Poll: Who would make the biggest impact for the Bears in 2010?

Wcg_thumb_poll_medium
It can probably be reasonably assumed that out of the three biggest need the Chicago Bears have (OL, WR, DBs), we probably won't see all three shored up before 2010.  So, who do you think would make the biggest impact on the 2010 season out of the three choices?

- A Pro Bowl Offensive Lineman

- A True #1 Wide Receiver

- A Game Changing Defensive Back

Let us know how you voted and why...

I voted for another position.

I meant players...

but I reckon I didn’t specify.

I did kind of the same thing

but my vote is for a new President of the Bears to completely clean house. There’s a good article about the Blackhawks transformation in just two years time in the Tribune today. It started with Rocky Wirtz hiring John McDonough and then McDonough completely re-vamping the the front office and coaching staff. Bears need the same.

I guess I can clarify

One offensive lineman isn’t going to accomplish that much. I mean, technically we acquired a pro-bowl offensive lineman, just way past his prime. Anyone currently performing at a pro-bowl level is unlikely to leave their team.

A #1 Wideout would be nice, but getting them and not upgrading the line won’t do any good.

A game changing defensive back would be nice, too, except you’re looking at a front four that doesn’t do anything, and a linebacking corp that could still be a question mark in 2010.

OL

I would love a true #1 receiver but if I had to choose I would say OL. Our young WR will have this year under their belt so they should be better next year. Get a Pro Bowl OL (make sure he’s still a Pro Bowler and not washed up!) and every position on offense gets better.

I chose WR

because that’s where the biggest impact will be made. If you get a Pro Bowl OL, you still need to upgrade 3 more positions on the OL because the entire line is terrible. At least if the Bears get B. Marshall, they instantly upgrade the WR corp because Marshall would be #1 and you have a combo of Bennett/Knox as your #2 and Hester as your #3 because that’s where Hester belongs!! Hester in the slot would be devestating to defenses.

But they need to clean house with the coaching staff first. It doesn’t matter what they do if the same coaching staff is back.

Ditto

A big WR that fights for balls and gets good YAC would bail Jay out a lot. Denver to Chicago is a serious downgrade at WR. And yes, we need more than one guy on O Line to make an appreciable difference.

YES YES YES YES!!!

Since there was no choice for HC/OC, I went with a #1 WR. Here is my rationale: A solid WR, who has it all (good hands, speed, size, and can make big plays) helps swing the momentum of game when it is going bad. Also, if the bears spent picks and a QB to get Cutler, it makes sense to give him atleast one solid target he can always go to in the clutch. I understand protecting the QB and giving him time to throw is vital, but I think a big play making wideout overcomes that deficient aspect (o-line) if he has speed, strength and size to blow past his defender. A game breaking WR is critical for this team. The speedsters we have right now in hester and knox are 2nd and 3rd options. Without a true #1, who is big and fast and can make clutch plays, getting the other positions filled first is just pro-longing the chances of getting deep into the playoffs.

It almost doesn't matter...

because only one player will not turn the tide for this offense or defense; no matter how many Urlacher fans scream about it. I agree that losing the current coaches will do more good than additional players anyway. This team needs to upgrade at DT, DE, SLB, FS, CB on defense and OT, OT, OG, C, #1WR on offense. With about 5 picks in the draft, that leaves a few holes to fill now, don’t it? FIRE LOVIE NOW!

Based on players only. . .

I would have to go with a game changing, opposing, double coverage drawing, deep threat (and a partridge in a pear tree) #1 WR.

Based on a one man spot – I have to believe that would make the most impact.

(If I had free reign in voting, I would go with GM – bye bye JA)

by TheMan1 on Dec 4, 2009 1:19 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

this poll

Would be easier if the Bears weren’t in such dire straits in all phases of the game, from coaching down to the least valuable player, but keeping in the spirit of the poll I picked offensive lineman, because you have to start somewhere and Cutler needs some protection fast.

"I am not an animal!" - Merrick

by Maelvampyre on Dec 4, 2009 1:22 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

agreed

went with OL mainly because it would improve protection for Cutler and hopefully, would improve Forte’s production. obviously a No. 1 WR would be great, but this team needs to rebuild in the worst way and it has to start on the OL as the band-aid jobs of Pace, Omiyale and Shaffer haven’t done anything.

Evil will always triumph, because good is dumb.

Offensive Line

Some Pro Football pundants out there are calling the Bears Offensive line the worst in the NFL. I kind of agree with them.

my wife, who hates football, asked me if the o-line hates Cutler. If she can see it, then the idiot coaches sure can. The pundits just put it in words.

Somebody that is not into football as much as we are making that observation. The sad reality of it all is that it is a pathetic product we put on the field every Sunday. I think there needs to be accountability for that. I mean seriously, if you were Angelo’s or Lovie’s boss would you be happy?

Well

I think that may apply more to the Packers line at least in pass protection though your run blocking is not good at all which is too bad because I think Forte could be good if there was a hole to run through.

A true #1 wide receiver is something this team has never really had.

A team can “get by” with out a probowl O linemen. But a true #1 receiver can make a powerful impact on any team.

If you can't laugh at yourself you must not be very funny.

by Just Dave on Dec 4, 2009 2:30 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I voted O-line

If the O-line doesn’t give the QB any time, that #1 WR isn’t ever going to get the ball in the first place.

And if you get a high end DB, The opposing team can always work the other half of the field.

When you go to somebody's house, you don't crap on their floor. Being a fan of one team does NOT give you license to be a dick to fans of another.

Corollary: When people are visiting your house and behaving themselves, them being a fan of a different team is NOT a reason for you to piss in their beer.

by definition, a game changing DB is inherently more valuabe then the other options

as you could have a true #1 WR or a pro bowl OL that do not change the game. Poor wording skews these poll results. Makes more sense if u just say we can get a pro bowler at any one of these 3 positions, which one is more important.

by No It All on Dec 4, 2009 2:53 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Except I didn't ask which was more important...

I asked which would make a bigger impact for our 2010 season. A Pro Bowl OLineman and a #1 WR could also be game changers… so no need to nitpick.

You are all gentlemen (and ladies) and good judges of cheap whiskey.

by Dane Noble on Dec 4, 2009 3:28 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

that is pretty funny.

My point was valid. You yourself however nitpick trying to differentiate between “more important” and “bigger impact for our 2010 season”. Dunno why though, I’m right either way. While a Pro Bowl OLineman and a #1 WR could also be game changers, a game changer IS.

Orlando Pace – Pro Bowl OLineman
Just about any WR in the NFL – #1 WR
Polamalu, Ed Reed, D. Revis – Game Changing DBs

by Dane Noble on Dec 4, 2009 4:33 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

i say

the oline needs to be fixed more than the receiver spot. now i am in no way saying our wr corps doesn’t need an upgrade, on the contrary i think it does. but fixing the oline would solve the running game deficiency, which in turn would make the team far from one dimensional and in turn protect cutler and give him time to throw. fixing the oline solves 2 major problems: opening lanes for the running game and opening things up for the passing game. the bears have the money to both fix the oline and get a true #1 receiver….. they just lack the intelligence to fix those positions with good players.

by frenchbears113 on Dec 4, 2009 3:35 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

yes
exactly what i voted for... alot of the defense could improve just by a better down 4. A stud tackle (what everyone says tommie harris is supposed to be) or end who opens up the other guys would be my pick.

Unfortunately the o-line needs more help than one new guy… they’re not good at all.
