Put Hester back or trade him

I know Hester had performed better than expected at WR this year and we should cut him some slack as he was recently converted from CB, but I think the team needs to be shaken up at every position, including him.  I don't think he'll ever be Steve Smith (if he does get there, it won't be for at least 2 or 3 more years and we don't have time to wait for that).

I say put him back on Special Teams only.  He's WAY more dangerous there when he can focus on return duties than at WR, and the overall benefit to the team is greater.  If the team isn't willing to put him back on SP only, he may be worth more as a 3rd maybe 2nd round draft pick via trade than one of our WRs.  (I hate saying trade him, I'd have to dump my #23 jersey, but desperate times call for desperate measures).

Am I crazy?

You may be crazy...

but, I would like to see him as a full time returner (punt and kick) and as the #3 (or #4) WR. An imaginative offensive coordinator would be able to get the ball in his hands in a variety of ways. Similar to DeSean Jackson in Philly or Josh Cribbs in Cleveland

I don't care that he is getting paid...

He was breaking NFL records while being paid peanuts…

The problem is the coaching staff has now stifled him, because they are afraid to get him hurt on kickoffs, because of their “Investment” in his salary.

Let him earn his salary by playing all the returns, and on all the offensive plays that he can still stand up for.

I see what Cribbs does in Cleveland

and think to myself boy we used to have one of those.

Agree with Wiltfong. A good OC should be able to mix him in at the receiver position and have him prosper, especially now that he has been given a taste of Wr and knows he position better.

Besides, when you put him in as a WR and he has that “reputation” again as a highly dangerous man (like Cribbs has this year and Hester had) it changes the defense focus and can open a big play for Knox or our true #1 (if Santa Angelo comes through this year)

Keep the Ferrari...just learn how to drive it!!!!

Hester is by far our best option for points, whether it be on Offense or on Special Teams…Just because our current administration doesn’t know how to utilize him to his full potential(common theme this year) doesn’t mean we should get rid of him.

The Jackson and Cribbs arguement is exactly why we need to keep Hester. Use him in the “RIGHT” situations, not 2-yard screen passes. Create ways for him to get the ball in his hands more, ie slant WR, Wildcat formations, tailback, punt returns, and put him in for kickoffs with Knox/Manning. If you have Hester and Knox/Manning at the goal line where are you going to kick the ball to?

He could get us a 2nd/3rd round pick, but as our best offensive weapon to trade him away now would be like selling your neighbor a new Ferrari for $5k because you don’t know how to drive a manual transmission. If you have the Ferrari…you better damn well know how to drive stick…The Bears need to find someone who can utilize his talents…

Just look at how successfully Reggie Bush is being used in NO…at the beginning of the season there was a lot of talk about he was a bust and should be traded…NO figured out the best way to get him involved with the offense, and they have a great shot at the Super Bowl.

Misuse

I’d like to see him on more drag patterns over the middle on misdirection plays. Have most of the offense going one way, like a designed rollout, and have him going the other way on a five yard pattern. It’s not going to be open all the time, but when he’s out in space he has a chance to take it to the house.

Angelo ruined this plan.

The Bears are tight with their nickels and Angelo cannot have a dedicated ST guy making #1 WR money. You’re right this is what Devin should be doing, but Angelo can’t allow it to happen as he’s fighting for his job.

Lol does it matter if hester is back returning?

Knox Manning and Bennet have all scored return tds so our blocking is very strong. I want hester on the field 40 or more plays as opposed to 7or 8 for returns.

I think he is very dynamic i like the point made about the way Jackson is used in philly and How Cribbs is used in cleveland get them the ball!

Put Hester back or trade him

Exactly.

Don’t listen to that f*cktard Deion Sanders yelling “PAY DA MAN” in his bright red nose and floppy shoes. Cleveland can see what happened here and should do the exact opposite.

I don’t think putting Hester back will even fix him. The Cold Hard Football Facts put together a piece a while ago talking about how fungible return men are – if the team can even get a 3rd rounder for Hester, they should absolutely do that.

Except it would be Angelo making the decisions, so it would just be a bust anyway.

Is Jerry Angelo fired yet?

Stop with your logic

Put the best return man in NFL history back to return kicks!?!?

That’s crazy talk — let’s see if he can play D-Line, maybe Safety.

U CRAZY!

you have to realize that to this organization Gaines Adams and Dan Bazuin are 2nd rounders.

Trade Hester and just watch him break records again for a real team with a real coaching staff. And we will have the equivalent of Dan Bazuin or Gaines Adams to show for it. Bethca it won’t take his new team 4 years to design a play to get the ball in his hands. Having Hester is a blessing regardless of whether he is returning kicks or playing WR. IMHO if we had a good coaching staff Hester would be able to do both without a hitch.

I understand that we need picks, but to compound the mistakes that have caused us to have no picks by trading our most explosive player makes no sense. I do worry that his recent (true) comments may make the incompetent fools in charge, that he was calling out, want to trade him if they are allowed to remain. How dare he be the only honest person about the woeful state of this org.!!

One thing no one is mentioning is that Hester seems to have lost his ability to return anything.

Perhaps he can improve if he “concentrates” on returns, but for 2 years now, he has looked terrible in the return game. Knox and Manning both have looked better than he has on KR and Bennett looks good on PR’s going back to the preseason when they put him back there several times.

I have my doubts as to whether he can ever recapture the magic he had the first two years in the league. It’s rare that return men have a long period of success so when you take into consideration that Hester has regressed the last two seasons, I don’t see him going back to what he was.

by BearFan611 on Dec 22, 2009 6:39 PM CST reply actions

Keep him at WR

I’m fine with him being the slot WR the majority of the time next season if JA can land a great possession guy. Have Hester, Knox, and Bennett rotate in/out for the other two WR positions.

Trade him

We don’t need him that badly now.Seems we can put anyone at the returner spot and they will get at least 1 or 2 TDs

I did like the look of the big rookie in the preseason… Melton, was it? Or Lance Louis?

Don't need him?

The Bears have one of the worst offenses in the league- if you take a dynamic playmaker out of the mix, teams can concentrate on Olsen and Knox exclusively.

well

they already concentrate on Olsen exclusively and when they don’t he finds ways to not catch a ball

by frenchbears113 on Dec 23, 2009 11:08 AM CST up reply actions

Yep, he's not tough at all.

If they can sign a difference-maker WR, then I’d be OK with trading Hester for a 2nd or 3rd rounder.

I just wonder if a team would be willing

to pick up Hester’s contract. He’s owed a $5 million roster bonus next year alone.

That's a good point

I didn’t realize he had a roster bonus that large next season. Maybe a team with deep pockets would take a chance with him, considering next year may be uncapped.
