Urlacher Was Right, Having Said That...
If you watched the season finale of “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” or even if you’ve just been a member of society for a considerable amount of time, then you know that any clause that starts off in the fashion of “Having said that,” or “I mean no disrespect,” for all intensive purposes, will end in having disrespected the subject of conversation.
Enter Brian Urlacher, who in a recent radio interview (mind you, Urlacher has plenty of time to talk considering he’s not playing this season) said, “I'm not taking a shot at Jay,” and then immediately went on to take a shot at Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler.
I'm not taking a shot at Jay. I'm not one bit taking a shot at Jay. He throws it better, right? And we haven't tried to run the ball as much. That's true. But Kyle has won games. His formula works. So I'm not taking a shot at Jay or Kyle.
Even though Urlacher began and ended his sentence with “I’m not taking a shot at Jay,” the fact is, he did take a shot at Jay, and it was a hefty one. By saying that Kyle’s “formula” works and that Kyle “won games,” he is essentially saying that Cutler’s “formula” doesn’t work and that Cutler doesn’t win games. Now, if that’s not taking a shot a Jay Cutler, what is?

Orton won games as a result of coaching
Jay Cutler has been sucking it up as a result of bad play calling. His interception numbers are high because we have an inept OL that causes him to have to make quick decisions and a virtually nonexistant running game..

I Agree...
While some of the blame has to go Jay Cutler’s way (ehemm, 19 interceptions), the lack of a running game and the poor playcalling has more to do with the Bears problems than all of Cutler’s arid throws combined.

yeah, I mean he has made a lot of bonehead throws, especially the INTs in the endzone
but with the WR corp we have, the running game, the OL, and a rapidly fading coach….it’s not all Jay. And in addition, if Orton were that good, why did he not produce as a Bear? Sure he won all those games that rookie season, but it wasn’t because of him; he had more INT’s than TD passes; the defense won that year

the 2005 defense
the one we had in ortons rookie year was one of the best i have seen in a while. they played so mean and nasty. they punched you in the mouth then took the ball away and scored with it man i miss those days so much!!!!!

man me too
I loved watching that defense play when Vasher was actually good and we had Mike Brown. Nearly every position was elite in talent
Wrigley Bound in the Summer of 2010
there was so much heart and just a mean attitude
they had no offense but they didnt care! they scored themselves!

Nice post...
but the phrase is “for all intents and purposes” not “intensive purposes” Minor word switch, but it changes the meaning completely.
Nonetheless, I am willing to forgive the Cutler mistakes because no QB is perfect. Manning, Brady, Elway, Montana, et al have all thrown “bad” passes.
What angers me is the fact that the blame for the piss poor offense has the least to do with Cutler. He is trying to make other players better. The problem is that even that effort goes unappreciated. As far as Urlacher goes, he can forfeit his salary for the year since he has contributed literally nothing to the team. His dumb ass should just shut the hell up and get healed. He tackles better than Hillenmeyer, right? Stupid jackass Urlacher hasn’t played well in almost 3 years. Kinda the pot calling the kettle black, huh?!

You expect accurate English on an English-language sports blog? Unpossible!
As for the rest of your comment: spot on, as usual.

hey watcher
I don’t agree with your interpretation. Clearly Urlacher was referring to the offensive system that is set up here with the Bears by Ron Turner. He’s saying that Orton’s skill set and temperament are a better fit to the system and to the players in the system. It’s pretty obvious that this team is not set up to take Cutler’s talents to the best advantage. As for not playing this season, one could say that none of the players who are sleep walking through games since Urlacher got hurt have been really playing the game either. Briggs had his chance to be the man after Url got hurt and he has not shown much – not even being a team leader by calling a meeting or calling anyone out for not doing their job. Cutler hasn’t made a peep about the offense sucking the big one since early in the season when he sort of criticized Hester and then Lovie and Turner and Angelo put the kibosh on that real damn quick. No balls there! I think what Urlacher did was what needed to be said, but too bad some of the other so called team leaders didn’t sack up and do it first.

