beatdown, join and post your thoughts as well. We may be a smaller group of fans, but we are pretty knowledgeable and passionate about our football, so you'd better bring it. I was going to say we are "loud, proud and purple," but I guess you've had enough already of the "purple" team in your division!

Do you think
The Ravens will insert all of their reserves in the 3rd quarter when the Bears are losing 37-3 at the Half? or will they continue to pile it on, keeping fantasy owners in mind?
Well, when we took a 20-3 lead
over Detroit, Ray Rice didn’t see any more action, and that’s why Willis McGahee went off for 76 yards on 12 carries and two TD’s. That said, Chicago is not Detroit and while I do expect a Ravens win, it will be nowhere near that easy even though I’d love to see it happen.
With Chicago’s run defense being rated low, I fully expect a lot of running and therefore if I had Rice on my team, I’d definitely play him. I have the Ravens defense and while they haven’t had anywhere near the turnovers they got last year, I’m hoping for some stray Cutler throws to hit us in the chest.

Oher
How would you evaluate/rate his rookie season? Also, will Ray Rice be an every down back for the rest of his career?
We're not scaremongering (nightmare of a season continues), this is really happening (Bears are more than done) - Radiohead
Oher has been a great pickup
and a steal at #23 of the 1st round. He was picked 18 selections after the Bengals’ Andre Reed and has been a huge reason that Rice has those open holes to run through. He started off at RT but has played LT a couple of times due to injuries on that side. Most recently, he was the LT for last week’s win over the Lions, where the Ravens rushed for 308 yards as a team and averaged over 7 yards/carry!
I expect Rice to be a feature back from now on. However, even though he put on about 15 pounds on his upper body this off season (210 pounds), he is still relatively small to take the rigors of a 16 game season. I would protect him with a limit of around 20 carries a game, and with both Willis McGahee and LeRon McClain on his team, I’d spread the carries around to them to keep Rice fresh. On Baltimore Beatdown, I did a story this week about our offense being too predictable and relying on giving the ball to Rice way too often, especially after he goes off and breaks a long one, they almost always go right back to him, which I can’t stand.

Uhhh,...yeah
Andre Reed was the old Buffalo WR, whose celebrity girlfriend burnt down his mansion, right?

Hey Ravens fans, I don't get to see a lot of their games but I've liked that Defense for a while.
What has been the main difference with the Defense this year? Considering how Baltimore was a top defense, but it seems like the stats have gotten worse this year.
And what do you think of Flacco’s progress from his rookie year, and how the coaches seem like they are trying to have him throw the ball more often.
Lifelong Arizona Cardinals/Chicago Bears fan.
No band-wagoner fans allowed, pick a team and stick with em, throughout the good and the bad.
can we somehow get a trade for mcclain please?
also, will ed reed make it onto the field sunday?
i wonder if there are any official o/u bets out there on ravens total run yards for this sunday. i think 145 seems like a good start.
McClain is a FA after this season I believe
So you could make a run at him, but I think Ozzie will want to keep him. Not sure about Ed Reed this week. I think he will play, just to get warmed up when we go to Pittsburgh the game after. After he intercepts Cutler 2 times in the first half, he will most likely be pulled since we will be winning 24-3 at that point. No disrespect, but Cutler is just bad man.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
none taken
there are plenty of excuses to offer as to exactly why #6 is sucking it up this year (examples found all up and down this board) but that doesn’t erase the fact that he is indeed sucking this year. i for one am hopeful that devin hester speaks the truth in a recent article when he says there are going to be lots of personnel changes this off-season. i think most of the fans in chicagoland are more than ready to see something A LOT better than what we’ve been given the last 3 years.

