Bears Get Much Needed Win Over Rams, Win 17-9

If the Bears are to keep any hope about a playoff berth, they had to start with a win in this game.  While it did look easy at times, the Bears still managed to play some ugly ball in this game and make it come down to the last play of the game.

The Bears bucked a recent trend of not socring early in game, by taking advantage of the Rams stacking 9 in the box... to what purpose I don't know.  The Bears run game couldn't have scared them.  The Bears struck early with a 43 yarder to Hester and then a deep pass to Knox which ended in a pass inference call.

Throughout the game the Bears run game still was largely ineffective, though there was a few signs of life in it.

The Bears have a game against the Green Bay Packers on the horizon.  Every game from here on out is a must win, but luckily this one is at home where the Bears play much better.  The best the Bears can do now if they win out is 9-7, which is a long shot, but they have taken the first step.

Star-divide

Stats:

Jay Cutler: 143 yards, 1 TD

Matt Forte: 91 yards, 1 TD

Earl Bennett: 2 receptions, 74 yards

Jamar Williams: 18 tackles

FYI,

even if the Bears win out their playoff prospects are dim. Only 12% of the simulations at NFL-forecast.com end up with a 9-7 Bears team in the playoffs. Not good.

by shawndgoldman on Dec 6, 2009 3:09 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

To be clear...

that 12% assumes the Bears finish 9-7. So even if they win out there’s about a 1-in-10 chance that they’ll be in the playoffs.

Big congrats to Earl Bennett

If you’re going to score your first touchdown…it might as well be on a win and not during garbage time.

9-7 Bears

And if they do win out…Lovie and JA keep their jobs, and is that really a good thing?

they might keep them even if they lose out

They very well might

keep them. But I got to believe that the McCaskey’s are not that cold-hearted and would thumb the noses of Bears fans everywhere by keeping a coach who hasn’t taken the team to the playoffs for the third straight year…a year where they might go 5-11.

chris williams looked very good at times

terrible play calling on offense again, and the inside of our o-line is just awful – kreutz and omiyale didn’t generate much of a push.

totally

Cdub did pretty well for not playing there all season. He really showed, albeit against the rams (so plz dont make me eat my words Cdub next week), that he should have been there from week one. shaffer look serviceable-ish.. Kruetz really is done, and its really depressing cause i like him so much. Someone at halas hall needs to get the shit kicked out of him for letting omiyale play gaurd. its disgusting. can’t block anyone. the one block they highlighted of him during the game was him pulling and just tripping the defender up by cutting out his legs. thats all he can do, dive at the legs, i could get 15 mil and do the same. but i guess that 15 mil is why he is in there.. I don’t even see garza which, sadly, is a good thing on this oline.

by GtM on Dec 6, 2009 4:01 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

kreutz is done

incredible career – but he just can’t beat anyone anymore. beekman will be an improvement over him next year. williams should stay at LT the rest of the year. put beekman at G, and figure out if shaffer or omiyale are legit options at RT. omiyale is bigger and has the bigger contract, so hopefully he pans out – but please stop putting him in at G, its not his freaking position! work pace in where you can, but fact is, he’s finished as well – though he did have good moments in pass protection this year.

I didn't get a chance to see the game

So, Cdub started at LT and played their all game? That’s awesome.

by Chitownproduct on Dec 7, 2009 2:29 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

+1...

Kreutz is done and Omiyale might actually make a good RT; though Shaffer wasn’t as terrible as I would have thought. Beekman needs more reps at C or G but Kreutz need to “relax” a few games. Why not get Louis some reps and see what he’s got. I say:

LT-Williams
LG-Louis
C-Beekman
RG-Garza
RT-Omiyale

At least then we know which positions to draft/find in FA. My guess is G and T, but maybe Omiyale can surprise us all and earn his big cash.

yeah, hopefully

he did look like a really good LT for good chunks of the afternoon. if he gets to stay at LT the rest of the season, hopefully he’ll become more consistent. it would be huge if we have our LT situation settled by the end of the season.

Williams did good against the sorry Rams, which means nothing. Show fans what you can do against teams that execute better like GB or Vikings.

When sport analyst breakdown a team film and show fans all the good things a player or units do good against an inferior team is meaningless. Players and teams are special when they preform well against elite squads or opposing players.

He never really had a chance to throw the ball,

as it seems like the coaches really took Urlacher’s words to heart. We ran, ran and then ran some more despite the fact that we don’t run well. Looked like Lovie was intent on limiting any and all errors, so they kept the ball out of Cutler’s hands.

It wasn't horrible.

