Stay Classy, WCG!

There are a ton of excuses that we can throw out for why our team has reached maximum sucktitude this season. Our QB's penchant for giving the ball away, our offensive line, our play-calling, our defensive scheme, our secondary, the lack of front-line pressure, our draft prowess, our head coach, et cetera, et cetera.

It's quite easy for us to get frustrated watching the current product that the Bears are putting on display each Sunday. And while I don't particularly live or die on the outcome of a game, I somewhat understand it when people do. That being said...

Can we, as fans - nay - as decent human beings, show some common decency on this board. Desiring for Lovie to get canned is one thing, have at it! However, seriously hoping for him to die so that you can feel happy about a game is simply uncalled for. And I used to think that I had seen it all when posters would wish injury on other players. I know it shouldn't, but people on the interwebs suprise me on the regular.

As someone said last night, WCG was (and still is to me) a breath of fresh air from the typical "my team iz btr than ur team, lolz" type of sport blog. I've learned a ton since becoming a member here, and have definitely raised my football IQ because of it. WCG is, without a doubt, the best damn Chicago Bears sports blog on the internet, I guess I'd just like to keep it that way.

I'll let Ron Burgandy sign us off...

AMEN!

Last night sickened me on two levels. Football and a couple of the comments.

Agreed

MCG is a great blog, but I also think it has something to do with Chicago Bears fans. Bears fans are the opposite of Packers fans. Packer fans think that their team can walk on water and Bears fans have always been ultra critical of their team.

by beardwnbacon on Dec 21, 2009 8:20 AM CST reply actions

huh?

I think you missed the point.

Wishing death on someone because you don’t like the way that they coach =/= ultra-critical.

I got the point.

I was just pointing out that Bears fans always seem to be more critical of their team than other fans. This might lead to them to taking it too far. Fans who make football their life take things too far sometimes and it’s annoying. But, at least Bears fans don’t clap when an opposing teams player is injured.

Anyway, I wasn’t disagreeing with you at all. I totally agree with you and was just solidifying a point.

Being a fan from abroad, this is my first season of interacting with other Bears fans via the power of the ‘net. If I only came here for the game threads, where all sorts of people who don’t show up during the week log in to voice their, er, thoughts, I would have come to the conclusion that Bears fans were a bunch of bandwagoning, self-loathing retards.

That’s not true, of course. Unfortunately they’re also the most vocal.

I dunno, last night

and the Bengals game is a pretty big tossup for me right now. I almost think the Bengals game might’ve been worse than last night, because it was so damn unexpected.

Going into the Raven’s game, I was reasonably sure we weren’t going to win. The Bengals game I was thinking, “alright, this is where they’re going to shape it up, and get it straight.” And then they threw up all over themselves and looked like rubber poop monsters.

It is why Bears fans have a reputation for being major idiots. Like the Cubs fanbase, a few idiots ruin it for everybody else.

Hmmm...
It is why Bears fans have a reputation for being major idiots

You could visit any sports blog, on any given day, and find idiots posting comments on the internet on any team.

You should see some of the stuff people get enbanninated for on some of these SBN sites. WCG, Bears fans, etc, is no different from any other team’s fan base. Idiots abound.

To generalize one group is similar to racism….I like to call it teamcism. It’s unacceptable and will not be tolerated ’round these parts.

There are definitely

some cities who are more progressive, and others who seem to be stuck in the dark ages. For the most part, people are the same everywhere… but there are definitely some dirty, dirty places in this country who have pro sports teams.

You are all gentlemen (and ladies) and good judges of cheap whiskey.

by Dane Noble on Dec 22, 2009 7:00 AM CST up reply actions

Just because

Just because you haven’t seen it first hand doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. I think it’s fair to say that no group of fans is perfect no matter where you live. I’ve heard many people say Packers fans seem to be the most friendly, but with my personal experiences I have to disagree.

by beardwnbacon on Dec 22, 2009 7:00 AM CST up reply actions

The bigger idea is demographics,

not which a person roots for. Sure, people from GB are generally very friendly… the town is similar to most working-class small towns. But it has nothing to do with their sports team, it’s just the culture.

You are all gentlemen (and ladies) and good judges of cheap whiskey.

i also haven't seen

tv reports of fans throwing beer on players, garbage on the field stealing players belongings off them, or yelling racist things from the bleachers. but oh yeah, it totally happens everywhere.

Have you ever monitored an entire stadium on gameday?

Or been to every bar where there are teams’ die-hard fans? Until you have, which is impossible, I wouldn’t as a whole make statements like this.

you missed the point

there are highly publicized events that happen in chicago that do not happen in other places. ichiro suzuki doesn’t talk about how the fans shout racist things to him from the stands, unlike the at least 3 black ballplayers who have mentioned it on the cubs in 5 years.

same with the other events, they do not happen everywhere.

by mike b on Dec 22, 2009 10:54 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah right
same with the other events, they do not happen everywhere.

Just about everywhere. Racism isn’t relegated to just Chicago fans; try the entire southeast, and most major urban areas in the US. Do you realize how naive you sound? Seriously, you’re speaking for 350 million people!

