Let's Be Rational WCG

After Sunday's debacle in Paul Brown Stadium Soldier Field Lambeau Field the Metrodome, Lovie' s seat has gotten a tad hotter, and the call for coaching changes will only get louder as our woeful Bears close out this miserable season. We've all heard the arguments against Lovie's maddening stoicism, but shouldn't we really be focusing on how he handles his responsibilities, not his emotions? Yes a head coach is a leader, but a head coach is supposed to put the right players on the field and the right coaches behind them with the best game plan. Is Lovie meeting those needs for our team?

Star-divide

Responsibilty 1: Coaching Staff
Assistant coaches, offensive and defensive coordinators, and position coaches can all share the blame for the ugly sight we see every week on game day (Dave Toub is exempted). But isn't it Lovie's responsibility to choose his staff?

We're on our 4th D Line coach, 4th secondary coach, and 3rd DC. Our "best offseason acquisition" has produced a much of a pass rush. Promoting BFF Bob Babich didn't improve the defense. Even Lovie's own play calling has been downright terrible at times. Meanwhile, the offense has struggled under the same OC since 2005. Considering that we underachieve and play poorly at virtually every position (ST excluded), I can't help but think that a lot of our coaches aren't doing their jobs particularly well.

Responsibility 2: Personnel Decisions
GM Jerry Angelo's had his fair share of draft misses, and free agent flops, but how involved is Lovie Smith in personnel decisions? We've seen an awful lot of players from the Rams come our way, with little success. I bet the Rams are happy we helped them clear some cap room by taking Pisa and Pace this year. What about Adam Archuletta - remember him?

More importantly, isn't it Lovie who decides who is on the field and who is on the bench? I was so embarrassed when NFL network broke down the Bears (lack of) run game and showed Omiyale whiffing or just blocking no one. He started at LG for another 2-3 weeks. With our current record, roster, lack of draft picks, CBA issues, etc...  we should give DA, Kahlil Bell, Gaines Adams and others more playing time and let Williams finish the season at LT. The focus of the rest of our season should be to assess our most pressing needs for 2010. Lovie has confirmed that he will not do this. So yeah, business as usual. The player that makes the most money at his position will be on the field and stay there, unless that guy is just inexcusably bad. Even then, he might get a pass.

Lastly, is it Lovie's decision or Jerry's to continue to experiment with moving players from position to position? Frank is our RT LG, Daniel is our CB FS, Rashied is our DB WR Special Teams star. At any rate, our talent evaluation and player development are quite lacking, and Lovie Smith is likely a part of the problem.

Responsibility 3: Strategy and Game Play
For the 11th time this season, we've seen a  team that has looked shamefully unprepared. We didn't game plan for the Falcons' "No Huddle," or Cedric Benson running up the field at will, or any number of other things that bit us in the ass this season.

The only time it actually looks like we have a game plan, is when it's painfully obvious that said plan is not working. FYI forcing Minnesota pass last week and leaving Orlando Pace alone on Jared Allen was most certainly not working. And the prevailing ideology seems to be "if at first you don't succeed, fail, fail, again." I can accept some bad decisions, but please do something, anything, to salvage things when the game plan comes up short.

When our ill-prepared Bears are not getting mauled by good teams, we're shooting ourselves in the foot with costly penalties and mistakes against mediocre and bad teams. There are no excuses for WR false starts, holding calls that wipe out big plays, or any number of stupid things this team does frequently; and no excuse for a coach to allow such a lack of discipline.

So "heart" aside, is Lovie Smith a good coach? Has he put the Bears in the best position to win games?  I think not. Disagree? That's what the comments section is for.

P.S. This is my first fanpost. Be gentle...

Nice post..

i wish i could vote, but i cant bring myself to choose one.. Lovie just seems to blow in all areas equally..

I agree with GtM it was a difficult choice

I do agree that Khalil Bell needs to be given some serious reps. I don’t think he carried the ball one time the last game, after the previous game when he broke off a long run. He needs to be looked at given that Forte has had some problems. Its not all on Forte, but Bell’s running style may be more effective with our current (lack of run blocking) O line.

Nice first post!

But, I don’t know why “Showing emotion, yelling at refs, and getting in players’ faces” wasn’t a choice. :)

nice

and if it’s purely drafting what happened to some of the players who made it to other teams.

by DaHamsta on Dec 3, 2009 3:12 PM CST reply actions

True, it seems like we have more than our fair share of injured players who are successful elsewhere

Somebody mentioned Mike Brown on another post. Did he ever finish a whole season in Chicago?

by TrialsBass on Dec 3, 2009 8:30 PM CST up reply actions

his first 3 or 4 years he didn't miss a game

it all went south starting with a great win at lambeau that the bears had no business winning back in 2004. think he went on IR from an injury that game and was a glass joe ever since. although i have seen him this year on sportscenter getting burned/run through for kc. i bet he sends miles austin some coal for xmas.

So Tired...

Of Lovie. Fire him or don’t, just show me we are willing to pay some money to fill the holes we have.
Pace = Fat Hole
Shaffer = Horrible replacement

Is Tait REALLY retired? Was St. Clair REALLY that BAD? Forte ran sweet behind those guys….

I hate being a Bears fan.

Other areas Lovie lacked in this season ...
  • No tackling in practice has transferred to poor tackling on the field.
  • No designed roll-outs or scrambling rules put in place for Cutler.
  • Failure to address the receiver position in the off-season.
  • Extinguishing the light of Devin Hester. Turning a God into a mere mortal.
  • Adherence to Cover 2 almost to the exclusion of other coverages.
  • Failure to ask more of Ron Turner in the offensive strategies presented.
  • Failure to protect the quarterback using any means necessary.
  • Failure to utilise the speed of the receivers & the arm strength and mobility of the quarterback.
  • No immediate punishments/admonishings for disciplinary breaches. Blind-eye attitude to discipline. Saying that there was “nothing he could do” about Urlacher’s comments.