Not bad, not great, just… The O-Line played. But on a couple plays, especially early, Cutler got drilled. But he unloaded a beautiful ball that Hester jumped up and reeled in, and right after he threw got planted on his right arm.

I have to disagree with the title of your post...

while I respect the fact that you’re trying to be somewhat unbiased, the reality is for the Bears to improve, this was more of a “much needed loss”. A loss to a team as bad as the Rams might have been the trigger to dump the entire front office staff of the Bears. The fact that they won just prolongs the agony and the probability that we’re going to be stuck with these morons for at least another season.

If they played any playoff caliber team today, we would have had another Bengals/Vikings debacle on our hands. To let the Rams hold onto a chance to tie the game with just over a minute left, especially with as poorly as Kyle Boller played, should count as a loss anyway.

by BearFan611 on Dec 6, 2009 4:32 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

damage was done today as well, though

lovie almost certainly won’t be fired (since we’re cheap), but almost everyone else seems likely to be gone for the way the past 8 weeks or so have gone. today, yet again, our offensive game plan seemed really bad. so many odd play calls. turner didn’t help himself at all. honestly, unless we win out AND our coaches completely out-coach the opposition every week (which ’ain’t happening…see today), there will be some major turnover in the staff.

Totally agree with you brother

Though I hope a less than stellar win against a 1-10 team wakes somebody up in the McCaskey family (I can dream). Gaines Adams not playing today (a 2nd rounder that we could’ve used to fix the o-line) should be enough to give the Bears Org. a look at other GMs (I hope Hub Arkush’s sources are correct)…I am tired of the arrogance of Jerry Angelo; Chris Harris and Thomas Jones should still be Bears.

by MetalGearPeaceWalker on Dec 6, 2009 4:51 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Angelo is a horrendous GM

And he’s just basically hanging on at this point to try and keep his job. The only gutsy move he’s made since he’s been in Chicago is the Cutler signing. The trade for Gaines Adams is starting to look like a wasted 2nd round pick. After giving up our first-rounders 2 years in a row, the gambel on Adams wasn’t really something that we could afford to do. Has he even gotten any sacks so far?

Chris Williams is starting to look like a good draft pick

but other than that and the other Williams, we pretty much sucked in this one. Cutler completed less than half his passes, no one had more than 3 receptions, Forte sucked balls, and we only scored 17.

by GouldisGold on Dec 6, 2009 4:39 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't say Forte sucked balls

24 for 91 and a touchdown is acceptable in my opinion.

That’s about 3.9 per carry. Actually much better than in any game besides the lions one this season.

This is ridiculous (in a bad way) When the hell will we ever learn how to do a somewhat balanced offense.Listen it’s either 60/40,50/50,or 45/55 ,but never 70/30 or what have you, half of are problem is the play calling bc I saw that Cutler had time to throw the football. Then when he did throw they didn’t let him go any where, hell if we see more of that I think we can have Boller as are QB bc that’s what they limited Cutler to in the second half.
We are playing scared shitless bc Cutler threw too many picks,we have to find a balance by the end of the season in play calling on Offense.I want variety damnit when u throw, throw the ball 30 yards down field not 5 yards and then run 6 times in a row, then throw for 5 more yards shit not to tute my own horn but i think i can do that

Quick question

Was the field goal shovel pass something that should have had a penalty? He was holding olsen’s jersey. I know he was behind the line of scrimmage. Is that pass interference?

by FAQ on Dec 6, 2009 5:40 PM CST via mobile reply actions   0 recs

No, just a

good defensive call/awful play call. If the coaches know they’re going to go or it on fourth down, they should have just ran the ball all four downs, or at least gone for it the conventional way, as Olsen is not the guy you want for that type of play. He doesn’t have that burst that we all thought he had after his combine 40.

My thought exactly

Go for it, and be creative enough to something different than running the ball up the middle on 1st/2nd downs. With all the running plays, there were virtually no play-action calls yesterday. In addition, Turner called that stupid Hester misdirection that has never worked, and he got hurt on it!

this game only confirmed for me

It’s not Cutler’s fault.

He made some impressive completions (some were dropped) while running, staring down blitzes (including literally being hit as he was thrown) and any thoughts about his confidence being gone were proven wrong when he launched that TD pass to Bennet and snapped his fingers in the air in celebration (made me feel good anyway). Sure, it was the Rams, but the lack of o-line support he got and ineffective play calling only proved he was playing well DESIPTE his surroundings. Imagine if the team and coaches he had could respond to GOOD teams the way his teamates respond to BAD teams. I’m not saying others didn’t perform well, but he looked confident, threw mostly well and reminded us why we were all so excited about him coming here in the first place.