Something that irritated me about Cutler
On BaltimoreRavens.com, they do a weekly 5 questions for the Coach and QB of the opponent. Here is one of the questions and answers for Cutler.
What can you attribute to the decline in team success after getting off to a good start this season?
Cutler: "I don’t know. [At the] end of the season I’ll have to go back and look at all the games, and really study it, and see what kind of the demise was. We started off 3-1, and felt pretty good, then we went on a tough stretch and gave some games away , and got beat soundly a couple of times. I can only speak offensively; offensively, we’re just not executing. We’re turning the ball over a lot, [and] we’ve got a lot of penalties. So, it’s not that defenses are doing anything to really dictate it, we’re just kind of hurting ourselves a lot."
Um, hello??? How can he be THAT arrogant to not mention his 22 interceptions on the year? We’re turning the ball over? No YOU are turning the ball over with you averaging 2 ints a game. I always liked watching Cutler, but I am just not seeing the fit with you guys right now.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Cutler's lack of success in Chicago
combined with Orton’s in Denver, shows what a team game this sport is.
I do not expect Ed to play and if he does, it will not be much. Same goes for Suggs and anyone else who is hurting. No offense to the Bears, but we should be able to win this game without them and help them get healthier for the big one next week in Pittsburgh.

Its the coaching/management
and not necessarily Cutler. When Justin Gage, Cedric Benson, Kyle Orton, Thomas Jones, Chris Harris, and DC Ron Rivera are doing quite successful away from Lovie Smith and Jerry Angelo…then you know the awfulness comes from the top.
Trust me, as a Colts fan, I know what it’s like to see an organization nuture and development young talent. And in defense of Cutler, I don’t recall Manning putting it all on him when he got the most ints as a rookie QB during his first year press conferences.
Yea, but Cutler is not a rookie. He is an all-pro QB who is performing like a bum.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
I'm going to have to agree with Jake on this one
Sure Culter is playing like a bum…but that didn’t happen until he landed with this coaching staff and OC run by Jerry Angelo (who lacks common sense).
Mr MaLoR…think about it…Orton was playing mediocre football until he landed somewhere else, along with the rest of the other guys mentioned in Jake’s post, that’s the coaching and management at fault right there.
Mr MaLoR you want to blame Jay that’s fine because he’s made many bad throws…but I bet you don’t have a GM and coach in Baltimore who was willing to trade/get rid of the heart of the team after a Superbowl appearance (ie Ron Rivera and Thomas Jones).
by MetalGearPeaceWalker on Dec 19, 2009 7:53 PM CST up reply actions
Just proves that
football is a team game and everyone’s success is pretty much based on the rest of the guys surrounding you. Orton vs. Cutler is prime example of how the team makes the player, not the other way around.

You're kidding right?
So it’s Culter’s fault that the arrogant GM traded a consistent 1,000 yrd rusher (Thomas Jones) and playmaking Safety (Chris Harris)?
Yeah…Bruce, football is a team sport, especially if you have a GM like Jerry Angelo who builds a team that resembles a high school JV squad.
Go watch my organization the Colts…now that is excellance personafied.
I would have to say
that if I wasn’t a Bears fan, the Ravens would be on the short list of replacement teams (basically the Ravens and the Panthers).
And since we’ve been eliminated an the Ravens haven’t, here’s to a Raven victory!
Never die easy. Why run out of bounds and die easy? Make that Linebacker pay. It carries into all facets of your life. It's okay to lose, to die, but don't die without trying, without giving it your best.- Walter Payton
Man, giving up like this?
I know it’s been rough, but you guys are some of the biggest fans out there. How can you just give up on the team? Sure, they are out of the playoffs, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still fight and knock us out.
But thanks for supporting the Ravens!
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
I wouldn't say it's "giving up"...
I’d say it’s more of a resignation that this isn’t the team we thought it would be. THEY WEREN’T WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE!
Reaction basically goes all over the board around here. I’m pulling for a Bears win (however predicting otherwise in my analysis) especially cause our losing doesn’t help us out – and personally, I’d rather not help out Denver any more than we already have. But a lot of people (including local radio host Dan McNeil) are thinking that the more the Bears lose the more likely it is to perpetuate some changes in coaching and stuff.
Ah well. Good luck this week, let’s hope we have a great game out there. BEAR DOWN!
Yea, I enjoy playing a tough team like you guys
I am still fearful of Lance Briggs. I think he is one of the scariest LB in the league. Love Tommie Harris to, no one gives that man enough credit today. Should be a hard nosed battle
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
also
our safeties in payne and afalava aren’t all-pro or anything but they can hit pretty well. safety blitzes has had some of the best defensive plays all year for the bears.