We can still generalize

Those are all staffing, personnel, and strategy/game plan/philosophy issues.

Jerry Angelo Is Not Off The Hook.

He went along with all of Lovie’s decisions that led to the deterioration of this team since 2006. There is no excuse for it and we should not have to accept the level of incompetence displayed the last 3 Years at Halas Hall. Our Super Bowl Running back is gone. Our 4th pick 1st round running back that replaced our Super Bowl running back is gone, our Defensive coordinator from the Super Bowl is gone. Our dynamic Kick Off/Punt retrner from 2006 is gone,(well he’s still there but they messed him up). They basically took one of the best football teams in the NFL in 2006 and made decisions that turned it into one of the worst 3 years later. Unbelievable………………..

by Gesiakob on Dec 4, 2009 2:39 PM CST reply actions

Not letting JA off the hook, BUT

Choosing DCs and other staff other than HC is Lovie’s responsibility. We can only speculate on the player personnel decisions. To my knowledge no one has taken responsibility for making Hester a WR or choosing to get rid of Jones and Benson.

by TrialsBass on Dec 4, 2009 3:37 PM CST up reply actions

No Surprise There

no one has taken responsibility, lol, I wonder why? And the amazing thing is there are Bears fans and people that run this site that agree with some of the decisions made. If we take a 3 Year timeline Angelo/Lovie inc. get a FAIL grade.

by Gesiakob on Dec 4, 2009 3:55 PM CST reply actions

And you would do a better job, yes?

It’s funny how the path of football management eluded you when you’re obviously so much brighter than an NFL General Manager and his coaches. Just sayin’!

Me thinks

meh.

but it’s humorous, to me, that people are all for a move one week and then bashing JA or Lovie the next for that same move. Semantics, maybe; ironic, definitely.

I Never Stated I would Do A Better Job Smudgers.

I don’t believe I have the experience to be a Head Coach Or a General Manager. What I am saying is the people that were qualified and hired for those positions failed. So if as a fan you prefer to say they performed at an acceptable level than that is your opinion.

by Gesiakob on Dec 4, 2009 8:24 PM CST up reply actions

i would do a better job

clearly i am the man that is needed to right the wrongs here. after all, i have taken the bears to the playoffs for 3 straight years on madden. all-madden skill level too, booya. t think i will take a picture of my madden awesomeness and send it to ted phillips in lieu of an actual resume. i will take suggestions from you guys once i move into angelo’s office in february.

by reefermadness3 on Dec 4, 2009 8:50 PM CST up reply actions

Can we get a 1/2 GM?

I would be satisfied with a 1/2 GM that drafts on Day 1 only. JA can stay on as 1/2 GM that drafts on day 2 only. And can 1/2 GM #1 also handle Free Agent acquisitions.

by TrialsBass on Dec 4, 2009 9:00 PM CST up reply actions

this would be a good move as well

although getting some people from a nearby bar to throw darts at pictures of potential top picks on a wall would probably have a higher boom vs bust rate than the sorry day 1 history of mr. angelo

wouldn’t that be the day if halas hall hired a consultant of some sort for the job you described. it’d be pretty sweet though.

by reefermadness3 on Dec 4, 2009 10:21 PM CST up reply actions

I heard a sorry stat yesterday

JA has not drafted a pro-bowler since Tommie Harris (in 2004?). I have a feeling just about anyone on WGC could look through scouting reports and mock drafts and have better day 1 picks.

It seems like JA over values players on day 1 IMO. Wasn’t Garret Wolfe drafted in the 2nd round? My other big issues with JA are investing in damaged goods (ie C. Williams, T. Harris), drafting “athletic” players that they try to find a spot for (usually too high in the draft). I also don’t agree with choosing a player based on a physical archetype, rather than actual production.

by TrialsBass on Dec 6, 2009 2:16 PM CST up reply actions

Actually,

what you were saying is that you find it amazing there are people that run this site and other fans that agreed with some of the moves that JA and company made.

So we aren’t discussing “semantics,” which moves are you speaking of?

Okay....Here Are My Top 3

1. Trading Thomas Jones
2. Cutting 1st Round Pick Cedric Benson
3. Taking the best Return man in the history of the NFL and turning him into a Receiver. Arguably one of the worst personal moves ever made in the history of the game. Trying to turn Devin Hester into a Receiver.

by Gesiakob on Dec 5, 2009 4:50 PM CST reply actions

1. Who really wanted Jones gone? No matter, it’s not the point. TJ wanted to be traded and Jerry granted that wish – what was he supposed to do?
2. Hell yeah, people supported this move. CedBen wasn’t working out. His didn’t get along with his teammates and d*mn sure didn’t help his case with his effort on the field for the Bears. Not to mention his numerous off the field issues. Despite what he is now, he was not “that” with us.
3. People have argued this point over and over and over with you. So, it’s no real use anymore.

And seriously, is the reply button really that difficult to figure out?

Believe Whatever You Like Smudgers

The bottom line is all the moves ‘Dumber And Dumber’ made since the 2006 Super Bowl appearance are suspect. I mean Lovie Smith and Jerry Angelo.

so then

from this statement clearly then you getting on the hatejay wagon now. tsk tsk.

also, i am declaring your top 3 list null and void because you chose to omit the amazingly awful error of signing archuleta after showing harris the door. everyone has the right to their own opinion but really, in the words of keyshawn johnson, C’MON MAN!

WOW!

I only listed a partial list of incometent moves refersmoker or whatever your name is. I have made a more complete list in other postings.