Perhaps the Bear should trade Urlacher or cut him – let some other team have him since he “hasn’t played well in almost 3 years”. We’ve already gotten a taste of what this defense is like without Urlacher, and if he was traded away or cut, that would usher in such a rebuilding that would make the Dark Ages seem like a Sunday picnic in Hawaii by comparison. Urlacher has earned the right to express his opinion, is my thought on this matter.

Mael...
you can reply to me directly, I can take the criticism. While Urlacher is better than Hilenmeyer, he would NOT have made this defense appreciably better this year, but we’ll never know. I do have respect for Urlacher’s past, but his recent play (since 2007) has been mediocre even by his own admission. Further, I would have more respect for his opinions about Cutler’s value to the team if he were not sitting his sorry ass on the bench, again not helping this team. How are we going to know what Urlacher is worth, if he continues to get injured? I agree that a trade may not be the best step forward at MLB for this team, but it has to be an option if the Bears can upgrade talent in return. IMO, trades are about getting the right player into the right fit for that player and that team. Trades are not a way to “rid” your roster of unwanted players; that’s what FA and outright release is for. Urlacher’s “past” doesn’t come to play every week, his “present” does; when its not on IR. Ask yourself , “What has Urlacher done to help this year’s team?”

Urlacher wouldn't have improved us ?
Please. HH is a blak hole for talent. Of the numerous blotches Hunter Hillenmeyer (a name like that got you beat up when I was a kid, no questions)has left daubed across the star-studded linebacking greats of the Cchicago Bears, none were so indicative as LeSean McCoy’s TD to finish off the Bears. Remaining in his gap, he managed to not only whiff a simple tackle, but not come close to even making a tackle. You wouldn’t have to ask the monstrous mound of muscle that is Urlacher too many times if he’d mind nipping in and taking out the garbage. Embarassing. Hillenmeyer is an embarrassment to the position – an extra special position at the Bears. How far awy from a defensive captain is he in terms of talent, presence & leadership ? Urlacher put on 10-12 lbs of pure muscle in the off-season ? Sorry, if he plays … we’re not 4-7. He’s a pr*ck. But at MLB he’s solid.

I mostly agree with your assessment of HH...
but my point is that it is not knowable whether Urlacher would have made this team better. It’s a likely assumption, but not a certainty. And my point is about loudmouth jerks who sit on the sidelines and spew their venom but aren’t helping to make things better. On the reverse, I watched Urlacher tough out injuries while Ceddy Benson whined like a bitch. I will continue to support any player who gives it up for the team. Urlacher, when and if he plays again, is better than HH. I do not dispute it. My crack about Hillenmeyer was to point out how stupid Urlacher sounds when he backslaps Cutler by calling Orton’s game a winning formula.

He's not expressing an opinion ...
… so much as he’s starting a big and powerful and well established cancer in the locker room. He’s a defensive captain and this is something that will drive a wedge right through the Bears. Urlacher’s gone baby, Urlacher’s gone …

Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.
The sound of Brian Urcancer reversing hard for the second time this year. Well, keep on reversing all the way out of Chicago and leave a first round pick behind when you go.
and leave a first round pick behind when you go
Would you give up a first round draft pick for him? If he was from another team, we probably would. Meh.

No other team is giving a 1st rounder
At least not that I can see for a 31 yr old, 10th year in the league linebacker that has shown to be injury prone the last few years.
He has known back and hamstring reoccurring problems and now add a smashed and rebuilt wrist.
Dear Mr. Urlacher
With your vast knowledge of the game, one would expect you to know that Jay Cutler does not call nor decide how many run plays are called during the game.
Nor does he get to chose which “formula” to put onto the field. But thanks Mr. Urlacher for you enlightened statement, I feel so much smarter now.
(Although I can’t blame you for complaining, you just might start with your 26th or so ranked defense. Seems like as a D captain, you might want to start there)