Out of LSU I believe? He was a beast in college and Ive seen him make some serious plays with you guys.

for some reason hasn’t played much at all this year outside of st. probably because afalava seems like a better player overall.
he did have a couple of very good plays in his time here though

Do you think that Uhrlacher
would have made a difference in the outcome of games had he been healthy, or is it all on the offense. If Cutler had better WR’s, would that help? We hear that all the time here in Baltimore that we need a big name tall, fast and strong WR like a Brandon Marshall, Anquan Boldin, etc. You hear the same there?
aka 'Rexx'
Urlacher
Hard to say. I know he’s getting up in age, and I know he said that he felt as healthy as he ever has. But… No one covers the middle of this Bears defense like he does, especially dropping into coverage. This year is really showing how much he means to that defense.
Cutler and WRs… Depends on if you believe that a bigger/better WR helps more than a better O-Line does. We do need a veteran wide receiver, and we had a huge debate about that here last week, which we would rather get first – a WR or a solidified O-Line. My position was the O-Line is more needed than a better WR, but maybe you can answer that better, lol – what do you think helps Flacco more, Mason’s (veteran) presence or the good offensive line?
For Jay’s style, we will need a bigger WR (maybe Aromashodu grows into that role?), but we still need to figure out what we’re doing on the line before we worry about WR adjustments, IMO.
Also
What would you expect the Bears record to be w/ Orton still there. I also recall you traded a couple of first rounders at least for Cutler, what will you plan to do in the draft and what specifically did you lose draft pick wise? Thanks.
aka 'Rexx'
I think you could
Put Joe Montana in his prime behind the line we have, OC, we have, and WRs we have and he would suck…maybe not as sucky as Jay
I also think Cutler is to blame on some levels too…a little too cocky-but that’s what you get with a gunslinger-type QB. Feast or famine…
We have no 1st or 2nd round picks this year traded them away our 1st round for Cutler and our 2nd for Gaines Adams. Excuse me, I have to go vomit now
by BigAppleBearsFan on Dec 17, 2009 10:59 AM CST up reply actions
Shh! We do not mention the name of He Who Shall Not be Named around here!
Lol, just messing. In all seriousness, we don’t know how we’d be with Orton instead of Cutler… We don’t really try to figure out if we’d’ve been better off with Orton instead anyway, too many other variables. They’re different types of QB in different offensive schemes with different defenses behind them.
The draft picks hurt, and not only do we not have our 1st rounder from the trade, we also lost our second rounder in the Gaines Adams trade – meaning we don’t start until the (early) third round. Last mock that I saw gave us an OT in round 3.
Meh, QB isn't the issue IMO
Cutler has won us some games and lost us some games. KO would have the benefit of familiarity with the scheme, but otherwise the outcome would be similar. Cutler was put in a bad situation.
The killer has been line play. The DLine generates zero pass rush most of the time. I think that has a lot to do with opponents scoring on the first drive more often than not, and a sorry 3rd and long %. QB would not have made a difference in games like Cinci, Arizona, and Minnesota (who put up 31, 31, and 24 points in the first HALF).
Our OLine is “probably the worst in pro football” according to Greg Cosell (link). Sack numbers and hits aren’t terrible on paper, but JC is mobile and doesn’t hold on to the ball the way AR did earlier this year in GB. When you’re getting hit releasing on your back foot on a 3 step drop, there’s a problem. As bad as the pass blocking is, the run blocking is just atrocious (we’re ranked #32), so the offense is extremely limited.
Add our OC’s predictable play calling (he’s averaging a #26 ranked offense in 2 stints with the Bears, I believe) and 3 new WRs playing this year + Hester who is learning on the job (not having played at WR until last year) and it’s a recipe for disaster. The receivers don’t fight for balls or rack up YAC too often either, and sometimes have trouble getting open. Also, QB and receivers are often not on the same page.
Add some odds and ends like Kruetz’s tendency to fire shotgun snaps at the knees and awful penalties (WR false starts, personal fouls) and ill timed penalties (4 quarter game on line, negating big plays, leads to 3rd or 4th and a mile) and things look quite grim regardless of who is under center.
