Thoughts From Biggs After Sunday's Victory
We've gotten our own opinions out in the open after the win yesterday, but it's always good to be able to hear from one of the best writers covering the Bears: Brad Biggs.
Biggs always provides a fresh perspective, and doesn't get caught up in all the hoopla that the media can sometimes generate.
Here's an excerpt from his column today:
7. Anyone else wondering aloud about defensive end Gaines Adams being inactive? Instead, the Bears had two backup interior offensive linemen dress--Josh Beekman and rookie Lance Louis. Why dress Louis ahead of Adams when Louis wasn't going to play? Could it have been the coaching staff sending a message to the front office about the trade? Probably not, but it's at least worth mulling over. Adams has barely played. The coaches remain high on him but it's pretty evident there just isn't going to be a spot for him out there this season unless some type of injury occurs.

I don't wonder why he was inactive...
I wonder why we had to give up a 2nd friggin round pick for a guy we won’t even play.
Good job Jerry… you just traded for your one-way ticket out of here

When teams make these mid-year trades,
we know that sometimes it takes a year to see the results. But, when a team who has the issues with the OL like the Bears have trades their top pick in the next year’s draft for someone who can’t make an immediate impact, that’s trouble.
You are all gentlemen (and ladies) and good judges of cheap whiskey.
Not to mention, that someone doesn’t even play on the OL – which, poor though our DL has been, is more of a need right now.

Not to mention trading for a DL who looks like a WR and doesn't seem to have any strength at all.
Teams don’t give up “4th overall” picks, who don’t get drunk on boats every other week, unless they can’t play.
Gaines and Anderson
would be some nice starters for OLB in a 3-4

I think
they might be too, wonder how Gilbert would be in the OLB, not sure he is big enough to play on the line in a 3-4.
He's optimal size for that position
The only question would be is he strong enough to hold up at the POA.

Hypothetically?
If the Bears committed to something like that now, do you think that is something that could be taken care of with a strength and conditioning coach in just one off-season?
Possibly
but not very likely. The Packers have done it, but have one of the best 3-4 defensive minds in the business and had all their draft picks.

Absolutely,
we should have been using that pick on the O-line, trade or draft, as that is the more immediate need. To use it on the D-line, though it be the lesser need, shouldn’t it have been on for a potential stud tackle. Seems silly to use it on a end when we have Gilbert and Melton whom still haven’t seen any time on field.
i wonder why wale is getting snaps over him right now
unless he’s playing against utter trash tackles, wale has done absolutely nothing this year. adams might do nothing as well, but we might as well give him reps. i think the real potential growth happens next year, after he has an offseason to really pick up some weight and work with marinelli. he’s clearly got crazy talent, more than anyone on our line (or anyone you get with a 2nd round pick), but the question is whether anyone can get him to tap into that potential. i’d say both adams and gilbert should be getting wale’s reps.
It's because
they won’t help Lovie and JA win games right now. They’re trying to save their jobs face.

you really think wale is helping?
honestly, he’s been invisible except when he played against the scrubbiest of o-linemen. he does nothing against anyone even moderately good. i really don’t think adams or gilbert could do worse.

Wale
He had two sacks on Sunday, so it would’ve been tough for them to match that. Maybe they’re doing him a favor cause he’ll get a bigger contract with better numbers.

Cont'd
It makes me think that he’s still in their plans for the future. I’d like to think that if he weren’t, we’d be trying out some of the younger guys right now.

Not sure about that
Ok, then the Bears would have to let Anderson walk most likely (pending a new CBA contract). Then that would leave them with Wale, Brown, Adams, and Melton. What would they have to pay him, and for how long? It’s obvious to me that he plays well against inferior teams, and is nearly invisible against good/great competition. I think he walks for greener pastures, and the Bears roll with Anderson, Melton, and a possible FA like Kampman?

As I said,
I’d like to think that…
I figured this was going to be an evaluation year for both Ogun and Anderson. To see if Rod could turn them into elite rush men. But I hope Wale does walk – the guys not that good for a defense that demands pressure from the front four. He seemingly does marginally better in his contract year, for what that’s worth.
Don’t forget about Izzy – we resigned him in the off-season and he did lose a bunch of weight to move outside. Even though, they’ve been playing him out of position since he lost the weight.
We currently have the possibility of seven DE’s that could be on our roster next season. Ogun, Brown, Anderson, G. Adams, Idonije(?), Melton(?),Gilbert(?).
I just wish we could see what we have in Gilbert and Adams right now in these garbage games.
Maybe our line will shape up like this next season.
Adams / Gilbert / Harrison / Brown
Melton / Izzy / Adams / Anderson
Izzy would need to hang out with Harrison and gain some weight back. Let Wale walk and then trade Harris to get a decent offensive lineman in the draft.

That's a possibility
JA may want to spend O-gun’s money elsewhere, like an O-linemen or WR. I’m not sure if Izzy belongs on the inside or outside; he’s looked good at DT this season, even if he’s playing undersized right now.

Yeah,
Izzy hasn’t looked bad. It just sucks that they don’t use him on the outside after asking him to lose the weight to play there.

Yep
Unfortunately, that’s the way the Bears brass operates. Let’s move this guy here, and then change our minds halfway through the season. They’ve been so horrible at developing players at their natural positions that it’s effecting their production.

Which is...
the irony when people talking about switching our defense to a 3-4. Who better than Lovie to do so? I know he doesn’t run this scheme, but he’s “good” at shuffling guys around, amirght?

Hmm...
that would be like asking a bleeding-heart liberal to convert to an ultra-conservative republican.

I think there's something to this
Why wouldn’t the coaching staff want Adams to go against an inferior foe like the Rams? That way, he has the best chance of succeeding, thus giving him the confidence to work harder.

maybe...but realize the rational logic you just spelled out
makes no sense for our coaching staff. why would they want to put a player in a position to succeed?

This trade is looking bad week by week
Maranelli and Rusty Jones have their work cut out for them next year with Gaines Adams.
