Around SBN: Missouri Crashes The Top Line After Kansas Win

Who do you want to see in 2010?

Lets be honest here.  If the Bears do decide to eat the 10-11 mil left on Lovies contract for the final 2 years (please - please - please), it is unlikely that they are going to be willing to go all out for a Coach like Shanahan or Cowher.  With this in mind, Jeff Dickerson of ESPN Chicago lists three possible candidates that would cost much less.

I want to hear from you.  Who do you invision as the HC of the Bears in 2010 if Lovie is let go?  Who do you like as OC and DC?  Will we bring in a former Head Coach or will we pilfer an up and coming assistant?

It may just be wishful thinking and we will be stuck with Lovie and Co. for 1 more year, but it is close enough to Christmas that we can put together a wish list and hope for the best.

I really like Dickerson's choices except RR

My friend also mentioned the OC from GB. He’s really turned Rodgers into an elite QB, and guided an offense in the top-8 in most catergories. Here’s my list…

1. Grimm
2. Heirmerdinger
3. Peter Carmichael Jr.
4. Joe Philbin (Cheese OC)

I agree - Grimm

Was Grimm interviewed during the process when Lovie Smith was chosen? I seem to recall his name mentioned back then as a possible candidate.

Grim was interviewed

and was actually considered a favorite to win the job. Grim was also considered in some circles to be the favorite to win the Steelers job before it went to Tomlin.

Instead

the Bears do what they always do….go for a DC with a reserved personality.

firing rivera was one of the stupidest moves made

Not many link the decline of the defense with the firing of chico. After he left in 2006 this defense took a huge fall.
I would love to see him come to town

I disagree

but it’s up for debate. The combination of injuries, age, and poor drafting/development has been the bigger issues. SD is widely considered to be a team with great talent, yet RR and his defense haven’t been very good.

i would like rob ryan dc of the browns to have a shot at the job. he has the same frame of mind as his brother hc at the jets.

good call

And we know he wouldn’t have a problem getting into anyone’s face…including Cutler’s

First choice would be Shanahan, no question
Second would be keep Lovie a year and hire Gruden in 2011. It’ll be worth it in the long run I think.
Third would sadly be Ron Rivera. I do not want to see any part of Bill Cowher, or anybody like Russ Grimm, Leslie Frazier, or the sort. Rob Ryan wouldn’t be good (Rex Ryan isn’t very good; he’s just got a franchise with deep pockets and an outstanding defense that Eric Mangini built) but he would be fun.

Is Jerry Angelo fired yet?
Is Vinny Del Negro fired yet?

Don't like Gruden or Cowher...

both had problems developing a good offense over many seasons. Grimm seems to be the guy no one wants to hire for whatever reason; that makes me stop and think twice. Shanny is the best big name fit and, IMO, makes the most sense, but only if he brings along a proven good DC. Rivera is a good DC, but I don’t know about his HC leadership skills. I don’t credit Rivera with all the Bears successes on defense, but he was the best DC under Lovie without question. When Rivera was let go, I started to question Lovie’s ego/judgment. I would like to see Shanny as HC/GM with Rivera as DC/Asst. HC. Throw in a decent OC (say Kubiak or Heimerwhatshisname) and develop not only the players, but the coaching staff as well. MY GOD, THAT"S A LONG TERM STRATEGY…IT’LL NEVER HAPPEN!

Since former SB winning coaches have never gone anywhere else and won

and the fact that despite what we want to think, the McCaskeys’ don’t have the deep pockets that some other teams have, I’d go after a hot, up & comer, with some attitude. The first guy who comes to mind is Jim Harbaugh, who has done a great job at Stanford as their HC. (I have to give credit for No It All, since he mentioned this a few months ago)

He has a history with the Bears dating back to “da Coach”, he’s always had an attitude about him, his QB play when he was at Indy was very good so he is someone Cutler “should” listen to, and he always struck me as a really bright football guy.

Couple him with a good personnel man and you have the cornerstone for a great team for years to come…..but stop giving extensions after one good season!!!!!

Like your thinking

Harbaugh would be a great HC but the issue becomes Angelo. JH would be a pretty good indicator of talent but of course JA would do what he wants and the cycle of wasted/terrible draft picks and free agents would continue and of course Harbaugh would take the blame. The good thing about an established coach is that he would require that he be a part of the draft process and FA signings. A rookie coach would be less inclined to demand that kind of authority. of course this is all hypothetical because we can never know until it happens but the Bears need a coach that can make his voice heard and put a stamp on the team because as of right now, it clearly is Angelo’s team

by frenchbears113 on Dec 23, 2009 11:28 AM CST up reply actions

Agreed, but if Angelo stays

I’d have to think he’d be on a real short leash so a guy like Harbaugh, who would be a fan favorite, might have more leverage than normal. Angelo can’t just keep blaming his HC’s if the team continues to under perform.