I like any team that earns its mustard playing D. I enjoy watching the Bears. It’s too bad there down this year. I expect a good fight. They have the players to turn it on a paly here or there. We just have to run, eliminate mistakes and penalties and get an early lead so our D can do what they used to best-ball hawk.
We are a heavily penalized team. You will do us a favor not throwing deep. We will get our share of pass interference calls. We have a rep. for this so it hasn’t helped. Fear Ray Rice. He’ll drive you crazy with his cuts and balance. I try not to get overly impressed but this guy is a lock Pro-bowler for years to come. Receiving, Mason is steady Eddie and has basically save Baltimores passing game for many years. How the Titans let him go way back when is crazy. He is a pro’s pro…with 3 Unsportsmanlike penalties this year. errr.
Ray Lewis is still the leader but he’s slowed and not great in the passing game. TE"s have success behind him on 3rd and longs. Our pass zone stinks 15 yards in.
Players to watch- Ladarius “Minimalu” Webb is a special player. I would actually like to se him play offense once on a while. He is a smaller guy but one of our best tacklers and pressure guys. he actually puts more pressure on the QB than 70 million dollar man Suggs (Sluggs) who your welcome to trade for.
Keep an eye on RT Gaither, LT/RT Oher, LB/DE Paul Kruger, Rice (can’t help that), Webb, LB/DE J. Johnson, LB Ellerbe (maybe), LB Jameel McClain (maybe) and LeRon (Not LayRon) McClaine. These guys are our building blocks.
Looking forward to a great and cold game. 3-6 inches of snow on Saturday. That’s a lot here! LOL.
Hello Ravens fans best of luck; please win convincingly!
The Bears have been awful against the run and the pass. Obviously we’ve been steamrolled by the run. Right now our CBs are hurt and sick, we’ve had a lot of changes in the secondary, and the pass rush from the front 4 has been non-existent against all but the most worthless OLines.
What kind of run/pass ratio are you guys expecting from the Ravens offense? Are you expecting the Ravens to stick to basics and mow us down with the run (like Detroit), or take advantage of injuries, ineptitude, and inexperience and use this as a confidence builder for Flacco to get more comfortable in the passing game? Also, how is your ST coverage? At this point I’m watching mostly to evaluate Williams at LT, see development at WR (hopefully) and secondary, and to hang my hat on the ST.
PS the AFCN is my favorite division to watch (besides the NFCN by default I guess). Always fun to watch tough pass rushers and run stuffers, and ball hawks most of all. Defensive & ST scores are much more entertaining in my book. Ed Reed isn’t expected to play, is he? I hope he does, to keep things interesting (getting Stoneface fired would be a plus, as well).
Hi. I think we will commit to the run BUT Cams giddy desire to pass deep when the run is just starting to take hold will keep the game close. I see a 50/50 split with pass and run. It’s good to have a balance but it’s when you pass that can hurt. I pray that we establish the run early even if it starts out sluggish. With 3 pro-bowl running backs just putting a little wear and tear on your D early can be judged a success.
Cam will throw at least 8 times to Rice. I pretty much count those as runs. That type of pass has done wnders for Joe’s stats. Rice has really made him look good but Flacco has struggled in the red zone. He has killed us with INT’s at the worst possible times. I hope he’s beyond that.
Our ST’s on coverage is okay. No glaring holes as we have a bunch of decent young and fast LB’s that are getting time on ST. Our return unit is hit an miss. Nothing special but Carr and Webb can break a 24.5 yarder every now and then on KO’s. You totally have the ST advantage. We have a synthetic field that should be bone dry even though we are getting snow Sat. into Sun. morning.
I think Reed is out. He’s having a down year. His injuries seem worse than advertised. He’ll miss 3 straight w/ith this Sunday. Suggs is playing a little gimpy and hasn’t done anything this year to prove his new 70 million contract. He is being shown up by the ageless wonder Trevor Pryce who has 6 sacks. We are actually better with rookie Kruger in “Sluggs” spot. Kruger is faster and healthy…motivated.
I hope we run 65% of the game. Flacco has me worried. I’m not sold on his leadership and crunch time deceision making yet.
You sure you're talking about the Ravens?
…has struggled in the red zone. He has killed us with INT’s at the worst possible times.
…red zone INTs, QB leadership & decision making, D players making $ not plays (yes Tommie Harris, I am talking about you), key defensive injuries….
Yes, the Ravens indeed!
Flacco has thrown four RZ INT’s and in all four games we were in them until then. Lost all four and with those picks being TDs instead, who knows what our record would have been?