The Bears are not the worst team in the NFL and we proved that today with the narrow win over the 1-11 Rams. Cutler threw for 150 yards and zero picks against the 22nd rated pass defense. Let’s hope we can end the season on a positive note and win a couple more games.

JA and Smith both stated at the end of 2008, that we were close. They didn’t realize it was to the bottom of the barrel. Nothing was fixed in the offseason and now management has backed the franchise into a corner. Without high draft picks and a probable uncapped 2010, it’s going to be very tough to turn it around. Major changes in management and coaching, if made by ownership, would be a great place to start.

Yeah the Pack are certainly the better team and they are playing at home on a nice long rest but…you never know. It’s not a game they HAVE to win, it’s just one that they should win. Ravens have more on the line but I still don’t see them winning barring a big special teams discrepancy.

A victory is a victory...

but this was another lukewarm effort at best. OMIYALE IS NOT A GUARD! He, again, was terrible. Cutler looked comfortable and threw the ball well. K Bell is the starter of the future and Forte will become the Chester Taylor of this team. Tommie Harris is DONE! most of the big plays the Rams had were while he was in there. When the Bears went to A Adams and Harrison in the middle, the run D looked better. Olsen again didn’t show up. Hester needs to be traded for other needs as Knox can fill his role. D Manning just sucks. Shaffer was not as bad as I expected; still think of him as a career backup though. Liked to see Alfalfa and Payne as a team. They work well together. Tillman is the man; he makes some mistakes, but NO ONE plays hurt better than Peanut. Didn’t seem to miss Briggs as much as I would have thought. Maybe this team does have some serious depth at LB. I think Williams can handle LT. Kreutz is done.

However, this was the RAMS! They played a 2nd (I hold my laughter) string QB who hasn’t won in 3 years. The best Rams player was about 80% healthy. The Bears didn’t run them out of town on a rail, they just held on to win. The fake FG is the final nail in the coffin for Lovie’s horrible game skills. Nice effort by Olsen on that one. I thought he was either fast or tough. On that play he was neither. For as badly as the Rams played, they could have tied it. Another lackluster win for Lovie that will prolong his stay in Chicago. I have never felt so empty after a Bears victory.

Well D Manning doesn't look good

Cause the idiot coach lovie moves him all over the place so he cant develop on one position. If he actually stayed in one position and develop in that position he might actually be decent.

i wonder if some of the changes were specifically to stop jackson

it’ll be interesting to see if they keep the safeties as-is next week. manning has better physical skills, obviously, but afalava seems to have better instincts and a higher football IQ.

by guy incognito on Dec 7, 2009 1:08 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I believe that Afalava is a better SS than FS

Manning would have been decent on FS if he wasnt moved around so much over the years

by T.Moore on Dec 7, 2009 6:56 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

D Manning...

just does not get the FS position at all. He does not attack the LOS well. He does not hit or tackle well. He does not cover well. All he can do is blitz off the edge and run fast; usually to catch up to the receiver he was beaten by. I do not think his problems could be fixed by better coaching. If you notice, Graham gets moved around a bit and he can still cover much better and he can tackle as well. Manning is a luxury type player, like Josh Cribbs. If the Bears had no other return guys and kept him as a limited ST guy and occasional 3rd or 4th DB, then maybe an argument would be made to keep him. If he doesn’t resign with the Bears next year (I believe he’s a FA), he will get on with another team who needs a KR, but his career as a FS is done.

I was at the game

AA and Payne switched back and forth between playing deep and up at the LOS. The positions are really interchangeable. AA looked tenative coming up to tackle, while Payne played very well as the eighth defender in the box.

This game sucked.

It did on so many levels

The Rams … as bad as they are, were allowed to be competitive in this game because the Bears are frickin terrible. 3rd and 8 – Ron Turner, genius that he is – calls for the old bubble screen. We’re more predictable than the forecast in San Diego.

Bears suck.

Evil will always triumph, because good is dumb.

btw, weiss considering OC position?

this article suggests weiss would be open to joining the bears staff next year if turner is fired. seems like he’s got a lot of incentives to be here. hopefully we get him or somebody with his abilities. turner had another stinker of a game today.

by guy incognito on Dec 6, 2009 11:47 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

New OC

Weiss would be interesting…though his ND teams were dudes…his offensive players loved him (Golden Tate wanted him back the next year) and they have played pretty solid offensive football…but the Patriots seem like more of a fit for him

by MetalGearPeaceWalker on Dec 7, 2009 12:04 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

i see no chance of him returning to NE

that would be like crawling back home after getting beat up. no way his ego lets him do that. not sure he’d come here, but this is a pretty perfect situation. between it being the midwest (chance to stick it to ND, plus convenient for his family), a possible HC job in the near future (given lovie’s uncertain future), interesting talent (cutler, forte, olson, hester), plus a chance to turn around a history of ineptitude and prove your genius, there’s a lot being the bears’ OC next year offers him.

by guy incognito on Dec 7, 2009 1:03 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

HC job? Him?

he should stay the OC not HC again

by T.Moore on Dec 7, 2009 6:57 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

It's a win

Not much to say other than that.