Racism isn’t relegated to just Chicago fans; try the entire southeast, and most major urban areas in the US

Do you realize how naive you sound? Seriously, you’re speaking for 350 million people!

might t as well been talking to yourself, although i guess your number is smaller. chicago is worse than other places. that was the original point, and the evidence is there. not sure how saying that has me speaking for 350 million people, but to be honest, i’m not really sure i care for the explanation.

by mike b on Dec 23, 2009 11:01 AM CST up reply actions

It means

there are racists everywhere in the US….make sense? Saying Chicago has the most is pure conjecture and nonsense.

by mike b on Dec 23, 2009 6:43 PM CST up reply actions

By saying this
there are highly publicized events that happen in chicago that do not happen in other places

you’re assuming Chicago has more than your average city. Or are you implying the town has more out-spoken racists? Give me a break, and stop chasing your tail.

"But it doesn't matter what I do, what I choose. I'm what's wrong. This is fate" - Dexter season 4....I mean Lovie season 6.

by propheteer on Dec 23, 2009 8:51 PM CST up reply actions

no

i’m saying that there are highly publicized events that don’t seem to be happening in other places. its probably a media coverup.

you sound like someone who has never lived in chicago or never lived anywhere else.

i’m not worried about the average city (which is undefinable anyway) as far as average pro sports cities. again, show me where else these things are happening even on just the publicized level. unless you think the publicized instances just so happened to be the only ones by some unfortunate coincidence.

by mike b on Dec 23, 2009 11:15 PM CST up reply actions

There are plenty of instances of racism not in Chicago

How about Mutumbo being called a monkey during a game in Houston?

Italy vs. Spain soccer match in Italy- racist slurs towards an Ivory Coast player I believe.

Carmelo Anthony’s wife was berated in the stands in Dallas.

Lewis Hamilton- Formula One driver receives racial slurs in Barcelona.

Rush Limbaugh, Don Imus, Jimmy the Greek, Kelly Tilghman (Tiger Woods), Tony Kornhesier.

They happen to be broadcasters/analysts/etc., but still are sports fans and should be held to a higher standard than your average egg-head of a fan.

"But it doesn't matter what I do, what I choose. I'm what's wrong. This is fate" - Dexter season 4....I mean Lovie season 6.

by propheteer on Dec 24, 2009 10:25 AM CST up reply actions

Actually, it's an easy conclusion to draw. Forget you wrote this?

but the shit i have seen growing up in chicago is stuff i do not see in seattle

tv reports of fans throwing beer on players, garbage on the field stealing players belongings off them, or yelling racist things from the bleachers. but oh yeah, it totally happens everywhere.

The clincher…

chicago is worse than other places. that was the original point, and the evidence is there.

“Worse than other places” by default implies “most” in this topic.

There’s always going to be idiots tarnishing whole fanbases and they exist in any fanbase, not just the Cubs. See: Incident of Gambino, Tom. But not all White Sox fans run on the field and beat up first base coaches. I’m sure the Seattle fanbase isn’t all a bunch of pristine angels.

Media coverup? Maybe it’s just the media doesn’t feel it’s important enough or lacks the resources to report on – Chicago’s a much larger media market than Seattle last I knew (I think it ranks only behind or in some grouping with New York, Boston and LA?) so there’s more resources to follow these types of stories.

by SJS_illini on Dec 24, 2009 7:26 AM CST up reply actions

actually
Saying Chicago has the most is pure conjecture and nonsense.

this most refers to chicago having the most racists

chicago is worse than other places. that was the original point, and the evidence is there

this post says that chicago has more problems than other places. i have never calimed to know the racist density of either place.

by mike b on Dec 24, 2009 7:52 AM CST up reply actions

Bigger media, more people, more diversity.

That doesn’t mean it’s more prevalent than other cities. Where’s your proof beyond MB claiming racists in the stands? He’s not the most reliable or mentally stable person to use as an example, btw.

"But it doesn't matter what I do, what I choose. I'm what's wrong. This is fate" - Dexter season 4....I mean Lovie season 6.

by propheteer on Dec 24, 2009 10:28 AM CST up reply actions

you

are in no position to offer any insight on someone you don’t know’s mental stability. you “know” what the media told you.

the examples for racism and general chicago fan douchebaggery have been listed above.

if there is an “average racist/douchebag fan city” then there must be above and below average ones. through public actions alone chicago makes a good case to be above average.

the same city that when it gets an asian ball player thorws on “Horry Kow” shirts and bamboo peasant hats. classy.

by JerBear50 on Dec 24, 2009 2:52 AM CST up reply actions

Sure

There are going to be subtle differences, but for the most part fans are similar everywhere. I live in a transient city (Denver), where only one team (Broncos) have a huge, dedicated fan-base. Take a Nuggets/Avs fan vs. a Broncos and you have an entirely different fan, but generally people who are “true” fans will be as passionate as the next guy/girl. It may not show on the exterior like a Yankee or an Eagles fan, but certainly the knowledge of the game is still apparent. Take L.A., they’re extremely laid back and are late to games, whereas us Bear fans are not and wouldn’t think of being late for kickoff.