Chris Williams did a servicable job at LT for a first time there this season. He got beat badly by Chris Long on a sack but otherwise not bad. Wish they’d move Omiyale to RT where he belongs, so we can see if he belongs.

We ran a whole heck of a lot. Small chips at first, generally increasing as the game wore on and the Rams defense wore down. Can’t believe we lost the time of possession battle as often as we were running. Still need a lot of improvement there.

After the botched fake FG the offense went extremely conservative. We were making some yardage down field until Lovie decided a 10 point cushion was big enough to run out the game. DA got into the game after the offense stopped throwing so even though he was active he again had little opportunity to show anything. Low completion % for Cutler but also a few PI non-calls. That long PI call on the Knox throw looked under thrown to me, if the DB had turned it might’ve been an easy pick, same on the fade in the endzone (forgot who that was to).

And 4 friggin fumbles? I know we only lost one but dang.

Oh and Jamar Williams looked good. He was all over.

Oh oh

and where were special teams yesterday? Bad showing on all phases. Gave up some big returns, had their only big return negated by a penalty, bobbled catches, bad calls on fair catches deep in our territory, and looked like they nearly got Gould injured when he had to try and make a play on a kick return. Not their best day.

Wish they’d move Omiyale to RT where he belongs, so we can see if he belongs.

If memory serves, there are about 14,000,000 reasons why they’ll continue to think he returns.

win

a win is a win but really we should have won BIG if you think about it.i am a bit dissapointed that Forte didnt get 3 figures rushing, but glad he did run for a credible amount.i really would like a BIG win against green bay, i have asked santa for that one and i have been good so hopefully i get my wish. we also want a bad day for favre at soldier field and maybe if i am especially good i could get that request answered. GO BEARS

Hope for the Playoffs?

The Bears are not going to the playoffs, we struggled against a 1-10 team. We are that bad.

Da Bears

The Good: Jamar Williams, Rams CB Bartell, Earl Bennett-nice little route he ran for that TD

The Bad: Offensive Line, Tommie Harris, Fake FG

The Ugly: Play calling, Frank Omiyale, Penalties, a close game against the worst team in the league

This entire offensive unit is plain bad!! The Rams are one of the worst defensive teams in the league and the Bears struggle!!

First time in my life I’ve actually said this but I can’t wait for this season to be over!!!

My observations from the game

Jamar Williams- played like an uncaged animal

Cutler- decent, with some nice throws, but missed a wide-open Olsen on Hester EZ play.

Roach- guy just makes plays

C. Williams- played solid except sack by Long

Omiyale- still is showing why the Bears don’t have their LG of the future

Hester- great catch, still tenative and has “happy feet” on punt returns

G. Adams- where art thou?

AA and Payne- the latter tackled well in the box, while AA was tenative in the run game, but decent in coverage.

Wale- showed up again against inferior competition

Turner- horrible, predictable and conservative game-plan; still running Forte up the middle against a wall of defenders.

Kreutz- is old and feeble

Horrible Game

I can’t believe I actually agree with Rick Telander for once. Except for watching Williams and Williams this was really not worth watching at all. I was more entertained when FOX cut to 90 seconds of Saints/Redskins (so pissed that they cut to Cowboys/Giants).

This game was nothing more than an effort to mask this team’s deficiencies. They made so many rush attempts that they could call the Bears a running team again. They threw so few times that Cutler wasn’t going to throw an INT. They put up sacks against the Rams’ bench warmers and backup QB (a guy who put up a lower passer rating that our punter).

I don’t ever want to see a 70/30 run/pass ratio unless the Bears are leading by 20+ points at the half. I also don’t want to see a fake field goal, especially to Olsen. Leave that to the Rams. I hate that. Every time the Bears play an opponent they feel is beneath them, they try to get creative – not creative with real plays, just stupid football tricks that never work (what’s Hester’s YPC now -4.5?). If the Bears had that kind of showing against any other opponent or if Bulger wasn’t injured, we would be 4-8.
